On Fedora 34/Qubes 4.0, I also had this WiFi (TP-Link/Realtek - rtl8192ee)
connection issue after doing the Fedora update that updated the
wpa_supplicant to version 2.10.

SOLUTION: Downgrade wpa_supplicant to version 2.9

[qubes-users] Boot hold after update

2021-01-09 Thread 'A E' via qubes-users
I've been trying to install Qubes on an external hard drive to test it
out but I've ran into an issue. I've followed this guide

since it's the same laptop I have (System76 Darter Pro).

I changed out the wifi card and was able to run the updates in dom0:

sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest

sudo qubes-dom0-update kernel-latest-qubes-vm

After each update, I restart my computer and then set the new kernel to
current (5.9.14-1 in both the kernel and vm). However, after I update
the vm I'm prompted for another update to dom0 and the whonix gateway
template. I run those, and restart my computer and that's where I run
into problems.

I'm prompted to input my decryption password in a GUI that's showing a
progress bar for the boot process, and then it takes me out of the GUI
into a "Started Accounts Services" list and continues to try and boot
until it says "Starting Hold until boot proce
ss finishes up..." and it
will just sit there for as long as I'll let it. I'm unable to
Ctrl+Alt+F2 or Ctrl+Alt+F1 into a terminal or GUI, or interact with it
in any way (no cursor, typing, etc.). Reboots don't fix it.

I tried a fresh install after the first time this happened and followed
the same steps, and the same thing happened. I tried searching but
couldn't find anything to try. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: [qubes-users] Why Fedora?

2020-08-12 Thread E. Foster
Great discussion,

In many industries a vendor analysis is conducted on a multitude of parameters
to indentify the best vendor. As many from outside the Qubes world have
gravitated to Qubes for those reasons.

>From what I am reading, we need all hands on deck and a war chest.
>Ideologically, you are doing what most IT enterprises whish they could do.
>From a user stand point, updates are a risk if you can't roll them back.

There was a mention of a 3rd party vendors that provides installation bridges
and how they need to be trusted. Currently, I am trying to figure out how to
install and application directly from the vendor in order to limit the possible
number of attackers. Is this above my proficiency level? Very likely, but the
alternative is to have a 3rd party decide what/when/where to update a scrip or
what to copy, delete, and modify my data.

Let me give you another example: did you know that SIM cloning and credit card
scams can occur because of insider access?

Will paranoia become the new normal? Or can we make good assumptions or
decissions based on past experiences?

Let's keep moving forward,

[qubes-users] Whonix configuration

2020-07-23 Thread E

Greetings,

I had a question about configuring the Whonix network connection.  It
has to do with a possible timer associated with an exterior facing IP
address.  How can a exiting IP become static. On several occasions,
websites log out a user for changing the IP address.  Somehow, it's
associated with a timer.  Would that be the network timer at the bottom
of the network tab in qubes settings?

thanks for clarifying,

[qubes-users] How to configure a Zoom install

2020-07-19 Thread E

Greetings,

Over the past few weeks, I've successfully installed zoom as a template
VM and as a disposable VM, using the Gdebi installer. The template has
no network connection but the dspVM has sys-whonix.  Mind you, the VMs
have been updating periodically over the past few weeks as well.  Yet, I
don't seem to be able to get the logs.

When I try to connect to a meeting room, it doesn't connect and at best
I get a 5003 error.  I've noticed that there are proxy settings
available in the login window such as:

Configure proxies to access the internet:

 * no proxy
 * use system proxy settings
 * Manual proxy configuration:

                Http proxy:  port:

                Https Proxy:    Port:

 * Automatic proxy configuration URL

I am currently using the system proxy settings.  I've sent in reports
for assistance to Zoom but haven't receive any feedback. My firewall is
to set to block as sites except zoom.us and zoom.com.

Bizarrely, I can't resolve the zoom site via a browser in the Zoom dspVM
or any dispVMs.  Something doesn't seem right.

If I didn't have to use it, I wouldn't; however, many organizations do
use it and by default I have to as well.  Has this issue been observed
by others in the community?  Or is there a network/connection fix that I
am not aware of?

Ultimately, i just want to use zoom with a sys-whonix network as a
disposable VM so no artifacts are left on my device.

Any assistance would be useful as I believe I am not alone with this issue.

Thanks,

[qubes-users] Deleting a user created template VM, using dom0

2020-07-17 Thread E

Greetings,

I created a template a while back for emails using thunderbird and I
recently tried to delete it via the qubes manager.  So, the VM was
deleted and no longer appears in the qubes manager window, yet an icon
still remains in the qubes VM drop down menu with the same name as the
VM deleted but the icon has changed from a lock to a square and the only
application associated with the vm is a firefox browser.   Also, I can't
access the VMs terminal or settings application, nor do I remember if
the VM was set to auto back-up.

It's most likely an artifact from the VM,  and I am assuming I can use
dom0 to delete the artifact but I don't know the command.

Could some one help with the code to delete an appVM from the qubes VM
drop down menu using dom0.

Thanks,

Re: [qubes-users] Verifying VM updates and packages

2020-07-16 Thread E
Logic would dictate that an update is pushed to the all affected VM.
But, what I am now concerned with is the update packages that might be
altered in transit from ISP.

**Side note, I came to Qubes because I was not satisfied with the
security protocols offered by MS OS.**

I will try updating from the terminal session.  can you correct me on
the command:

user@VM $ sudo update ???   (are update commands package specific)

Bizarrely, I've seen some VM are now labeled localhost?

I am concerned about the file system corruption.  How can I change the
system, or should I attempt a new install?

Thanks,

This. Qubes Updater (Qubes menu/System Tools) runs periodically and
checks for updates in repos.

Bizarrely, I have a VM and Template VM that keeps requesting to be updated
and fails.

Try updating the template from a terminal session on it.

And lastly, how many times can a device be rebooted before you should be
concerned about Xen issues.

Until the hardware fails, I guess. Unless you're talking about hard
power offs, in which case I'd be most concerned about file system
corruption over any Xen issues.

[qubes-users] Verifying VM updates and packages

2020-07-06 Thread E. Foster

Hi,

I've seen several pop-ups for VM updates, since the initial installation.
And I was wondering what would cause such an action.

Do the VMs push a notification to update the VM when you make a change in
the settings on the devices' next boot?

Or do some updates occur because a template VM has been changed in a
repository, and the update package is then pushed to the respective VMs
using the template?

b/c

Bizarrely, I have a VM and Template VM that keeps requesting to be updated
and fails.

I'm assuming it's an installer application, I installed...but why would it
not update?

Must I remove the application from the menu, delete it/and reinstall it?

And lastly, how many times can a device be rebooted before you should be
concerned about Xen issues.

Thanks so much for the insight,

Re: [qubes-users] Updating Linux and Whonix

2020-07-01 Thread E. Foster
Thanks for the reply,

I finally started working on the appVMs with the docs in hand. I've had to
restart my apps designs from the start after reading some of the docs.
You're right, there a lot of apps. I am now trying to find the libre
office ones to install in a template hopefully I can get in done in the
next few days. As a matter of fact, I found this passage.

in disposablevm-customization.md qvm-prefs:

You can set an appVM as a template for a disposableVM.

*qvm-prefs fedora-26-dvm template_**for_**dispvms True*

However, when I tried it I would get the following returned messages:

*qvm-prefs: error: no such property: 'template_for_dispVM'*

*qvm-prefs: error: no such property: 'template_for_dispms'*

However the exact syntax in the in the Docs show *template_**for_**dispms*.
Where for is in italics.

How would you activate italics in Dom0 to write the exact syntax? Or is
there another script that will accomplish the feat?

thanks,

Thanks for responding,

I was busy trying to figure out what to do, 1) work on 4.0.1 or 2)start
with 4.0.3. Finally, I decided to go with 4.0.3. So the install occurred
last week with the help of some members of the community. So now, I'd deep
dived into the config stuff. It's quite interesting and logical but the
comands-syntax is a bit rough. I just hope I don't comprimize my device
while I am it. If it weren't for my ISP trying to slow steam downloads I
might have sent you this email a few days ago.

Re: [qubes-users] Updating Linux and Whonix

2020-06-26 Thread E. Foster
Greetings,

Thanks for responding,

Yes you are correct. I made a visual mistake. I read through the
documentation a week or so ago and those were the version numbers I
retained. To answer your question: Install 4.0.3, Debian 10, Fedora30,
Whonix 15.

However, as you said, I should upgrade to Fedora 31. Or my system should
have upgraded it to Fedora 31. Other news flash, I did find the error in
parameters for setting up whonix connections without the signal. I had to
match the templates between advanced and basic in the settings for the VM.

None the less, I am still a little worried about what I did during the
upgrade process. Because, I can't seem to have any peripheral programs
such libre office or other in an accessible or visible manner. ( Currently
working on the installs). There are a lot of programs available for quick
install but once you believe you installed them. I can't find them in any
drop down menu. Perhaps, I did something wrong.

However, I am still working on the Zoom install, hopefully, I can figure
out how to upgrade to fedora 31, Is there a means to check for all internet
connections such as Netstat, so I can identify the IPs and block all the
others?

Thanks so much for your suggestions,

[qubes-users] Updating Linux and Whonix

2020-06-25 Thread E. Foster
Greetings,

I finally got latest version of Qubes installed. thanks for the
suggestions.

Yet, I ran through a few updates for Debian, Dom() and Whonix however the
version displayed did not change. From reading the documentation, The
updater should have updated to Whonix 16, and Fedora 35 or 36 as indicated
in the version table. It didn't. What I am trying to figure out were the
updates needed or suggested, because, I noticed a setting for whonix
(safest) was downgraded (to standard). In essence, I'd like to know how
to either remove the updates/revert or upgrade to the versions suggested in
the table? Is there also a way to set the ethernet/wifi to off, so that I
must physically turn it on before any connections take place. I suppose
the default is ON, however I was just asking.

Also, I've tried to set up a VM for Zoom with Whonix but the settings
manager for the VM displays a caution symbol. I didn't know you couldn't
use Whonix for the connection. The settings manager does allow
sys-firewall. Furthermore, I am having difficulty installing Zoom on
Fedora 30. Would any of you have some suggestions as to how to build a
Zoom VM or a work around for installing the rpm file. My background is
Windows and somehow Fedora is a slight leap of faith.

Thanks,

[qubes-users] Odly enough Rufus can't seem to create bootable USB

2020-06-14 Thread E. Foster
Greetings,,,

I tried to download 4.0.3 and create a bootable USB but rufus didn't see
the ISO folder? Does this occur often with this version? Is it still
better to use 4.0 and upgrade?

thanks,

[qubes-users] Getting started with Qubes (in steps)

2020-06-12 Thread E. Foster
Greetings,

I've been having a lot of difficulty over the past year with Qubes and I
wanted to know if I could get some help with the parameters, and
dependencies.

*1 set up the network connections*
 i.e. Wifi

*2 set up sys-firewall*

*3 set up the sys-net*
to use Wifi and Firewall

*4 set up sys-Whonix-gw*
to use the wifi, firewall and/sys-net

And a random DSVM that I could use to visit the net for instance.

***With the most general/secure parameters so that my system works.
Please be mindful, some of the automatic default settings might have
changed while I was tinkering with the Qubes OS.

In the past I worked on making clones but due to the dependencies I can't
delete/fix some of the VMs.

*Question:*

Would you know if this is the proper sequence of setting to set up a Qubes
system with the respective dependencies?

*and...*

Or perhaps, a hyperlink to a post where I could copy the commands or steps
to get these basic VM/services and my system working-online.

Once, secured and connected, I can update all the applications included in
the Qubes full install version.

Please forgive me, if I am not posting in sequence in other topical
threads.

Thanks,

No, but it seems that Qubes OS 4.0.3 doesn’t work with the Ryzen 3 3200G
(I think the last time I tried was in the end of January or in the
beginning of February 2020). You will have to try with the 4.1 version that
is currently under development. Or choose an older AMD processor or an
Intel processor instead. Or wait to use Qubes OS until a stable version of
4.1 comes out.

When it comes to the amount of threads - more is better than less, of
cause. And it will probably depend on what you’re going to use the PC for.
As I haven’t been able to run Qubes on the PC with the Ryzen 3 3200G CPU
yet, I can’t say anything about how well Qubes OS will run with this CPU,
for now.

Thanks.

Does Qubes OS 4.0.3 come with a minimal Template VM preinstalled, or do I
have to set it up myself first ?

It worked.

And it’s also possible to use the Alt key instead in the key combination
for secure copy and paste. Just write “Alt” instead of one of the other
keys.

Here (https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/5707) I got told by
Andrew David Wong that it is needed to delete the “#” sign on the edited
lines to change their status from a comment to a script that is going to be
executed.

So here are the steps to change the key combination for secure copy and
paste:

   1. Write this in the dom0 terminal (you might have to use root access):
   nano etc/qubes/guid.conf
   2. Change “Ctrl-Shift-c” to for example “Shift-Mod4-c” (Mod4 is the Win
   key)
   3. Change “Ctrl-Shift-v” to for example “Shift-Mod4-v”
   4. Delete the “#” sign in the beginning of this/these line(s) (to change
there status to a executive script).
   5. Save the file by pressing Ctrl + X, press Y and then Enter.
   6. Restart the pc to begin using the new key combination for secure copy
   and paste.

When I execute "sudo mount /dev/xvdi /mnt" in the terminal of the VM, I get
this error: “mount: /dev/xvdi/mnt: can’t find in /etc/fstab.

And I get this with both devices.

Thank you for your very quick response.

The mobile phone is listed as two devices:

1) sys-usb: sda - Disk ()

2) sys-usb: 1-3 - ..._Mass_Storage_Device_...

I have tried to attach both - one at a time - in the following way.

I attached it by clicking on the device icon -> The device (mobile phone
storage) -> The VM that I would like it to be attached to.

When attached, they both appear as such according to qvm-block and qvm-usb
in dom0.

When I attached the second one, and execute lsusb in the VM terminal where
it is attached to, it show up.

I don’t know how to check the attachment of the first device in the VM
terminal.

In the file manager of the attached VM under /proc/partitions, I find a
file that only displays partitions with xvd... I don’t know if the attached
partitions is some of these.

No, I haven’t been able to locate the directory of the mobile phone in the
file manager of the sys-usb VM either.

Any ideas on how to proceed... ?

According to the following page, it should be possible to change the keys
used for secure copy and paste text between different domains:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/copy-paste/#shortcut-configuration

But now I have tried to change the keys for secure copy and paste to
“Shift-Mod4-C” and “Shift-Mod4-V”. And restart the pc afterwards. But that
didn’t help either.

So I still can’t copy and paste text between different domains.

So it seems to be a bug that needs fixing...

Afterwards, I have mistakenly closed the window with Windows 10 in it. And
now I can’t figure out how to make the window visible again...

I have tried to click on different icons in the menu of the domain
ananon-win10 in the qube menu - also the one called “Start”. A message pops
up saying that the domain is started, but I can’t see a window where
Windows 10 is starting up.

Can someone tell me how to make the window visible again ?

When I execute the script in the terminal, the different windows versions
are listed. But when I copy the label of one of them and paste it on the
line below it and press enter, the terminal says that it doesn’t recognize
the command.

I have made a Windows domain and downloaded and installed Windows 7 and
Qubes Windows Tools by executing this script in dom0 according to this
guide (link: https://github.com/elliotkillick/qvm-create-windows-qube ):

chmod +x install.sh && ./install.sh

And now I would like to know how to get further.

I have made a thread here about making a Win10 HVM, so you are welcome to
answer there instead (I have just made this post in attempt to get a
quicker response):

I gave up after trying to install a KDE desktop as I didn’t know how to
make it work. Which was before I received suggestions on this.

Instead I chose to reinstall Qubes and use a password that only consist of
ASCII signs (as the xscreensaver doesn’t seem to be able to handle other
signs in the installed version that Qubes OS 4.0.3 comes with) and use an
easy way to shift the keyboard layout to the language I used to enter the
password with.

That works fine.

But I would prefer a screensaver that also could handle other signs than
just ASCII. As it would make it possible to construct a password that
consist of letters from a non latin alphabet. Which would mean that a
sentence in one language, would end up being rather random letters in
another language. And thereby make it more difficult to use online
wordbooks to break the code in case someone would try to do so.

And it would also make it possible to construct a password that consist of
letters from more than one type of alphabet to make it even more difficult
to break the code.

But of cause, with a key locker that can be overcome.

How well does Qubes OS actually protect against key lockers ?

I’ll make a new thread with that question...

I should probably also mention, that I haven’t tried to restart the pc
afterwards in case you would ask to the content of the script that the
terminal has outlined through the installation process.

I have just deleted the win-domain and run the command again.

I got Win 7 and the Qubes Win Tools installed, but got some errors on the
way...

This file does not exist: /var/lib/qubes/dom0-updates/var/cache

This folder does not exist: /var/lib/qubes/dom0-updates

Also:

“Failed to set locale, defaulting to C”

Three times: “UnicodeEncodeError: ‘ascii’ codec can’t encode character
‘\xe6’ in position ...: ordinal not in range(128)”

Eight times: “UnicodeEncodeError: ‘ascii’ codec can’t encode character
‘\xf8’ in position ...: ordinal not in range(128)”

Ends with: “Installation complete”

What shall I do now... ?

I can’t see how I can start Windows 7 in the Qubes Menu.

And the guide doesn’t say anything about how to open Windows 7 or what to
do next in relation to install Windows 10.

I have tried to install KDE in dom0 by using this command:

sudo qubes-dom0-update @kde-desktop-qubes

Then the terminal returned an error on the first line: As far as I remember
(I can only see the last 1.000 lines in the terminal), it returned
something like it couldn’t find or edit a specific xml file.

And then the installation process continued and got completed. I then
restarted the pc, and the only change I can see, is that there appear some
more program icons under Qubes menu -> System Tools.

For example “KDE System Settings”.

So as the desktop environment seems to look almost as before, I guess the
installation haven’t run properly, or am I wrong... ?

But in either case, I would like to know what I should do now.

Okay, I have seen here (link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fo45bo1jvZI )
that new versions of KDE uses less ram than XFCE.

Which version of KDE do you use in Qubes OS ?

And what are the cons with switching to KDE... ?

I shall probably mention that I’m a Linux and Qubes newbie.

To get through the whole installation process, can I then:

1) Somehow continue the installation process and if so how... ?

Or

2) Do I have to start the installation process from scratch again ?
And if so, shall I delete more than the windows domain, and if so what
?

I’ll try that.

But I have tried to change the “blank after” and “lock after” to 720
minutes and restart the pc afterwards. And there still seems to go just
about 10 minutes before the screen goes blank and lock. And I have checked
that the settings of the screensaver still say 720 after the restart, and
it does. But it doesn’t seem to make any difference...

If it isn’t possible to change the settings of the screensaver that Qubes
OS is actually using, then I would like to hear how I can either disable or
delete it in Qubes ?

It didn’t help to set “lock screen after” to 720. It still locks
immediately when the screen blanks.

I wonder if I actually have changed the settings of the screensaver that
Qubes uses at dom0, or just a unused one in the app menu similar to the
network manager in the same menu.

Yes, install.sh was copied to dom0. I just thought the terminal would say
so after it did this.

The pc is downloading now.

I wonder why Windows 7 has to be installed before Windows 10... especially
as Microsoft has stopped supporting it and it takes about 2 hours to
download it and I don’t have any product code for it. So maybe I can’t even
use it.

Besides that, I appreciate and thanks Elliot Killick for the easy to use
installation script.

Okay, I read your message again.

It shall just turn up in the file list of dom0.

I’ll look later.

Yes, that’s right.

I forgot to write that I also have tried that, and that didn’t work either.

I have also tried to use a UK keyboard layout in the terminal to be certain
with the same result.

It just keeps saying either nothing or “qvm-run: error: no such domain:
‘*work*’ ” And when it says nothing, I can’t see any new domain in the
Domain manager.

I have also tried using the work domain instead. But with the same result.

When I try to use “*” around the domaine name, it says there doesn’t exist
any domain with that name. And I have checked it was spelled correctly. And
I get the same result if I use the root account.

So I still need help to get further.

Every time the screensaver lock the screen, I need to reset/restart the pc
as I can’t know which keyboard layout is used and that is just a little bit
annoying ! 

So I hope someone can explain to me how I can get it to show the keyboard
layout or not locking the screen.

If that isn’t possible, can I then somehow disable or uninstall the
screensaver ?

Thank you.

I have tried to execute it in the user dom0, both:

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output untrusted "cat
'/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" > install.sh

and

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output “untrusted” "cat

It doesn’t seem to do anything...

Shall I run it with root access instead, or what shall I do ?

I have tried using the unsafe browser (as this domain also offer a file
manager as a shortcut) and safe the file in the domains download folder.
Here the file is suggested to be saved as “install.sh”.

And then I tried to execute the following script in dom0:

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output
 "cat '/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'" >
install.sh

But as expected, this part of the script has to be replaced by something
else:

I guess with something like a partition letter, but as I don’t know more
than this path; “'/home/user/Downloads/install.sh'” I need to be told what
I should write here instead.

So what shall I replace it with ?

Sorry, but I need a more detailed guide as I’m just a little bit more
skilled than a average Windows user and is both new to Linux and Qubes OS...

1) Can I download the files using any domain-browser or do I have to use a
specific one ?

2) Shall I save the installation script file with a specific name, and if
so what ?

3) Where shall I save the installation script file ?

and if so what ?

qvm-run -p --filter-escape-chars --no-color-output

install.sh

5)  I don’t get this: “Safer with escape character filtering enabled above;
qvm-run disables it by default when output is a file”.
Shall I do something to enable “character filtering”, and if so what ?

6) I guess I then just have to execute this in dom0: “chmod +x install.sh

7) If all goes well, is this the only thing I need to do afterwards to get

I want to install Windows 10 from a DVD in a new HVM and have begun
following this guide: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/windows-vm/

It says:

“Create a new Qube:
Name: Win10, Color: red
Standalone Qube not based on a template
Networking: sys-firewall (default)
Launch settings after creation: check
Click “OK”.”

As I’m going to install Win 10 from a DVD, shall I then just follow the
guide and choose “Launch settings after creation” or shall I choose
“Install from device” ?

It says here (link:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmesg ) that by
executing the command “dmesg” in the terminal, it returns the content of a
logfile that contains all the messages that is received by the message
buffer of the kernel, and their by contains the messages that the device
drivers produce.

So I guess this alone doesn’t mean that the USB devices are connected to
dom0. Or am I wrong... ?

When I installed Qubes OS 4.0.3, a USB mouse and keyboard was connected to
the pc, and therefore Qubes OS made a sys-net VM to manage both USB devices
and network - if I un

*New method tried that didn’t work*

I have tried another method which seems to work in Ubuntu and which I’ve
found here, but it didn’t work either:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/757638/can-not-connect-huawei-e3372-modem-on-ubuntu-15-10-please-help

*The method*

“Add a new network connection using Network Manager panel. The connection
type is 'Ethernet'. In Device Mac Address, select the mac address of your
modem and click 'Save'. This new connection should come up in your Network
Manager now. I hope this answer helps others.”

I’ve found the USB modem’s MAC address by running a Linux Live OS
(PartedMagic), and looked under System profiles -> Network -> Devices, and
wrote it down.

I then logged into Qubes OS, right clicked on the red network icon in the
menu -> Edit connections -> Add -> Ethernet.

Writing the MAC address in the input field beside “Device”, pressed Enter
and pressed Save.

And I have tried it both before and after I have connected the USB device
to sys-net VM.

*The problem*

Of course the problem is that the USB modem’s MAC address doesn’t exist in
the OS as long as the device isn’t recognized as a modem. So by entering
the MAC address in the Network Manager, there is just being entered an
address to a device which doesn’t match the MAC address of any device
according to the OS.

So somehow Qubes OS needs to recognize the device as a USB modem.

*Questions*

So the question remains: How can I get Qubes OS to recognize the USB device
as a modem... ?

And as some other Linux distros (Fedora ( see link:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/309370/4g-modem-works-only-on-livecd-in-fedora
),
Ubunto, Arch, Tails 4.2.2 and PartedMagic) is able to recognize the USB
device as a modem, it seems that Qubes OS miss something that makes it
possible for the OS to recognize the device as a modem.

For example in this forum the users said from dec. 2017 and onwards that
the modem Huawei E3372 is recognized and work with other Linux distros.

http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/bb/viewtopic.php?f=4=2756

An obvious question is then: What does these distros have which Qubes OS
doesn’t have, that makes them being able to recognize the device as a modem
?

And is it something that can be downloaded an added to Qubes OS to make it
recognize the device as a modem ?

If so, I would appreciate a download-link.

“One of the things that many users dont get is that Qubes is
just Linux/Xen under the hood.
So the answer to your question is (probably) "How do I rename a user
account in Linux", and the answer to *that* question is :
usermod -l new_name old_name

As `man usermod` will tell you, that ONLY changes the name - you probably
want to change the name of the home directory as well, but it isn't
strictly necessary.”

But is it possible... ?

Re: [qubes-users] How to connect to internet by using a mobile broadband USB modem ?

2020-01-30 Thread M E
This method didn’t change the result. The USB modem is still recognized by
Qubes OS as a USB storage device instead of a modem. All though it is
recognized as a modem by Tails 4.2.2 and by PartedMagic - both Linux live
OS’s.

And I have checked if I have written anything wrongly.

So I still can’t get any network connection.

So it would be nice to hear how others who use the same USB modem has
managed to get Qubes connected to the internet.

Fwd: [qubes-users] How to connect to internet by using a mobile broadband USB modem ?

2020-01-30 Thread M E
In the last link I send, it says:

Bus 001 Device 007: ID 12d1:14dc Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

There are two ID numbers separated by colons 12d1 & 14dc
These are your two original ID numbers and you are going to need them later
on in the same order, so write them down.
Next you need to be able to manually put your device into the correct mode
i.e get it working as a modem. The command for this will be:

$ sudo usb_modeswitch -J -v 0x12d1 -p 0x14dc
In which terminal shall I write this ?

Fwd: [qubes-users] How to connect to internet by using a mobile broadband USB modem ?

2020-01-30 Thread M E
Yes, I have also found something here:

Here it says that it should work well with kernel higher than 4.7:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/309370/4g-modem-works-only-on-livecd-in-fedora

Maybe this is more helpful, but I probably need som help if I’m going to do
this:

https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/huawei-e3372h-153-stick-mode-fedora-30-usb-modeswitch/3724

I will take a closer look on the last one as it seems to fit better with
what I’m experiencing although Qubes OS behave a little bit different...

I hope you will help me configure it correctly...

Fwd: [qubes-users] How to connect to internet by using a mobile broadband USB modem ?

2020-01-30 Thread M E
I’m new to both Linux and Qubes OS. I have only experience with windows and
mac. So the way to troubleshoot here in Linux is totally new for me.

qvm-pci in sys-net terminal returns “command not found” some text and “Curl
error (6)”.

The modem works both with PartedMagic Linux, Trails 4.2.2 and Windows 10.
And I have read that it also works with Fedora .

The USB modem has both drivers for Win 10, OSX and Linux on it.

I have tried to write “lsusb” in the dom0 user terminal. Here it recognizes
the USB modem:
ID 12d1:14dc Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

But when i run the same command in sys-net, there is only two devices
listed - even after I have mounted the storage drive to sys-net: “Adomax
Technology QEMU USB” and “Linux foundation 2.0 root hub”.

How shall I proceed... ?

Greetings,
I find this usb-sys or usb QVM discussion very interesting; however, I am a
bit lost in your discussion as my computer recognizes usb devices, yet I
don't know what type of security settings is included in the OS point
version. So, in order to practice what you're describling, I would need to
know what are the parameters. I just need to figure out how to create a
sys/VM that reads USB drives, while keeping the drive, domO,
Temps/standalone, safe.

How would you create a sys for USBs (files, apps, etc) ?
sys USB mouse(if needed)? (currently works, but I don't see sys-usb in the
drop down menu, but is it safe?)
sys USB biometric reader? (potentially a way to speed up logins or
temperature readings)

thanks,

There is another "bug" in 4.0.2-rc1. [1] "linux-firmware-20180402-83" was
released missing the file "amdgpu/polaris11_k_mc.bin". [2]
"linux-firmware-20181219-89" seems to fix the issue.

Most, if not all, Radeon GPUs based on Polaris 11 (Radeon RX 460/560 / Pro
450/455/460/560) attempting to install Qubes 4.0.2-rc1 ends up with the
error "X startup failed, aborting installation".

In dmesg, you get something like:
kernel: mc: Failed to load firmware "amdgpu/polaris11_k_mc.bin"
kernel: amdgpu :01:00.0: Fatal error during GPU init

I had a 4.0.2-rc1 working with a Radeon RX 560, [3] installing Qubes with a
kickstart file and [4] installing "linux-firmware-20190514-96.fc29".

[qubes-users] Qubes won't boot after installation

2019-04-12 Thread a . e . andreou
I have a Dell Precision 5530 with an i7-8850 and NVidia Quadro P2000. The hard
drive is a Class 40 M.2.

My issue is that after installing Qubes OS on my laptop the OS does not appear
when booting. The message I get is "No bootable devices found".

I have tried both the automatic formatting of the drive as well as several
custom configurations.

There is no other OS on the hard drive.

Again, thank you for this. Unfortunately, rolling back presents me with an
error message that "A transaction connot be undone" and mentions "No package
qubes-manager-0:4.0.28-1.fc25.noarch available."

I'm going to just live with it, and learn my lesson. Thanks again.

Thanks, Lorenzo. It is fixed now, however, I believe I made the mistake of
enabling the repo rather than just installing the package from the repo.
Nothing terrible happened, but now every time a new VM is started there's a
loud "pop" from my speakers, and it's uneffected by the volume control within
Qubes. Not terrible, but it means every time I open a disposable VM there's a
loud pop (I'll turn down my speakers).

If you or anyone has any suggestions regarding that that would be fantastic.

Thanks.
John

[qubes-users] "Qubes Devices" widget not working anymore

2019-04-04 Thread john . e . maher
For no apparent reason, when I plug a USB flash drive into my computer (Qubes
4.0) the Qubes Devices widget in the upper right no longer displays the device.
When I plug in the flash drive the system presents multiple black popups
indicating the drive is available, but nothing shows in Qubes Devices.

I'm using a USB qube called sys-usb, and this function used to work perfectly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

unman, thank you for being so generous with your time. I appreciate the
education. Yes, I was looking in appvms. I'm starting to understand better what
needs to be done. I'll see how far I get.

unman, thank you for this. I understand the difference now, and using qvm-run
-p in dom0 works fine. I cannot get qvm-run-vm to work, because I'm presented
with "Request refused". I don't understand the significance of
/etc/qubes-rpc/policy/qubes.VMShell, but I don't actually have a directory
called policy, so that file path is /etc/qubes-rpc/qubes.VMShell.

I can make this work using dom0, but I suspect (but don't know for sure) that
that is unwise.

unman, I don't have qvm-run (perhaps that's for 3.2?), and running hash command
example you gave (modified to point to a file that exists in the appvm)
produced no output. Specifically:

$ qvm-run vault 'md5sum file.kdbx'
Running 'md5sum file.kdbx' on vault

But no output. Any ideas?

Thanks.

[qubes-users] diff files across appvms

2019-01-22 Thread john . e . maher
Is it possible to compare (diff) files across appvms. Or (and), is it possible
to pass arguments to an appvm through a dom0 terminal.

Basically, I want to check if a Keepassxc file in my vault is different than a
Keepassxc file in my appvm.

Thanks for any ideas.

[qubes-users] Too small num_mfn in MSG_MFNDUMP

2018-09-25 Thread tyler . e . marshall
I am getting an error when the gui-daemon in dom0 receives a MSG_MFNDUMP
message from the domU gui-agent. Somehow the number of frame numbers reported
from the domU doesn't match up with the size of the window. I've posted the
log from the dom0 guid at the end of this message.

Initially, it looks like a window for gsd-xsettings is created just fine and
the dom0 receives the messages, no problem. For testing, I then started an
instance of xclock in domU and it runs into trouble when doing the mfndump.
Looking at the log messages, I can't tell if the size of the window is supposed
to be 164x164 or 1280x1024. Xclock is usually has a small application window,
but using either size, something erroneous is going on. There is some issue
when it comes to computing num_mfn. num_mfn is computed with the following
code snippet:

pixels = pixmap->devPrivate.ptr;

pixels_end =

pixels +

pixmap->drawable.width * pixmap->drawable.height *

pixmap->drawable.bitsPerPixel / 8;

off = ((long) pixels) & (4096-1);

pixels -= off;

num_mfn = ((long) pixels_end - (long) pixels + 4095) >> 12;

shmcmd.width = pixmap->drawable.width;

shmcmd.height = pixmap->drawable.height;

num_mfn is computed by using the starting address, adding the amount of data
the window occupies to find the ending address, and subtracting the two. There
are a few extra things to align the address to 4K pages. In the error log
below, the width and height that are part of the MSG_MFNDUMP are 1280x1024.
Yet, somehow num_mfn is only 0x141. According to the above code and assuming 3
bytes per pixel, it should be something close to (1280x1024x3)/4096 = 0x3c0.
Even if the size was 164x164, num_mfn should be close to (164x164x3)/4096 =
0x19. Somehow the dom0 receives a width and height of 1280x1024 yet it also
receives from the domU that num_mfn = 0x141.

Looking at the code for computing num_mfn, the only thing I can think of that
might affect num_mfn being too small is truncation error from doing pointer
arithmetic using "long." There could be 64 bit addresses but only 32 bit longs
and some higher order bits are being lost when computing num_mfn. Maybe
something like "ptrdiff_t" or "uint64_t" could have been used. That being
said, it shouldn't matter because everything was compiled for 64 bit machines,
right?

Any help figuring out what's going on here would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [qubes-users] How to install clean template?

2016-06-22 Thread james . e . ward
Andrew,

I have a different problem. I've cloned fedora-23 and I need to install a bunch
of software from my employer over their VPN using a script that does
"dnf install http://site.on.vpn/employer.rpm;

I've managed to get the VPN up and running in the template, but the dnf
installs are timing out. wgets also time out. Any ideas?

I have no problem installing software in a VM based on the template, but I need
the software installed in the template the VM is based on so I don't have to
reinstall it every reboot.

Thanks in advance,

James

[qubes-users] How do I install packages to a template over a VPN?

2016-06-22 Thread james . e . ward
My employer supports Fedora as a workstation OS, but it requires a lot of
software be applied and that software must be obtained over their VPN.

What I have tried:
1. clone fedora-23 to OCfedora-23
2. download two VPN rpms from a VM and copy them over to the OCfedora-23
template
3. install and configure VPN on the OCfedora-23 template

Now this all works great. I can connect to the work VPN on the template, but I
am unable to install my employer's software onto the template. Bear in mind, I
can install the same software into a VM based off the template, but would have
to reinstall/reregister the VM (with my employer) on every boot.

I set up the VPN in a proxy VM and run qubes-setup-dnat-to-ns and directed the
template to use that to no avail.

Software install times out on dnf install from an http://site.on.the.vpn. I
tried a wget and it also times out. There's something different about a
template that prevents this as the same installation script works fine on a VM
based on the same template. Can someone tell me what this is?

Thanks in advance,

James
