Re: [RBW] Homer vs. Sam vs. Bleriot

2015-12-24 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I have a 60cm double-TT Sam and a 58cm AHH. At the moment, they're both
setup fairly similarly: 9-speed Shimano mountain drivetrain, bar-end
shifters, 46cm Nitto Noodle handlebars, Compass tires (38mm Barlow Pass for
Sam, 42mm Babyshow Pass for Homer) and Nitto Tallux stems (80mm for Sam,
100mm for Homer, I think). I have more miles on Sam than Homer, and Sam's
miles are much more diverse, including daily semi-urban commuting, loaded
touring and trail/offroad rides. Homer's commuted a few times, been on a
few day-long rides and one dirt trail (C canal) s24o.

As setup, I think Sam has a bit more reach than Homer, and generally, I
think I tend to setup my bars with more reach than most folks my height do,
thanks to some ape-length arms. Homer generally feels a bit more spritely
and nimble. Sam wants to track straight and true. Both are tremendously
comfortable rides. Both came to me used with a fair amount of beausage, so
I wouldn't hesitate to put them through their paces in any type of riding
situation, but I don't expect I'd steer toward using Homer for fully loaded
touring duties, though I'll run a few handling and packing experiments
through winter and spring to see how and how much luggage he prefers to
carry. Sam's a taller bike - I have very little wiggle room straddling the
top tube, and less stem sticking up above the headset - standover doesn't
impact the ride, but stem height might a bit in terms of flexibility.

Re: [RBW] Homer vs. Sam vs. Bleriot

2015-12-24 Thread Liesl
I have a 50 saluki (the original 650b homer) and a 51 proto bleriot . I rode
both for a number of years with original mustache bars and now both have
boscoes. Bleriot is set up as a single with a tiny titanium rack on the back;
saluki is a 3x8 with mini / marks nittos front and back. Similar 38 tires on
both. They handle the same in what I can perceive. The single is and feels
lighter.

As I recall, according to grant, the differences between the bleriot and the
saluki/homer are about fancy details that don't affect ride, e.g. double
tapered seat tubes and fancy lugs. And bleriot a we're made in Taiwan whereas
Salukis we're Toyo.

Bleriots were a heckava deal.

Yours, liesl

Picture taken with flash - not lights, they're reflective stickers. Some
"spokees" stickers from funreflector.com, and some other shapes from

commuting in the dark in the morning, evening, or both, so I like to add a
fair amount of reflective stuff and lights to the bike/myself.

[RBW] Re: 650BX1.95 on a side-pull Sam?

2015-12-24 Thread Zach Duval
My Sam is recent, purchased in May. Blue 51.

The geo chart for my Sam gives 53 as the space between chainstay crimps. With
Surly Knards, I see at least 3-4mm on either side, maybe more.

The Maxxis Pace supposedly* fits a bit smaller than listed width, at least on
something like my 19mm inner-width rims.

My goal is to find the perfect summer trail tire. I can do about 20 miles,
mostly dirt and gravel roads, to a network of about 30 miles of fantastic
singletrack around Whitefish, MT, as well as some nearby sections of the Great
Divide, but I'don't like to have thebiggest tires I can for it.

*This is, of course, iffy speculation

2015-12-24 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I currently have three Rivs - all set up differently, so not
apples-to-apples, etc. But my Homer, set up for mixed surface riding,
mustachioed and fenderless, is more "sprightly" than my Sam, set up as my
tourer with bells and whistles, and my Atlantis, set up for "country day
rides" and good-weather overnighters. That said, like Philip mentions:
Cadillac ride / sports car, depending on what you wish. I don't think I
would seriously load my Homer down.

2015-12-24 Thread Philip Kim
Justin,

I don't think you can unless you got creative. I can do a modified front fender
as Paul gives about 1/2 in of vertical clearance. The Tektro 559 I have on the
back will be harder with about less than 1/4 in of vertical clearance. I will
most likely try to cut the rear fender up, and try to attach it to the fender
mount on the top seat stay, so the fender doesn't go under the brakes. Then use
the L bracket to finish off from the brake to the chainstay. Both front and
rear will require Sheldon fender nuts I have on hand. Will do it next week when
I get back from the holidays. I'll probably just post a Cheviot build report
then too.

[RBW] Re: My Gift to the Bunch

2015-12-24 Thread John Price
Hi Marty,

Thanks for posting that. I don't always like all of Rivendell's bikes but
they sure know how to make the neatest head badges.

As for the Saluki badges, my Esprit who was the model that Jon G and I used
for the Saluki badge (the first, not those weird ones with the "old, sad
eyed" Salukis - if they could even be called Salukis) passed away
yesterday. She led a grand life and made it 15 years old. I think I'll
have to take my Saluki bike out for a ride this weekend in honour of her.

Happy Holidays and thanks again,

John Price

[RBW] WTB: Handlebar Bag

2015-12-24 Thread Eric Norris
I’m looking for a handlebar bag in black canvas that’s more or less like the
example in the photos below. Basically, a bag that doesn’t need a front rack or
decaleur, and that has two rear-facing pockets and one larger compartment. The
bag in the photos is perfect, except for the color.

I you have one that’s taking up space, let me know.

zach, let me take some pictures to make sure. but the front with paul
racers probably has about 3mm or so on each side. probably 2mm on each side
for tektro 559s.

fenders will definitely not fit unless you modified them somehow or used
raceblade types.

2015-12-24 Thread ted
The charts may be a bit suspect as clearance for some models has changed
over time, but according to the RBW geometry charts the Cheviot's max tire
is 5mm larger than the Sam's. Though the brakes may be the same the
tightest spot for tire clearance is often the chainstays and I think the
Cheviot has longer stays than the current Sam.

Ted, interesting.

I just recently had the newest Sam sage green with Paul Racers. Able to fit

Cheviot and San Marcos.

Phil,

Interesting indeed. My wife's Sam is a 52, I take it yours was from after
the size change? Perhaps some minor changes were made that increased the
clearance. If the clearance has changed, the vintage of the Sam that Zach
is thinking of may be significant.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5836/23051338044_2cd564a8af_z.jpg

here is a medium sized version of the same photo. I was on the Olav Sabo
bike bridge here in Minneapolis Minnesota on one of my last rides mid
December 2015. I don't ride my Atlantis in the wintertime but the balmy
weather made me go for a 22 mile loop around the greenway and home. The
bars are feeling good to me at that height. I'll do more riding in March
next year and probably during the winter add some padding on the tops of
the drop bars where I spend 98% of my riding . In the winter I commute 6
miles on a "sacrificial" bike with studded tires (going on 10 years now-
gotta love that lugged steel!) and a 55" fixed gear.
Thanks to all who replied. I especially like the photos from weth and
clayton.
Best wishes to all on this great forum for a merry Christmas and a blessed
new year!

[RBW] My Gift to the Bunch

2015-12-24 Thread MartyG
I don't post a lot, but I enjoy stopping by from time to time. I have
bought and sold things here, and am thankful for the good-natured
conversation and inspiration. You may recall I've done a few head-badge
posters in the past, and it occurred to me that an update was in order to
add a model or two that has come along since the last time I posted a
poster. (Early 2014 as I recall.) You can download a full-resolution of the
following yourself, and have it printed if you like. It's sized big: 24X30
at 300dpi. You can always select a smaller file. If you want to print, I've
had good luck at Walgreens or CVS. It does not include every possible
variation of badge that Rivendell made over the years, but every model is
represented in the order it was introduced to the best of my knowledge. And
FYI, that first one in the upper left corner is made of pewter - the first
badge ever made and quite rare.

Here's the link to the downloadable version:

[RBW] Re: 650BX1.95 on a side-pull Sam?

2015-12-24 Thread Surlyprof
During the summer I change the commuter wheels on the canti-Hillborne over
to 45 Smart Sams. They are a blast to ride. Bouncy! A couple of caveats:
(1) no fenders... that's probably obvious and (2) they rub on the Pletscher
double kickstand when I lean hard on the pedals. There was enough
clearance in the frame. The rubbing was only caused by the kickstand. I
was also surprised that they felt pretty supple and rode smoothly on roads.
I had heard that RnRs gave a little vibration on roads.

[RBW] Re: Homer vs. Sam vs. Bleriot

2015-12-24 Thread Dave Johnston
Don't forget the San Marcos. My Girlfriend has one of those that I built up
and I have a Bleriot. It is the "road iest" of the bunch, butI think they
are pretty similar. I have drops on the Bleriot and she has the Dove Bar so
its hard to make a comparison. I can hardly tell the difference between a
Bleriot and a Rambouillet except that the 38mm tires on the Bleriot are
more plush and it doesn't have toe overlap so the Bleriot gets ridden more.

Geometry is pretty similar across the range but as far as tubing goes from
lightest to heaviest and also from narrowest tire to largest tire capacity
I think it goes like this.
San Marcos
Bleriot
A Homer
Sam Hillborne

[RBW] Re: Homer vs. Sam vs. Bleriot

2015-12-24 Thread Philip Kim

If I'm not mistaken, I thought I read somewhere that the Homer has slightly
thicker tubing than the Bleriot to handle some loads. And Sam is thicker
tubing than the Homer to handle even a bit more load.

I second Dave, I have a Soma San Marcos and it is awesome to ride. I don't
know where it ranks with the Bleriot or the Homer, but compared to the Sam
I had before, it's a bit more "road bike", and has slightly thinner tubing.
The Sam was like riding a Cadillac, and the Soma San Marcos is like riding
a sportier compact car like a Suburu Impreza. Still functional, but
slightly sporty and not as luxurious.
