This might be possible as I had jacked up the car to give about 9 inches
clearance under the wheel

Is it possible that excessive movement of the suspension has pulled the
handbrake on?

I had not got as far as taking the wheel off so the brake pedal had not been
used. The reason for my investigation was that I had had to move the vehicle
from one side of the house to the other. I had expected to be able to push it
easily but had found it hard to push.

Was the brake pedal pressed to undo the wheel nuts ?
Maybe there is corrosion in the brake cylinder bore and it’s now stuck on.

Everything is clear so far as the jack is concerned. I can rotate the wheel
(slowly but evenly) with the tyre just clear of the ground so I don't think
ovalisation could be the cause. Thanks for your response.

Is the jack pinching the handbrake cable (or worse still the hydraulic flexi
pipe)? Unlikely to be, but just raising it further (from before) could put more
force on. Have you tried lowering it to the where it was at first to see if it
frees up again? How far was the wheel rotated? Is the drum ovalised and has now
reached a tight spot?

About the fumes: it is only apparent when top is off, so not coming from
inside.Looks like the rear is making too much turbulence, causing low pressure
behind the occupants.
So maybe a wind deflector mx5-like can help.
Has anyone fitted a wind deflector?

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: 2+2 distributor

2017-03-28 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
The fault might simply be that the lead into the top of the distributor cap is
working itself loose. Using a company car I had the embarrassing experience
of calling the company workshop staff out on a 30 mile return trip at 10.30
p.m. as I was returning from a meeting in the Midlands. The engine had cut out
and I had coasted to a halt at a dangerous point where the road passed an
airfield.

The fitter arrived sometime around 11.15 p.m. opened the bonnet, pushed down on
the lead in the socket on the top of the distributor and said, 'Now try it', it
started and ran faultlessly all the way back to the Ford Research and
Engineering Centre where the car, and I, were based.

As I expect you have been told already the connection to the crankshaft
position sensor is also a potential trouble spot.

Unless you can see anything obviouse (eg black 'tracking' or burn out contact
on cap) it's probably the black unit on the side, in which case it's possibly
cheaper (just as easy?) to get one of those and fit to the part you have.

Thanks everyone, and specially Chris. I'm familiar with the spring clips and
had not seen a pair of screws to hold the cap before - so mine with the
screws must be Lucas. Are they completely interchangeable? There seem to be
many types available on the usual websites but as soon as I try to specify
the exact one I can't find one like that.

Does anyone know if they are all more or less the same and it doesn't matter
which one you use, so long as it has the same fitting? Does a recon one come
with an oil seal? Presumably a new one does? I have till the end of next
month to get this car going, I don't want to go to Stoneleigh in my tin top
Suzuki!

Thanks again, Mike

there were many failures even in cars less than three years old. Does
anyone know of this? From one website I discovered that the correct
distributor is a Bosch type 0 237 521 019 but I can't find one of those.
The Haines manual says Bosch or Lucas but gives no part number.. Nearest I
found was type 0 237 601 001, Ford part number 84SF 12100 FA.

Has anyone had a distributor problem with this engine, and what type did
they use to replace it? It might be that the two types I've mentioned are
effectively identical or there might be sufficient difference that while
the one I can find will physically fit it won't work properly or even at
all! Advice please so I can get going again!

Many thanks, Mike

couldn't find anything in the history, so thought it was original.

Of the history I got there does seem a gap, which could be explain by the
history you still have.

Please help us to Set up an Independent Pump-Watch body to monitor and regulate
vehicle fuel pricing.

You may be surprised to learn that how much we pay to fill up our cars vans and
trucks isn’t regulated at all. And having no government watchdog or independent
pricing body means that how, when and why forecourt prices rise and fall is a
closely guarded secret. We think that’s wrong!

The FairFuelUK Campaign’s 1.3 million supporters along with hundreds of MPs and
their constituents want this to change.

We’re recommending an independent Pump-Watch body to ensure everybody
understands how road fuels are priced and that the 37 million drivers in the UK
get the fairest and most transparent deal possible. So, if you can’t understand
why fuel prices rise almost overnight but take weeks to go down, please sign
this E petition.

Background: In last 3 weeks’ diesel, base supply cost is down 11.66%, the
published wholesale cost is down 4.07%, YET at the pumps as to what we pay when
we fill up it is UP 3.81% - Similarly for petrol: base cost down 9.84%,
wholesale down 3.42%, BUT at the pumps it's UP 3.20%

We have the support of many MPs who are fighting on your behalf regarding the
benefits to the UK economy in the last 5 years’ of our hard fought for fuel
duty freezes and now the need for a real cut in duty. As importantly, because
of your fantastic support of the FairFuelUK Campaign, they are also putting our
case for a new watchdog to police pricing at the pumps. PumpWatch

MPs such as Charlie Elphicke, Maria Caulfield, Rob Flello, Drew Hendry, Jason
McCartney, Sammy Willson, Danny Kinahan, Angus McNeil, Fiona Bruce, John
Stevenson, Gordon Henderson, Peter Aldous and many more from all parties
support FairFuelUK’s fight for lower fuel taxation and transparent pump pricing.

Just wanted to type up a quick note about Adrian Flux.. Well technically
Bikesure, but that’s just one of their brand names. I’ve seen the odd bad
press about insurance brokers here before, so wanted to post a positive one.

Was about to go out on my quad the other day, when I realised my insurance cert
had lapsed. So bought a policy through them on-line. All good

Next working day I got a note to give them a call, which I did, they pointed
out I may have missed a mod (they had it insured the previous year and noticed
the difference)… They changed the policy for me, no fee, no fuss.

A week later I realised that I did have insurance in place – it had in fact
auto renewed, I’d just been daft and forgotten / not printed off the new cert.
One call later and everything was cancelled and refunded 100%, again no fee or
fuss.

Just wanted to mention this, as I used to insure my Quantum with them and also
had previous good service. The only negative I suppose is that I wished they’d
notice that I had two policies on the same vehicle, however can’t blame them
too much for me being stupid!

Re: [Quantum Owners] MPG

2016-03-01 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
If the weight of an engine makes so much difference it might be interesting to
know how much difference it makes when Jon drives with and without a passenger
(adhering to the same limits as he would have done with the trailer).

Using a well known diesel powered estate car I towed an aerodynamically styled
enclosed box trailer containing a table and six chairs on a 200 mile trip.
The contents which were carried on one leg of the journey, seemed to make no
difference but the trailer increased the fuel consumption by about 40%.

I have to add I use the limit.to the limit in as much as 60 MPH
whenever possible and acceleration is let the engine spin on a light pedal.
My turbo 2+2 struggles to better 30 mpg but then again that woosh of power is
corruptive!

Well I had to get a 2 Litre Triumph engine transported 180 miles and my only
tool was my Quantum 2+2 and a 5ft x 3ft trailer that had no cover on it, hence
an aerodynamic brick!
I brimmed the tank and sat nav and speedo were used to find out what my
standard Weber carb XR2 engined Quantum got to the gallon. Wow 37 mpg dragging
engine up and a staggering 43 mpg on return journey still with the trailer and
no cover but empty.
What mpg do others on here get?

Pretty sure mine had one.
I think it was one of those things that Quantum changed through production and
depended on which size rear wheel cylinders were used as well.

I would go on the principle that if it has one now then put it back, if it
doesn’t then don’t.

Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Quarter Glass

2016-02-07 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
I think that the rouge might well only deal with superficial scratches as it
might be thought of as a kind of 'T Cut for Glass'
Windscreen blemishes eg stone chips are repaired by filling with some form of
clear plastic substance. Might be worth talking to a windscreen reairer to see
if your window glass scratch could be filled.

Wow. Okay. I have a scratch currently on the glass and thought I'd just get
another one. Perhaps I'll just leave it. Any advice on how to remove
scratches from glass? It's quite deep.

Re: [Quantum Owners] The ultimate fully electric 2+2

2016-01-31 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
Electric boot releases can be found on the Quantum coupe but some owners found
them troublesome and got rid of them

There are a number of overlays for domestic and car seats which include massage
rollers and some of these include heating - some operate both in house and in
car.

My own feeling about electric cars (motorbikes and electric bicycles) is that
the first target should be operating range, speed (ability to keep up with
standard vehicles in the conditions where the electric car is to be used),
comfort features are 'Luxuries' which can only be afforded if the power
available is such that use of them does not affect speed and range.

Many diesel engined cars are all but impossible to steer without some form of
power steering because of the weight and location of the engine. It might be
that the motor and battery layout in an electric Quantum would present the same
problem but equally it might be possible to eliminate the need for power
steering, e.g. using a trailer mounted generator or housing the batteries in a
trailer rather than on board.

I wish you all the best for your project.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] The ultimate fully electric 2+2

My conversion of a 2+2 with Mk4 dash is well underway now with the help of the
kids at my school! Everything has been stripped back, modified subframe for
electric motor/batteries has been galvanised, all suspension components
sandblasted and repainted and about to start putting it all back together after
bodyshell painted. I will be fitting electric GM power steering, using petrol
tank space for suspended space saver spare wheel, ceramic heater in place of
heater exchanger from engine, and the batteries will be divided between the
space behind the back seat as well as above gearbox/motor.
I write here to ask members for ideas/experience for how to soup it up to be
the ultimate electric 2+2. Ideas and help on the following as well as things I
haven't thought of would be appreciated:

I'd like heated front seats (as no warm engine!). Any ideas on heated
production/sporty seats that fit nicely in the 2+2 or will I have to retrofit
heater elements in XR2 seats? Or even heated electric adjustment seats?

Has anyone found easy way to do electric boot release or is it just a case of
engineering/fitting a solenoid?
Can brake servo be fitted directly to back of brake pedal box as there is space
now with no engine (the angles on the bar are not quite identical hence the
question).
Has anyone got advice or quality bits for sale that can help me build the
ultimate fully electric 2+2?

Re: [Quantum Owners] New model?

2016-01-16 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
Not so sure about the car but is there not a danger that people might think of
you as being 'stuck up', just a passing thought for amusement only.

However if you take the concept to its logical conclusion you would produce
something similar to the Citroen based Romahomes that used bodies produced
initially by Island Plastics on the Isle on the Isle of Wight.

Someone in Norwich combined an Island Plastics style body with a Reliant Fox
pick-up. A very rare beast.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Coolant thermostat

2016-01-16 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
If I am right in suggesting that a thermostat that fails to open correctly
stops the flow of coolant from the engine to the radiator and that one which
opens too soon or sticks open, or is missing altogether causes the engine to
run cold because the engine coolant flows through the radiator at all times
what is read on the temperature gauge depends on the location of the
temperature sensor.

If a gauge is working at all and sensing the temperature of the coolant within
the engine block there seems to be little possibility that the gauge would not
respond in the same way as the sensor for the electric fan. If it is hot enough
for the fan to run it must show on the gauge.
On the other hand the temperature gauge might be monitoring the temperature of
the coolant within the radiator or some other point between the thermostat and
the radiator, thus showing a low temperature because of the thermostat failing
to open.

Thermostat test - I believe the time honoured test is to put it in a pan of
water and bring it to the boil.

T/C engines - RS turbo thermostats are designed to open at a lower temperature
than those for n.a. engines.

Funny you shuld say that, as I thought I had the problem again.. however
it just seems to be the gauge not moving, as the heater gets hot within a
mile. For the last year the gauge has never gone above O on the NORM section
of the scale, even when it's very hot and the fan comes on. I shall be
getting the meter out, and earthing the wire as a test once we have some
spring weather.

Hi All,

I have fitted various thermostats in the past and most seem to control the
coolant temp fine for a few months and then get colder and colder until the
running temp hits the bottom of the gauge. Occasionally one I have had runs
for years and is fine. I recall there was a thread about this some time
ago, what was the outcome? Is there a particular make we need to buy? At
present I have one of each in the two Q’s so see the direct comparison every
week as I drive one then the other, so I know I am not just imagining it!

Thanks everyone. I got it working. The bracket wasn't in place
correctly so
when I was turning the screw, nothing was happening.

They are
now as high as they can be but it still might not be enough. I'm
taking it
down to the garage who will be doing the MOT again to get the
lights
tested/aligned. I just hope they are high enough if not I'm in

trouble!

They must be high enough though because how did it pass the
previous MOT's?
This is the first time I've had an issue with the
lights.

Re: [Quantum Owners] Re: Quantum H4 for sale

2015-05-21 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
If you found someone with cover to drive cars not owned or hired by him/her
they could take the car to the MOT station on your behalf and return it to you.

The other consideration is that if you are insured you can take the car to any
MOT station, provided you have an appointment, which might get round a delivery
problem if the car was MOT'd somewhere convenient for the new owner.

These suggestions are made in good faith but you would be wise to check them
out rather than relying on my word.

If I thought an MOT would inflate the value I would do the work but by the time

All the nurses here now know what Quantim is :-)
Robin Jenkins is working hard to keep things on track with Karens help. I also
would like to share some very good news, that early next year we are starting
another member of staff due to the amount of work booked in for 2015
This will leave me time to concentrate on my recovery. The experts think I will
be walking again soon despite still being mostly paralised down my left side
There is still much to look forward to in 2015 including some very special
development work currently under way for the first 3 models of Quantums that I
hope to reveal at Stoneligh.
So with so much to look forwaard to, i will concentrate on getting back on

whilst you people stay safe this winter whilst Quantuming.

Re: [Quantum Owners] rear brake

2014-06-12 Thread 'Michael Hughes' via Quantum Owners Group
Luxury cars with discs all round often have small drums built into the
disc on the rear wheels, which is used for the parking brake. The
reason being that if you park a disc braked car on an incline, with
very hot discs when the discs cool the car can start to slide down the
incline.

Handbrake is actually much better -

No you are correct - Absolute waste of time/effort/money, and will
probably end up with an inferior braking system (certainly on the
handbrake).
If you have a rear engined car, and are using it on the track, then
maybe
Kish - It will probably affect (adversely) that new insurance you have
as well.

I am sure I have heard people who have done this say it is not worth
the effort as there is not a lot of weight at the back end, unless it
is purely an aesthetic requirement. Come on somebody back me up or am
I losing my mind?
