One relative constant has been allowable size for checked luggage, 62
linear inches. Outside that dimension you typically pay oversize fees even
if you don't exceed the maxiumum weight limit.

For the occasional trip, there is no doubt that paying the oversize fee
and dragging around a full-size bike box is cheaper. I liked the Crateworks
corrugated plastic box, it is lighter than a hard case but tougher than
cardboard, folds up for storage and can be re-used.

After a few trips, however, you could end up pay as much in fees as
buying couplers and the SS case. The advantages of SS, in terms of
reduced packing hassle and ease of movement during your trip, are of value
to me even if I never fully pay off through travel. This is especially true
with a tandem, where the trouble of lugging a huge box and paying big fees
at the counter isn't my idea of fun travel.

If you know you are going to travel with a frameset and are getting it
repainted anyway, it's the right time to consider couplers. I recommend
 them.

At first, I entertained the idea of installing SS couplers on the Ram

$$. So now I'm thinking about just flying with it, as is. The Ram is a
66cm, so finding a box that would accommodate its sprawl would be one of
 the chief concerns.

Any good experiences? Things to avoid? Anything to report with

had the single, dropped top tube. I suspect the single dropped tube was
influenced by the fashion for Italian bikes. Many Italian makers offered
frames of this type. (In Germany where I grew up, it was very unusual even
for a sporting woman to ride a men's frame, so you saw these Italian
frames, outfitted with Campagnolo components, on training rides.)

I've often wondered about the ride of these women's bikes. From a basic
engineering perspective, I understand the idea that ending a tube in the
middle of another tube is a big no-no – you want triangulation. That
clearly is what Reyhand was thinking when he developed the model with the
extra rear stays, which transmit the loads of the diagonal tube to the rear
dropouts. On the other hand, the flexing of the seat tube (on the Italian
frames) could provide a little suspension, which might not be bad. Then you
have all the issues of frame flex and planing... where a compact frame
(since that is what the Reyhand style was, if you remove the uppermost set
of seat stays) might be stiffer than perhaps ideal for its rider.

[RBW] Re: Let's imagine a Tallux with a removable faceplate.

2014-01-09 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Yes, I agree... the stem faceplate is one of those smart innovations that
should be on EVERY stem, quill or threadless. Same goes for brake levers
and shifters... NOTHING should ever have to slide over the grips or
navigate around impossible curves... they should directly install (in my
opinion).

Another pet peeve of mine is that quills (in general) come too short. Of
the 4 sets of Nitto Bullmoose bars I have bought, only one (for reasons
unknown) has a halfway decent length, allowing me to achieve the height I
really like. The others have only a few inches... I'm maxed out, still
wishing for the option of more height. I realize that for every tall
whiner like me there are plenty of others who ride normal sized frames that
probably can't handle a long quill... But one of the great advantages of a
quill IS the adjustability... so having limited adjustability (to me)
diminishes the utility of a quill... End of rant.

A lot of those double tubes are very flexible though and not in the

Interestingly, mixte seems to have a clear definition more in the U.S.
than in France. Of the great constructeurs, I've only seen the term mixte
used in the Goéland catalogue. Most speak of vélo dame or similar terms.

Regarding the frame design, the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was invented by
 A. Sixt in the 1930s, as a more triangulated design that was intended to
make the frame stiffer than the traditional women's frames with a deeply
dropped or even curved diagonal tube. He also used twin diagonal tubes to
 stiffen tandem frames.

Around 1938, the great constructeur Reyhand developed a more
sophisticated frame design, with a dropped single top tube and two extra
seatstays. In profile, it looks similar to the twin-diagonal-tubed frame.
To stiffen the connection at the center of the frame, the extra stays
extend beyond the seat tube and attach to the diagonal tube as well. André
Reiss, the maker of Reynand, patented this design, as well as a tandem
frame with two sets of diagonal reinforcement stays (one set from the head
tube to the rear BB, the other from the front seat lug to the rear
dropouts). After Reiss died in World War II, the designs were widely copied.

You can see examples of these designs in the Bicycle Quarterly Image
 Archive at

 http://www.bikequarterly.com/color_photo_supplement.html

The twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was much easier to make, and thus remained
popular among mass producers. I don't think Sheldon Brown was even aware of
the second Reyhand type when he coined his definition of mixte, but he
was thinking of women's frames with either a dropped top tube with no extra
rear stays (which puts bending loads on the seat tube and thus offends
engineers) or the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte. More recently, Rivendell
inspired its mixtes on the Reyhand type, but without extending the extra
 stays beyond the seat tube.

Shaun,

Based on my experience and research, I love the design of the Atlantis.
However, it's a pricey option so I'm considering a LHT instead. The only
thing about the Trucker that concerns me is the chainstay length of 46cm
(compared to the 44cm chainstays of the Atlantis). You've ridden both so
did you notice an appreciable difference in the ride/handling that can be
attributed to that additional 2cm of chainstay length on the LHT?

I've got a 64cm LHT that replaced a 68cm Atlantis. There is probably 1 or
2 more cm of seatpost showing on the Trucker but I feel more comfortable on
it. With spacers on the steerer the vertical relationship beween the saddle
and the bars is the same as on the Atlantis (bars slightly higher than
saddle). I sized the Atlantis based on PBH, as RBW recommends, and the top
tube always felt too long on the bike.

Matt, how do you know that the Hunqapillar's listed length is not the

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike Fitting - A Mine Field

2014-01-09 Thread Chris Lampe 2
When I had my old Trek Multitrack re-fitted with a threadless fork it took
two phone calls and a personal visit to the shop to convince them not to
cut the steerer tube! I told them to stack the spacers and put the stem
at the very top (so I'd have plenty of cable length). I'll admit it looked
ridiculous and was uncomfortable to ride but I immediately dropped the stem
about half-way down the steerer and went from there with experimenting for
a final position.

When the shop took delivery of the bike, my friend called me asking for my
advice as to what height he should have his steerer cut to, as the shop
was ready to cut it for him as part of the assembly and set-up process.

I told him to ask them not cut it at all, and to have them install
adequate spacers for assembly. I explained that he could then play around
with the height indefinitely and if and when he knew that he had his bars
exactly where he wanted them, we could then cut it. He was buying a 64cm
bike too, so it wasn't a ton of spacers. I also told him that my 64cm (that
he did a test ride on) still has the full steerer and that the stem was
 right at the top.

He relayed his request to the shop (while I was still on the phone) and he
got a surprising amount of resistance! No you don't want to do that, etc.
I kept insisting that that's exactly what he wanted them to do and it
almost became an argument with my friend stuck in the middle. They finally
agreed not to cut it and installed the spacers.

I guess some shops just have the mentality that the steerer needs to be
 cut.

Wow, Jim, thanks for this information.

I had never really thought about this since I always ride Surly's largest

 of the 700c bikes have a 320 mm steer tube. I'm glad I didn't get a 64cm
LHT thinking I would get additional bar height over a 62! And I'm equally
glad I didn't advise anyone to go for larger sizes just to get the bars
higher because your point about the problem of getting too large of a frame
when buying a Surly using the Riv sizing guidelines seems right on.
However, negative perceptions about stacks o spacers on uncut tubes do
complicate putting someone on the best frame size as you suggest. It took
me a year to sell my wife on a steer tube extension for her road bike
because she didn't like the way it looked. Neck pain and hand numbness
eventually helped to make the case.

I did note that the 26 LHT's do have different sized steerers for
different ranges. Size 54 and below have a 300mm steer tube and 56 and
above have a 380mm steer tube.

It seems clear also that a 62cm CC would have a lower max bar height than
 a 62cm LHT given that CC's have a 300mm steer tube and LHT's have a 320mm
tube. So . . . someone looking to get those bars up there for a given frame
size would be better served by getting the LHT.

All Cross-checks in all sizes come out of the box with 300 mm steerers.
With a 62 cm frame, there is nothing to cut off because the head tube is
long enough to allow a stem and maybe an inch or two of spacers. The old
Surly warranty stipulated that stem plus spacers shouldn't exceed 100 mm,
but last year they changed that, and now they say there is no limit on
steerer length. But this is important: with threaded steerers, the size of
the frame determines how high you can get the bars. If you want high bars,
get a big frame. This is the Rivendell way. This advice is completely
worthless with threadless steerers like Surly uses, because all sizes can
have the same handlebar height if you don't cut the steerer. So a 52 cm
frame can theoretically fit exactly the same as a 58 cm frame if the stem
length is long enough to make up the difference. Buying a Surly using the
Riv sizing guideline apples-to-apples is quite likely to result in a bike
 that's on the too-big side.

I will tell you that uncut steerers with a lot of spacers tend to get a
lot of negative commentary. Our Surly floor bikes usually sport this
feature, and everyday somebody asks me to justify it or comments that they
don't like the look. Yet of the bikes that sell, only a small fraction come
back to have the steerer shortened.

Another pet peeve of mine is that quills (in general) come too short. Of

probably can't handle a long quill... But one of the great advantages of a

diminishes the utility of a quill... End of rant.

2014-01-09 Thread Michael
Training for upcoming Metric Century I hope to go on.
Went on the Bleriot.
Rolling hills of Howard County.
~30 degrees and still.
Nice ride.
Salty roads.
Bike felt rally draggy.
I think I am outta shape from not riding much since the cold weather has

Legs were killing me and I was reduced to lamentably slow speeds.
27 miles of pain, but fun and rewarding to do the ride!

Weird, because I just did a long ride with Tony DeFillipo and Co. about two
weeks ago and I felt great.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mixte frame design question

2014-01-09 Thread Pam Ellen Hudson
I will say, as the owner of a double tube mixte custom from Royal H (the
lovelybike frame that was stolen but I got back!). The bike is unusually
flexible at high speeds going downhill. There is quite a bit of flex in the
frame generally. I will test it out with lowered panniers in the next month
and let me know of the results. My frame is simply pristine -- but I had
always been a roadie -- so for me the difference was significant. I think that
makes the mixte frame not the best choice for rando events or touring -- it
does make a good commuter and is good for long rides though.

My thoughts.

The double tubes look nice and from the right builder can be a decent bike.
A lot of those double tubes are very flexible though and not in the planing
sort of way. Riv (and others) single tube down tends to make a stronger bike.

Interestingly, mixte seems to have a clear definition more in the U.S. than
in France. Of the great constructeurs, I've only seen the term mixte used
in the Goéland catalogue. Most speak of vélo dame or similar terms.

Regarding the frame design, the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was invented by A.
Sixt in the 1930s, as a more triangulated design that was intended to make
the frame stiffer than the traditional women's frames with a deeply dropped
or even curved diagonal tube. He also used twin diagonal tubes to stiffen
 tandem frames.

Around 1938, the great constructeur Reyhand developed a more sophisticated
frame design, with a dropped single top tube and two extra seatstays. In
profile, it looks similar to the twin-diagonal-tubed frame. To stiffen the
connection at the center of the frame, the extra stays extend beyond the seat
tube and attach to the diagonal tube as well. André Reiss, the maker of
Reynand, patented this design, as well as a tandem frame with two sets of
diagonal reinforcement stays (one set from the head tube to the rear BB, the
other from the front seat lug to the rear dropouts). After Reiss died in
World War II, the designs were widely copied.

You can see examples of these designs in the Bicycle Quarterly Image
 Archive at

 http://www.bikequarterly.com/color_photo_supplement.html

The twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was much easier to make, and thus remained
popular among mass producers. I don't think Sheldon Brown was even aware of
the second Reyhand type when he coined his definition of mixte, but he was
thinking of women's frames with either a dropped top tube with no extra rear
stays (which puts bending loads on the seat tube and thus offends engineers)
or the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte. More recently, Rivendell inspired its
mixtes on the Reyhand type, but without extending the extra stays beyond
 the seat tube.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Misc. parts for a San Marcos build

2014-01-09 Thread Tim Gavin
Congratulations on your beautiful bike! I just bought a Soma San Marcos
51cm for my girlfriend as a christmas gift, so I have hands-on experience
on this frame.

*Brake reach*:

What size is your San Marcos frame? The brake reach is specific to the
size, and Tiagra sidepulls may, or may not fit.

47, 51cm use 650B wheels and long reach brakes (55-73mm)
Larger sizes use 700C wheels and standard reach brakes (47-57mm)

EXCEPT: the newest production frames, 2013 on, use long reach brakes on
all sizes. I don't know how to tell besides measuring.
(I did speak to someone at Soma, though, and they said the newest run of
frames also has Riv-style mid-blade fork eyelets for a mini rack. I don't
know if this corresponds to the brake reach change).

*Dropout spacing*:

I've successfully spread the dropouts on two older steel frames, by hand,
using the Sheldon Brown 2x4 method. Crude, but it works. (I should
probably take both frames down to the bike co-op to double check alignment,
but they both measure up straight and shift properly).

HOWEVER: The San Marcos has beautiful lugged rear dropouts (seriously, I
haven't seen the like), not skinny old-style ones. This may make it harder
to re-align the dropout if you managed to bend it out of whack when cold
setting.

THAT SAID: You can probably just cram a 135mm wheel in there. Try it!
You can spread the dropouts slightly by hand in order to facilitate. You
won't bend them far enough to deform/cold-set them; you'd have to spread
them much wider to do that, as Ron Mc stated above.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Misc. parts for a San Marcos build

absolutely agree you can elastically spread your rear triangles that far
without concern - my daughter's 126mm Fuji is running 130mm 9-speed rear
axle - we even changed a flat on the trail - no worries.
On my old Raleigh, though, the triangles were stiff enough that it is
pretty taxing to spread them elastically. Just now making the 700c
conversion on the old bike, and I'm excited about the tire options compared
to Pasela, Pasela, Pasela.

The double tubes look nice and from the right builder can be a decent

Interestingly, mixte seems to have a clear definition more in the U.S.
than in France. Of the great constructeurs, I've only seen the term mixte
used in the Goéland catalogue. Most speak of vélo dame or similar terms.

Regarding the frame design, the twin-diagonal-tubed mixte was invented
by A.

More recently, Rivendell
inspired its mixtes on the Reyhand type, but without extending the extra
 stays beyond the seat tube.

justify carrying the extra weight by switiching both tire and tube when
there is a flat which save a good several minutes and allows me to repair
the flat and check for the item that caused it after the ride is done. If I
have to change a flat in the dark, cold or rain or all of the above,
swapping out everything and dealing with it later is the way to go.

[RBW] Tire boots, 650B wheels, spokes

2014-01-09 Thread Joan Oppel
Starting a bit of a new thread: my Bleriot has 650B wheels, and when I've taken it on a tour, I've carried a spare tire (see Sheldon's site for how to fold any tire) and just considered it part of the tour gear. I've also carried a couple of spokes specifically sized for the wheels (front rear). That's for touring, where my calculation is the extra weight of the tire ( spokes, to be completely specific) is worth the peace of mind if I needed it. Yes, you can get anything over night delivered but that could eat up at least one and possibly two days of a tour (Side comment: I've never experienced a cut sidewall in over 6,000 miles on Hetres on awful urban roads, gravel/washboard/rocky roads and unpaved rail trails.)As for tire boots, I cut up an old tire and have a couple of boots in different sizes in my pack with the patch kit. I also have duct tape with me and have used it for various repairs (a small piece of cardboard with a few feet of duct tape wrapped around it - very compact), including wrapping a broken spoke around another spoke for a friend, bandaging a cut (sweaty person, bandaid wouldn't stick), holding a rack together, emergency glasses repair, etc etc -- etc! I do have the FiberFix spoke, have not used it myself, but have watched someone do it. The FiberFix, tire boots, duct tape are in the baggie that serves as my repair kit, along with a couple of plastic tire irons and a spare tube. I've used 26 tubes in my 650B tires several times.Joan

The fix was actually a multi-layered set up. Between the tube and the tire

bulge a bit so I wrapped the whole shebang in duct tape and unnattached the

I've been on more than one of those tours with Joan, and I've also

Thanks for the kind words.

My long term goal for this bike was to convert it to 650b, which would have
moved it from great to fantastic. Really, how many sweet riding 700c
frames can handle 33mm tires, and fenders? With 41 mm tires this would be
a super comfortable bike. I converted my '84 trek and find the combination
of comfort and performance hard to beat. I'm glad somebody is still making
these frames, although I think I will always prefer the standard gauge
tubes.

If no one is interested I'll have to decide whats next, probably break it
up, sell the components, and save the frame for my grandson, who is no more
than a decade away from fitting into it. I'll have new (unused) bars,
stem, levers, shifters, and thumbies; good wheels tires classic brakes
crank to offer.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Misc. parts for a San Marcos build

2014-01-09 Thread PeterG
My San Marcos is a 59cm. Frame looks awesome. I wasn't looking for a new
bike, but the wife got this used in brand new shape. I have a few other
bikes including a Homer, Betty and an old 60's steel. Originally, I was
just gonna sell this San Marcos. Decided may be to build it up if I can
find parts cheap enough. Thanks again for all the info.

On Thursday, January 9, 2014 11:56:37 AM UTC-8, Tim Gavin wrote:

[RBW] Re: WTB: Misc. parts for a San Marcos build

2014-01-09 Thread Dave Johnston
The San Marcos has a very stiff rear triangle. I tried to cold set it to
132 with my bare hands and it didn't budge.

I have turned 135 hubs to 130 by swapping to a wheels manf shorter axle,
removing spacers and redishing. It is pretty easy on older hubs but harder
with the current MTB hubs that have the rubber dust protector.

That's about the highest stepover step-through I've ever seen. Clearly
it's got the straight line look, and the diagatube is effectively raised up
due to the massively tall headtube and the looong chainstays. If you are
6'5 with a bad hip, I wonder if this is going to be a lot easier to mount

The 60cm is a 700c bike. On a related note, the 50cm demo doesn't look
like it has long chainstays. The 50 looks like a Betty Foy with an orange
paint job (not that there's anything wrong with that).

That's about the highest stepover step-through I've ever seen. Clearly
it's got the straight line look, and the diagatube is effectively raised up
due to the massively tall headtube and the looong chainstays. If you are
6'5 with a bad hip, I wonder if this is going to be a lot easier to mount
 than a regular diamond bike.

On the other hand, it looks like this 60cm might have room for a second
water bottle cage in there! The braze-ons are not there, but it looks like
 there's room. ;-)
