[RBW] Sam Owner's - What is the true standover height for size 51 and 55?

[RBW] Re: Time to replace rim on my Quickbeam

2015-03-12 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I have one of the Orange QB's. Those came with Mavic rims. Even though I
ride primarily fixed, I do use the brakes. Mine failed at the eyelet -

https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/4468308813/in/photolist-sdaq9-7NRfx8-5ZGi3A-7NRfBB

Since the original Suzue hub was a little tired, I decided to just have
Rich (handsonwheels.com) build me up a new wheel with a different hub. He
does phenomenal work.

Araya rims are hard to come by these days. Probably a Box type
construction. Velocity Synergy, Atlas or NoBS from their touring line are
all pretty stout. Rich used one of them on mine - the centered type with
eyelets.

Re: [RBW] Re: mafac raid brake

2015-03-12 Thread NickBull
It's not impossible that there was something incorrect in their
installation, but I do have other bikes with DiaComp centerpulls, plus the
usual assortment of sidepulls, V-brakes, cantilever brakes, and disk
brakes, so I think the problem was not installation-related.

The fork I was using was built for 700C and required long-reach Tektro
559's to reach the rims. Then I switched it over to 650B and used some
Tektro cyclo-cross sidepulls which worked fine (they got me through PBP in
2011) but have no quick-release, so they were a pain in the butt. That's
why I switched to the Raid's, on which the pad-holders had to be pushed
right down the bottom of the slot, maximizing the length of the lever arm.
Standing astride the bike, squeezing the brake as hard as I can, and
pushing hard down and forward, I could rock the bike and see the brake arms
flex back and forth several mm at the pad-end. Enough that if I set the
pads parallel to the rim, then under braking force their front tips would
angle upward toward the edge of the tire. So I set the angle pointed
slightly downward so that under braking force with the arms flexed forward,
the pads would be parallel to the rim. The Raid brakes themselves were
bought on EBay from some charity in France that buys old bike parts and
then resells them and donates the proceeds to charity. They were clearly
used, but I would not think that that would make them more flexible, just
more likely to fail. I did replace the red plastic pivot sheaths with
brass ones bought from a guy in Israel, which helped somewhat.

If your Compass centerpulls had been available when I decided to get the
new fork made, I might well have gone with them. But buying NOS Raid's,
plus fancier build requirements to get the Mafac braze-ons correct, was too
daunting so I went the easy, cantilever route. Anyway, for long-reach
centerpulls, braze-ons are the way to go, in my opinion!

I think there was something very wrong with your Raid setup, so I am glad
you are using a better-performing brake now! Being able to stop well is
important, and it's not worth risking an emergency room visit to try and
 save a few dollars.

Your braking problem is difficult to diagnose from a distance, and there
are many variables with bolt-on centerpulls. The interface between the yoke
and the fork crown matters greatly (unlike on a modern sidepull, where the
bolt takes all the load). If the fork crown is shaped in a way that makes
that interface less-than-optimal, it might affect your brake power. For
example, a curved surface, or a raised lip around the hole... That would be
 my first guess.

That is one of the reasons we offer the Compass centerpull brakes only for
braze-on mounting. With dedicated braze-ons, you eliminate any flex at the
fork crown/brake yoke interface, as well as within the brake yoke itself.
As long as you have decent pads and rims, your stopping power and
modulation will be among the best of any brake ever made.

[RBW] Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne

2015-03-12 Thread Mike Shaljian
As someone who rode Mara Supreme 33's for years and switched to Barlow Passes
on my Hillborne, I would emphatically recommend you get Barlow Passes, and get
the extra-lights. I was amazed at how my bike suddenly came alive when I
switched to these, after years of suffering from paranoia that glass would
destroy my tires (problematic in a college town) and that running tires at
maximum pressure made me faster.

I run the Barlows at 38 pounds in the front and 42 in the back and the ride is
terrific, whether on pavement or gravel. I have not gotten a single flat in
several thousand miles of riding these, and I still live in a college town with
devolved children who still like to throw bottles in the street. I think fat,
fast and light is a great combination and I don't think you can get a better
tire than the Compass for predominantly road riding. The Marathons, on the
other hand, are way overbuilt for most people (IMO), and the extra width of
a 38 vs. a 33 will help with flat resistance.

Re: [RBW] Best 2ish allrounder tire?

2015-03-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Scott! Volume matter immensely here, as I need the tire to do
bikepacking on root, rocky trails. and the wider race tires with side
knobbies, as Jim M. mentioned, have increased slippage on the roots.

Jim W., excellent point on the Big Ben's I may give them a shot. How do
they handle wet roots and loose gravel trails combined with rock bouncing
and jouncing (loose-ish gravel in-between? Riv describes the Smart Sam as
doesn't suck on pavement and I imagine the Big ben equally doesn't suck
on trails -- and since most of my riding (by time anyway) is trails and
dirt roads, the Smart Sam's likely win that battle.

I may be looking for El Dorado here. Sardonic grin.

Agreed on the WTB Nano's. It has a center-tread that makes it ride almost

trails no problem. I've got the 2.1's in the Atlantis and my Dad rides the

[RBW] Re: Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne

2015-03-12 Thread Darin G.
I have 38ish Marathon Supremes on my Atlantis for commuting mounted on 36
hole XT/Mavic A719 rims. I've also run JB Blues on there and on my 56
Hillborne on the same rim. There's clearly a comfort difference with the
bigger rubber and they are a little slower to spin up, but it doesn't seem
to matter much when I've got a saddlebag and a front bag. I like the fact
that it feels bombproof and my mind is free from worry about potholes and
punctures on my commutes, but short of touring and commuting I think they
are overkill. My go-fast bike is a Romulus and In November I replaced the
Ruffy Tuffys with the regular Stampede Pass and I noticed a dramatic
improvement in comfort and performance. One flat at about 400 miles
(glass). If the difference between the Mondials and the Barlow Pass is at
all similar, and I don't see why it wouldn't be you would be very pleased
with the Barlow Pass. Love Compass tires, they are the cat's pajamas.

I can't afford to do too much experimenting when it comes to bikes and

sturdy/heavy, 36h ones have 700x40 Schwalbe Mondials that I use for
commuting, trails and all around town riding. Now I get to leverage my
birthday to finally get tires for the lighter 32 hole XT/Synergy wheels. I
wanted to set them up to turn the Sam into my only go-fastish road bike for
summer riding. I think I have it narrowed down to either 700x35 or 700x32
Marathon Supremes or Compass Stampede Pass (700x32). I was leaning toward
the Supreme 32's to be a big difference from the beefy Mondials but, after
reading Jan's articles on tire size and pressure I started to think Supreme
35's might be a better choice. The reason I lean toward the Schwalbes is
that I've had a long, very positive and almost flatless history with
Schwalbe. Of course this wouldn't be a dilemma if I could just talk my
wife into buying me the Rodeo in the web specials!

Since the Rodeo is not to be, I'd appreciate any guidance for a blissful,
light-ish, go fast-ish road riding summer spent on the Hillborne.

 Thanks,
 John

I'm considering trying some VO stainless 60mm fenders for 26 wheels

going from 26 to 20 would require a delta radius of around 3!

Does anyone know of any wider fenders that will work with 55 and even
 60mm wide 20 tires?

I'm considering trying some VO stainless 60mm fenders for 26 wheels and
re-radiusing them for 20 wheels, which will widen them significantly, but
I've only ever done this for using 700C fenders on 650B applications, where
the delta radius was only about an inch, and it's very easy. But going from
26 to 20 would require a delta radius of around 3!

Does anyone know of any wider fenders that will work with 55 and even
 60mm wide 20 tires?

I have a Nitto M13 with 5mm threaded eyelets for a traditional flashlight
mount. I intend to retap one for M6 and use the Sheldon nut trick for the
hanging Edelux. If the eyelet is fairly thick, there will be enough metal
left for the eyelet to be suffficiently strong. If the eyelet is too thin,
tapping to M6 may remove too much metal.

[RBW] FS: Schwalbe Dureme 700x50

2015-03-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
$100 shipped CONUS. Please contact off list. Thank you for looking!

These have 3/4 of their life left and have seen a lot of adventure, as I used
them to ride sections of the Great Divide MTB trail as well as single track.
Sold as is, but the tires are in good usable condition.

The Dureme has all the anti-puncture bells and whistles Schwalbe offered a
couple of years ago and these sold for $90/each new.

In the photo, the right tire is the rear, the left the front, so you may want
to start by reversing them.

[RBW] Re: Getting comfortable on the Noodle

2015-03-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
Not a noodle, but I shifted from Albatross to Albastache (so a less extreme
shift?) and the love affair was instant and long lasting. Long rides, short
rides, road, single track, steep climbs, steep descents, it is luscious. It
felt that way even though I still have a fair bit of dialing in to do with
height and angle.

Not that it matters for you as you likely don't have vertigo, but my
vertigo and drops did not get along at all in the 10 second ride I gave
them when noodles came with my new-to-me QB. So that was a case of instant
no-go. I tried the Albatross bars for several years trying to make it work.
My take is if you have to try, beyond obvious height and angle and reach
adjustments, then move on to the next bar. May I recommend the Albastache?
Nothing need change from the drops, unless you want a slightly longer stem,
but that can be worked out when you know if you like them.

Patrick

In trying to separate my two main rides a bit more, I switched out albas
for noodles on my Sam this winter. At first, the outside of my left
shoulder was sore and it just felt all wrong. Not that surprising, since I
had been on albas or other swept back handlebars everyday for the last 7-8
years. After a couple of hundred miles they are feeling pretty comfy and
the shoulder discomfort is gone. I am planning on giving it a year before
I decide again. I don't love the drag of a cockpit swap like many on this
list do!
For reference, my other bike is a Rmid-70's Raleigh Sprite, fixed gear with
the original, city bars.

Re: [RBW] Best 2ish allrounder tire?

2015-03-12 Thread Mark Reimer
I haven't, but also consider that so far as I can tell, the Nano is quite a
bit lighter of a tire weight-wise, comes without a wire bead (plus in my
books), and has a less aggressive tread than the smart sam (better on
pavement). It's a very popular tire in the tour divide. I love 'em. I also
have never ridden a smart sam though.

Anyone ridden both the Nano and the Smart Sam and can compare? I keep
coming back to the three possible solutions being:

-- Dream: Sam and AHH dedicated geared country bike
-- Too much labor, not realistic: swap tires as needed (I know about wheel
sets, but that also seems unlikely from those who have them, they just
 don't shift.
-- Ride what I have now and it's a pretty good all round solution, with
trail heavy emphasis: Hunqapillar and Smart Sams.

Option three is the winner, at least until the dream can happen! Thank you
all for helping me play with the possibilities. Now if only my brain would
cooperate and I could ride instead of scheme. Sardonic grin.

[RBW] Getting comfortable on the Noodle

2015-03-12 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
If the hoods feel like a reach, maybe you need a shorter stem. I usually can
tell right away if a bar setup will work for me. I ride noodles on my 63
Hilsen, with a 10cm Technomic, a little above seat height, and it's perfect.
I've ridden it thousands of miles. I got a 63cm Roadeo, set it up with a 10cm
Tallux and Mark's bars and felt like you do, a little over reached for the
hoods. I switched to a dirt drop stem which was much better but I had it
slammed down so could not lower the bars. Finally found a 6cm Technomic and it
is the ticket. The bike fits great now. I would give your current cockpit a
couple more rides then maybe consider a stem switch. BTW, I prefer the Noodles
to the Mark's Bar.

Re: [RBW] Getting comfortable on the Noodle

2015-03-12 Thread Eric Norris
Wow. Handlebar setup is such a person-specific issue, and it's very hard in my
experience to transfer one rider's ideal setup to another rider. However, here
are my thoughts (YMMV) ...

I've been more susceptible to hand/arm problems since my first PBP (done in
2007 on a Quickbeam equipped with Noodle bars). I ride several bikes with
slightly different bar/hood setups, and I've learned a few things that work for
me:

-- I've stopped wearing padded gloves and started wearing thin, full-finger
gloves--or no gloves at all. My hands seem to get tired faster when I'm
grabbing onto a fatter bar/hood combo, and the padding in most cycling gloves
makes this worse.

-- I try to keep the overall diameter of what I'm holding onto as small as
possible. I use regular padded tape, but no extra padding. My hands also feel
more comfortable on older-style brake hoods (Campy Record, Mafac) that are
narrower and easier to fit my hands around than newer models (Campy Ergopower).

-- While conventional wisdom suggests setting up a long, flat platform for my
hands (extending the top of the bars with the brake hoods), I've found that a
more traditional setup with the hoods lower than the tops of the bars works
better for me. Here's a photo of my Motobecane, which is very comfortable to
ride, compared with the 1939 Raleigh that Tommy Godwin used to set the world
record for most miles ridden in a year: http://flic.kr/p/pVjx8c My new Alex
Singer is set up much the same, and is working very well so far:
http://flic.kr/p/qMeY3b

Give the Noodle bars a try, and don't be afraid to move things around. Keeping
your hands happy is very important, and worth getting right.

[RBW] Re: Getting comfortable on the Noodle

2015-03-12 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
Always tough to peer through the computer screen to set up another guy's
bike, but, some responses

- I dislike Noodles, and can't get comfortable on them. Tried three times
and punted. I'm now transitioning pretty much all of the fleet to SOMA Hwy
One, which design offers a couple of possible advantages for you,
including, I believe, shorter ramps.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/pbridge1300/16126988157/
- You're already set up far more upright and less reachy than I prefer, so
I'm a bit surprised that you're having reach issues, but there it is. Is
your saddle flat? If so, you may need to tilt it back a bit, nose up, to
rotate your pelvis and center of gravity back. How comfortable are you on
your saddle in general?
- How's your overall core and arm strength?
- Yes, cheap and easy answer, you sound like a candidate for upright bars.
Doesn't sound like you use the drops anyway? Might need to think about
saddle as well, at least I need a wider saddle on an upright bike than I do
on a drop bike.
- Yes, you absolutely might have to get used to lots of things on a
bike. No matter how relaxed the position is, it isn't a La-Z-Boy
recliner. I make lots of small adjustments to my position over the course
of a riding season, both to bars and to saddle. Our bodies change, and on
any given day we are more or less fit, we are more or less tired, etc.

2015-03-12 Thread Scott Henry
With shoulder pain, are you sure the bars aren't too wide?
That is the first thing I thought of seeing you said 5'8 and a 46cm bar.

But yes, a shorter stem might help too.

For new bars, I usually try to wear gloves and forego tape for the
first week or so. Lots of variables to try before setting things in
with the tape.

Good luck

installed the Noodle on a 9cm Tallux stem that's currently at its max height
(about 2 above saddle height). The noodle itself is setup in the way
described on Riv's page, with a pretty flat ramp extended by the brake
hoods. On a 20 mile ride yesterday I found my shoulder blades feeling
tension, and found myself alternating between the ramps and the top of the
bar, with the hoods feeling like they were really a reach. Am I describing
a typical feeling/riding experience on Noodles, or do I just have
proportions that may be better suited for the more upright riding style of
Albatrosses? It certainly seems like I shouldn't have to get used to a bar
before feeling comfortable, but am looking for your experienced input on
making a switch from upright to drops.

 Thanks!

My sister is trying to sell her Specialized mountain bike and I am

She bought it, rode it twice, and it has been sitting in her garage for

Also, the tires look to be in good shape , but is it safe to ride tires

[RBW] Re: Getting comfortable on the Noodle

2015-03-12 Thread WETH
Dave,
There is much good advice here already. My main bikes are a 58cm LHT with
Albatross and a 56 Atlantis with noodles. The Surly set up came first, and
I had discovered a sweet spot up in the bends of the Albatross for comfort
on longer and faster rides. When I set up the noodles on the Atlantis, I
took measurements first of the Surly with Albatross bars (bar height
relative to saddle, distance to saddle, etc). I then set up the Atlantis so
that the position of my hands on the brake hoods was the same distance to
the bends on the Albatross bars. To get the reach right, I used a dirt
drop stem with the noodles.
All the best,
Erl

On Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 12:53:52 PM UTC-4, Tim wrote:

If the hoods feel like a reach, maybe you need a shorter stem. I usually
can tell right away if a bar setup will work for me. I ride noodles on my
63 Hilsen, with a 10cm Technomic, a little above seat height, and it's
perfect. I've ridden it thousands of miles. I got a 63cm Roadeo, set it up
with a 10cm Tallux and Mark's bars and felt like you do, a little over
reached for the hoods. I switched to a dirt drop stem which was much better
but I had it slammed down so could not lower the bars. Finally found a 6cm
Technomic and it is the ticket. The bike fits great now. I would give your
current cockpit a couple more rides then maybe consider a stem switch. BTW,
I prefer the Noodles to the Mark's Bar.

2015-03-12 Thread John
For this kind of riding around the SF Bay Area, Clement MSO's, WTB Nano's
BG's Rock 'n' Roads (in order of increasing amounts of dirt traction) are
popular, but I know only the Nano is available in the 2 inch range.

We did this kind of riding a lot as kids further south back where we had a
lot more unpaved county roads, mostly covered in decomposed granite or
hard, sandy dirt. We liked a slight tread that rode fast on the roads, and
then you used your skills rather than tread on the horse deer trails. But
if I remember right, staging spectacular crashes into huckleberry bushes
was probably the point of all this a lot of the time, and probably not what
you're after.

Schwalbe Thunder Burts Furious Freds might me more options for you in the
2in - 29er range.

Concur, nothing special. I think it's a '99 Hardrock, according to
Bikepedia.com
http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=1999Brand=SpecializedModel=HardrockType=bike,
about $290 new.

That said, it looks like a versatile, decent bike for getting around town.
It's a steel MTB with a rigid fork, so you can do a lot with it.

Tires and tubes this old should be OK if they hold air, but I'd caution the
buyer that they may need replaced soon. UV damage dries up old tires, but
these were stored indoors.

I'd price it around $150-$175 since it's in perfect condition, and take
$125 if the buyer is polite.

I don't get that comment about wheel sets. I have multiple wheels for most

I am a huge proponent of multiple wheelsets. I have two wheelsets on two
different bikes that I swap, and have zero problem shifting between them.
One set is disc brakes which is really easy (swapping between 700X40C and
650X50B). On the rim brake wheelsets, I just make sure the outside rim
width is the same on both (23mm) so I don't have to adjust brakes. Swapping
tires on the other hand just doesn't happen.

I've just left a frame and fork with Ed Litton for some braze-on work. I

braze-on. I'm having 5 braze-ons put on the fork (which had none). 2 at
the fork tips, 2 mid fork, and one under the crown for a fender. So
that'll be $100 on the fork, and I'll still have to go get it powdercoated.
At that price, the Simple One fork is a super bargain. It features 6

[RBW] frame repair in Chicago

2015-03-12 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi, all.

I've done a stupid thing and the upshot is that my kickstand plate on a
Hillborne is separating from the stays. Does anyone here know who in the
Chicagoland area (I live in the western suburbs; closer to me would
obviously be great) would be able to remove/repair/replace my kickstand
plate? Any ideas as to how much any of those options might cost? Any
thoughts whether any re-painting of the frame could be limited to the
kickstand plate area (plate, stays, BB shell)?

Fortunately, I can still ride the bike right now. But of course I'd rather
have a healthy, hearty, hale Hillborne.

Possible option - cut it/grind it/remove it, touch up the paint so as to
avoid a re-paint, and carry out the brazing work at some point down the
road when you're actually ready for paint? Assuming you're not ready for
paint yet?

Just an idea.

Under that model, it also shouldn't be necessary to disassemble the whole
bike. Plus general quickness.

[RBW] Re: frame repair in Chicago

2015-03-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
I don't know who the frame repair guys are in Chicago, but I'd guess that
removing, repairing or replacing a kickstand plate would almost certainly
be under $50. That's assuming the obvious that you are going to hand the
frame builder person a bare frame. You will have taken everything off of
it so he can do his work. Once the repair is done, the paint will
definitely be cooked in the vicinity. Rattle-can it with primer before you
rebuild it, and you'll be good to go. Or go get it powdercoated for about
$150.

Pictures would help explain too.
Do you use a kickstand?

If it was me, I would cut away as much of the kickstand plate as I could
with a hacksaw, Drexel, etc, and then grind/ file the remnants until there
was nothing left. Hit it with some primer and touch up paint and get back
to riding. The chain stay bridge is not strictly necessary.

You can still use a kickstand by installing it the normal way, with the two
plates and that big bolt.

If you decide to get a full repaint at some point, you can decide to either
get a new bridge, or kickstand plate, or leave it alone.

[RBW] Re: Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv

2015-03-12 Thread Surlyprof
My wife is not the avid cyclist I wish she would be but she does love to do
the grocery shopping and other errands by bike rather than car which is
great. The best I could do was to get her to finally ditch her aluminum
Fuji (with shock forks and shock seat to dampen the harsh ride) for a
Public mixte. Even then it was only because it was discounted below $500.
She was amazed at the difference a steel bike makes. Overall, they are not
bad bikes for what they are but I would love to get her on a Cheviot or
Clementine or even a SOMA Buena Vista. Not going to happen. But, who am I
to question her love of that (very) bright orange Public mixte? As long
as it makes for happy riding around the area, we'll get to share that time
together and the hilly distance stuff will remain my zen time. If I was
to do that purchase over again, I would have tried to steer her toward
Brooklyn Bikes. I'm intrigued as to what influence Grant had on their
designs. That said, their matte black and red alternatives probably
wouldn't get her to give up her happy orange Public. To quote others on
this discussion, the heart wants what it wants.

[RBW] Re: Tips for using the Minoura Repair Stand?

2015-03-12 Thread Leslie
I don't have a lot of seatpost showing, so I was clamping on the toptube
sometimes, but that doesn't work if adjusting the rear brake cable, so, I'd
sometimes clamp on the seat tube. Wish I hadn't: the frame is fine, but,
the seattube decal is a little bit marred because of it.:/Lesson
learned.

I guess I'm an outlier here. Both my Saluki and Trek have the Carradice

about decals; I don't think that stand would damage paint.

Seconds on being careful with the legs and QR which holds them. Other

[RBW] Re: Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne

2015-03-12 Thread Pondero
My experience is like so many others already provided. I recently
installed Barlow Pass extra lights on my Quickbeam fixed-wheel bike. I
needed to switch the rear cog to compensate for the additional speed. My
prior tire was just as wide, but these tires are noticeably more
comfortable...and they have that delightful high pitched hum.

[RBW] Re: Tips for using the Minoura Repair Stand?

2015-03-12 Thread Garth

I too have always attached the clamp to the frame for decades without any
ill effects . Just use some sense, like don't over clamp with force, and
if you're concerned with double butted tubes being too thin in the middle,
clamp near the lugs instead. A Hunqa frame has no concern about that .

Parallel TT's make for a great place to clamp btw, as well as a great
carrying handle ;)
