Re: [RBW] Subject Lines

2013-02-21 Thread Philip Williamson
Being back in California, the only way I can tell that it's winter is that the
list gets testy.

Yes, friends, please title your threads sensibly. I know I've come back to
posts I've written and thought, what? The title made sense to me at the
time... It takes 2 seconds to reread your post title after you've written the
post, and another 4 seconds to answer the question does this describe my
post? Manny's Snow on Mt Ham title was great, I thought. If that was my
first introduction to the topic, it would have hooked me, and I would have had
a good idea of what was to come.

The other thing I've had to learn... is to reread my posts and ask myself,
does this advance the dialog on this list, or am I just showing off, or
blurting out? If the post or reply is all about me, I delete it. Some of you
are saying, sure, half the time... Yeah, well I'm a recovering smart ass, and
it's one day at a time...

Not an admin, just an Internet bike nerd like yourselves, but I think the list
does a fantastic job of policing itself.

Manny, what a great time! Thanks again so much for planning it out! As
great as Manny's photos are, the scenery was even more beautiful. We
were just riding along with roads completely to ourselves saying how lucky
we were. It was a good mix of some trails and roads, which is my favorite
kind of riding, as probably most on the list. The snow was a blast. We
had some repair issues( mud under too tight of fender lines and a couple o
flats), but that added to the adventure. Cant wait to do it again!

Second day when we started climbing up into colder wetter weather. About

so we were having a blast. Cold, wet and hungry we retreated inside for
warmt and food. The Licks Observatory and Post Office were close so we made
hot chocolate and had some salami and cheese inside. As our chocolate
cooled down the snow started coming slowly. Then it started coming down
hard. Amgood 4 inches before we knew it. While 4 inches of snow may not be
a big deal to you mid-US folks. It was a big deal when you had another 4000
feet of descent to go. To be honest I was pretty freaked out and ready to
call it quits, but Mike convinced me otherwise and reminded that me that we
are on bikes and worse case we just walk down. So we suited up with

The ride was fine. Like riding in soft slippery sand, we took it easy and
got the hell off the road when we saw cars. Every car that passed us looked
like they had trouble they pooled over and asked if we needed a ride, Once
we dropped down 2000 ft all the snow turned into cold rain and we rode
basically in a drizzle till we got to the Junction Cafe, which THANKFULLY
was open. When Anne said biker bar, I was expecting a hardcore bar with
motorcycles outside and bar fights inside. Way opposite. Nice family, old
fashion, truck stop restaurant that had everything and anything you needed
 for the last 30 miles.
We warmed up, had burgers and made out way to great looking weather the
rest of the ride. We even saw the sun as we descended down to Livermoore.

Really memorable trip. Glad I got to check off something off my bucket

can somebody tell me what this thread's about? Sorry, couldn't resist. I
can tell you from being on several antique collecting boards (the the
subject, not necessarily the posters), searching the archives for historic

etc. is in the subject line. The What is This? thread may have great
photos, historical documentation, but it will be lost in a week or two.
Honestly? I've tried searching topics that I remembered on this board,
trying to glean some great technical bit I vaguely remember, but is now
lost in the shuffle...

Re: [RBW] Re: Can you fit 130 mm modern group specs with old 126 mm spacing?

2013-02-21 Thread Scott Henry
Jim might be able to more acurately chime in on this, but after about a
dozen years in the shops, I think its the other way around. Shops make
money on partsand labor. At least for me, standard markup on a complete
bike was in the 30-35% range. The markup on parts was 100% and labor was
just pure gold. Thats was years ago, but even then the labor rate was
based off of something like $75 hourly. Your shop may vary, but thats how
it worked in my area (Cincinnati).

We liked to sell hot bikes for one reason only, because we got to build
them. There was a special enjoyment from wrenching on top-o-the-line
stuff. The boss wanted us changing front tubes all day, they were the
fastest easy money that you could make on a two minute repair.

More or less, a shop saying you can't run a 130 wheel in a 126 frame is
just lazy. It probably tells me that the employee was also the mechanic
and just didnt want to do the work. He'll get paid minimum wage either way.

Re: [RBW] Re: Can you fit 130 mm modern group specs with old 126 mm spacing?

2013-02-21 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I can certainly envision several reasons why your LBS told you that.

It could be that the shop employee was inexperienced and doesn't know much
about older bikes.

Or it could be that the shop doesn't want the liability associated with
installing parts that are, technically speaking, incompatible with the frame.

Or maybe, they've gone down the rabbit hole of modernizing old bikes in the
past, and feel that it isn't worth the trouble. I know that I've had experience
with that kind of thing, where some unforeseen and seemingly trivial
incompatibility issue causes the project to take 5x longer than quoted and in
the end, the solution was a kludge that isn't 100% satisfactory.

Or maybe you're the fifth guy this week who wanted to put a modern parts group
on an old bike, and they figured that, like the previous four, you'd balk at
the high price, and it would be just easier for everybody if they cut to the
chase and say no. After all, buying a parts group and wheelset and the labor
to install it all can often cost as much as or more than a new bike that has
the same parts and wheelset.

Jim, based on my experience, you are right on the money. When I got out to
Colorado and wanted someone to just look over my 1971 Schwinn SS, no one in

[RBW] First Dixie Mtn ride of 2013.

2013-02-21 Thread Mike
Yesterday my friend Ed and I rode Dixie Mtn, a local ride here in Portland
that takes in miles of dirt climbs. We did what I consider to be the
classic route which goes out to Scappoose and takes in Otto Miller Rd.
Dixie Mtn can also be ridden from Washington County. No rain. No
mechanicals. Miles of quiet roads. A little exploration. Just a really nice
day on the bike. I wasn't on my Hilsen, but I was on my LHT which is very
Riv-centric.

For Portland Riv listers, Smitty and I have been talking about doing a Riv
ride out that way. I'm not sure what the total mileage would be but bring
your climbing legs.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT Bunyan Velo

2013-02-21 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I'm not easily impressed by writing or photos, but the photos in this
collection are among the best I've seen in a bike publication and many
are National Geographic quality. Haven't read it, just skimmed the
pictures, so can't comment on the quality of writing but will peruse
it later when I have more time.

I was however disappointed that the bosque article was not more
informative and a less merely impressionistic, and that the photos
were not more straightforward and -- well, more informative, too. Of
what interest is the lower quarter of a knobby tire? I take it the
author is riding somewhere near my spot (the junction of the N-S
bosque and E-W Central Ave/Route 66 is about 5 miles directly south of
me). The bosque is desert compared to, say, Valley State Park on Maui,
but it is still beautiful, even in winter.

I didn't really have to pull it apart much at all so I just went with it.

The must-cold-set folks lose a little credibility with all the steel frames

Still, if it was a super nice frame and was a tight 126 I'd pay to get it
done right.

I remember a post some time ago on the forum where it was commented that
none of the staff bikes had dyno-powered lighting systems. I was just

The Schmidt seems to be a leftover from a build, only one in stock, but
no mention of how many BuschMuller they have hanging around. Do you think
this are a permanent addition? I am happy with my Supernova Airstream, but
thought y'all might want to know.

[RBW] Re: Subject Lines

2013-02-21 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Thanks Michael -

This is a pretty consistent issue and always moving target, so to speak.
It's part of the noise in the system and falls to each person to reduce.

Those folks who have been here since the beginning know that the
February/March period of the year sometimes provides the highest noise in
this group. (and _most_ groups, as well, but we can only worry about
ourselves, eh?) We have even talked about taking a group vacation where
the group is stopped for 2 or 3 weeks. That would be tougher now that this
isn't a listserve-based endeavour, but I still don't think it would be such
a bad idea.

Thread Subjects, Thread Content and Respect for other Members are not
abstract concepts. They are not out of our control. The most important
tool at our disposal is the Delete key. As Philip wrote so cogently,
the best responses to the group at large are those which survive such a
simple does this add or enhance the conversation? test.

It has always been a tenet of this group to maintain a more narrow, focused
range of topics, and to do so with a tone of respect. Simple as that.

Granted, I've been bopping around the internet since usenet was, well,
useful. I still have reasonably high hopes for this medium, and the quality
of insight and assistance on this group always gives me hope.

Thanks to everyone for their input, contributions and manners.

[RBW] RBW Rides Calendar

2013-02-21 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
The recent thread about the upcoming Ventura SoCal Riv Riders ride finally
sparked something in my brain, and I realized that it might make some sense
for a general calendar of RBW-Oriented rides which take place. I'm not
sure if we tried this before, but with the newer Google Calendar, it has
some options which may make it easier. So

*
https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=8a37382eq2dn6aq9b9vf0froe0%40group.calendar.google.comctz=America/Los_Angeles

or

*This can be added to your google calendar (which of course can be
integrated with your clever phone or keyboardless computer), or just
accessed through the permalink above. Also, I've embedded the calendar on
the bottom of my cyclofiend.com blog - http://cyclofiend.blogspot.com

I've deputized a few list members (ones who have posted rides) - well...
shanghai'd might be more appropriate - so I'll wait until they confirm
back to me before publicly sharing their identities. If you have a
RBW-friendly ride you would like to put on, pop me an email and I'll either
give you posting access or steer you towards someone who does.

It probably makes sense to have a general perspective about such rides,
rather than specific rules. Entmoots, Mixed-Terrain, Caffenneurring,
Errandonnee, S24O's, etc. Big Organized Rides like Levi's Gran Fondo,
Certain Centuries probably don't need to be emphasized here, but if a gang
of twin-top-tubed, fendered-and-racked RBW enthusiasts wanted to meet at a
specific place and time on one of those rides, it seems like they should be
able to give a shout with details.

I'll look into having this accessible via the GooGroups page, but at first
glance, it was not obvious. Will advise.

open to refinements and tweaks, of course!

[RBW] Re: Can you fit 130 mm modern group specs with old 126 mm spacing?

2013-02-21 Thread William
Remember RB1s were spaced 128mm when they came with a 126mm 7 speed rear
end or a 130mm 8 speed rear end.

Remember also that the first Shimano 130mm rear hubs had a cone shaped left
lock nut that would allow you to pull the rear wheel in, which would pull
your frame out to 130 for you.

I had some shops tell me I had to do it and some tell me I didn't. Then I

I didn't really have to pull it apart much at all so I just went with it.

The must-cold-set folks lose a little credibility with all the steel
frames that measure 132.5 or whatever and let you use both MTB and road
 hubs.

Still, if it was a super nice frame and was a tight 126 I'd pay to get it
 done right.

Hey Jim just to be clear I'm not slamming bike stores. And regarding where
they make their dough yes just like automotive outfits its the parts and
labor where they make their money. I've never run a bike store and can only
imagine the number of idiotic questions plus resistance to spending money
by some customers. In the case of my LBS I think it's a case of just being
busy. I'm happy their busy and doing business. I also agree that doing a
resurectio project can and probably is more expensive than buying a bike
off the rack but for me the end result will be far more satisfying.

I can certainly envision several reasons why your LBS told you that.

It could be that the shop employee was inexperienced and doesn't know much
 about older bikes.

Or it could be that the shop doesn't want the liability associated with
installing parts that are, technically speaking, incompatible with the
 frame.

Or maybe, they've gone down the rabbit hole of modernizing old bikes in
the past, and feel that it isn't worth the trouble. I know that I've had
experience with that kind of thing, where some unforeseen and seemingly
trivial incompatibility issue causes the project to take 5x longer than
quoted and in the end, the solution was a kludge that isn't 100%
 satisfactory.

Or maybe you're the fifth guy this week who wanted to put a modern parts
group on an old bike, and they figured that, like the previous four, you'd
balk at the high price, and it would be just easier for everybody if they
cut to the chase and say no. After all, buying a parts group and wheelset
and the labor to install it all can often cost as much as or more than a
new bike that has the same parts and wheelset.

2013-02-21 Thread Garth
I don't have any photos .. lol !!! The frames I did it on were 531 ST,
Columbus SLX and an 83 Stumpjumper. The builder showed me how to do it,
without tools. He showed me outside his rural shop, in the grass of all
places !!! I asked him where his tools were , he siad he didn't need any
as he's done it so many times . He did have a tool to check it though, but
he was spot on the first time .

Basically you go by feel . If one has no confidence to do this, by all
means DO NOT do it !! I had experience in shop doing it with tools, so I
already had an idea of how to do it, but not with no tools !! The frame on
it's side, gently pull one stay towards you at a time. Check it with a
string test or if you have a large straight edge .

It's mostly a matter of self confidence, just know you can do it , and you
do it :)

[RBW] Re: RBW Rides Calendar

2013-02-21 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
How will it work as far as... do people specifically have to check the
calendar to see what rides are coming up? If I post (or email one of the
mods to post) a PDX Riv ride for the first Saturday in April, do PDX area
Riv-sters who are on the list have to take the additional step of going to
the calendar to find out about the ride? Will rides just end up getting
duo-posted... to the list and to the calendar?
I don't mean this as a complaint at all... just an observation... This
seems like one of those situations where a forum format with different
categories (Riding Partners, Riv Wrenching, Ride Reports, FS/WTB, etc)
could be more user friendly.

[RBW] Carradice

2013-02-21 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
A few years ago I tried to buy a Super C saddlebag and quick release
Bagman for commuting use. Carradice is a traditional British
manufacturer, producing high quality hand made products but perhaps a
bit lacking in modern management techniques. Anyway, for whatever
reason they were out of stock of one or the other for months and it
took forever to get them. The system works really well for me and was
definitely worth the wait.

The flip side of traditional manufacturing is this:
Last week I fell and managed to break and lose the pin on one side of
the Bagman's quick release mechanism. I tried to buy a new Bagman but,
big surprise, they were out of stock. So I wrote to Carradice and
asked for a replacement pin. The next day I got an email from Margret
saying they were in the mail. Thanks Carradice :)

[RBW] LOST Robert! Smallest Wood Sasquatch !

2013-02-21 Thread Manuel Acosta
For those that don't know on my last summer tour back from Seattle, I
picked up my token todem wood carved Sasquatch from Knot Only A Bear in
Oregon. I called him Robert after his maker.

http://flic.kr/p/cS3Qws

Let me start from the beginning.. So Sean asked if I wanted to go on a
bike/hike up to Rock City. I stopped by RivHQ to talk to the weekday folks.
Got to talk to Jared and his buddy Benedict about their recent 4 day
adventure down the coast. Saw some cool pictures of Jared doing some sweet
jumps from his trip. Sean comes by and talks about snow on top of Diablo.
Convinces me to ride up with him, Benedict joins us on his new 4 day old
blue Hillborne (already looks well loved.) We get past the Junction and see
no snow so we decided to ride down taking the dirt along the way. Benedict
proves to be a super strong rider, ended up riding up the trail that Sean
and me dubbed the famous Jay turn. Legend goes that only Jay Ritchey was
the only one able to ride the turn and up the loose gravely without putting
the foot down. Well after three tries and a broken front derailler,
Benedict kills it. We take Stage road back and this is where I think I lost
Robert. It was muddy and wet so a couple of hard drops could have dislogded
him out of his zip-tided home. If anyone finds him sent him over to
Rivendell HQ, they know how to get a hold of me.

Pictures proved that Robert is somewhere along this trail.

[RBW] Re: Any Riv tandem riders--tire width?

2013-02-21 Thread Salween
Did decide on a custom, coupled Java frame. Couple of questions for Ed.
1) I saw in your Speedster farewell
poshttp://thedailyrandonneur.wordpress.com/2012/12/02/we-bid-farewell-to-our-tandem-companion-the-co-motion-speedster/t

that you decided to forgo canti brake studs on the Java. So you guys have
been pretty happy with just the two discs, even for touring? Considering
the same for the first time, but the Arai sure has been a trusted friend
when needed.
2) How do you find the handling given that the Java's front geometry is
quite a bit different from Co-Motion's other tandems--and as Jay noted
possibly akin to 32mm tires on a Santana?

Thanks, Owen

Yesterday my friend Ed and I rode Dixie Mtn, a local ride here in

the classic route which goes out to Scappoose and takes in Otto Miller

mechanicals. Miles of quiet roads. A little exploration. Just a really nice
day on the bike. I wasn't on my Hilsen, but I was on my LHT which is very
 Riv-centric.

For Portland Riv listers, Smitty and I have been talking about doing a
Riv ride out that way. I'm not sure what the total mileage would be but
 bring your climbing legs.

Re: [RBW] Can you fit 130 mm modern group specs with old 126 mm spacing?

I had no issue with indexing and Campy above the bb cable guides. Not sure why
that would be an issue anyway.

[RBW] Re: RBW Rides Calendar

2013-02-21 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Andy -

Have no idea how this will work. ;^)

I think it's reasonably malleable - for example, you can invite specific
people (guests) via email, and then mention that the event is in the
calendar to open it up. The tinyurl link - http://tinyurl.com/rbw-rides*
*- should be permanent. (the google link is kinda clunky, but once you add
it to your google calendar, it will appear with your other stuff.

This is probably as good a place as any to state the obvious disclaimer -
the Calendar and all listings are not associated with Rivendell Bicycle
Works. It is only an unofficial listing of events that might be of
interest to people in the Rivendell Owner's Bunch here on Google Groups.

I'm sure we'll gain some efficiencies as we practice with this.

On Thursday, February 21, 2013 4:37:26 PM UTC-8, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote:

How will it work as far as... do people specifically have to check the

The recent thread about the upcoming Ventura SoCal Riv Riders ride
finally sparked something in my brain, and I realized that it might make
some sense for a general calendar of RBW-Oriented rides which take place.
I'm not sure if we tried this before, but with the newer Google Calendar,
it has some options which may make it easier. So

 *
 https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=8a37382eq2dn6aq9b9vf0froe0%40group.calendar.google.comctz=America/Los_Angeles

I'll look into having this accessible via the GooGroups page, but at
first glance, it was not obvious. Will advise.

open to refinements and tweaks, of course!

[RBW] Re: RBW Rides Calendar

2013-02-21 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Oop - sorry - rizzirattin' frizzifrattin' trackmouse!

Anyway, as I was saying - we'll gain efficiencies as we play with this.
And Conventions as well. Off the top of my head (at the end of a longish
day...):

General Location/Type of Ride in Headline (e.g. SF-North Bay Mixed Terrain)

Description of Route in Description - The Description field supports a
goodly amount of text. In fact, I just played around with a test event for
this weekend.

The listings even support some mapping.

Anyway - I'm sure this will take more form in the coming days. If you want
to post some rides, email me at my gmail account (cyclofiend at gmail dot
com) for fastest response.
