[RBW] Weekend Ride in the Cascades

2012-07-09 Thread Brian Hanson
I have been waiting for the opportunity to get the Hunqapillar into the
mountains for a ride. My wife and daughter went to MN to see family, so I
had a few days to get out of dodge. I wanted to do some sort of S24X, but
it was out of the question as I have a dog that isn't one to run alongside
me (first squirrel that shows up starts wild goose chase). I figured I
would drive up to an old favorite haunt of some 10 years ago, and bike
around the area. It seemed like a good time and place to get lost. The
good part is that I would not have to fight the crowds at the campgrounds.
This place is in the back country in the Central Cascades.

The first night was just spent setting up camp, and concluded with a short
bike ride down to discover the old road was overgrown. After breakfast the
next day, I did a 10 mile out and back to a rock formation that was north
of my camp. I had seen goats up there in the past (white specks in
binoculars), and I wasn't really sure I would get all the way up there.
After exploring a few dead-ends, I really started climbing. It was
probably 85, so the shady spots on the ride were nice! There were quite a
few overlooks where I had great views of Mt. Rainier to the south, and the
North/Central Cascades to the north. When I reached the end of the trail,
I figured I was only a short hop to the top, so I left the bike, and
started hoofing it up. I surprised (myself and them) a herd of mountain
goats that were lounging on the rocks. Coolest thing ever - even saw a kid
in the group! The ride back down was a trip! The Marathon Duremes worked
like a champ at hanging on to the gravel roads at 15-30mph, and the
Hunqapillar was smooth as silk. The front is at about 20psi, and the back
at 35ish. The only rough parts were the washboard sections on the main
road. My arms got a workout hanging on. No problems going up-hill with
the balanced load. I've never had the bike try to wander off trail. I may
go back to a triple crank if I do more of these rides. Those Cascade
grades are steep! The 32 front, 36 rear combo got me up the worst of it,
though.

That night, after charging my phone, I realized I had drained my truck
battery. I had accidentally left the lights on. After the initial panic
of being in the middle of nowhere, I called an old friend who was about the
only person in Seattle who knew how to get where I was. I told him to come
up and get me if I didn't call him by 4pm the next night. Sunday morning,
I rode down from my camp to the main road on the alternate route. This
road had really become overgrown in the past 10 years, and was barely
passable on bike. I had to walk 2 sections through alder tunnels that were
growing over the road from both sides. Amazing how quick nature takes
over! The amazing thing was how this bike just barreled through the brush,
though. I took a few branches at speed on upper and lower wheel, and the
bike just blew through with nary a hiccup. Solid!

Within 5 minutes of getting to the road, I flagged down a pickup, explained
my predicament, and asked if they could give me a jump start. Long story
short - they did. Lucky too. This was the only other car I saw on that
road the rest of the day. Yikes!

Re: [RBW] Re: Will a 9-speed Shimano 105 Derailer work with an 8 speed cassette (friction shifting)?

2012-07-09 Thread Steve Palincsar
I wonder if the problem was initially mid-described. Perhaps it's not
slipping at all, perhaps it's what many of us have long called ghost
shifting.

Zack is friction-shifting Hyperglide 9. Hyperglide is designed to let
the chain sit on 2 adjacent sprockets at the same time without
clattering. Indexing can be tuned to make the shift perfectly; with
friction shifting you are dependent on auditory feedback to align the
chain, and it's largely absent.

So what does this mean in practice? My experience friction shifting
Hyperglide 8 was that I'd downshift approaching a light or stop sign,
and thought I was correctly aligned. I'd stop, and when loading up the
drive train on start-up, the bike would upshift with a BANG.

I switched that bike to index shift levers and all is well. I moved the
friction shifters to a bike running Hyperglide 7 and all is well there.
7 is spaced wider, i.e., the sprockets are farther apart from each
other, making it easier to align the chain.

I also discovered something entirely counter-intuitive and counter to
long established old timey practice. In the old days, when you
downshifted you relieved pedal pressure on the drive train. That made
shifting much easier. What I found with Hyperglide is that if you load
the drive train, i.e., put pressure on the pedals, the downshift becomes
snappier and more positive, engaging the next sprocket with a clunk.

Should it cause me a problem?

I have the sugino triple crank, and the standard riv 8 speed cassette 11-32.

The derailer is a Shimano 105. I checked the range of the derailer when I
set it up, it flexes out to the biggest ring on the cassette and is lined
up to the smallest. Derailer hanger is not bent, also checked. Greased
underneath the bottom bracket where the cables go through the cable guide.
Silver shifters are beeswaxed and tightened. No apparent sticky link (i
checked by paying close attention to the chain running through the RD,
  nothing was jumpy/weird).

Slipping occurs under load, probably either in the middle or small
chainring, happens when I stand up and try and crank (i am about 230 lbs).

  Help appreciated.

[RBW] Re: Betties and Sams and paint choices

2012-07-09 Thread JaxandPuzzle
Thanks so much for your kind comments, Pete!

I can't take credit for the red twine - that was Jay's (from RBW) idea :-).
He also dug up the last set of Silver branded brakes for me, as I disliked
the black branding on the Tektro. I wanted something cheery and feminine,
absolutely no black parts - so there are only a couple of tiny black
components, and black tires were definitely not an option for me. This tire
is a very tight fit, but it rides beautifully and looks very nice too.

I had all my lugs filled in red, and paired with cream Grand Bois Hetres,
honey saddle and grips, and hammered honjos. It looks really phenomenal
IMO. I waited more than a year to purchase my Betty and would have been
disappointed had they changed the color. Blue is evidently a great seller
for Riv. If your wife prefers another color, get a custom color! It's
already a very expensive bike, it may as well be the color she prefers.

Here are a few shots of my Betty, which I think looks different from most
even though it's the same color:

My fiance and I are planning to purchase Bromptons this fall, and I think
I might go with the Turkish green to match Betty. My next bike after that
 will probably be orange :-)

paint job. True, there is Ives Gomez, but he sports the same IMHO
 tasteless gold decals.

This seems even stranger because of the perceived notion that color
has a much larger influence in women's bike buying decisions. Lest I
be accused of prejudice, my own wife and several female friends have
confirmed this (I know, small sample size).

Why do I care? I have been wanting to buy my wife a Betty Foy for a
while, and she actually wants one, but she pretty much hates the
color, nor does she like black and gold. Upon asking her what color
she DOES like, she can't actually give an answer beyond I'd have to
look at a bunch of bikes. Oh well, at least she knows what she
dislikes, and I am not among them.

Nonetheless, I have a feeling that she is not alone, and that
switching Betty's color every couple of re-orders would increase
sales, as it would increase the color choices over time, and might
also lead to the-red-ones-are-going-away-get-yours-now-type sales. If
the Betty came in a color my wife liked, and that color was going
away, I would have bought one already.

 Cheers,

Short cage vs long cage has to do with chain wrap capacity, not the largest

Maximum sprocket is a different characteristic.

next day, I did a 10 mile out and back to a rock formation that was north

Solid!

Within 5 minutes of getting to the road, I flagged down a pickup,
explained my predicament, and asked if they could give me a jump start.
Long story short - they did. Lucky too. This was the only other car I
saw on that road the rest of the day. Yikes!

Thanks for the pictures of the BG knobbly tires in the Quickbeam stays. I

I think they'd still work with a little scissor work on the rear tire,
snipping off the side knobs.

And - surprise - they're wider than I first thought. Bruce Gordon Cycles
says they're 43mm, but my calipers show them as 45.3mm wide at widest point
(which is across the shoulder of knobs). The tires ride just fine, and have
room for good fender clearance, but they're too close to my chainstays, not
enough room for a quarter to slip past.

So, I have decided to put them up for sale. *$80* delivered, in same box
as shipped to me by BG. The tires have been ridden - literally - around the
block on smooth pavement. I can take cash or a check, no paypal. Or RBW

Pleased to say that the new Rock 'n Roads fit a QuickBeam with adequate

wide. I have about 1.5 mm clearance on each side, but that will grow when I
add two links to the chain, so the widest part of the tire moves back and
gets centered in the pocket of the chainstay. Still, it might be too
tight for some folks, and I have yet to see if they rub when taking hard
 corners.

They also add 6mm of radius... these are big 'uns!

Re: [RBW] Re: Will a 9-speed Shimano 105 Derailer work with an 8 speed cassette (friction shifting)?

2012-07-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Steve's suggestion here makes sense (for once!). I shift what are, in
effect, 9 speed cogs with Silver bar end shifters and had to learn the
hard way -- ie, by suffering ghost shifts, particularly in one or two
cogs -- before I realized that I had to move the shifter *just* enough
for the ramps and hooks to catch, and then wait until they dragged the
chain onto the next cog; this instead of trying to essentially
overshift and then move the lever back a bit as I am accustomed to do
with non H-G cogs and for wider spaced H-G cogs. Once I learned to be
patient and let the H-G system do its thing, I had no more shifting
problems.

One other thing: I've also found that a newly installed -- and
therefor tight and skipping -- link can elude even careful visual
inspection. I've often had to use my fingers as I rotated the chain
backward to identify a stiff link causing skipping.

(PS: Steve; ptt!! Contact me off list and I'll tell you what
gloriously crude tools and wild method I just used to remove certain
non-essential braze ons from one of my Riv customs!)

On Mon, Jul 9, 2012 at 5:02 AM, Steve Palincsar palin...@his.com wrote:

Silver shifters are beeswaxed and tightened. No apparent sticky link (i

  nothing was jumpy/weird).

Slipping occurs under load, probably either in the middle or small
chainring, happens when I stand up and try and crank (i am about 230 lbs).

[RBW] Shock cord arrangement ideas for the Baggins handlebar bag

2012-07-09 Thread William
I acquired here on the list a handlebar bag setup that I have installed on
my commuter bike. It's a Nitto F-15 front rack (
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/r8.htm ) and it came with a Baggins
handlebar bag made to fit the rack.

The bag has some brass loops and a couple of hooks to keep the lid closed
with a shock cord. The bag, however, came with no shock cord. I have a
bunch of shock cord on hand for repairing tent poles, so, I'm going to go
ahead and invent my own arrangement, but I was curious if anyone can
remember or show me what the original arrangement was supposed to be?

The best clue I could find was this flickr photo:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/9180352@N06/1806202651/

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2327/1806202651_e042ec29ee_n.jpg

The other constraint I have is that the center leather tap thing with the
Baggins logo has no brass ring. My first instinct is to just do two short
runs of cord. Each cord will tie to two loops, and I'll stretch that cord
over one hook. Are there any old photos from old Readers? None of this is
rocket surgery, so please, no extreme efforts.

I'd be surprised if this was a 26 inch Atlantis, but I could be wrong.

[RBW] Re: Shock cord arrangement ideas for the Baggins handlebar bag

2012-07-09 Thread Frank
William,

I do this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pguillam/7538383796/in/photostream

I don't even mess with the flap, though I used to simply run a piece of
elastic tied to the two brass loops, and then hook it over the brass hook
on the tab. The elastic wore out, and it didn't seem necessary, so I never
replaced it. My approach is to simply release the adjustable cord stop, and
once the tension is off, to pull it through the doubled cord. To secure,
reverse the process, and thread the stop through the looped cord, then pull
it tight, using the stop as the latch. Cheap, easy, and I've used it this
way for years with no trouble.

[RBW] Schwinn Paramount P-15 Country Bike

2012-07-09 Thread Jim Cloud
I just added some photos to my Flickr photostream that might interest
those in this group. I converted this bike from a 27 to 700c size,
using the long-reach Tektro R556 brakes to accommodate the smaller
wheel size. This bike makes a nice classic Country Bike, thanks to
those brakes!

The other recent changes made were to fit the bike with wider
handlebars and a suitable stem. I'd used some original Cinelli Giro
d'Italia handlebars and Cinelli 1-A stem for some time, but the narrow
width (38 cm) of the Cinelli bars just felt very constrained. I'd
guess I'd gotten use to the wider bars on my Rivendell Road Standard,
which are the Nitto B-185 type in 44 cm width (basically the same bar
as the current Mark's Bar sold by Riv - although the Mark's Bar is
a lightened type).

The bars that I chose to use are the Nitto B-176 Dream bars, along
with a Nitto Pearl stem that I had available from my stock. I also
decided to switch the derailleur controls from H/B end type to a set
of classic Campagnolo Record downtube control levers.

This is a really nice bike! Here's the photos:

I finally found a 59cm A. Homer Hilsen Frame/Fork/ Headset, so I'm
going to be selling my 61cm Frame/ Fork/ Headset..The bike was bought
from Rivendell in 2010 and basically sat for a year in someone's shop
until I bought it last summer. It's a tad too big for me, but i've
been riding it anyway. I will receive my new to me frame next week, so
the 61 Homer will be sold after that. Not sure what to ask, so I will
hope someone on here will make me offers...There are a few tiny chips
from before I got it, but the paint and frame are beautiful and works
like butter.i am trying to enclose a few pics of
it thanks...pics can be seen at www.flickr.com/people/ssubman/

[RBW] Re: Rivendell MTB sold on EBay

2012-07-09 Thread iamkeith
Thanks, Jim. That's pretty interesting. And not to question the
seller of the mountain bike (who I know is a list member), but the old
Gen 1 catalog excerpts you have posted leads me to think that perhaps
the bike on ebay was actually an early All-Rounder. Here's a link
to a set of photos I just found of a bike that looks suspiciously like
the mountain bike in question, though it's newer. Some nice pics
here, which is I guess what we were looking for:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drboxer/sets/72157616020239173/

If the ebay bike was indeed an all-rounder, that would mean it had a
lower bottom bracket and steeper head tube, based on this Gen 1
catalog. The good news (for me), if that's the case, is that I'm
probably lucky I didn't win the auction. I have a 55cm XO-1 that's a
bit too small, and is what I was hoping to replace - but it would have
been too similar. The bad news is that I'm now left lusting to find a
used, early, 26 All-Rounder in a LARGER size, that I wasn't even
aware existed until a few minutes ago

[RBW] Re: Schwinn Paramount P-15 Country Bike

2012-07-09 Thread Joe K
It's beautiful, Jim!

One question. On such a tall bike, how do you feel about the downtube
shifters? When I went from a 58cm frame to a 62cam Riv, I found the
reach to the downtube something I wouldn't want to do routinely, so
opted for bar-ends. Perhaps your arms are longer than mine.

I have a Univega beater that has the right frame size, but the stem
and bars don't really fit...looking for longer and wider myself.

Very, very pretty bike, except the pump peg clamped across the 531 sticker

match. I wouldn't have been able to install that clip in that location,

[RBW] Re: Shock cord arrangement ideas for the Baggins handlebar bag

2012-07-09 Thread Jim Cloud
William,

I just took a couple of photos from the original Rivendell catalogs of
the Baggins handlebar bag. These photos may allow you to see how the
closure system was originally designed. It's obvious that there would
be more than one way to use the elastic cords and barrel cord locks to
secure the top. Here's the photos:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37964304@N05/sets/72157630504415628/

The bag has some brass loops and a couple of hooks to keep the lid closed

The other constraint I have is that the center leather tap thing with the

over one hook.  Are there any old photos from old Readers?  None of this is

[RBW] Re: Schwinn Paramount P-15 Country Bike

2012-07-09 Thread Jim Cloud
Joe,

I had the downtube shifters mounted lower until recently on the
downtube. They really were too much of a reach! I had my mechanic
move them up recently, and I've found them to be satisfactory.

By the way, I did use downtube shifters on this bike for many years
previously. The Campy shifters were the original equipment on the
bike from Schwinn (although they also supplied SunTour Bar-cons as an
optional extra).

I have a Univega beater that has the right frame size, but the stem
and bars don't really fit...looking for longer and wider myself.

better on the lower portion of the seat tube, but that's where it is!

kinda curious about how it will ride with the taller BB height? The Hetres
are great tires and on a 56 frame they look really good.
I've seen the LHT's with a similar wheel switch and they work well too.
I'm thinking about this change on my '87 lugged Stumpjumper that has rack
and fender mounts and a fairly low BB as well. Mine's a 59cm frame so the
slightly bigger wheels will look more normal too.
I'm getting closer to having the canti mounts moved and repainted...

[RBW] Re: Schwinn Paramount P-15 Country Bike

2012-07-09 Thread Jim Cloud
Robert,

Thanks for your remark! The most recent time I took the bike into my
LBS (to install the bars and stem) my favorite mechanic commented I
love this bike...

I haven't bothered to weigh the bike. I'm sure it's no lightweight.
Schwinn had a design philosophy, back in the day, that stressed
rigidity over lightness (Ref: The Custom Bicycle, Michael J. Kolin
and Denise M. de la Rosa, copyright 1979). They actually spec'd a
special frametube set from Reynolds that was heavier than the standard
531DB set. The weight was concentrated in thicker butts on the tube
ends.

As some have commented, the additional weight of a filled water bottle
is equivalent to the weight that many have stressed out about!

[RBW] Ride a bike- save a duck.

2012-07-09 Thread Manuel Acosta
While riding with the lady friend, we come across a duck that seemed to be
separated from it's flock via a fence. Being the animal lover I am I was
there ready for the rescue. I convince the lady friend to help me corner
the duck so that I catch it. After much sweet talking to the duck I finally
grab it and toss it over the fence. Good deed done for the day. Sadly the
lady friend won't hold my hand after touching the duck.

Pictures proved that we rode. Sadly no pictures of me duck tossing(so that
might not have really happened) :

Riv club and did a similar rebuild to yours a few years ago. I
swapped a lot of the original parts in the name of ride-ability and of
course Nitto took over the steering components. I went with a TA
crank and DiaCompe/Schwinn center pulls and recently converted back to
the original Campy high flange hubs mated to 700c wheels. I ride my
Rivendells more but I LOVE my Paramount.

Is it me or does it looks like the top tube and the mid-seat stays line
up?

...because I've always wished they were built like that.

[RBW] Re: Schwinn Paramount P-15 Country Bike

2012-07-09 Thread Jim Cloud
Rob,
You have a very nice looking Paramount! I think the all chrome
Paramounts were some of the most attractive Chicago era Paramounts,
and yours is top notch!

The conversion of a 27 wheel size to 700c really increases the
versatility of a classic bike, in my opinion. There are certainly
some good 27 tires available, but they aren't as diversified as those
in the 700c size.

Like you, I do ride my Rivendell more frequently, but my Paramount is
still a great bike.

Awesome!  Jim I think you've got one of the best Rivendells I've ever
seen but that Paramount is right up there.  I'm also in the Paramount/

Here's the
