Even if you're able to install it, it doesn't work. I tried restoring a backup
of a Win7 VM that I had been using in Qubes 3.2, and while it starts correctly
the VM crashes within seconds.

I'm suspecting it happens when the Windows VM attempts to communicate over the
network. But I have nothing more than circumstantial evidence to that fact.

Thanks for the detailed write-up. Based on the steps you've provided, it 
appears that the TPM is present in /sys/class/devices/tpm, but no PCRs are 
present and it's not possible to take ownership of the TPM with 
tpm_takeownership. Did you get further on this, e.g. to setup anti-evil-maid?

The "ORWL" is a fraud - 100% marketing 0% real security/privacy, if I 
was you I would send it back and buy a KCMA-D8 or a TALOS 2 depending on 
how much performance you need and how much you are willing to spend. (D8 
is FSF RYF and FSF RYF is pending for the T2, both have real open source 
firmware)


The firmware and hardware is entirely closed source and their marketing 
method of "reading it out to prove it hasn't been modified" relies in 
the cooperation of the firmware itself thus a modified firmware could 
simply send you a "clean" version as you aren't reading directly from a 
flash chip.


What "ORWL" mean by "open source hardware" is that they publish the 
layout files of the motherboard - thats it - there is nothing open 
source about the standard intel hardware they use.


It bothers me that people waste money on these slickly marketed frauds 
rather than spend on real libre hardware, some people even whine about 
the "overpriced" actual libre hardware but think nothing of spending 2K 
on a not really libre purism or what not - truly an example of the power 
of a slick marketing campaign.


My lord for the price of an "commercial grade ORWL" using crap standard 
(not even xeon) closed source intel hardware one could buy a TALOS 2, 
much much faster and for once actually open source hardware (one even 
has documentation on the POWER9 CPU and can modify the microcode as they 
please, thus entirely owner controlled) - another advantage of it being 
that one can use POWER-KVM and POWER-IOMMU virtualization technoogy to 
have many separate people using the same server with separate graphics 
cards, keyboards, mice, screens etc making the price palatable even for 
business desktop use.


(I only include recent hardware in this list, no one wants a X200)
Real open source hardware:
TALOS 2 (FYI this is fairly priced for server hardware in its 
performance class, it isn't meant for people who simply want an open 
source motherboard, of which a D8/D16 is better suited - it is meant for 
those who need extreme levels of performance and security) RYF cert 
pending on release

Novena laptop

Real open source firmware motherboards:
(No PSP/ME - can use coreboot with open source silicon init, vs purisms 
closed source silicon init coreboot)

KGPE-D16 - FSF RYF
KCMA-D8 - FSF RYF (this is what I use, $250 for mobo $40 for CPU and I 
play the latest games in a VM)

Lenovo G505S

If you don't have the cash for a T2 the D8/D16 have a quality 
feature-set including OpenBMC for open source remote management, one can 
also use them to play games in a VM as they have an IOMMU.

[qubes-users] Recover Windows after installing Q4.0

Hi All, 

I installed qubes in legacy mode the installation went perfect

After I change back my boot settings to UEFI, I get an error saying bootable 
device not found

As suggested previously by one of the members I ran the command sudo cfdisk 
which does seem to show info about windows. 

Is there any way I can boot back into windows. I desperately need help with 
this. 

So if I run sudo cfdisk in dom0 it shows

/dev/sda1 EFI system
/dev/sda2 Microsoft System
/dev/sda3 Microsoft basic data
/dev/sda4 Windows recovery environment
/dev/sda5 Bios boot
/dev/sda6 Linux
/dev/sda7 Linux

So in windows I created a partition on my harddrive with 80 gb space. Installed 
qubes on that space to dual boot.

Initially with uefi mode I wasn't able to install it, so switched to Legacy.

But falling back to uefi won't boot into windows

Hi, 

So if I run sudo cfdisk in dom0 it shows

/dev/sda1 EFI system
/dev/sda2 Microsoft System
/dev/sda3 Microsoft basic data
/dev/sda4 Windows recovery environment
/dev/sda5 Bios boot

In my boot menu I changed to Legacy in order to try and install qubes which did 
sucessfully.

After the installation I restarted the computer in Bios switched to UEFI back 
again and restarted

I get an error saying no bootable device

In dom0 run 'sudo cfdisk' (assuming you only have one disk - if not ,use
cfdisk /dev/sda, or cfdisk /dev/sdb)
That command will show you the partitions on your disk and you should
be able to see if you still have the Windows partitions.

If you had Windows booting in UEFI mode, and you have switched to legacy
boot, that would explain why you cant now boot Windows. It IS possible
to mix boot modes - first establish exactly what position you are in and
then we may be able to help.

If you search this list you will find some proposed solutions -  you
need to stop the kernel from hiding the usb controllers from dom0 and
then stop sys-usb from booting because that will then capture the
devices.

There was a thread on this a couple of months back - "How to recover
Qubes when keyboard / mice is dysfunctional due to USB qubes setup
issues?"
Look at my proposal and see if you can fit it to your case.

The instructions worked great:
I right clicked on the desktop, highlited 'personal', selected Firefox from the
context menu.
Firefoxed worked, so I navigated to this forum, found this thread and copied
the line to install Chromium.

I opened a Fedora25 template, terminal and
input -
sudo dnf install --enablerepo=google-chrome google-chrome-stable

answered 'yes' a couple of times and success. It was done.

Back to dom0, right click on the desktop, selected applications, right clicked
on Fedora 25 template and there was no Chromium, which I expected to look just
like the personal Firefox.

Did I do something wrong? What might I have missed?

BTW, I am a newbie, I have installed v3.2 for a couple weeks, moved to v4.0
(experienced unstable USB), and loaded v4.0 rc1, rc2, and now rc3. USB keeps
getting more stable. Sometimes the laptop still boots up without a keyboard or
mouse.

What no one who has responded to you has pointed out is that you are
making a basic mistake about the use of Templates. There is absolutely
no reason why you cant configure a Template, as you like.
DVM Templates can be configured, but need not be. They exist so that you
can rapidly spawn DisposableVMs.

The simplest way to get what you want is to fire up a Template (perhaps
cloned from a base template), open Firefox in the template and configure
it as you wish - install add-ins, change search engines etc.(To do this
or at least some of it you will of course have to open the firewall.)
Then qvm-create new appVMs based on that template - each will inherit the
base settings and each can be separately configured with new add-ins.
Bookmarks will be saved on a per appVM basis.

Be aware of course that each appVM will be linked by virtue of the
common template. If you are particularly keen to keep some qubes
separate, then I would suggest using different templates with different
browsers. Just a thought.

Edit:  Sorry, I meant vmlinuz files, not initramfs img files. Then
again, my systems use Legacy Boot rather than EFI; I'm not sure if they
get properly deleted automatically on a proper EFI system.

actually dual booting on my system and set a partition of 80 gb on my hard

I finally had time to play around with this and I hit the same issue in
my FC 26 build template (dkms status u2mfn yields an empty string). I
don't know how my machine got into this state in the first place (I
suspect it was an issue upgrading from FC25 to FC26), but it's easily
fixable.

Two things to do:

First, verify the version of u2mfn in /usr/src of your build template by
running:

ls /usr/src

There *should* be only one version, but in my case I had two (if anyone
else out there is in the same boat, read on).

Second, we need to tell dkms of u2mfn's existence. 3.2.5 is the latest
version of u2mfn, so I'm going to assume this is the one we're going to
be working with. To fix the empty string issue, simply re-register the
module with dkms by running:

sudo dkms add -m u2mfn -v 3.2.5

And that should fix it. You can verify it by running:

dkms status u2mfn

and it should no longer return an empty string.

Now, if you have an older version of u2mfn in there (in my case, it was
3.2.4 which was the FC25 version), you'll need to remove it.

Run:

sudo rpm -e qubes-kernel-vm-support

and it'll spit out the full package names of the two versions of the
package on your system.

To remove the older one (I'll assume it's 3.2.4), you would run rpm -e
with the full package name (ex. sudo rpm -e
qubes-kernel-vm-support-3.2.4-1.fc25 or something like that).

BUT it will probably not work because that version of the module isn't
registered with dkms either. So you'll need to do the same thing as with
3.2.5 above:

sudo dkms add -m u2mfn -v 3.2.4

And then you can re-run the rpm -e command again and this time, it
should work and your system should be back to its expected state.

Note that for anyone on R3.2, you *won't* be able to compile kernel 4.14
on an FC26 template because it will link to FC26's openssl-1.1.0 and
FC23 only has openssl-1.0.2 and thus it won't install in dom0. You'll
either need to compile that kernel on an FC25 template or older (which
sucks, since FC25 is EOL on Dec. 12), *or* figure out how to upgrade
openssl in R3.2 dom0 to version 1.1.0 (possible, but not trivial).

[qubes-users] Q4.0 rc-3 Install error

Hi,

The exact error I am getting while starting the installation problem. 

Error summary 
At least 3 mb more space needed on the /boot/efi filesysystem

I really want to install the os. Any suggestions. 

Also I am trying to dual boot qubes.

How to do I get Chrome up?

The instructions worked great:
I right clicked on the desktop, highlited 'personal', selected Firefox from the 
context menu.
Firefoxed worked, so I navigated to this forum, found this thread and copied 
the line to install Chromium.

I opened a Fedora25 template, terminal and
input -
sudo dnf install --enablerepo=google-chrome google-chrome-stable 

answered 'yes' a couple of times and success.  It was done.

Back to dom0, right click on the desktop, selected applications, right clicked 
on Fedora 25 template and there was no Chromium, which I expected to look just 
like the personal Firefox.

Did I do something wrong?  What might I have missed?  

BTW, I am a newbie, I have installed v3.2 for a couple weeks, moved to v4.0 
(experienced unstable USB), and loaded v4.0 rc1, rc2, and now rc3.  USB keeps 
getting more stable.  Sometimes the laptop still boots up without a keyboard or 
mouse.

delete the existing OS as well? I’ve partioned 80 gb to install Qubes and the 
other partition contains windows 10.

Here is what i have done, not perfect but might help:
i have started a vm as soon as i have installed Qubes (at this point
every vm has equal level of trust, in your case use a trusted one).
set up all the firefox settings: instal addons, clear bookmarks, change
settings...
After i copied the whole firefox profile in each vm so that in each vm
that need firefox you have a good base settings.
In the end i have fixed minor things like installing flash only in
untrasted domain. adding the bookmark of bank in banking.

As far as i know the only way is to set up every vm manually, but as i
said you can start from a good level of personalization and tweek only
minor settings.

you can have bookmarks and custom settings also in dispvm (at least in
3.2, i haven't installed 4 yet)

If I understand your needs correctly, you can setup each VM/firefox to
use the Firefox sync using the same firefox account, and then adjust the
firefox account configuration to only sync the add-on's. Most people
want bookmarks sync'ed, but then that is easily turned off in that
account configuration. The bookmarks won't change but you will bet
add-on updates in each VM.

If you can generalize the Firefox settings you could store a list of your
bookmarks in your Archive VM and copy and paste them out as needed. That
would let you use disposable templates. I think 4.0 also lets you have
multiple disposable VM templates. You could have three templates with
high, medium, low security settings for example and launch disposable VMs
from those, then copy and paste your shortcuts to those.

If there is nothing on the drive you need to keep, choose the "I need to
recover space" option in the installer. Mark the top level of the tree so
EVERYTHING on the drive will be deleted. Let the Qubes/Xen installer
Auto-partition your space.

Boot from a USB or CD live image on the same machine, mount the internal
drive, and edit.

You might also want to try switching from UEFI boot to legacy in the BIOS
and reinstalling. Turn off Secure Boot while you are in there.

Can't help with that specific issue but as a workaround you can assign one
of your USB controllers directly to the AppVM. Look under "Finding the

I just had this problem. When making boot on Rufus did you make it on dd disk 
or iso? Iso is what i did that made my mistake. Doing the dd had no errors.

there.

If you want to try again once you get keyboard and mouse back, you can
manually create a sys-usb qube by carefully following the documentation on
that page under "Alternatively, you can create a USB qube manually as
follows:". It's for 3.2 but at first glance should work for 4.0 too.
Figure out which USB controller handles your keyboard and mouse and DO NOT
assign that one to sys-usb, but assign all the rest.

Blacklisting the controllers is an optional next step.

[qubes-users] Q4.0 rc-3 Installation

Hello ,
I tried installing Qubes4.0 rc-3, and installation went through halfway and 
caused error. The error said it was caused by anaconda installer. Second time 
the installation fails in the beginning after about a min.

Error description says:
At least 3MB more required for /boot/efi

Any suggestions on what can be done? I tried installing it on a machine which 
had Qubes3.2 before.

[qubes-users] Qubes R4: DispVM Template vs DispVM initial startup vs startup usability bug?

When trying to start a DispVM for the first time, it actually starts the
DispVM template such as whonix-ws-dvm. After shut down, using the very
same shortcut to start the DispVM, it starts an actual DispVM starting
Disp[...]. The user may be confusing the DispVM template for the actual
DispVM since there is no graphical explanation what is happening. Is
that right? If so, shall we open a usability bug?
