Thank you, Oliver. Yes, if it is contributory, it's because I am a canary

Andy, I thought about shellac and may try it, but I wonder if it would come
off really fast.

Thank you, Clyde. I get 2 cups of homemade bone broth a day, so have
confidence in my calcium and magnesium. Altra Running is a great company.
Their shoes are a lot thicker than I wear (theirs are 10+ mm, I wear 2-3mm

Yes, these road bikes are a joy in the hills. Glad to read of your joy.
And for the record, I too like my bars high - 2 cm below the saddle.
That allows me to get a little lower going downhill, and makes it easier

[RBW] Re: FYI: Saluki on Ebay

2015-09-16 Thread George Chalekian
Hi Interested Riv People.

I actually posted that bike here on June 24th as I was hoping to "keep it
in the family."
I am the eBay poster, non-bike shop, non-pawn shop, original owner.

Forgive me for the respond-all nature of this post even though it is
addressed to Minh, but I am endeavoring to reach you all en masse as the
auction ends today at 11:15 PM PST just in case anybody is interested.

*The Mystery Of The Stem*
It's a Nitto Periscopa stem which effectively raises the bars to saddle
height, as is Mr. Petersen's penchant.
He picked the stem.
Honestly, I thought it looked somewhat odd when I received the bicycle but
it provided a lovely place to attach a bell and both it and the headset
have performed without incident since day 1.
I picked the Chris King headset – the one "blingy bit" on the bike.
(You'll note the rear hub and the bottom bracket are neither King's nor
Wood's – both of which Mr. Petersen vetoed.)
The original mustache bar (also Nitto) was swapped out for a brand new Velo
Orange Rando bar when my commute changed to include 6 miles of headwind.
No Bianchi's, Veloce's or otherwise, were harmed, nor did anything on this
bicycle ever reside on another bicycle myself excepted of course.

*Scratches Everywhere (Dan, this one's for you)*
Perhaps the comment was in jest, but if not, I'm going to guess that the
highlights running horizontally along the top tube could easily be mistaken
for scratches, but they're not.
They're the consequence of "poor"overhead bedroom lighting.
I think when I finally got around to taking the pix, at my wife's
insistence (n + 1, etc) the sun had already set.
Other than the two conspicuous scrapes beneath the top tube (conspicuous if
you're laying on your back and looking up at bottom of the top tube) that
resulted from a the bike being locked to a rack, not by me let me quickly
add, the paint still has that lovely new-bike clear-coat shine.
Why? Because it lived inside my office when I got to work and inside the
garage when I was home.
My apologies if I sound defensive but, well, I am.
I babied that bike and it's pretty dammit.

*It Really Is A 54.*
See attached pic.

*You're Right John, Japan, Not Taiwan, Is Where The Frame Was Welded.*
(Thanks KevinD2004 for pointing this out if you're haunting this forum.)

*Twin Headlights*
They work. Brilliantly. (I'm sorry for that.) I have them set so the left
light (if you're on the bike) illuminates the road starting about 10 feet
in front of the front tire, and the right beam reaching out farther. The
left light being tilted farther downwards keeps me from blinding oncoming
cars, who used to flash their brights at me before I got things dialed in.
While they can be run independently via the magnetic switches on lights, if
you have both lights on they overlap, creating a bright spot from about 15
to 30 feet in front of the front tire. I got the idea from one of Sacha
White's Rando bikes.

As Bill Lindsey points out the hub is a Schmidt Nabendynamo and it as well
as the lights were ordered from Peter White. The lights are identical
models expect for the housing. I had to replace the housing on the left
(black-rimmed) light because I car-doored it and cracked the housing. The
hazards of living in a garage.

*It's Stolen! (Halfstep Nell, you listening?)*
The stolen bike was reported in Miami. My bike and I live in Honolulu. The
stolen bike was Pea Green. Mine is Pewter, complete with all the fancy
paint touches. See the pics on eBay.

*My eBay Rating Sucks.*
Honestly, you may be right. I've only sold one thing on eBay. I attached a
screen grab of my profile. My hope is the (1) after my name indicates I'm
selling one (1) item?

Want to know anything else, email me directly at georgenc...@gmail.com.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-16 Thread Comotion001
WOW, thanks for all the great feedback. It definitely sounds like a must
have bike. The bike is on Minneapolis Craigslist. The owner says he
purchased it from a collector in Colorado but doesn't know what year it is.
I live in NC so I'm not able to see the bike other than the pics. He is
asking $1200. Is there a way to determine year based on a serial number?
Also, does $1200 sound like a fair price? I don't know what QBs typically
bring. Based on the feedback I would love to purchase it but want to
proceed with caution. Anybody on list live in Minneapolis or recommend a
good LBS I can have the owner take it to for inspection and packaging /
shipping ? Thanks again for all the great feedback. I hope it works out.

[RBW] Re: 2 things: 1: ISO/WTT for fixed gear lockring; 2: How to fix wood chain guard?

2015-09-16 Thread Roger Blake
Cauls are shaped wood pieces, in this case curved to suite the shape of the
chain guard. They go between the steel clamp(s) and the chain guard. They
distribute the forces of the the clamp and protect the chain guard from
being dented by the clamp. Done in this way, the repair will be stronger at
the glue line than it was originally. If it breaks again it will be
somewhere else.

I could use a pair, but even one would be enough to see if they fit the
bike I have in mind. Anything with life left is fine, but a beater is OK
too for what I need. If they work out I'll buy a new pair. Let me know what
you might have, and where you ship from. I'm in PA. Don't want to invest in
new tires until I know for sure.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for helmet/head rain covers?

2015-09-16 Thread Ron Mc
thanks for the heads up on the Gore helmet cover. We rarely get the kind
of soaking rain most people think of as showers. We mostly get flash
monsoons that don't last long but can put down 5-10"/hr. You get caught in
one and the worst thing about it is the runoff from your helmet vents
flooding your eyes. Carrying an emergency helmet cover sounds like a great
idea, and I found one online for $35.

[RBW] Re: FYI: Saluki on Ebay

2015-09-16 Thread Minh
George,

Thanks for posting, i didn't mean to incriminate you along with the green
one. For anyone coming into this thread late, the Green one in Miami was
the suspicious one that was reported stolen on BikeIndex. George's silver
one in Hawaii is a totally different thread of discussion.

George many of the comments you are referring to are also in regard to the
green one, so i wouldn't get too wrapped up into it. The one pertinent
point in your post is in regard to your ebay rating, when you don't sell
much or are not active it will be low. Some people are suspicious of low
feedback sellers so it's good that you posted such a detailed message so we
know you are a real person. good luck with the sale.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-16 Thread Minh
the age of the frame does not matter that much. some of the earlier ones
do not have the braze-ons the fork for a front rack (you have to use
clamps). but i would be more worried about condition, if it's in good
condition then age doesn't matter to me.

a bike is worth what someone is willing to pay for it, FWIW i paid that
much for mine but it was local so no shipping factored in. There was a S1
(frame + a few extras) on the list for the last few months for ~$700, that
was a great price even if not complete, so $1200 is reasonable to me for a
full bike. you could maybe get one a little less but if you're a
non-common size, you have to factor in availability.

Patrick-

Have you considered wooden pedals?

I can't find the exact thing I'm thinking of, but someone made at one point a
kit that consisted of pedal spindles that one screwed into pieces of wood to
make any sized platforms. I'm pretty sure I read it in an old Rivendell Reader
at some point. Does anyone else remember those?

If you google "wooden bicycle pedals" and hit "images" you will get lots of
ideas for pedals that wouldn't cause an issue with aluminum/skin contact.

2015-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I think your opinion about the matter is entirely off center. Of course,
we've not heard the other person's side of the story -- audiatur et alter
pars! -- but as described in the Blug, the OP is a self involved jerk.

Grant has since Rivendell began soliloquized about running his business and
his own emotional reactions to doing so; this is just one more of a similar
series, and he is entirely in his right to do this. He disclosed no
identity -- this is no public shaming! -- and he (Grant) is very obviously
a person who is very troubled at having to reject stupid demands; this sort
of soliloquy is, I gather, one way he deals with them.

Re: [RBW] Novels???

2015-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Kindle has dozens if not hundreds of free or sub $3 books in the public
domain. Do you like Kipling?

"Can't say; I've never kipled." But no more of that. You can get Rudyard on
Kindle; Kim is good. I just downloaded Plutarch and Tennyson, and I've got
all of Willa Cather and Chesterton.

Not free at all, but the Aubrey/Maturin series of Napoleonic British navy
sailing life are pretty darned good and available on Kindle and in the
library. Patrick O'Brian.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recent Blug post; no date given, but perhaps it's today's, 0915.

2015-09-16 Thread Tim Gavin
I'm less than satisfied with right/rear Silver shifters.

I've tried two (used and new, with both gray and black plastic discs) and
encountered the same problem: the tension screw is very finicky and doesn't
stay in place very long.

Within a couple hundred miles, the screw will back out a fraction of a turn
and I'll lose shifter friction, resulting in an abrupt shift to high gear.
When I attempt to re-tension the screw, I invariably over-tighten it and
the effort to move the shift lever is too high (I cracked one gray plastic
disc this way, in the middle of a tour). Unfortunately, the "sweet spot"
of just-enough tension doesn't last long until it loosens again.

Grant has alluded to this in previous Reader/Blug articles, and says that
messing with the tension bolt is a minor issue that's easy to remedy. My
opinion differs; I find it more frustrating.

That said, I don't feel that it's such a problem that I expect Riv to
refund me. It's a foible of the design of these shifters, not really a
failure.

I prefer to use Shimano bar-ends for rear shifting on my bikes.

However, I am very satisfied with the shifting of the front/left Silver
shifter, specifically with triple cranks.
The Silver front shifter seems to throw more cable than the Shimano ones.
This means that I have to move the shift lever less to effect a front
shift, which gives the shift lever a more direct, commanding feel.
The front Shimano bar-ends require lots of lever travel and end up near a
10 o'clock position when in the biggest ring, whereas the Silver is still
at 8:30 in that situation.

I recently took the right Silver shifter off my Riv and set it up with a
Shimano 10s index shifter (with XT M772 RD and 11-32 cassette), but I kept
the left Silver shifter for the front derailleur (IRD Alpina-D with Campy
Racing T crank 52/42/30). My KOM is set up with 9 speed Shimano bar end
shifters, and I plan on replacing the front Shimano shifter with a Silver
bar-end.

FYI, the bar-end pod on the 10 speed Shimano shifters is black and
oh-so-slightly different than the standard pod on the 7/8/9 speed Shimanos
and Silvers. The 10 speed Shimano shift lever fits fine on the 7/8/9 speed
pod, BUT the 10th click is locked out. The top of the 10 speed pod has a
little less material and this allows the lever to reach the 10th click. If
you want to use the 10 speed Shimano bar ends, you have to use the black
pod (included).

Tim

Re: [RBW] Re: Recent Blug post; no date given, but perhaps it's today's, 0915.

2015-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Tim is right about the liabilities of the Silver shifters, principally the
loosening tension bolt and consequent breakage of the tension washer; and,
also, their fragility when the bike falls over on them.

The Power Ratchet design used a locknut to hold the tension just right. But
you can compensate for the lack of this on the Silvers by using blue
Loctite. With that, mine stay adjusted indefinitely -- too much so, in
fact, since I Loctited the left after making it too tight, and now it's
hard to back it off. But I don't shift rings much.

The absolute ne plus ultra of shifters would be a Silver with that part
reinforced where the lever is cut back to accommodate the pawl; and with a
locknut added to the mounting screw.

Of course, the great liability of the PRs was that the locknut,
proprietary, always got lost.

[RBW] Re: My New Roadeo

2015-09-16 Thread RJM
Yeah, these Roadeos make great road bikes. I have the saddle on mine about
even with the stem, which I find comfortable and I can still use the drops
on my Mark's bar fine.

I'm generally passing people while decending and this bike gives me total
confidence while doing so, even when the road twists and turns. I did a
rather difficult 62 mile charity ride on this past Saturday that was hilly
and ridiculously windy (no tailwinds either because it just turned out that
way) and the bike was fine. I was tired afterwards, but never once
uncomfortable. This specific route had some truly terrible roads on it,
something which I actually brought up with the organizer. One downhill was
just destroyed and had that gravelly (sp?) loose chip stuff all over it;
apparently this was a failed attempt to fix the various potholes and
irregularities. I was glad I had the Roadeo on that one and other riders
were complaining up a storm afterwards because of the condition and how
they had to slow way down. I didn't slow down because the bike can handle
that stuff fine.

Oh, and for Walter Mitty-type male fantasy small size compensation
purposes, nothing at all, I say *nuthin *at all beats the endlessly
serialized Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. The niche is
semi-demi-hemi-literate escapist-brutal-doogooder-kill-all-the-bad-guys in
horrible ways fantasy. The movie was all wrong.

Ladies welcome, too. I will be curious to hear any lady's opinion of

Getting rid of part of the tag seems as though it would simply leave you

Does anyone have experience removing the tag without creating a hole in the

Not short, not free (that I know of), but definitely Riv: "Remembrance of

can't get to the finish line in a hurry, it's endlessly lovely, and there's

Three cheers for LPW! Although, personally, I prefer /Murder Must

Or a mystery in an entirely different style: /The Big Sleep/, by
Raymond Chandler. Hard-boiled, but often very funny.

A little something to go with that...

And then, there's historical mystery. Today, both LPW and R. Austin

time periods they (at the time, contemporaneously) portray have become
historical. And if Rome's your thing, there are several terrific
series. Lindsey Davis' Marcus Didius Falco novels (starting with
/Silver Pigs/) and now continuing with Flavia Albia; John Roberts
Maddox's SPQR series; and of course Steven Saylor's Gordianius the

matter what your historical period, chances are you'll find someone
writing historical mysteries about it.

And speaking about historical novels, I can't stop without mentioning
Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. I saw him in person once, at
the Library of Congress. He'd come to give a reading. In the audience
were several honest to god captains of real life tall ships, at least
one of whom had come across the entire country to come see him.

If it's green, it's a 2004. I don't think there was a second run of

[RBW] Re: Novels???

2015-09-16 Thread Surlyprof
One of my all-time favoites is "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"
by Robert Pirsig (read 4 times). Also recently really enjoyed "Super, Sad,
True Love Story" by Gary Shteyngart. A funny and horrifying vision of the
future. Seems extreme but, given the political and technological trends
going on... not as far fetched as you would hope. His writing was
outstanding. As much as I want to like Dave Eggers, "SSTLS" was way better
than "The Circle" (IMO).

[RBW] Novels???

For short, try "Veronica" by Nicholas Christopher. If you like it, try his "A
Trip to the Stars". One of my all time Favorites is "Wonder Boys" by Michael
Chabon, then anything else by him.  Have been reading aloud a lot with my wife;
all these are books that we have read recently. We couldn't get through "
Confederacy of Dunces", go figure. A very enjoyable nonfiction that we are
just finishing is "Driving Mr. Albert" by Michael Paterniti, about a trip with
the guy who "stole" Einstein's brain. Very interesting, well written and
entertaining. Also try any of the mysteries by Bill Pronzini. Most are short,
lots of Bay Area and California settings. Enjoy!

[RBW] Re: non-destructive complete removal of tag in MUSA moleskin shirt - anyone know how?

2015-09-16 Thread Garth
I remove tags all the time . I don't know exactly where you are speaking
of but there is really only 2 types of sewn tags, on seam or sewn on fabric
independent of any seam.

For the on seam kind , I hold the garment in my lap , color up facing me. I
hold the tag with my left hand , first 2 fingers nearest the seam at the
end facing me. My right hand folds down the collar and back. I use a pair
of small Fiskars #4 detail scissors like these
http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-4-Inch-Detail-Scissors/dp/B000OQKNCU .
You'll notice holding the tag like this you can see both top and bottom
fabric easily . With scissors in right hand start cutting the tag as close
as you feel comfortable right up against the edge of both the collar and
fabric. At first go slow if you don't feel confident, and make small cuts
instead of one continuous one. You'll get the hang of it. About halfway
through I reverse the fabric and start at the the other end and proceed the
same. Bravo well done !

The independently sewn on tags are easy. Just use a seam ripper from the
tag side , using the tag as a buffer . Start slowly and proceed pulling
gently the thread loose. Easy peasy !

Re: [RBW] Re: Recent Blug post; no date given, but perhaps it's today's, 0915.

2015-09-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
Philip

You didn't read it wrong. There is no wrong, or right. Different people
focus their attention on different aspects of the story. Some of us focus
in on the rude note and think "what a jerk!" Some of us focus in on the
fact that Grant aired it out in public and think "what a cowardly and
shameful thing to do!"

Personally, I focus in on the emotional part of it. A lot of us that work
retail or customer support are good at it because we care. We're
emotionally invested in our customers being happy. Sometimes those of us
in that line of work will be treated by our customer in a way that says:

"you are bad. give me something for free. do it now. after you do it, you
are still bad, and I will still badmouth you and your company"

When that happens (and it has happened multiple times to all of us in that
line of work), it is a bummer. To me, Grant's post was venting a bummer
situation that bummed him out. To me, it's a double bummer that his doing
that is regarded by several of his devoted customers as a cowardly or
shameful act. Customer support is draining. If you are doing customer
support in a field that you also LOVE, it can be doubly draining. I feel
for him. Working in the retail part of the bike business is the only thing
(besides fatherhood) that I've ever been absolutely great at. It doesn't
pay, and sometimes it grinds you up. I'm glad Grant has the BLUG to vent
on things like this, and I hope he gets more "keep your chin up" responses
than he does "that was shameful and cowardly".

[RBW] Re: non-destructive complete removal of tag in MUSA moleskin shirt - anyone know how?

2015-09-16 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I'm afraid we're talking about different tags or shirts here. The only red
thread on this shirt is holding on the buttons (and not all that well, but
that's a separate issue :)). My shirt has two tags of which I'm aware. One
is the red/white/blue MUSA tag, and it does not touch me when I'm wearing
the shirt. The other is the "content tag" sewn onto (into?) the interior of
the left side seam of the shirt's trunk. (Interestingly, onto the tag is
stitched the "spare button", held on to the tag with red thread.) It is the
content tag which I can feel when I'm wearing the shirt and which I'd like
to remove.

It may be (and I would hope that it is) that the stitching holding the
content tag onto the shirt is separate from shirt's structural stitching.
But it sure doesn't look that way to me.

Thomas Lynn Skean

Getting rid of part of the tag seems as though it would simply leave

Does anyone have experience removing the tag without creating a hole in

It's a first generation (green) Quickbeam. Maybe with original tires??? I
think $1200 is within reason, especially if they will work with you on
shipping, paypal, etc. That was the original price IIRC, so they do hold
their value. 58 & 60 are probably the most desirable sizes as well. What

I'm talking about the big ol' MUSA tag; I thought I remembered it being
sewn on with red thread. Whatever color the thread just stick to ripping
out the stitching holding the tag on and you'll be fine; it is completely
separate (on all MUSA stuff) from anything important.

[RBW] Re: Waterford Paint

2015-09-16 Thread Richard L

My question is out of curiosity. Just wondering if members' experiences
are the same as what I've read elsewhere. As with the vast majority of
Rivendell owners, I have only good to say about Rivendell. I'm currently
not looking for another bike, and if I was it would be a Waterford-built
Rivendell. I'm confident that if the paint truly was a problem, Rivendell
would make it right. I've seen the feedback on D, and Joe Bell's comment
about Rick, "Well, I guess you don't need me anymore."

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Waterford Paint

2015-09-16 Thread Comotion001
Richard, I own a 1992 Paramount, original owner, built and painted by
Waterford, and a 2007 Waterford, both have excellent paint jobs and are
holding up well. Bill
