Re: [QUAD-L] about docs giving new drugs

As a quad who can get no exercise, I know what you mean about trying to get
your diet right. The only thing you can do is try to find out what diet
works best and stick to it as well as you can.

I have lost some weight over the last few weeks, but it's all coming off of
my legs. Now I have to be concerned that I will lose weight off my butt --
and that's not good.

I disagree about seeing the doctor when you're healthy. I think it's
important to get a checkup every year, but remember you are in charge of
your health and if a doctor gives you a prescription or tries to give you a
prescription you don't think is necessary, you have the right to refuse it.
I don't take medicine which I don't deem necessary. Listen to the doctor,
do research, and then use your best judgment. It's always better to be
armed with information, than to simply make decisions blind.

That's my opinion, but then again many others on this list have been living
with this condition longer than I have and are doing just fine.
You know what they say about opinions!

  Hello,
I'm experiencing the same as you. First off I need to mention high
cholesterol runs high in my family but it finally caught up to me. I'm
taking Welchol to lower my cholesterol but after my last Dr. appointment my
triglyceride (blood fat) is sky high. He told me the same thing. Excercise
and get on a lowfat diet. I feel helpless about the exercise but feel guilty
if I have a cookie or small scoop of ice-cream.
I was on Lipitor but had to go off it because my body hurt EXTREMELY (side
effect, muscle or and joint pain) I felt like I was having a bad U.T.I. So
he switched me to Welchol but it has no effect on triglyceride. So on my
next check-up , he'll probably give me something for this.
I'm about 25 pounds overweight but other than seeing a dietitian, I don't
have a clue about the exercise.
I didn't help much but I'm wondering if your doctor gave you cholesterol
 pills?

Hi,

I am very skeptic about meds. Thank God, Dr. didn't prescribe me any meds as
well. I am having apples, grapes, bananas, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes,
onions, garlic, ginger, celery and cholesterol free oil. Ooo.. in the
morning I'm taking Quaker Oats with skimmed milk. Rejecting red meat and
taking only chicken and fish.

Check out the next forwarded mail. Its so true

Please take care and keep in touch :-)

Re: [QUAD-L] about docs giving new drugs

2009-04-03 Thread Shahidul
Hello friends,

I did have a check up recently, where I found my BP very low, 80/60. I
understand, for quads it is possibly natural. But I have another thing to
get alarmed.

Recently one quad (Cerebral palsy) died in my neighbourhood who was quite
younger then me. Then I heard the news about Emmett, whom I know because of
this list. He used to be regular participant around 2000 and a nice man too.
All these events increased my anxiety. A kind of fear of death is bothering
me at present.

Sometimes I feel, if death comes it will be better, as still I am not that
old. But things will get worse as I get older. Its better to go early. I
know if any quad doesn't have any interest in living, he can give up and die
gradually.

Anyway, I am having high risk LDL cholesterol (160) in the check up. I
don't know what to do.

Doctors say, need to exercise and change food habit. As a quad I don't have
much movement. I wonder, how other quads control their cholesterol ? I will
love to hear from any of you.

Please take care :-)

Also many docs dont even understand diddly about a quad..they

Re: [QUAD-L] about docs giving new drugs

2009-04-02 Thread John S.
A quads BP should not be treated to increase it. By doing this, you may be
eliminating your option to give him medicine that will bring down his BP during
instances when Autonomic dysreflexia hits.
Try checking his bp after or while he is being active. His low bp is a simple
result of a lack of muscle tension. If his heart isn't malfunctioning, then why
medicate it.
I completely agree with Ron.
Doctors do not get a lot of information on quads and what they have is often
scewed by each doctors history. If a quads heart is functioning normally, he
has low blood pressure. The group of glands that produce the hormones that
would correct the blood pressure do not function properly. (if at all).
After a while, a quad can be taking more pills than food.

I wish you the best,
john
