I am just shy of 300, so should I consider one model over another? I

I have a Bombadil, and it's solid under me; I'm currently running Rumpkins
on it, and they're the smallest tire I'd run, bigger would be good; I've
run NeoMotos on it before, too.
The Hunqapillar would be just as solid. An Atlantis would also be fine,
too.

But, I also have a Rom and a Ram. I don't load them down:
The Ram, I converted to 650b and run Hetres on it (~42mm), has a pair of
Acorns on it, a rando box on the front and a saddle bag on the back, so I
can carry tools, tube, a jacket, etc.; no panniers, or heavy loads.
The Rom, I run it naked except for a tool-roll, and have it running MSO's
(700c / 40mm) as more of a gravel-grinder. (Have a small front rack I could
put on it, have considered a rando box for it, too...)
So, none of them are running skinny tires. They're fine, but, they were
intended for people smaller than me.

What's your intended use? Just looking for a 'road bike'? A Sam or a
Hilsen might work okay for you, They wouldn't be as stout as the Atlantis
or the Hunq, but it could do it. But the Atlantis and the Hunq would be
fine at that too, and can take more, if you wanted to load them up more.
The Clem looks like it'd be a great choice too, but, it'll be awhile before
it gets here.

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
One thing to consider is that owning a Rivendell is different than owning
any other bike in my experience of one. On a Rivendell you can think you
wanted a road bike and possibly get a Hillsen. But something magical
happens as you ride roads. A Rivendell enhances our senses so we can hear
the back roads and trails calling out to us. Pass a dirt road and the beast
pauses a crank, dips and tilts her head, longing to answer the siren's call.

You will find you ride more terrain that you realized you wanted to. It
will be astonishingly fun. You may even want to try that whacky S24O
camping thing. After all it's one night and great adventure can happen in
one night, down those beckoning roads and trails. So my suggestion is what
Grant guided me toward, without actually saying it. Get a bike that you can
ride the roads just fine with and that can handle the rough and loaded
stuff too. If you end up needing a road specific bike after that, that
means you are riding a lot and what a grand success to be enjoying a bike
so much you need another! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Spring Break Microtour

2015-03-26 Thread WETH
Eric, thanks. One day I hope to undertake a longer tour with my family. In
the meantime, like Patrick wisely stated, I will take it a day at a time and
hope that small tours build an appreciation for cycling and a desire for a
longer tour. In the end, I know we are making great memories together and am
grateful.
Patrick, thanks for your words; I am inspired by your frequent outings.
Howard, I should have photographed you and your blue Ram. I liked your orange
helmet, too. I may have to get something similar as I discovered mine has
developed a cracked.
Steve, as the weather warms let me know if you want to ride one weekend day;
nothing fast, just a leisurely ramble. I enjoyed meeting you last week and
seeing your lovely Bleriot; the first I had seen in person.
All the best,
Erl

[RBW] The aftermath of my recent car vs. bike hit and run.

2015-03-26 Thread Lynne Fitz
I will speak from actual experience, although the driver stopped. My Bleriot
was crunched:
http://lynnerides.blogspot.com/2013/01/well-this-year-started-off-with-bang.html

A framebuilder friend of mine said it was repairable. I'd have sent it to him,
but his lead time was pretty long. I called Rivendell, to see what they
thought. They sent me off to Steve Rex, sold me a new fork, sent the new
decals to Steve, and eventually I got to pick a new frame color. I am on the
West Coast.

And here it is, better than new:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/lynnefitz/sets/72157634204220895/

Bilenky did the original installation of the couplers, back in 2007; I'd
recommend them as well.

I hope you mend quickly and without complications.

[RBW] Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread DSat

Anyone can compare the two that has had experience with one or both?
What's different? What's the same? Ride the same? Ride different? One
heavier vs one lighter? One more upright than the other? I know the Clem
is designed for swept back bars such as the Alba's or Bosco. I know the
Hunq would be 700 tires vs 650 for the Clem. I know the Clem has longer
chainstays. What would be the reason to spend the extra $$$ for the Hunq
over the Clem?
I am talking the Hunq 54 vs the Clem 52 (though that probably don't matter)

Any input appreciated.

I agree with the cycling/baseball cap endorsements. Also, wanted to give a
shout out to button down shirts or anything with collars- because if you
raise the collars, they can protect back of your neck. Or you can use a wet

peace of mind is a valuable thing. i am not over 200#, but i opted for a
hunqapillar because i didnt want to worry about loading it up or taking it
only on a certain type of terrain. l think the atlantis would've given the
same assurance, and likely any riv model would do what i need it to do.
You could probably find a totally valid road bike of acceptable stoutness
relatively cheap and easily. with rivendell, you get the, relatively rare,
option to get something weight/bomb proof, if that's a priority.

[RBW] Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Mike Shaljian
I don't feel slow on it. I'm not quite ready to go full heavy upright long
chainstay crazy big tired out yet.

I plan to post a detailed comparison of my new Jones Plus with the Sam
Hillborne I've had since 2012, but I can say briefly that a bike can be
long/stout and fast. I have much respect for and lots of happy riding with
Grant's designs, but I swear Jeff Jones is a goddamn genius. I was blown away
by how fast the plus is on the road with 60mm Super Motos and it was a nimble
beast in my first-ever singletrack outing.

Haven't done any timed comparisons on my gravel loops, but I would estimate I
can easily trim my time by 10%, riding at the same effort on the Jones vs. the
Sam, due to I think both the 50% fatter tire and Jeff Jones Geometry Voodoo
Magic. I know this is a Rivendell forum, but man, the fun factor on a Jones
just from the expanded capability has to be ridden to be believed. 29+ has the
makings of the next big thing and I think a lot of Rivendell people would be
interested in this type of bike. Jeff Jones is your man!

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread Zack
First, and most importantly, talk to the guys at Riv about any and all
sizing and weight/height issues. They will not ever steer you wrong. If
you aren't near enough to SF to visit Walnut Creek, follow the instructions
explicitly for measuring your PBH. At Riv, if the best option is the
cheapest option, they will tell you so. It's a different buying experience
than at 99% of the places you buy things in the world. They are awesome,
they will help you, and that is good. You won't get any pressure sales
tactics, I would say it's more like talking with a genius friend about what
might work best for your situation.

Next: I am 6'3, of varying weights depending on how many pizzas donuts and
carrot cakes i am consuming at any given time, from about 215 to 250. I
have a Sam and a Hunq. Both are most excellent bikes. I just got back
from a camping overnight on the Sam, loaded up, and it was totally fine. I
have the 64 cm double top tube. I don't ever think about putting too much
stuff on the Sam. I certainly don't think about it on the Hunq. I took
the Sam because it currently has fenders on it and the Hunq doesn't. The
Sam rides better when there is less stuff on it (but is still eminently
rideable when carrying a load), the Hunq feels better when it's loaded up,
but is still fun to ride when it isn't!

[RBW] Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread drew beckmeyer
So I have a 54 hunq and my fiancé got the 46 Clem prototype. I can't reeaaallly
speak to ride because I don't fit the 46. But here are my observations.
Weight-similar
Stoutness-similar
Ride- hunq is potentially more aggressive. Could be a roadish bike with the
right cockpit and wheels...though there are better options for that...but it
has that capability. Feels faster.
The Clem is a much more laid back, cruiserish, town bike. Upright is way
upright. Stays are extra long. I think it could handle anything, but it wont be
quick doing those things.
Clearances- easier on the Clem, but similar

We love both of these bikes dearly. The hunqapillar was bought before the
Clem's existed, but For me, having a us made, fully lugged frame was somewhat
important. I prefer the geometry of the hunq coupled with the toughness. I
don't feel slow on it. I'm not quite ready to go full heavy upright long
chainstay crazy big tired out yet.
For the fiancé, she doesn't care about road bikes, geometry, clearances etc.
she wants a bike that can do what mine does, that she will be comfortable on,
will last, looks good, and doesn't cost, to her, an obscene amount of money.
Not to imply that caring about those things precludes you from wanting a Clem.

2015-03-26 Thread murphyjrfk
David,

I have no recommendation of repairing. And I'm sure that all of the above
mentioned can handle it perfectly.

Just writing to say-glad you are ok and wish you a speedy and happy recovery.
Bikes are much easier to rebuild than bodies. Take your time and I'm sure you
will be in all our thoughts!

Best of luck.

[RBW] The aftermath of my recent car vs. bike hit and run.

Anyone have someone (east coast) qualifies to replace bent seat stays?
Worth sending back to RBW to let them handle the repairs? This is the bike
I consider most likely to carry me through the rest of my life. I am not
yet ready to give up on it.

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread Geir Bentzen
I'm 6' 2 and bought a 62 cm Hunqapillar last year when my weight was at
241. I have 50 mm tires. It doesn't feel heavy at all and fits me great. I
have 48 cm Noodles handlebars and Grip King pedals. I talked with Jared
when I put the order in and he didn't want to sell me the Sam Hillborne I
originally called about when he heard my weight. I have never regretted
listening to his advise. I have other bikes, but I have hardly used them at
all since the Hunqapillar arrived.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Leslie
There used to be a write-up on RBW's site that was a comparison between the
Sam Hillborne and the A Homer Hilsen.Something to the effect that, the
Hillborne is 80, maybe 90% of the bike that the Hilsen is, at half the
cost. Gave a lot of details on what that extra was getting you.

While not exactly the same, this is a similar situation.Maybe, the Clem
is functionally 90% of a Hunqapillar. But, there's going to be
differences. For one, the Clem does have some welded tubing, whereas the
Hunq would have lugs there instead. (The Clem does have some lugs, like
the seat lug, but, not as many as a Hunq.)The Clem will use
less-expensive tubing. Not bad tubing by any means, but less costly. The
Clem is being built in Taiwan, not in the US. The Hunq is a two-color
paint. Aesthetics is a large part of the difference. A Hunq, you can
build up however you like: as a road bike w/ drops if you wish, or as a
bullmouse-MTB, or as a townie. The Clem will push you into using it more
as a townie bike, I think, but, maybe not I'm sure it's versatile, too
(I've not seen drops on one yet, tho'...).

Either will be good.

is designed for swept back bars such as the Alba's or Bosco. I know the
Hunq would be 700 tires vs 650 for the Clem. I know the Clem has longer
chainstays. What would be the reason to spend the extra $$$ for the Hunq
 over the Clem?
I am talking the Hunq 54 vs the Clem 52 (though that probably don't matter)

 Any input appreciated.

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread Amit Singh
I'm currently at 230lbs, 6'6.

I ride a Quickbeam, A. Homer Hilsen, Atlantis and Bombadil.

BombaLove doesn't come alive until either on dirt with some knobbies or
until loaded down with 60lbs of gear. It's such a great bike.

Atlantis is like A. Homer - has that magical Riv ride, feels like I can
ride all day and takes fatties. It's currently set up as a ride around town
errand bike. I love it.

A. Homer is my fast bike, set up with 38mm tires and fenders, I've been
pushing 18-21mph riding next to a racer friend turned randonneur with it.
Comfortable and fast and smooth, especially on descents. When I first rode
it I thought it had 90% the speed of my DeRosa, just way more predictable
and smooth. Amazing bicycle. My first experience with Riv was with the AHH.

Quickbeam. What a sweet ride. I love this thing and sometimes wish for more
gears so I could ride faster. But I am so happy with its simplicity that
well, it's the perfect ride.

I've ridden all of these bicycles at 270/275. I ride the largest frames and
have no problem with any of them.

Sometimes when I ride a lot and get strong and channel my inner columbian
to ride up hills with gusto I can feel A Homer plane. It is a good
feeling and so I push harder. I also took the Atlantis camping, loaded it
up with around 80 pounds of stuff. It felt a little noodly ... which
surprised me at first, but after a few minutes riding I did not mind the
feeling and kept riding.

These bicycles are overbuilt and made with love for the longest of
journeys. Your selections are great. Based on your requirements and your
flexibility issues I think a Cheviot would be perfect for you.

The best thing you can do, however, is pick up the phone and call Riv. The
entire team is wonderful to work with and they will bend over backwards to
make sure that you are happy.

Good luck and let us know which bike you decide to go with. Remember,
pictures prove it happened. So make sure to take some photos and share them!

There is definitely a point when lack of care shortens the life of a bike

have the 64 cm double top tube.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Wayne Naha
I am trying to decide if the Clem is the right bike for me, so I'm really
interested in this discussion. From what I've read on this board, there is
a developing consensus that the Clem is going to be slow. Might I ask,
in the spirit of really wanting to know, how those of you who have come to
this conclusion did so? Is it he long chain stays? Because I don't
understand how that would work. I know the conventional wisdom says that
long stays are slow, but is that really true? Can a slightly longer
wheelbase really be inherently slower?
Also, in terms of ride, what is meant be more aggressive or less
aggressive? What properties of the frame contribute to this? The seat
tube and head tube angles on the Clem look pretty identical to those of the
Clem. A person I spoke to at Riv told me that the 52cm Clem has a 59m top
tube, like the 54cm Hunq.
I really want to like this bike, but a slow, heavy bike would be indeed a
tough bike to love. The blug says Clem can do touring, trails, and towny
stuff. But plodding along the trails does not sound fun.
I ask the questions with all respect. I am not trying to be snarky, but am
trying to get solid information on which to base a purchasing decision. It
would be so much simpler just to go to the Riv store and hop on a Clem, but
I am across the continent from them. I spoke with Keven at length just
recently, but input from the group seems relevant and important, too.

On Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 2:36:50 PM UTC-4, drew beckmeyer wrote:

reeaaallly speak to ride because I don't fit the 46. But here are my
 observations.
 Weight-similar
 Stoutness-similar
Ride- hunq is potentially more aggressive. Could be a roadish bike with
the right cockpit and wheels...though there are better options for
that...but it has that capability. Feels faster.
The Clem is a much more laid back, cruiserish, town bike. Upright is way
upright. Stays are extra long. I think it could handle anything, but it
wont be quick doing those things.
Clearances- easier on the Clem, but similar

We love both of these bikes dearly. The hunqapillar was bought before the
Clem's existed, but For me, having a us made, fully lugged frame was
somewhat important. I prefer the geometry of the hunq coupled with the
toughness. I don't feel slow on it. I'm not quite ready to go full heavy
upright long chainstay crazy big tired out yet.
For the fiancé, she doesn't care about road bikes, geometry, clearances
etc. she wants a bike that can do what mine does, that she will be
comfortable on, will last, looks good, and doesn't cost, to her, an obscene
amount of money. Not to imply that caring about those things precludes you
 from wanting a Clem.

Funny you mention that, as this thread made me think of what was likely the

think the listing promoted it as the world's only beater Vanilla and it
certainly looked the part.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
If I buy a Clem, I guarantee it will be slow. Because when I got on the
Clem, I smiled, exhaled, and relaxed. Then I smiled some more, and pedaled
slow. I suppose a rider incapable of relaxing might ride a Clem fast. I
suppose a rider determined to be fast may be able to resist the soothing
charms of the Clem and ride fast in spite of them. I don't know of a
single objective measurable frame attribute that causally forces me to
relax and ride slowly, but if there is one, the Clem has that. The Clem
did not strike me as inefficient. The Clem is exceedingly easy to ride,
almost effortless. I didn't feel like pedalling hard. I didn't feel like
mashing. I felt like riding.

On Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 3:15:02 PM UTC-7, Wayne Naha wrote:

I am not trying to be snarky, but
am trying to get solid information on which to base a purchasing decision.
It would be so much simpler just to go to the Riv store and hop on a Clem,
but I am across the continent from them. I spoke with Keven at length just
recently, but input from the group seems relevant and important, too.

During the cold and snowy days of January, my wife and I thought a multi-day
bike tour with our middle school aged sons would be a fun way to spend spring
vacation. Unfortunately weather during the last full week of March in the
Washington, DC area can be quite unpredictable. A cold and damp forecast
nixed the idea of spending a few days riding at the Delaware and Maryland
seashore. Since we live in the midst of a wonderful network of trails, we
settled on a micro tour (a s36o - credit card style to a motel- if you will).
The only questions were: How far could we and the boys ride after a winter
of little riding? Would the weather give us a 48 hour window of reasonably
dry and not too cold temperatures? (Other commitments crept in and limited
us to two days of adventure.)

We departed Tuesday morning around 11am after waiting for the temperature to
rise into the mid 30s. We recruited a third teenager, a family friend who
had ridden the GAP trail with us last summer. Our first stop was Bethesda,
MD. Despite only having biked 6 miles from our house and temperatures in the
upper 30s, the boys wanted ice cream. I opted for a hot cup of coffee.
Departing Bethesda we rode 8 miles on the Capital Crescent Trail which
gradually descends into Washington, DC; we found a good pizza place on the
waterfront in Georgetown. Despite temperatures still only in the upper 30s,
the boys enjoyed a second ice cream before we crossed the Key Bridge into
Virginia. I always experience a bit of awe crossing the Key Bridge. From
its span you can take in the beauty of Georgetown, the Potomac River, the
Kennedy Center and the Washington Monument.

I knew we had a climb, but I was not prepared for the steepness and length of
the first climb on the Custis Trail
(http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/custis.htm) as it passes the Key Bridge
Marriott. After four hilly miles the Custis trail connects to the WOD
 Trail (http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/wad.htm) The boys experienced
several drivetrain mishaps on this stretch. My adolescent sons do not shift
with much finese or forethought. So I tended to several dropped chains and
one chain wedged between the smallest cassette cog and the frame (not sure
how that happened as I could not make it happen again after freeing the
chain). I wasn't complaining as these stops provided me with needed rests
 from the hills.

Once on the WOD we had a lovely ride through the Virginia suburbs. Without
leaves on the trees, the view into the neighborhoods is expansive and
interesting. After Vienna, VA the trail takes on a slightly rural feel as it
heads toward Reston. Between Vienna and Reston, an approaching cyclist
called out my name. I enjoyed catching up briefly with Howard who was
commuting home on his gorgeous Rambouilliet.

The goal had been to ride to Leesburg, but the late start, dropped chains,
ice cream eating and leisurely pace left us running out of daylight. After
37 total miles of riding we found a motel in Herndon, VA and ate a fine meal
at an Outback Steakhouse next door.

Wednesday morning was damp and cold; we delayed our departure until 10am.
Just a few sprinkles remained, and we enjoyed a brisk ride back to Vienna for
breakfast. The weather warmed slowly, and we had a great time retracing
yesterday's route home. The Custis trail was much easier coming the other
direction, toward the Key Bridge, and we had no drivetrain problems. Over
the final miles, my wife and I agreed that we were glad we went ahead with
the trip. The colder temperatures had given us doubts. Most importantly the
boys had a great time! I so enjoy enjoy seeing my sons cycling ahead of me
 as we pedal along.

One of the boys rode my 1977 Motobecane Super Mirage on which I installed
Soma Sparrow bars. I was unnecessarily concerned about the original 27 inch
wheelset surviving a teenage boy. The only casualty was the Motobecane's
front derailleur; it was bent and twisted after eating a pant leg.
Fortunately I quickly converted the bike to a 1x5.

Pictures from the trip are here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk9xLRaW

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Waynee: IMO, your question is perfectly reasonable, and I for one will be
very interested to hear responses. For me, a slow, heavy bike would be an
instant non-seller.

One aside that might be pertinent: as Jan Heine has shown over the last few
years in his publication, Bicycle Quarterly, the most influential factor in
bicycle speed, after aerodynamics, is tire quality. A tire with thick,
heavy sidewalls will rob a surprising amount of the pedaler's energy, while
a very supple tire, even if a very wide one, will roll with far less
friction. The difference is in the casings: a supple casing drains far less
of your energy than a thick, stiff one which simply requires more energy to
flex it.

I disagree with Jan on a number of points, but my own experience, such as
it is, very definitely bears out this judgment.

Back to the Clem: I personally would be interested to learn how it rides on
rough dirt roads, particularly on sandy soil.

[RBW] Re: VO Tourist Cockpit FS / FT

2015-03-26 Thread John
I've still got the VO Tourist bar cockpit available for sale. I no longer
need to trade for a set of drop bars. I'll go $100 shipping included on
the VO/Tektro/Nitto cockpit.

I've also got a set of Tektro interrupter brake levers (model RX 2.0) that
I'll ship your way for $30, and a set of Shimano bar-end shifters and pods
I'll let you have for $75 shipped. There are some scratches on the outer
side of the shifter bodies that I tried to show in the pix. They're
completely functional, and came off my 8-speed Ram. I believe they're
Ultegra, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Contact me off-list with any questions.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
Well said, Drew. Though the engine and skill of the rider can make up a lot
of what modern bikes have (the generally the riders lack the skill because
of it). For example, I've ridden down wash boarded roads on my Hunqapillar
a lot faster than my ride partner, who had front shocks. His shocks
cushioned ever bump slowing him way down while I reached a speed that
allowed me to cruise smoothly over the top of them. On single track climbs
and trails, I easily keep up (when I want to) with anyone on the trails.
All on a bike that feels far more fun to ride because the fun isn't only in
the speed it is in the bike and the joy of how it handles.

2015-03-26 Thread Patrick Moore
I forgot to add -- of course -- that in my own experience, such as it is,
the length of the stays should not affect the bikes sprightliness. My Riv
road customs, including the gofast, have stays that measure 45 cm to the
end of the horizontal dropouts, and these two define for me sprightly
feeling bikes. I've also read that Jobst Brandt, who certainly would not
tolerate a sluggish bike, used to ask the builder *not* to cut the
chainstays -- to use the full length of the tubing.

On Thu, Mar 26, 2015 at 4:24 PM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote:

Waynee: IMO, your question is perfectly reasonable, and I for one will be
very interested to hear responses. For me, a slow, heavy bike would be an
 instant non-seller.

One aside that might be pertinent: as Jan Heine has shown over the last
few years in his publication, Bicycle Quarterly, the most influential
factor in bicycle speed, after aerodynamics, is tire quality. A tire with
thick, heavy sidewalls will rob a surprising amount of the pedaler's
energy, while a very supple tire, even if a very wide one, will roll with
far less friction. The difference is in the casings: a supple casing drains
far less of your energy than a thick, stiff one which simply requires more
 energy to flex it.

I disagree with Jan on a number of points, but my own experience, such as
it is, very definitely bears out this judgment.

Back to the Clem: I personally would be interested to learn how it rides
on rough dirt roads, particularly on sandy soil.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
I'm not sure where you're getting slow from or what it means. I have no
idea what kind of riding our daughters will do on theirs over the years,
but I know whatever it is the Clementine will handle it very well and be an
excellent one bike does it all. Will it be race fast? No. They don't race
(at least now), and if they do in the future then they will likely want a
different bike. But it will not be plodding or cumbersome or slow in a
poorly designed/engineered kind of way.

It's designed to ride with upright bars, the Bosco or Albatross. My wife is
on the cusp between M and L, and we got her the M because she is going to
be riding with kids and on trails, so nimble was a consideration.

As to long chain stays, conventional wisdom isn't wisdom most of the time.
All reports I've seen from folks with long Rivs absolutely love them and
are surprised (at first) that they ride great, even better than what they
expected from a Rivendell (and that comes from folks who know what a
Rivendell rides like).

If you're going to ride the MTB racing circuit, you may want a short
wheelbase for increased agility. For all other types of riding, you golden!
Grab a bike and go! Grin.

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread drew beckmeyer
well, i think there should be a noted difference between slow and
fun/lively/nimble/comfortable. i consider my hunqapillar to be
fun/lively/comfortable, but it is also slower than most modern
road/mountain bikes. knew it going in, love the bike for it. a lot of it
is the way i have it set up, and the clem sort of necessitates a cruisery
set up, while the hunq can be made more aero, at least. thick tubes, long
chainstays, very upright riding position, fat fat tires there is a
reason go-fast bikes dont come like this. there is a reason the faster riv
bikes dont come like this. i dont think any one of these aspects inherently
makes a bike slower, but all together
i think, all im trying to say, and the other people who have ridden clems
are saying is that it is not a go fast bike. i dont think it was intended
to be a bike built to be fast. i dont think anyone at rivendell said that
it would be. it excels at what it is said to excel at, and it is lovely
and fun to ride. handles loads, works well on dirt/gravel (havent actually
taken it on any legitimate mtb rides yet), stable, super comfortable, good
looking etc. i think pretending it is gonna be a zippy road bike is not
accurate.

ive said this a few times in other threads, because we have one and ride
it, and each time it is met with a sort of how dare you say it is slow.
maybe i should say not as fast, but slow is not objectively good or bad,
especially from a brand with un-racer as it's motto. when asked for a
comparison, based on my experience, the clem is not as fast as the other
rivendell bikes ive ridden, but it does everything else great.

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread John Philip
I'm 6'5 and currently 240#. Like Amit I have a 67 Hilsen and 68 Atlantis.
My Bombadil is a 64 and the Hunq is a 62. The Hilsen rides beautifully
and feels the most lively. I ride it with minimal day loads and I love it.
It feels fast and smooth. The Atlantis was my commuter and now around town
bike. I originally got it thinking I would tour with it but I found when
it was loaded it just too flexy for me. Various loading strategies didn't
change things. For me it works best with moderate loads. The Bombadil
shines loaded and is very steady climbing slowly or descending at speed.
I've loaded both bikes with the same racks, bags and gear there is no
question the Bombadil handles a load much better. It seems a bit dead
without a load. The Hunq is set up as an offroader with Midge Bars and fat
knobbies. It takes fatter rubber than the first gen Bombadil and I like
the stand over room it provides. It's very steady up hill and down. I'm
sure it would be fine with a touring load as well. If I could only keep
one it would be the Atlantis. If you look through my photo stream you can
see them in various configurations. https://www.flickr.com/photos/cnyriv/

[RBW] Re: Hunq vs Clem

2015-03-26 Thread Wayne Naha
Thank you all for your very helpful thoughts on the Clem. It really is
great to read that the Clem is a fun/lively/nimble ride. That is, really,
the best I could hope for. There is, after all, a difference between a
slow bike and a bike being ridden slowly. Clearly, I am not mistaking the
Clem for a Roadeo. Still, it is good to have the option, should one want
to mash the pedals, of riding with the wind in one's hair. Not often,
perhaps, but it's good to know it's there.

On Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 7:36:16 PM UTC-4, Bill Lindsay wrote:

If I buy a Clem, I guarantee it will be slow. Because when I got on the

suppose a rider determined to be fast may be able to resist the soothing
charms of the Clem and ride fast in spite of them.
I didn't feel like
 mashing. I felt like riding.

in the spirit of really wanting to know, how those of you who have come to
this conclusion did so?

 Stoutness-similar
Ride- hunq is potentially more aggressive. Could be a roadish bike with
the right cockpit and wheels...though there are better options for
that...but it has that capability. Feels faster.
The Clem is a much more laid back, cruiserish, town bike. Upright is way
upright. Stays are extra long. I think it could handle anything, but it
wont be quick doing those things.
Clearances- easier on the Clem, but similar

We love both of these bikes dearly. The hunqapillar was bought before
the Clem's existed, but For me, having a us made, fully lugged frame was
somewhat important.

My best wishes for your recovery, and that of your bicycle. Bicycles can

Just writing to say-glad you are ok and wish you a speedy and happy

I'm sure you will be in all our thoughts!

 Best of luck.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm not a Clydesdale, but my brother at least edges into the territory at
220 or so, so I'll make a modest case for road bikes: he very comfortably
and enthusiastically rides light road bikes (steel, titanium -- RB-1,
Merlin, Paramount; literally scores of classics; he won't touch CF) with 32
down to 23 mm tires. Of course, he has owned, again literally, scores of
dirt bikes and all rounders (and track bikes and tandems and folders and
cruisers and track bikes and hybrids and coffee bikes and beaters and
collectibles and antiques and classics and everything else except
recumbents and electric bikes) with tires up to 60 mm, and loves those,
too, but owning an allroad bike doesn't mean you can't enjoy a true gofast.

Get a Hunq and a Roadeo!

Me, I own:

Utility bike -- 2003 Riv custom. This gets most use. 32 mm tires with
fenders, probably 35+ without, capable of firm dirt and gravel that we
don't have on my side of town.
Gofast -- 1999 ditto. Lightest wheels and fastest tires possible; currently
571X23 but hoping for 559X32 if Compass comes through.
Dirt bike: Fargo. I'd love a Hunq but that 58.4 cm top tube is just far too
big and I have doubts about sufficient tire clearance. If I ever spend $2K
on a dirt bike, it will be a Rivendellian Chauncey Matthews.

Yikes! Threads like this freak me out, i've been off the bike most of the
winter (training for something else), and i'm a little worried about my
on-bike awareness on the road. The fact that more experienced people then
me are at risk only scares me more!

Heal fast, and know that the bike can be repaired or replaced but your
health is many orders of magnitude more important, so take care of that
first. The bike will be there and even though it's discontinued there are
enough SimpleOnes and QBs around that you can find a replacement if need
be, so don't fret over that.

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread DSat

Intended use? Majority paved riding. If I did off-road, it would be
somewhat smooth, nothing rough. I will not do any heavy loaded touring.
So, due to my intended riding, I'm more concerned with getting the correct
fit as I think any of the models would serve my purpose. I have always
been a tough bike fit because I am not very flexible and my arms are
slightly shorter than most men my size. So, I need the bars 2 to 4 inches
above seat level. I'm trying to find the happy medium from being too
upright and too far bent over.

Just based on the eyeball test (and too many past bikes), the 59 Clem
Anthracite (size 59 is too high for standover height for me though) pic on
the Riv web site looks like what I want to achieve in the (1) distance from
seat to bars; and (2) distance of bars above seat level. So, I'm trying to
determine which Riv model and size will give me the best opportunity to
match that setup for my PBH.

Based on my PBH, I guess we are talking a 55 Sam, 52 Clem, 56 Atlantis, and
54 Hunq. Woops, forgot to look at Cheviot sizing. I live in Georgia, so
I'm trying to narrow things down.

My only frame of reference is my 59 Soma San Marcos (that Riv sells as
well). Yes, the 59 San Marcos to too big for standover height with 32mm
tires. I can stand over it with shoes on, but it is at emergency status
if you know what I mean ha ha.

It currently has Alba's with a 130mm length stem and is not far from a good
fit. I forget the model of the Nitto stem, but I seem to remember it was
the tallest version that had the 130mm length and I currently have the stem
at the max height. For a lack of a better way of explaining it, it's
almost like the Alba's are slightly to small and the Bosco bars are slighty
too big. The Alba's need just a little more height and a little more reach
back towards the seat. I can get the Bosco to work height wise, but it
comes about 2 inches too far back towards the seat. I think if I had a bar
halfway between an Alba and Bosco it would be about right.

I am looking to replace the 59 San Marcos due to the standover height.
Also, I've never seemed to be able to find a good pedalling position or
relationship between the seat position and the pedals. It's just never
been right and I assume it is just that the frame is a little big.

The 59 San Marcos and the 55 Sam is somewhat close in geometry. I'm afraid
that I might run into the same bar issue with the Sam as with the San
Marcos. The Clem, Sam, and Hunq (i think) have the upsloping top tube by 6
degrees which will help get the bars up. The Atlantis I think is only 2 or
2.5 degree upslope.
Any advice on which model or models that you think might best for my sizing
issues?

[RBW] Spring Break Microtour

2015-03-26 Thread WETH
During the cold and snowy days of January, my wife and I thought a multi-day
bike tour with our middle school aged sons would be a fun way to spend spring
vacation. Unfortunately weather during the last full week of March in the
Washington, DC area can be quite unpredictable. A cold and damp forecast nixed
the idea of spending a few days riding at the Delaware and Maryland seashore.
Since we live in the midst of a wonderful network of trails, we settled on a
micro tour (a s36o - credit card style to a motel- if you will). The only
questions were: How far could we and the boys ride after a winter of little
riding? Would the weather give us a 48 hour window of reasonably dry and not
too cold temperatures? (Other commitments crept in and limited us to two days
of adventure.)

We departed Tuesday morning around 11am after waiting for the temperature to
rise into the mid 30s. We recruited a third teenager, a family friend who had
ridden the GAP trail with us last summer. Our first stop was Bethesda, MD.
Despite only having biked 6 miles from our house and temperatures in the upper
30s, the boys wanted ice cream. I opted for a hot cup of coffee. Departing
Bethesda we rode 8 miles on the Capital Crescent Trail which gradually descends
into Washington, DC; we found a good pizza place on the waterfront in
Georgetown. Despite temperatures still only in the upper 30s, the boys enjoyed
a second ice cream before we crossed the Key Bridge into Virginia. I always
experience a bit of awe crossing the Key Bridge. From its span you can take in
the beauty of Georgetown, the Potomac River, the Kennedy Center and the
Washington Monument.

I knew we had a climb, but I was not prepared for the steepness and length of
the first climb on the Custis Trail
(http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/custis.htm) as it passes the Key Bridge
Marriott. After four hilly miles the Custis trail connects to the WOD Trail
(http://bikewashington.org/trails/wad/wad.htm) The boys experienced several
drivetrain mishaps on this stretch. My adolescent sons do not shift with much
finese or forethought. So I tended to several dropped chains and one chain
wedged between the smallest cassette cog and the frame (not sure how that
happened as I could not make it happen again after freeing the chain). I
wasn't complaining as these stops provided me with needed rests from the hills.

Once on the WOD we had a lovely ride through the Virginia suburbs. Without
leaves on the trees, the view into the neighborhoods is expansive and
interesting. After Vienna, VA the trail takes on a slightly rural feel as it
heads toward Reston. Between Vienna and Reston, an approaching cyclist called
out my name. I enjoyed catching up briefly with Howard who was commuting home
on his gorgeous Rambouilliet.

The goal had been to ride to Leesburg, but the late start, dropped chains, ice
cream eating and leisurely pace left us running out of daylight. After 37
total miles of riding we found a motel in Herndon, VA and ate a fine meal at an
Outback Steakhouse next door.

Wednesday morning was damp and cold; we delayed our departure until 10am. Just
a few sprinkles remained, and we enjoyed a brisk ride back to Vienna for
breakfast. The weather warmed slowly, and we had a great time retracing
yesterday's route home. The Custis trail was much easier coming the other
direction, toward the Key Bridge, and we had no drivetrain problems. Over the
final miles, my wife and I agreed that we were glad we went ahead with the
trip. The colder temperatures had given us doubts. Most importantly the boys
had a great time! I so enjoy enjoy seeing my sons cycling ahead of me as we
pedal along.

One of the boys rode my 1977 Motobecane Super Mirage on which I installed Soma
Sparrow bars. I was unnecessarily concerned about the original 27 inch
wheelset surviving a teenage boy. The only casualty was the Motobecane's front
derailleur; it was bent and twisted after eating a pant leg. Fortunately I
quickly converted the bike to a 1x5.

Pictures from the trip are here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk9xLRaW

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
You've gotten some very good advice here. I'm a super clydesdale (400
lbs) and I can say that I would confidently ride pretty much any bike on
the market with no fears. However, many would probably not be fun to ride
due to excessive frame flexing from a person of my weight and many
currently available wheels probably wouldn't last long under me.

I e-mailed Grant several times about two years ago, when I weighed 360, and
he was very insistent that the only Riv models he would recommend would be
a Hunqapillar or a Bombadil. He wouldn't even recommend an Atlantis.
Despite that, if I had the cash I would buy a used Atlantis in a heartbeat
and just put some custom built wheels on it. All of the other bikes I've
ridden with no problem were probably similar to the Atlantis in stoutness.
I mostly ride pavement and I'm not a power rider. I will note that the
one aluminum bike I owned accelerated like a race car under me, compared to
my steel bikes so that might be an argument that a stiffer bike like a
Hunqapillar might be better for me than what I'm currently riding.

I will also note that on a bike forum I frequent, a guy who works as a
mechanic at an LBS said a Hillborne came thru their shop and he got to ride
it and his overall impression was that the bike was way to flexy for his
tastes. Comfortable for gentle cruising was his opinion but horrible for
hard riding and acceleration. He thought some or most of the flex might
have been the high quill stem so who knows if that's even a valid
representation of the frame itself. I've never thought of the Hillborne as
being on the lighter side of things, more in the middle between a Homer and
an Atlantis.

Yes, I meant seat stays. I assumed it as much. Thanks for the explanation

Maybe Phillip Kim meant seatstays. Those are bent, to accommodate the
super cool seatlug, which was initially developed for one size of big stout
bike. At that time, they hinted that seat lug might get used on a second

that time, Grant indicated that he would get around the single seatstay
exit angle by lengthening the chainstays as the bikes got bigger. Now,
he's decided that all sizes should get long stays, so he did the curvastays
 instead. It's all good.

I would not be concerned at all about sending it to Riv at all. My

Riv is not a frame building/repair shop btw, they would give it to whomever
