Re: [RBW] WTB 28c Ruffy Tuffy Tires
I have a pair on the way. Thanks to all who mentioned they had spares. These are going to be used on a sweet Bridgestone T700 I picked up recently. Low miles, pearl white pain in great shape. Even the original bar tape looks like new. Life is good and it's getting me in the mood for Spring. [RBW] Re: WTB: Periscopa or 80mm Dirt Drop Stem
I am glad the photo was helpful. However, the photo is deceiving as to the saddle; the saddle is a Brooks B68 which they do not appear to make anymore. I have a Standard B17 on my commuting bike, and it would not be a good choice for me on a more upright set-up. The B 68 is fine with the periscope bars as it is a wider saddle. I think the B68 was just a B67 without springs. I would recommend a B67 which has springs. Many riders with a more upright riding position have them and seem to like them. In short any saddle on which you can comfortably place more weight will ease the pressure on your arms and hands. [RBW] Re: All Rounder with Midge bar UPDATE
Man,that's a nice bike. I really like that yellow and I think the black tape looks fine. That's an early Waterford AR,correct? On Friday, March 15, 2013 7:15:01 PM UTC-5, jinxed wrote: OK. So after some excellent and insightful RBW list input I went ahead and ordered the OnOne Midge bars some Cane Creek levers, and some Kenda MTB tires. My immediate goal was to alter the hand positions. I've been pretty content with the mustache bar set up, but have come to really enjoy the flats and wide sram hoods of my cross bike. My default position on the m-bars was basically on the very ends with my palms hanging over the bar end shifters. I thought adding the closer brake position and the flats of a more traditional drop bar would be a welcome change. As soon as the bars came in, I was happy I made the purchase, even if they dont remain on the Rivendell. Right out of the box they looked interestingly comfortable. NICE wide top flat section, short reach, tight and short drop. They flair but not out of control. I had heard the drop section was short, and it is, but to me seemed perfect. I got them installed with a vacant stem so I wouldnt have to completely disassemble my M-bar set up. The stem is a little too long, but the short reach on the bar still pulled the levers back vs the m-bar. I set up the Midge essentially parallel with the ground with the drops pointing down. The levers then become a nice flat extension of the bar and make for some good hand placement real estate! The flair on the midge is restrained enough to still use the tops of the lever hoods. This is what I was looking for. I also wanted to add some knobbage to the marathonesque bonty tires I was using without going full on 2.1 mtb. I am VERY happy I ran across the Kenda Klimax 1.9 tires. They were exactly what I wanted. Good enough knobs to hit some aggressive singletrack, but civilized on the pavement. So now in V.3.0 I took to the road so to speak. I did a nice meandering 30+ mile ride in mixed terrain to get some initial impressions. The extra width and positions of the bars were very welcome in varying conditions. Having the flats gave a nice upright comfortable cruising placement and then the wide hoods were awesome in the dirt. I was so impressed with the feel off road, I would consider these on my dedicated mtb. The drops worked surprisingly well on the couple steep dirt climbs I encountered too. I had quick access to the shifters without having to move away from reaching the brakes. So overall I think this is a positive change. I will say this however...when you ride a 700c CX bike and a 29er MTB...jumping on a 26 feels SO SLUGGISH. I kept checking to see if my brakes were dragging! I kept wondering if I could shoehorn a 650b in there and get some brakes to work! The AR is an awesome bike, but I will say that my old too small Bleriot felt loads more efficient. Here is a beautiful shot of the garage door with the newly altered bike obscuring the view. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8531/8561112128_8bc9a3e879_b.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Thanks! I have not yet made peace with the yellow, but that's the fickle artist in me that I generally try to ignore. [RBW] Re: In Praise of The Rambo
My first encounter with a Ram. Shortly after the turn of the Century / Millennium, I became fascinated by the RBW website and the bikes, but conflicted about springing for a new bike. While visiting my son in Victoria we took our bikes on a ferry and headed out to explore one of the islands in Puguet Sound and there I saw my first RIV, an orange Ram. I fell in love. But by the time I got home, paid the cc bill and looked again the 62 cc orange Rams were gone. A year later I bought a blue one and it has been my all time favorite bike ever since. Today I rode 20 miles on the Los Gatos Creek Trail with my son and 3 other friends. They were riding mountain bikes and I was riding my Betty. [RBW] Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
I recently bought an almost new Saluki, advertised on this site. There should have been a bidding war for this bike, but that's another question. This bike is drop dead gorgeous and I am looking forward to the end of Mud Season here in Vermont to take it out on the road. Meanwhile I have been working on a few, unfortunately, necessary changes. The stem / TT combination is too long for me and unfortunately had to be changed out from a beautiful Nitto Pearl. That went straight forward. But the brake rack combination has created some perplexity. The bike came with a pair of Tektro brakes, identical to the ones RIV sells, except a high polish finish; and a VO rack ( http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/racks/pass-hunter-front-rack-with-integrated-decaleur.html ) which mounts through the canti brakes. It also has a set of VO AL fenders which are bolted to the fenders. I wanted to swap the brakes for my Neo Retros, which first required a new mounting bolt, which I obtained from Pauls. But when I mounted them on the bile I found that the rack no longer mated with the fender. Apparently the Paul bolt is beefier and longer than the VO version. As a result the rack sits about an inch or more above the fenders. This presents me with some options A: Can I bend the rack to fit? This doesn't look easy. B: Ignore the problem and the connection between the rack and front fender. C: Sell the rack and use an M12 mounted to the fork braise ons, which will probably create a different contact point on the fender. D: Abandon the Pauls brakes. Help wanted. Re: [RBW] Optimal clearance for metal fenders...
Rene, I struggled with the fenders on my Hunqapillar. My thoughtful wife bought me some hammered VOs as a gift because I had mentioned that I thought they would look great on the Hunq. And they would have - but with 47-622 Marathons there wasn't a mm to spare. My normal commute takes me down a gravel trail with stones and sticks. I fret the sticks more than the stones. After several attempts to fit the VOs (two sizes and lots of thinking..). I had to go back to my tried and true SKS. They worked best for me and where I ride. Good luck... Bob On Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 3:03 AM, René Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote: My Hunqapillar is back from the painter. Photos will come soon, but I'm building it up and addressing some minor issues. One of these is how much clearance I want between the 50mm Dureme tires, and perhaps at some point, 55mm BAs or the new version. The reason I'm asking, is because this bike will obviously be ridden on dirt as well as paved trails. Not sure yet if I'd ever put knobbies with fenders, but I want to try to minimize the risk of a stone getting stuck between the fender and the tire. As such, the question is whether more clearance minimizes this hazard or actually increases, since bigger rocks/stones or other debris can get pulled into the fender by the tires. I can get lots of clearance on the Hunqapillar for the fenders, so as I was mounting the rear one the question came to be. Hey Group, Up for sale is a used 61cm AHH F/F/HS/BB. Its Toyo built, if that means anything. Repainted Butterscotch. Its 'creamier' in life than in the photos. definitely used, never abused. It has some paint chips here an there that i covered with nail polish. Some chainsuck chips and a little wear on the inside left chainstay from tire rub I guess. I sometimes squeezed 42s, so that is my only guess. There is also some shellac residue on the headtube and a little on the DT and TT. Headset is FSA almost brand new, oldish BB but still is smooth.Asking $1000+ shipping, which is now way less than half of the newly priced AHHframes which would be roughly $2500 including tax. thanks -Mike http://www.flickr.com/photos/**92673144@N02/http://www.flickr.com/photos/92673144@N02/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Since then we have gotten on plenty of rides and have gotten lost plenty of times. There's a lot of nice things I can say about Sean but it would start getting a redundant. Let's keep it short and sweet and say he's a blast to have as a friend. A pretty interesting subject for photos. http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=41060758@N07q=sean His birthday ride was great. Usually four of us. Sean, Will, Tom and me but got a cool surprise from Keven who was able to make it out with the Appaloosa. Sean is apparently the Breaker of Bikes and had a huge mechanical problem that would have ended the ride if it wasn't for Keven who was nice enough to offer the Appaloosa for Sean to finish the ride as he got a ride back to the city. (Huge bummer not be able to ride with Keven.) Our five turned to four as we continued. We did a short but sweet loop around the Marin Headlands. Good amount of riding on great terrain with great group of people. Thanks Sean for being born and having a ride to celebrate your birth. Pictures prove that birthday rides are always good ideas. http://flic.kr/s/aHsjEnGuEx -Manny Happy Birthday Sean Acosta -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: In Praise of The Rambo
I first had a blue Ram bought new, then it was hit by a car and no longer rideable. Shortly after that I bought a used orange Ram model. For some reason, the orange Ram has always seemed a better ride than the blue one. [RBW] Re: Heron FS in SoCal
If I remember, the bars are upside down Dovebars, and the dummy brake levers I used to extend the cockpit. Alas, the bike is still a bit too small for me which is why I'm selling. I'm keeping my 58cm Heron. The flat back paint was an attempt to match the color of my first bike that I got 50 years ago. Cheers, K.
