Make sure you get the cassette lockring if you find a hub. They are hub-specific and not cheap. Sounds like an epic trip. I wish I could ride in snow. On Mar 20, 5:49 pm, Brian Hanson stone...@gmail.com wrote: I bailed on the Brewpub Populaire in Oregon to do my first 200k this past Saturday in Bellingham, WA. It was definitely an experience! I rode in snow, freezing rain, plenty of wind, and ultimately sunshine through some pretty country on a relatively flat course (for this area). No bonking or mechanicals made this one a win. I rode my '09 AHH kitted out in rando garb with Acorn bags front and rear. Not too heavy on the packing - mostly liquid food, and a spare wool top, bottom, hat, and gloves. The only thing I used were the extra gloves as my original winter gloves were soaked within the first few hours. I changed when the rain stopped, and my summer gloves kept my hands warm at that point. I ended up doing the ride mostly alone as there was nobody willing to go as slow as me :) I felt a real sense of accomplishment at the end, it being my longest ride ever. On Saturday, March 17, 2012 10:53:05 AM UTC-6, Frank wrote: For more than a decade, every day, I’ve used Pine Tar Soap as shampoo, body cleanser, and shaving cream. For some reason just this morning, this reality struck me as somewhat remarkable, and so here I will. I don’t buy or use any other products for the general touch-up of my physical exterior. I have all of my hair at fifty (in fact, perhaps more than I’d like on top), little to no discernible gray, no dandruff, no skin troubles, no funny smells, and most importantly, no hassle. While I can’t attribute this, from my perspective, generally desirable condition to the soap directly, I can look at my only (younger) brother and rationally conclude that I am either comparatively fortunate, or that the soap helps. My routine is pretty simple. Water on, close eyes, lather hair, face, and other bits all at once, find razor, shave, and rinse. When Bar Now is nearly reduced to a sliver, it gets set atop Bar Next, where it anneals, continuing the cycle. I cannot think of a single other thing in my life from which I’ve derived such sustainable utility, ease of use, and value. For what it’s worth, I work in technology, spend a great deal of time “down in the valley” and (as we say in Seattle) “up on the mountain” in the company of corporate directors, BOD members, venture capitalists, partner senior executives, and every day I work in lockstep with DevOps staff. I like to think about stuff, but I’m by no means bohemian. I guess the point there is that my program seems to dovetail just fine with the rest of society, and no one’s the wiser. Perhaps the best news is that my kids, two boys eight and eleven, are on the same program, and to them it’s a good thing. I feel as if with the help of Rivendell, I’ve AXE-proofed my home, and that’s worth a lot. I came prepared for 100k of riding in a downpour. Instead I should have wore sunscreen. No bonk or nutrition/cramp issues... I believe largely thanks to tips from the list. My goal was to finish in 6 hours (a little over 10mph average) and I got my card signed at 5:55. [RBW] Commuting home on the Saluki raises bike etiquette question!
Hi Riv Chicas y Chicos, Here's one to throw in the hopper! Yesterday on my commute home, I was stopped close to the right curb at a light for a busy cross-street (Hiawatha Ave at 35th st in Minneapolis for you twin cities folk). I heard a horn behind me; not a blaring one, just a can-I-get-your-attention one. I turned around to look, and a bit behind me was a man on a bike who was square in the middle of the right lane. Behind him was a woman in the car from whence the beep came. She asked in a very reasonable tone if he could move over so she could make a right turn. He replied no; the light was about to change. Then there ensued a brief but escalating argument while the light didn't turn green with the biker vocally refusing to move over and the frustrated woman asking why he wouldn't just move over. I refrained from turning around and watching the whole thing much less getting involved. The light finally turned green. I, out in front, sprinted across Hiawatha with the argument still going. The last I heard was the man shouting over his shoulder in a sarcastic tone: I'm sorry I made you wait 40 seconds. Curious to know what y'all think...would you have moved over? stood your ground? In similar instances that I've been in, I know that I've moved over and didn't think much about it. The trees are leafing out here a full month early. Re: [RBW] Commuting home on the Saluki raises bike etiquette question!
Hmm, I often encount situations like this riding in NYC. The difference is that though I know what the laws are and the drivers dont I am still a dude on a 30lb bike and they are driving a 2 ton missle that can crush me like a bug. I will usually err on the side of courteousness even though I will grumble under my breath about how I had the right of way or when some idiot honks at me for just having the audacity to rid on thier roads but again, they can kill us and we cant do much to them. I find this is especially true in NYC where the Village Voice has finally torn the lid off of a systematic plan by the NYPD to blame all bike related injuries and fatalities on bike riders and hardly ever if at all on the drivers of cars since the NYPD is not in favor of increased ridership advocated by the transportation commissioner Sadik-Khan. So I would say, there is a time to stand your ground and a time to realize you are at the position of vulnerability and to just complain when you get home or on this list even. I know there are people who will see this as being too capitulating but as a grown man with kids at home I have to prioritize safety over pride. This is a pet peeve and concern of mine. First, the woman is an idiot, as usual thinking that bikes don't belong, really, on the roadways. Second, if you pull to the far right, you risk a fool making a right hook just as you are moving off -- the one time I have been hit by a car it was in such a situation. When people honk at me in such circumstances, I point to the red light. BUT!!! There is a way!! I, myself, pull out to the left side of the lane at a red or sigh. This has two benefits: first, I prevent fools from making tight right hooks around me. Second, it allows cars to make rights without me getting in the way. Same - but it depends on the intersection. I tend to try to leave space to my right for a turning vehicle (or bike) if I'm heading straight. I would guess that it only has a couple thousand miles on it at most. I would rate the overall condition as good due to several paint scratches (mostly out of the way) and one small dent in the top tube (still not sure when that occured). The downtube decals are starting to peel but I have new replacements that I just received. It will not come with a saddle or pedals. Great report, Brian - I enjoyed reading that. 200K would be plenty for me, and you're NOT a slow rider. I just think most of those guys are FAST. Riding a 200K this time of year, in this weather, is really for the hard core riders anyway. I bet there are a greater number of medium (us), and slow riders in the summer. Have you done STP? Boy, that's a complete cross-section of riders. I've done it twice, and think I've seen just about everything. No desire to do it again, unless my sons really want to do it when they are teenagers. Keep telling us about your rando adventures. I'm interested, but not sure I'll commit just yet. I'm definitely game for a populaire (especially a pub crawl), and could probably swing a 200K in the summer. Anything longer will have to wait until the kids are grown. Mark Abele at Rivendell Bicycle Works (RBW) suggested this googlegroup as a good place to start, so you get the first shot. According Abele (RBW), the frameset was a custom-built in 2003 by Curt Goodrich in the all-rounder style (which is similar to an Atlantis). It features a custom paint job: a beautiful forest-green and cream combination. Frame size: 22.5 inches [maybe a shade less] or 57.15 centimeters (center of crank to where the seat post inserts) Standing height: 32.5 inches or 82.55 centimeters (floor to top of top tube near the center laterally) The parts are on the expensive side (for 2005): Crankset: Sugino XD2 with Phil Wood bottom brackets Brakes: Paul Touring and Neo-Retro cantilevers Break Leavers: Cane Creek SCR-5C Leavers Stem and Bars: Nitto lugged stem with Noodle bar Shifters: Shimano Bar End Shifters Post and Saddle: Brooks B-17 Champion Special with Nitto Frog post Bag: Baggins Banana Bag (full of tools, tubes, and such) Wheels: Phil Wood Hubs with Velocity Synergy rims and Panaracer Paseala tires Cages: Nitto 80th Anniversary cages Fenders: SKS P45's Bicycle Stands: Rothko Rolling Bicycle Stands (pair) On-board Tire Pump: Zefal hpx4 Bell: Brass bell Abele says: Overall a super-nice bike. Purchased new, that would sell for around $5K is my guess. History: As I mentioned (above), the frameset was a custom-built in 2003. It was returned by the original customer because the spacing between the canti brake bosses were not to his spec. RBW resold the frameset, outfitted with all the parts (above), to a neighbor of mine in 2005. He, it seems, loved the dream of the bike more than actually having and riding the bike, my guess is that he rode the bike about 10 miles or less (yes, I'm serious). I acquired the bike in 2007 or 08 when he was going through a domestic brake-up. I, in turn, had great plans to ride, but back surgery and prostate cancer informed me otherwise. I rode it one afternoon at the former Alameda Navel Air Base. Since that time, it's been hanging from the collar ties in my painting studio. In short, during it's life, this bike has hardly been used. And quite frankly, I enjoy just looking at it, but it's time to pass it along to someone who will love and ride it as intended. Asking price: $3,200 (I don't want to dicker really, but I will entertain any serious offer.) Mmmm... based on what you related, I'd have to fault the grumpy cyclist. Since we can turn right on red lights (generally) here in CA, any time I'm stuck at a stop light, I'll attempt to favor the left side of the lane (assuming I'm in the rightmost lane). It's just seemed to be the appropriately polite action for my fellow road users. I've even lifted the bike up and moved further left if a larger vehicle is behind me with their blinker on. I just tend to try to do those things which don't get me run over. For example, there are actually a number of places in my commuting/riding area where the prevailing traffic flow turns right in certain areas - for example a three lane section where 99% of the center lane traffic is turning right to access a freeway onramp. When there I'll actively move to the leftmost lane if I get caught by the red light. I dunno - just the way I'm wired - I just figure that I'm an ambassador when out on the roadway. You don't have to (and arguably shouldn't) be passive in traffic. [RBW] FS: Baggins Bags, B67, etc
Hey RBWs, Doing some spring cleaning and I've got a few things for sale that might be of some interest here: 1) Rivendell Baggins Adam saddlebag - $125 shipped CONUS Classic Baggins bag, in good shape but plenty of beusage. I bought this used and fairly quickly determined that it was about the same capacity as my Paladin bag which I slightly prefer. So time to pass it along. It didn't come with the 2 front leather straps and I never replaced them so those won't be included. The straps for the seat post and saddle are all present. Acorn sells leather straps that look like they'd work. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/bagginsadam/ 2) Rivendell Baggins Candybar bag - $50 shipped CONUS Another classic baggins bag, again well used but in good shape. The leather Baggins logo has a discolored line on it but I think with some leather polish it'd go away (that is to say none of the embossing is worn off). Original leather stapes are present. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/bagginscandybarbag/ 3) Arkel Laptop briefcase - $75 shipped CONUS This was the original Arkel laptop briefcase which uses their older (but still very effective) mounting hardware. I always used a raincover with this bag and thus it is in very good shape. It includes a raincover which is. much more worn looking but still repelling moisture just fine. This is the best laptop carrying bag out there, with an internal, suspended waterproof sleeve that your laptop slides into (and can be removed - I'd often take this with me when doing non-bicycle traveling). Sleeve fits typical 15 laptops, I used it with two Apple laptops a 15 Titanium Powerbook and an 15 Alumininum MacBook Pro. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/arkellaptopbriefcase/ 4) A Brooks b.67 - $50 shipped CONUS Honey brown color. This sprung saddle is nicely broken in but has years if not decades of life left in it. I bought this around 2005 I think and the leather seems a lot thicker then the most recent Brooks I bought. A great saddle but a little wide for my sit bones so I eventually switched to a b.17. I kept it proofhided (but not overly so) and used a cover in the rain, so it's in great shape.. Pictures can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35237104136@N01/tags/brooksb67/ All prices include shipping. Feel free to make offers. I'd also be willing to include any of these items in trade for a set of the old Baggins Pa Panniers in any sort of non-ripped condition. Now that I think about why this hasnt happened to me, we dont have any right turn on red here in NYC so really not an issue. Of course when I am going straight and see the guy next to me is turning I will eithe cheat up past his bumper so I can clear the intersection before he turns or hang back and wait for him to to turn if he seems aggressive or I cant get up into the intersection before him. [RBW] Re: Commuting home on the Saluki raises bike etiquette question!
From the original description it sounded like both the bikes were in a right turn lane and neither one of them actually turned right. I think that's a no-no. To clarify: There were two west-bound lanes, and the right-most lane was/is not a dedicated turn lane, so the bikes were not doing a no-no by proceeding straight. Also, it's legal to do a right-on-red in Minnesota unless otherwise posted, and this light isn't posted no-turn- on-red. -liesl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Commuting home on the Saluki raises bike etiquette question!
Like the others, I would certainly not move to the right of right-turning cars if I were planning to turn right. Nor would I wait on the right edge of the road in a situation where I expected right-turning cars. That is a recipe for being Right Hooked. When I'm waiting at a light, I will move left to allow cars to turn right on my righthand side, and motorists often do make a right turn from my right side. I often find myself more or less straddling the lane line between the right-turn lane and the straight-through lane at less-busy intersections, although at a busy intersection I'm more likely to just take the rightmost straight-through lane, which in many cases is also the lane right-turning cars would be in. If I can't find a safe place that will allow me to be to the left of right-turning cars, well, they'll just have to wait. I was there first. I loathe honking drivers and idiot drivers who go around to my left to turn right. In my opinion, cyclists should not encourage such imbeciles. In that case, I would move left if possible. If not-- what would that driver do if a car were ahead of her, waiting for the light? She would wait for the light. And that's what she should do if the cyclists can't safely allow her to pass on their right. And she should shut up. [RBW] Post-winter tune-up/clean-up/maintenance advice sought.
So I just went through my first winter of Riv ownership in New England. For those of you that don't know, we had a very very mild winter and are currently experiencing a crazy hot spell. I think that winter is pretty much done (I have never seen anything like this, very weird stuff). I can see it getting cold again for a bit, but not turning to winter again. We shall see I guess. At any rate, I had studded tires on the bike and rode most of the winter. I haven't done anything other than cleaning and lubing the chain and the occasional wipe down. What kind of tune up do you guys do before the long biking season begins? My bike was new to me in August or so, I am guessing I don't have cables to replace or anything like that, but just wondering what you do to maintain/start the new season. [RBW] Re: Post-winter tune-up/clean-up/maintenance advice sought.
After a bunch of wet riding, a good wipe down of the black grime off the rims and scrub the brakepads could be good. That black filth grinds away brakepads and eventually even rim side walls. Do you know how to check your chain for stretch? Some people just swap out their chain every 2000 miles (or some other convenient interval). [RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis
Tom, I've got Campagnolo setups on my Rambouillet and my Ritchey racing bike, and like it, but it's not all that Riv-ish. The best reason to use Campy (my opinion only) is to use Ergolevers, if you really want integrated levers. I like the 9-speed stuff a lot and have adapted 10-speed levers to 9-speed cassettes with a Shiftmate pulley. Campy has not appealed to me in recent years -- 11-speed, discontinuing their nice silver Centaur, Chorus and Record hubs, and the astronomical prices. I've adapted Ergolevers to Shimano drivetrains, using the Shiftmate and/or info from the web, which would be my approach if starting out today. I really like their triple front derailleurs with all non-STI setups. Re: [RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis
Campy sold a 30-40-50 chainring option on their non-Record/Chorus triple cranksets. I like those cranks too, despite the 135 BCD and requirement to use a Campy-compatible square taper bottom bracket. Tough chainrings in the Centaur/Racing T level. Unfortunately Campy turned fully toward the racing/carbon market around 2009, but there's lots of older stuff around and Campy has the Comp triple group in their lineup with that chainring combo if you want to buy new. It continues to amaze me, because Campagnolo has never had the slightest interest in this sort of gearing; but the derailleurs are simply fantastic. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis
Somewhat unorthodox suggestion, but the smoothest shifting drivetrain I've ever owned or even heard about has been the SRAM X.9 2x10 kit recently installed on my Curt Goodrich (formerly I had the same group on a Redline mountain bike). The way the chainrings are ramped on the x.9 crank is a thing of beauty, but forget about swapping out other rings. My crank is a 42/28, but a 39/26 is also available. I have an 11-36 cassette, which makes for a near perfect gear range. You'll probably maybe have to use a non-SRAM front derailleur for tire/fender clearance reasons. Of course the SRAM stuff is all black, smoky gray, or maybe white, which is what makes it unorthodox for a Riv. But if you can get over the color issue, it's awesome. [RBW] Re: Commuting home on the Saluki raises bike etiquette question!
If I were a Riv Chico in this scenario, I would be farther into the road so that lady would have to pass to the right of me to turn. If I were that guy in the scenario, I'd be right next to you, center or left of center. It seems weird to hang behind another cyclist. If I were the lady in the car... I'd respect the cyclist's refusal to move. Arguing when someone refuses my request would expose my politeness as a simple tactic to get my way, not a show of respect for them. Would also suggest checking the chain. I usually replace a chain either during the winter or at the end here in Minnesota. Grit can get in and wreak havoc on the rest of the drivetrain. [RBW] Curiosity is Killing Me
So the new Sam has me wondering, is my bike just too small? I had a long convo with Keven on the clock at work today which was doubly nice and he was trying to bang into my head that my 54 Hilsen is just too small for someone with a 84pbh and who comes in at 250lbs. Having had a 58cm Saluki that just felt too big I thought maybe he was off or that I just feel more comfortable on a smaller frame but notice that I am trying to stretch the frame with a long stem and setback seatpost so maybe he is on to something. I hate to be that guy that jumps from bike to bike but I would love to find one that was just right and I am not sure I am there yet. I love the 650b wheels with the Hetres and would hate to lose that by going up to the 56 Sam or 58 Atlantis or 54 Hunqapillar, although those are all awesome bikes. My question is if I was to shift my Hilsen frame for the 52 Sam is this just a lateral move or would there be a significant difference that I would feel? If anyone has a 56 Hilsen for a straight trade or has any other creative ideas I would be open to hear them. I really do love the unique color of the Hilsen I got from Joe and that it is actually one of the older Salukis (SA 0193) that was badged a Hilsen which also makes it somewhat unique so I would hate to give it up for something that was just a lateral move. [RBW] Re: Curiosity is Killing Me
Your setup doesn't look like the bike is too small. As long as it feels fine, it's fine. I'd think on a 56 Hilsen/Saluki that you'd be running a slightly shorter periscope stem (unless you wanted to extend the reach slightly), but it'd still be high because it looks like you prefer your bars that way. You'd have a bit less standover height. I have the same PBH and a 58 Saluki fit but felt too big. The 56 Sam I test rode felt a little long in the top tube. I remember looking at the 52 Sam and thinking it'd be too small. My 57 Bleriot was just right. I briefly had a 54 Saluki but didn't build it up because I quickly realized it would be too small for me with my preferred reach/ drop. I'm 5'9 or so. Jan raved about the GB hub, so this should work out well. As for lockrings, yes it comes with the cassette. If you want a cheaper alternative to Campy, check out the miche campy compatible cassette, it also comes with a matching lockring.
