The Thursday before, SNOWPOCALYPSE descended upon the PNW and the ride was cancelled. I had just received a few bike related trades in the mail that week and was eager to take them out. The jewel of the trades was an Acorn Boxy Rando bag which fit perfectly on my M-12 I had installed a few weeks previous. By 12:00 the sun had come out and most of the snow was gone. I was moping about in my robe and PJs (if you have never seen a 6'6 guy in full length PJs...) wearily getting some work done when my wife came in and forced me to get out while my son was still sleeping. A few minutes later I was enjoying myself on the Burke avoiding pedestrians and snow patches. It was amazing. I forgot my gloves and I don't own winter gloves anyway so I decided to stop at Recycled Cycles to see if I could find a cheap pair. A crow cawed as I dismounted my bike. I leaned it against the bike rack and opened my new bag to retrieve my mini u-lock. I felt so wonderful and smug showing off the new bag. Front bags are so civilized and what-not. But then something wet and squishy landed my hand, on my bag, and right in the front pocket. Was it snow? Dirt? The crow was right above me. It had pooped in my brand new bag the very first time I had opened it in public. I went in and asked for a paper towel and had it cleaned up pretty quickly. The buzz from riding for the first time in a week or more couldn't be faded. Besides: in Italy birds pooping on your head is considered good luck right? [RBW] 57cm Raleigh International, Brooks Grips and Extras for sale
So my wife has finally worn me down and convinced me to sell one of my many projects to fund a new purchase. For grabs is a 57cm Raleigh international, reynolds 531, just repainted locally in Champagne Gold Metallic, period decals from velocals buried in the clear coat. Chrome looks good, not perfect though but no pitting or rusting or anything like that. Bike has one small nick where too long crankbolt nipped it before I realized what was wrong. Standard english BB. Measurements- seat tube 57cm c-c, top tube 56cm c-c. Rear triangle was spread locally (at a reputable bike shop, not by me) to 132.5 to acomodate modern wheels. Dropouts were re-aligned with the appropriate park tool. Bike will take 38mm ties with no fenders and 28s with 43mm honjos. Will include the honjos and the long reach gran compe brakes in the sale. Bike was setup for 700c with those brakes and worked great. Repaint was $250 and that is what I am looking to sell for since I know that I will never get back what I put into it. Bike rides really nice but max weight on it should be no more than about 200lbs so with my fat ass will never work for he sport tourer I was looking to build. I have the matching campagnolo BB and 172.5 mm Strada crankset (52 45 rings) along with the campagnolo pedals that came with bicycle before I restored it that I can include at a negotiable price. All have been cleaned, pedals and headset repacked with fresh park grease. Can also sell those seperaratly if the buyer of the frame doesnt want them. Again looking for $250 plus 50 for shipping, if your cost is less I will refund but I will eat anything over 50, you can also come pick it up locally. Also have brooks grips for sale, honey, removed 2 rings to make them a bit smaller, already treated with proofide. These will NOT take bar ends, something I wish I knew when I bought them, haha, was thinking 40 bucks shipped. Link to flikr page with pics of all the items http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?saved=1 , and link to ebay page where I had the whole bike for sale so you can see it built up http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=230670744012ssPageName=ADME:L:EOISFP:US:1123 . [RBW] Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?
Hi, Folks, I am an old guy (almost 64) and just finished my second year of cycling. I put in 4200 miles last year on a carbon frame bike which I like, but I'm looking around for something more comfortable for longer rides and light touring. I ran across the Rivendells a couple of months ago. I like what I'm reading and I'm esp interested in the Sam Hillborne and San Marcos. Do you Riv owners consider the San Marcos a true Rivendell? Can I expect the same quality ride, etc. from the San Marcos as I would the other Riv bikes? (I'm asking because it doesn't bear the Riv name.) [RBW] Re: Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?
As far as I know Grant Petersen designed every aspect of it, so it should have similar ride quality to a Hillborne. It's just a slightly lighter, more road oriented version that takes smaller tires. You can get them directly from Rivendell or from Soma but they'd probably build them with different parts if you bought it complete. -Matt -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?
It doesn't matter if it's a true Rivendell. Grant designed it, apparently without compromise, so I assume it will be similar in ride quality to other bikes Grant designed in recent years. I assume the fit will be similar to that of the Hillborne, but probably faster, more sprightly handling. You probably won't be able to find one to test ride unfortunately, but maybe you could find the more common Hillborne to try. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Bay Area Travel/Biking - any place
I concur, great thread, especially as I too am headed to the Bay Area, though it'll be the second week of May. First I'm off to Oregon to visit some family members and ride the Oregon coast with a friend. I discovered that it would only add about $100 to my ticket (Hawaii-Portland) to add San Francisco on the way home. I'll be in SF from 5/7-5/12 though 5/7 and 5/12 are really travel days. My travel bike is Bike Friday NWT which works great as luggage from Hawaii (shipping bikes back and forth all the time would be just too expensive). The Friday has been to Riv central before; 2009 when I bought my Quickbeam. This time I'll be trying to figure out which geared bike I can't live without...being a big fella I'm thinking Bomba or Hunq - though to be honest I've not had a lick of trouble (knock on wood) with the QB so others are possible too. I'm staying within a block of a BART station so I'll be able to get most anywhere in good order. I'm pretty pleased about being able to come through the area and stay for a change. I always seem to be making connecting flights in SF and every time I do I wish I had more than an hour in the airport - this time I do. Aloha! [RBW] Re: FS: Super inexpensive Sugino crankset
OK, lots of views to this post and to my flickr photos, but no nibbles. I get the message that nobody wants these. I've officially taken them off the market. They are no longer available for sale. The reason they are no longer available for sale is that I have decided that this will be my first experiment with aluminum polishing. I worked on the left crank arm last night with Easy Off for 2 minutes and then about 20 minutes of sanding with 600 grit wet/dry. There are a couple of deeper scratches, so I might spot sand with 500 or 400 to get at those, and then escalate through 600/1000/1200 and then hit it with Simichrome. If anyone is interested in that progress, I've posted a few shots on my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/72157629029341885/with/6761545249/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Every Day Carry - Here's Mine, What's Yours?
Amit, I agree this is a cool and interesting topic, but also one that makes me a little apprehensive, since I already spend way too much time thinking about bikes in the manner of a connoisseur rather than just a rider, and if my interests expand to other EDC-type things like cameras, knives, flashlights, multi-tools, watches, pens, etc., I am really going to be in trouble in terms of doing any actual work. That said, toys and tools are fun and useful, and all work and no play made Jack the dull boy, so I hope this thread will grow. I suppose the way to go is, just like with bikes, to do some research up front and establish a good EDC kit made up of quality gear, and then be content with it and resist the urge to constantly upgrade. The challenge is to admire and not covet. How do you like your Canon S100? I just got a S95 on sale before Christmas and of course the photos I have taken with it completely blow away the ones I was taking with my cell phone before. I also get a fair amount of use out of my Opinel knife, which I purchased after a discussion on the iBOB list a few months ago. I agree that it meets the definition of BOBish. I maintain, however, that a tamahagane wakizashi would be just as useful and far more dashing, and I may yet switch to that for my EDC blade. - David G, Madison WI On Wed, Jan 25, 2012 at 11:18 AM, Amit Singh asd...@gmail.com wrote: I'm reposting this with hopes of greater response because it's a cool and interesting topic. Re: [RBW] Every Day Carry - Here's Mine, What's Yours?
Every day depends on when we're talking during the day. The workday EDC is radically different than my non-work EDC- and are contained in different packaging. My non-work EDC is a frame pump, spare tube, a patch kit, a Park tire boot, tire levers, a Ritchey multi tool, Presta to Schrader adapter and a spoke wrench. Ecept for the pump and the tube, all of that fits inside an Altoids tin, based on tool kit B on this page: http://pardo.net/bike/pic/fail-003/000.html On one bike add a Leatherman Squirt tool which is in the bar bag; on another I have a little Swiss Army folding pliers that still fits inside the Altoids tin with a Park CPR-9. I usually take my cell phone in a pocket, but I take that pretty much everywhere anyway. I use these for rides from around the block to 400 km. For brevets and PBP I added one of those folding emergency spokes and taped a few extra spokes to fender stays and, IIRC, took a spare brake and derailleur cable. My personal proclivity for EDC is towards minimalism. I hate being loaded down with a lot of baggage. A well-maintained bike does not need an extensive tool kit on the bike IMHO (although the kits above will cover the majority of repairs short of a bottom bracket replacement or headset replacement). I also like my bikes to weigh about 20 lbs or less (which is the case for 3 of my 4 bikes) which may sum up my stance on this topic. I know people who carry 3-4 spare tubes, chain links, big wrenches, spare parts like brake pads and cables, 4-5 snacks, etc. My wife almost always takes a U-lock. Whatever gives you the best chance of having a fun ride is OK by me, even if it's stuff I wouldn't haul around. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?
You could call RBW, since they sell it and ask for the honest skinny on the bike. I wouldn't hesitate to get one, if I was in the market for another road bike. You probably won't be able to find one to test ride unfortunately, but maybe you could find the more common Hillborne to try. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012
Shuttle Update: Good news... Wilderness Voyageurs (WV) provided me with what I consider a very reasonable rate for 2 vans (to shuttle approx 25 passengers plus bikes and gear). They have a large rack on top of one van, and a box trailer for the balance of the bikes and gear. The price quote is $415, which translates to roughly $17 per person (if we have 25), or $28 per person (if we have 15), etc... you get the idea. We pay for the vans and trailer, regardless of the number of people. Either way I think that's a very reasonable price (compared to other quotes for large buses). I would like to propose leaving our cars in Cumberland (or optionally Frostburg) and getting shuttled back on Sunday (I will explain why in a moment). WV is located in Ohiopyle. PA just off the trail. As we pass through Ohiopyle on Sunday (Apr 22), we CAN opt to use WV to shuttle us up to Fallingwater, IF folks would like to take a tour. The cost would be $25 per van (from WV HQ), which adds only $2 per person. I have sent in an inquiry to the Fallingwater people requesting a group tour rate (normally $22 individually). We'll see if they can accommodate a group of 25 for the Noon time slot; THEN it's up to us to decide whether we'd like to include this tour or not. Another option would be to have a nice, relaxing lunch in Ohiopyle. I'd like your thoughts, please. Next up will be a decision on lodging and shuttle options. The WV folks made a pretty good case for leaving our cars in Cumberland MD, citing better parking options, and actually by leaving cars in Cumberland, another advantage would be to allow late arrivals on Friday night (or even Saturday morning), by not having to pre-shuttle at a predetermined time. Moreover, we can check in with WV at Ohiopyle on Sunday, and provide a pretty accurate time estimate for when we'll need pickup in Connellsville, which is 17 miles down river. The disadvantage to this is that it tacks on additional time and distance for our friends coming from the North. But Sunday will be a shorter day, and I'd anticipate arriving in Connellsville around 3, putting us back in Cumberland by around 5 PM. For those who would prefer to start in Frostburg (which is 16 miles up trail from Cumberland), this would give you a later start on Sat AM (while you wait for the rally to catch up) and it would spare you 16 miles of additional climbing (albeit at a gradual 1% grade or less). I'm sure we can convince the WV crew to drop people in Frostburg on the way back into Cumberland on Sunday, but they may tack on a small surcharge. Another option for those wishing to start from Frostburg on Saturday would be to arrive in Cumberland during the day on Friday, leaving your car in Cumberland, then riding 16 miles to Frostburg up the climb to a hotel in Frostburg... then you can sleep in on Sat while the rest of us huff and puff our way up to meet you. Finally, for lodging options in Confluence, I would strongly recommend reserving the Paddlers Lane Retreat guest house, which can accommodate at least a dozen, and costs about $425 a night (which is a bargain if we fill it). Here's a link to their site - http://www.paddlerslane.com/id9.html. There are other BB accommodations that folks can make on their own, with prices and quality of accommodations varying; Here's the link to Google maps that lists and shows where these lodging choices are: http://tinyurl.com/6wj6bgq You can decide. SO WHAT I AM ASKING FROM THOSE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING RIV RALLY EAST 2012 INCLUDES: - As soon as possible, a verbal commitment to attend (and I may request a deposit for the shuttle and lodging (if I book the Paddlers Guest House). - A lodging preference, either: A. I would like to stay with the masses in the Paddlers Lane Guest House (if avail), and although I am guaranteed a bed, it may not be a queen bed, we'll draw straws... or B. I would like to make my own lodging arrangements. - Preferred starting point; Cumberland, MD (62 miles to Confluence on Day 1, approx the first 25 miles are gradual uphill) vs Frostburg, MD (47 miles to Confluence on Day 1, approx the first 10 miles are gradual uphill). And for those preferring Frostburg, do you need to A. Park in Frostburg or B. Park in Cumberland and ride to Frostburg ahead of the Rally. - A (Yes/No) vote on a Fallingwater tour - Assuming we shuttle via bus, and take a Noon tour... Figure 1-2 hours total, and will cost approx $20 per person. Thanks, this information will greatly help me plan the logistics. Later this evening I will provide a list of available hotel choices for Cumberland and Frostburg, which folks can opt to stay at Friday evening, or choose a hotel outside of the area, your choice, and you can make those arrangements on your own. Re: [RBW] Extreme Exercize
I quit racing in '92-having to pay to wait around all day just sucked. But I like training , I like competing against self in a strictly selfish way. I do send my times to people, but only because they've asked me to. I've been shocked at how many elite triathletes end up with pacemakers and assorted other ailments related to the heart. But it takes really sick efforts to make one, well, really sick. In between we have Randonneuring. Which is nothing more than racing when you come down to it. I love Jan Heine, and am inspired by his travels. But if/when I ever ride across France, it ain't gonna be at night. If I climb the Tourmalet, it's gonna be in bright sunshine, not just a check on a list as part of some private-parts measurement story for my friends. Cyclotouring to me, and as it applies to this group, seems to strike the right balance. Travel, good health, good scenery, good food, hopefully shared with like-minded good people. I 'm not against the extremes, but as a way of lifeI don't get it. I have an ongoing dialogue with Jill Homer on this very topic. Sorry to ramble, but I think about it quite a bit. Littleton No. 50 Phone Wallet - Keys carried on ML Brown Braided Keychain - Shure E4 Earbuds - Lamy Fountain Pen - Moleskin Notebook (set up as GSD) - Swatch GB743 - Canon S100 Camera - Surefire G2x Tactical Flashlight I like how all this stuff is compact so it fits well inside of a small trunk sack. When I'm not on the bike it's generally carried in a pocket on my briefcase, and when that doesn't happen I can carry it all on my person in various pockets, although I'm tempted to start carrying a man-bag or a m-urse. This is a 'heavy load', but it's everything which I need to flip between work and adventure. Works for me. I'd be interested in seeing your EDC's. http://everyday-carry.com/isa neat website that shows lots of carries. [RBW] Re: Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?
For what its worth I was fortunate enough to visit Rivendell HQ a year ago and got to ride a Sam and a San Marcos back to back and in both cases I came back from my test spin with a big goofy grin on my face, I think the real question is how are you planning to ride your bike? let that determine your choice of Sam or San Marcos. They are both great bikes. Ryan On Jan 24, 2:52 pm, Pat revfirstsh...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Folks, I am an old guy (almost 64) and just finished my second year of cycling. (I'm asking because it doesn't bear the Riv name.) [RBW] Re: Extreme Exercize
On Jan 25, 6:06 pm, robert zeidler I love Jan Heine, and am inspired by his travels. But if/when I ever ride across France, it ain't gonna be at night. If I climb the Tourmalet, it's gonna be in bright sunshine, A friend teaches a basic cycling course, and one of his lessons is If you're not having fun, you're doing something wrong. Jan seemed to have a lot of fun on that Pyrennes ride he wrote about, but recall that there were references about times where his inner cyclotourist and his randonneur argued, one wanting to explore the other wanting to make time. Not an uncommon tension for any cyclist. I'm always glad to read stories by people who've done exceptional rides like that. But I'm with Robert on doing scenic rides when you can see something. And take photos. dougP On Jan 25, 6:06 pm, robert zeidler zeidler.rob...@gmail.com wrote: I quit racing in '92-having to pay to wait around all day just sucked. [RBW] Re: Every Day Carry - Here's Mine, What's Yours?
In my pockets: Keys (work, car, mailbox, roofrack, a key for each of two bikes' locks). Swiss Army officer (there are three tools for opening alcohol) knife that I found digging a hole on the beach when I was 5. USB stick. Wallet. a randl my sister-in-law bought me (Etsy?). She's seriously the best gift-buyer I've ever known. My son is a close second. Change. I like having change in my pocket. It's atavistic and OCO, but I like giving cashiers $15.12, and getting a single nickel back. (often) Sony Nex camera with an Exakta-mount Zeiss 58mm lens. On the bike: One less thing than I need at the moment. I do now have toolkits, pumps, gloves, and hats on both my commuting bikes, and a blinky clipped to every bike in the house. I also carry a L2D flashlight along with my house/car keys on a ring my Dad used with his 'dog tag' attached ( I do this to help me remember him) I also carry my wallet (with cash) and cheezy Walmart Straight Talk phone. Nothing else.unless you are talking when on the bicycle then it changes with the season. Rarely do I carry a camera as I did that professionally for 20 plus years but the new digi stuff intrigues me, especially the action cameras which I intend to acquire for my cycling adventures. I used to pack a 1911 .45 automatic pistol for about 15 years also but it got heavy and it threw out my spine alignment. I carry more junk in the auto than most people (tools, extra clothing, water and car related stuff.) On the bike for extended trips (over ten miles) Like when I am commuting I carry extra socks, raingear, glasses, food, work clothing etc. Daily stuff. I'm pretty much a minimalist. [RBW] Re: Bay Area Travel/Biking - any place
One last suggestion- if you're going to be in western Sonoma Co., you mustn't miss the Bakery Bike Challenge. A ride among bucolic hills and wonderful little bakeries where you can try many a treat with the clearest of consciences (if not clearest of arteries). My friends and I would begin at Occidental at The Union Hotel bakery for starters then N onto Coleman Valley Rd (a bit of climb) L to Joy Rd R to Bodega Hwy L to 1 heading S Valley Ford to Middle to Tomales (Tomales Bakery- their savories sell out pretty quickly as I recall) Then back up: Highway 1 to valley ford, then Valley Ford-Freestone (not to miss: Wildflour Bakery) Then the Bohemian highway back to Occidental. All county and state roads- really wonderfully pleasant. On Jan 25, 10:03 am, Robert F. Harrison rfharri...@gmail.com wrote: I concur, great thread, especially as I too am headed to the Bay Area, though it'll be the second week of May. Aloha! Beyond that, I'll take either CalTrain or BART to get back to the SouthBay and maybe try to get to Riv HQ or Jintesha Studio in Berkeley (my college stomping grounds).
