Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved an additional six
state Medicaid waiver requests under Section 1135 of the Social Security
Act (Act), bringing the total number of approved Section 1135 waivers for
states to twenty nine. The waivers were approved within days of states’
submitting them, with average approval time taking less than seven calendar
days. The waivers offer states new flexibilities to focus their resources
on combatting the outbreak and providing the best possible care to their
Medicaid beneficiaries. These waivers support President Trump’s commitment
to operating a COVID-19 response that is locally executed, state managed
and federally supported. All Section 1135 approval letters will be posted
here

as
they are issued.

CMS approved waivers for the following states today:

   - New York
   - Colorado
   - Hawaii
   - Idaho
   - Massachusetts
   - Maryland

CMS provides guidance to states on how to apply for Section 1135 waivers
through the Medicaid Disaster Response Tool Kit, which can be found here

To further the agency’s efforts, CMS has developed checklists and tools

to
expedite requests and approvals for waivers and other commonly requested
flexibilities.  CMS will continue to expeditiously review and approve, as
appropriate, all Section 1135 waivers and other requests that the agency
receives to ensure that we are providing our state partners with the
maximum flexibility they need to care for their Medicaid beneficiaries
during the public health emergency.

These waivers, and earlier CMS actions in response to COVID-19, are part of
the ongoing White House Task Force efforts. To keep up with the important

Eric,

I am growing much more concerned,. My granddaughter is in the hospital in Guam 
(son-in-law is military) They say she has pneumonia but haven’t tested her for 
COVID-19. Guam has 3 reported cases. They are waiting to get blood cultures 
back. They were to move back to the states the beginning of May and now the 
military is restricted from travel until May 11 for now. They will have to self 
quarantine when they get back. They were supposed to stay with me for 30 days 
and now who knows when I’ll get to see them.

 Sorry about what you're currently going through, Lori. I have been there and 
it's survivable, but I'm sure that I'm saying something you already know. I'm 
super fortunate to have had the same two attendants for something like eight 
years now. I'm also fortunate to have had a solid job for over 15 years. Hang 
in there. You wouldn't have gotten this far if you were the type that gave up 
easily. Then again, I'm pretty sure I have an idea what you've been through, so

Regarding the Coronavirus... I don't watch the news and I am so tired of 
hearing about it. Just use common sense and that's all you can do. Yes, it's 
serious while at the same time the stupidity of people could kill us just as 
quickly. I am so Hearing about it and talking about this as well but, regarding 
stupidity, there is absolutely no reason people should be hoarding toilet paper!
I am at my limit of being a quadriplegic after being hurt so many times by 
medical doctors and/or home health nurses. And now I am pretty much all on my 
own. My family was willing to put me in a nursing home that had been cited 
twice so I took matters into my own hands but the last 4 years have been beyond 
challenging since I got her to the point of needing surgery, been hospitalized 
twice when I had not been in the hospital since 1995 and anything else that 
could possibly go wrong almost on a daily basis.

I went to Google to look for it I was not successful any ideas will  be

Hi Dave,

I am an avid user of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. I'm using it now. Here are
the voice commands that I would use to copy a block of information from a
website and paste it into a document:

1. Go to the webpage you want and use the MouseGrid commands to place the
cursor at the beginning of the text you wish to copy.

2. Say mouse mark. It won't look like anything happened, but
NaturallySpeaking now knows its starting point.

3. Use the MouseGrid commands to place the cursor at the end of the text you
wish to copy.

4. Say mouse drag. This will highlight all the desired text.

5. Say copy that.

6. Switch to the document you wish to paste your copied text into and say
paste that.

There may be an easier way, but this works for me. Let me know if you have
any follow-up questions.

As for quality of life issues and supporting organizations, I concur with
Wheelchair on checking first with any local Center for Independent Living.
No need to reinvent the wheel if a really good wheel is available to you.

well it depends on what your operating system you're on and what is your 
favorite web browser? I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit edition, Firefox 
and Dragon version 10. If you are running under Firefox there are countless 
number of add-ins to grab any information that is being displayed in your web 
browser window! Now if you want to copy text just drag and highlight and 
right-click to copy and paste into some other application. Any other questions 
just ask

Don is right, you won't get much sympathy from us high quads, for myself I
would like to be able to feed myself and get a drink whenever I want to, and
most of all be able to scratch my nose when inches or get that damn off my
neck because I can actually feel that.  J

The very best advice that I can give you is the same advice that was given
to me at the Santa Clara rehab: don't let your disability control you, you
control your disability.

Ian,

You probably won't find much sympathy here from all of us who have much less 
physical movement than you have.  I'm a c5-6 complete and if I could walk 40 
or 50 steps, as you can I'd be doing it every waking minute of the day.  I'd 
be dancing a quad jig!

But, we're not in your situation, so can't really know the obstacles and 
difficulties you face.  So, I encourage you to do WHATEVER it takes to 
strengthen what you have!

-go to your local gym and see if there's a trainer willing to help.
-check out your nearest university... are they doing any medical/sci studies?
-any OT or PT schools near you?
-post an ad on craigslist for a workout partner/trainer.
-talk to your local newspaper/television station about doing a story about you.

  Subject: [QUAD-L] Hello, encouragment please


I always have good intentions of exercise / intense strengthening, 
whatever you might call it to reach my full potential. But intentions are 
easier than actually being consistent. Two of my obstacles are 1 - a full time 
job (not complaining) and 2 needing someones help for me to actually do / get 
to where I know I can get to. 

Neither are an excuse, just obstacles that I need to figure out.

I was injured at 15, now 33. Much time has passed but I know it's still 
not too late to be in all reality at least 10x better / physically able than I 
am now.

I'm c2 incomplete, right side strongest, use a power chair, with a left 
afo and walker and help standing I can walk between 40 and 50 steps at a time. 
But can't stand myself or transfer myself / but the potential is clearly there, 
much more potential that I can put into words, and too much potential to just 
let go.

There's a gym near my home that I know would benefit me greatly but I 
would need someone willing to invest their time and energy to help me and for 
me it's difficult to ask for that kind of help. A friend who'm I've only know a 
few weeks said he would help (I asked him) Still it's difficult for me to go 
forward with the gym. Things like him being married gand having kids and make 
taking time from his family make it difficult for me to really go through with 
it.

On the other end I have a single friend who I asked and he said yes but 
he was obviously not interested at all. 

Anyway. I know there's a way. But I don't know where to start - my legs 
work - my arms work - my abs and back work - but everything needs to and can be 
strengthened. But where do I start?

things it would be less overwhelming. But I know that if I can put it together,

In your example, working with a Physical Therapist in the beginning is  
great and then with a strength coach at the gym.  You have to establish a  
baseline and a goal.

So you have a c2 sci, legs, back, arms, abs, trunk muscles all work and you 
 don't exercise because nobody will tell you how or what to do? That's 
pretty amazing.  Did you finish school?  Do you have a  job?   What exactly 
do you do?   Your story is pretty  baffling to me.

Nice to meet you. I've been having trouble with pain. I may have taken some 
extra pain meds. I'm usually pretty harmless. I think I upset some folks now 
and then, but it's not on purpose. I just have trouble writing the way I think. 
I got a mind like a steel trap...old, dirty and banned in 49 states.
Seriously, I love the people on the list and pray for them all. New people are 
always fun for me. I had a brain injury and my memory sucks. I may get to meet 
you a few times. One of the perks that comes with a TBI. I've been a C-5 quad 
for 32 years and If I can be any help, then maybe your taking too many meds.

diamond business at least for next few months so I got to hurry. Man it's

I looked at map and Andover is just north of Anoka so
I'd say a drive from Andover to Newport would be about
45 minutes or so. Newport is close to Woodbury, Mn.

i'm not eating anything silas nor am i about to. i'm trying to present alternatives to living under the sea on the gulf coast. i haven't seen any ideas from your corner - are you a fatalist who believes some people are destined for a life of crap, who have no power over their own future, who MUST be the downtrodden of society, who's future has already been determined? phoenix has so far flown in 1000 refugees from new orleans and put them up at our sports arena. their addresses have been changed and they are being transported to and fromthe employment agencies to apply for available jobs. suitable housing is being located and finances worked out between lenders, landlords, and social services. if the other 48 would do the same, we can fix up quite a few folks withbetter lives.as long as new orleans has to rebuild so much now, why not build on the high side of town, above the se!

well, that's cute BUT - looking at the medical advances - even the industrial revolution jumping us from the middle ages to a very advanced society speaks differently. i AM curious at parts of the world that continue to live in the stone age though. they don't have to figure out HOW to better their status - all they need to do is get up and follow directions. if the starving people can't drill water wells - with help of course - and learn to grow crops and support themselves, what exactly is the problem? being tied to crappy parts of the earth that can't support life is a nice homey concept but if phoenix suddenly turned into a place that couldn't sustain life - i'd move. i'd camp out, i'd carry groceries., i'd pick fruit, i'd GROW fruit, i'd shovel manure - but i would do what it takes to survive.if i fould i had chosen a place that was dangerous or hit by lightning often, i'd move again. i'd preserv!

So are you now claiming the gov hasn't shown compassion?
They started efforts towards action by warning people all along the
coast there to evacuate 72hrs before, many didn't, and nobody new
exactly where it would hit so too many ignored the order. I showed
where the wheels towards relief for what might be the Nations most
widespread natural disaster immeadiatly.
I'm just awed by how many blame the gov for what is a natural
disaster's effects. The levie that broke flooding New Orleans was one
of the improved ones. It wasn't expected, but it produced a double
wammy.
The survivors there should have already been out of the city or at
least better prepared. Instead of playing the blame game, while we, as
Americans do what we can to help, we should all be looking at our
personal disaster plans. That includes water, food, extra batt, candles
etc, along with a series of emergency contacts. Start getting ready for
winter now, not after a blizzard.
At this point, all I can do is pray for them.
When they are ready for supplies I'll try to send some.

the other day talking about the Rodney King issue a while back in Los Angeles, 
where the police had beat him but he had no severe injuries and people looted

injuring inocent people...we are still paying for all that damage-- plus

I'm not sure those funds would've stopped the flooding or not but we'll never know now.
In do know they would do good now and "if" Bush was smart and wanted his country back behind him this would be a good time to tell Iraq "We got bigger problems at home so get your shit together we're leaving to take care of it!"

This is bad and herein Arkansas you can't get a room no where and hotel owners are thankfully forgiving peoples bills because they have no funds.
The Childrens hospital sent their chopper down there and a whole convoy of ambulances left to as well as any National Guardsmen.

My heart is so broken watching this devistation on TV. I don't think it's anybodys fault that every hurting person hasn't been reached yet with water, foods, etc. All that damn water in NO has got so many hands tied that it's tough to get relief in there. I'm sure the relief/emergency workers are doing there damnest to get to the hurting. My hat's off to all the civilians with flat bottom boats going in there and helping out to rescue people. It's wonderful to see the good in people at times like this.

The devastation worsens with each passing day because of the continual flooding, making it tougher and tougher to reach the hurting and stranded. Like Mike Brown said, the disaster didn't end on Monday after the hurricane passed through, it keeps getting worse. And to add insult to injury, the criminal element has raised it's ugly head. These gun toting thugs are hindering and even halting the rescue effort causing good people to die. This is massive devastation requiring massive relief effort to reach every single person.ONLY 4 days just isn't going tocut it.UNFORTUNATELY.

Amen Tim!  Anyone who thinks they know what is going on... is only fooling 
themselves.  Kinda like someone spending a day in a wheelchair and then 
proclaiming
to the world that they know exactly what it feels like to be a Quad.
Its going to get worse before it gets better.  Its crazy how people are 
acting, but who
knows how any one of us would act under the same circumstances.
In 3 months, we will have a much better understanding just what happened.

I saw them evacuate cities on the gulf coast in fear of Ivan a couple years 
ago. Both north and southbound sides of the expressway became northbound. For 
some reason, this time the police kept the southbound lanes closed to northbound 
traffic. The effect was an enormous parking lot. Within 12 hours of the electric 
generation stopping all cell phones died because they were only designed for a 
12 hour power failure. The police and fire lost their ability to communicate 
within 24 hours. The superdome was designated as a storm shelter yet it has no 
capacity to generate its own power. It has no clean water supply. It has no 
backup sewage system. The hospitals have no backup generators. the lack of 
preparation and common sense has been nothing short of criminal. For hotels to 
not have high wind resistant glass is an easy building code violation, but many 
of the tall buildings have no glass left in upper floors. 
New Orleans and the gulf coast have been "Grandfathered in"to death. 
In an area with such a large number of people to have so few working shelters or 
plans is nothing short of criminal misconduct at least, mass murder would be the 
charge I'd like to see leveled at government and former government officials. If 
they wouldn't do what it takes tomake the coast storm resistant after 
Andrew, then they should have bought the homes and created extended parking from 
the beach. Instead, they allowed slum lords to dictate where and what condition 
homes could be occupied.
As far as New Orleans being under sea level, river level, lake level, all I 
can say is, San Francisco sits on a major fault that will slip and frankly, I 
don't know what disaster preparation they have. Do they have any? The entire 
east coast seaboard is at risk of a tsunami that will happen and there will be 
just over 12 hours notice. That's 40 million people running for the hills at 
once. Planning hasn't even begun. This aren't possible disasters that might 
happen. It will happen. Just like a category 5 hurricane will hit the gulf coast 
again. Praying doesn't save lives, preparation does. Most of the people in the 
south don't know a bottle of Clorox will make 20 gallons of clean water. You can 
pump gasoline with a10 dollar attachment for a drill driver. 
Our government does not encourage readiness and will not reward it. A 
disaster in Washington DC is a bad dinner party. Why would we trustmorally 
bankrupt money junkies to lead us in a catastrophe. It is not looting unless you 
don't need it and can't use it. If the people steal cars and trucks to get out, 
then make sure the vehicle has a full load of people. People are dying while 
police worry about frivolous crimes that mean nothing to anyone but a lawyer.
