Re: [RBW] New Rivendell

2016-07-07 Thread Scott McLain
Hi Tim,
I shared your thoughts when I bought my first Riv not long ago. I enjoy the
uniqueness of my Riv more and more. It is unique in two ways, unique to
typical bikes being sold today, but most importantly unique to me because I can
customize it to make it "my own" (fenders, bar tape, etc.)

It may take you a few months to get used to it, but I think you will enjoy the
extra unique/weird factor with the DTT. It will be another thing that makes it
uniquely yours!

Best,
Scott

Re: [RBW] New Rivendell

2016-07-07 Thread Tim Gavin
I'm 6'1" with a 91 pbh (shorter legs, ape arms and torso) and 225 lbs, and I'm
very happy with my lighter-gauge Rivs.

I have a 1st-generation 59 cm Riv Road Standard (753 frame) that I've converted
to 650 x 38 and I use as a Rando/tourer, and a 59 cm Roadeo that I use as a
road/anyroad bike (currently 700 x 32 but it clears a 700 x 37).
I've never felt the need for the added stiffness or stoutness of a 2TT frame,
and I'm not light.

Riv/Waterford can make you a 1TT Hilsen with centerpull posts for a small
up-charge, and I would consider that a perfect do-anything bicycle: comfortable
enough for a whole day in the saddle, enough clearance for Barlows and fenders,
and still fast enough.

A 2TT bike would be great as well, but I don't feel the need.

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] New Rivendell

2016-07-07 Thread Garth
I got my Bombadil sight unseen and never owned a sloping tt bike let alone
double parallel. I too had ridden only level tt road racing frames other than
a Stumpjumper . Is the double tt necessary ?not really but I discovered it
makes for a great carry handle ànd is a preferred place to clamp on the repair
stand , which being tall is really nice to work on the bike. Aesthetically ,
I just look at it as different, by now I don't even think about it as it is
really just another bike . It is an efective way to raise the bars though which
I never would have thought I would enjoy so much ! So what if it looks
different than what I was used to, I quickly get over myself and all those
silly ideas of what is "supposed" to be , or not, either way . so what so
what so what ?!! Ride on ...

I really like the 2tt, but understand the hesitation. Sometimes it draws
attention, and you'll have to answer questions about it from the sceptical and
the sincerely interested.

There are a few big atlanti and a 61cm homer on eBay right now, if you can't
come to terms with it.

The pump issue is a legitimate benefit. Hard using a pump along the top tube on
a normal bike now.

Re: [RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-07 Thread David Stein
Cool, I have a hall pass for next Satuday, July 16, if anyone else is free
then. Depending how hot it is we could aim for meeting up in Walnut Creek
and doing a Diablo or Shell Ridge (little to no shade) ride then down to
BBH. If it's on the hotter side that day I might opt to ride over from
Rockridge BART (the cooler side of the Bay), over to Skyline/Grizzly, down
through Redwood regional, then sticking to the mostly shaded
Lafayette/Moraga Regional Trail (which is also flat!, but with tons of
pedestrians). Earlier the better for me but I'm flexible.

I'd be down with this either way, but is this for real closing? I trust the
Radavist, but haven't heard anything from the folks at Riv.

I own a 56 single tube Hillborne but have always coveted the 2tt model even
though 2 tubes are not needed in a 56. I've always loved the more unique
look of the double tube and would also really appreciate being able to
carry a frame pump between tubes. Often, when I lift the bike to go down
stairs or to put it on the stand, I disengage the frame pump. The second
tube would reduce that potential greatly.

Enjoy your Sam.

[RBW] Re: Hunq porteur options?

2016-07-07 Thread Thomas Bielavitz
Thanks, yes, a plumbing tube bender is helpful for getting the tubes bent
symmetrically around the braze-on centerpulls. Not sure exactly how it
would line up w/ cantis, but that seems likely.

BTW, the Surly tubes are stiffer than the Nitto. I don't think you'd need a
bender for the Nittos (other than for accuracy) but it was necessary for
the Surly tubes. They also weigh more, but cut short as pictured the weight
isn't much at all.

[RBW] New Rivendell

2016-07-07 Thread Tim Bantham
Hello All,

I discovered the group today and decided to jump in and ask a question. My
story is like many that you may have heard before. Maybe it's the same
story as yours. After a decade of racing and spending tons of money on
expensive bikes only to find that I am just not that comfortable on them I
have decided that I was going to give Rivendell a try. I no longer race so
the word "train" is no longer in my vocabulary. Now I like to just ride my
bike for the pure enjoyment. Once I shed the burden of having to put in 3
hours on the bike in pursuit of a training goal the joy of riding my bike
has returned. So in the interest of brevity I will keep my question short.
I have pretty much decided that I will get the Sam Hilborne. I'm 6' 1" with
a PBH height of 95 CM. Long legs, long arms and a short torso. I'll be one
of those guys who needs a 2TT design. As one who has an appreciate for
beautiful bicycles I am struggling a bit with the appearance of 2 top
tubes. Is there any other 2TT owners who had similar hesitation? What has
your experience been? I am wondering if it is something I'll eventually
become accustomed to. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

[RBW] 205k Eastern Shore Maryland/Delaware Brevet with DC Randonneurs

2016-07-07 Thread Lungimsam
Started in Centreville, MD and went to Milford and Milton Delaware and back.

129 Miles

*Bike and weather:*

On 53 Bleriot. Noodles. Loups. 50’s-60’sF. Rainy and cloudy all day. Light
rain off and on and a little steady at times, but light enough to be fun.
Beautiful day in warm enough temps. The rain was light enough to be no
problem. It can be fun to ride in a light rain. The overcast skies and cool
air add to the interesting and beautiful ambiance.

It was overcast and dim outside. Light rain off and on all day. I was so
anxious about the ride, being my first brevet that I didn't sleep at all
the night before. I am not Randonneur material. Just not a hardy person.
But I wanted to go a little further than Centuries, so I tried it.

*The Ride:*

The ride started at about 7am. Everyone took off into the early morning
gloom (50 riders?) from the lot and I was one of the last out of the lot. I
jumped ahead and figured I’d ride mid-pack so that as we spread out I would
still have people behind me and I wouldn’t be last. I felt it would be good
to have some riders behind me as the ride went on in case I needed
something, or couldn’t make out a turn. I could always try to manage until
the next rider came along and get assistance if needed. Ha! I quickly fell
to the back of the pack! Silly me, thinking I could keep up with
Randonneurs!

The sun was up but it was overcast and cool and a little dark. It was a
nice ambiance to ride in, though a little gloomy.

I tried to keep up with the front group. So I figured if I could keep them
in sight I could follow them and not worry about missing the turns so much.
But they were going fast and I knew I shouldn’t go too hard in the
beginning. I started to get into a more forever speed and relaxed back into
the pack. There seemed to be the front group, a middle group, and those
behind me. Like maybe 5-10 people. Me and another guy were sort of in the
middle of the last two groups. Soon I was passed by three more people. I
kept going and it was a nice ride. I could see people in the distance to
follow on turns. I tried to keep them in sight. It was easy going and not
too fast. I was having fun. Soon the other rider with me moved on ahead and
I was coming to the first info control. It asked how many tiers the
birdhouse, just after a turn had. I counted three and discussed it with a
small group of riders from ahead of me who had stopped to check it out.
They moved on and as I was finishing, two more riders came up from behind –
George and Jonathan.

We rode together a little and George introduced himself. We chatted for a
while, but then they moved on ahead of me. I knew I was one of the last
ones at that point. I am just soo slwww. I followed the cue sheet
and took the turns easily. It was pretty much flat and easy going. I was
confident and happy. But it was starting to rain a little. I looked for the
next control listed on the cue sheet and it was at mile 50. I thought that
was far for a control, but it was a 205k ride so I guess they had to be far
apart. I think at around mile 28 there was a gas station/convenience store,
and I figured I’d stop there for a quick break and to get a drink to
resupply. Some of the riders from up ahead had the same idea and we chatted
about our bikes. They took off and I did soon after. It was light and
rained off and on for the first part of the ride. Not hard enough to put on
the rain gear, though. I kept going and was enjoying the ride. I think I
was mostly alone at that point. As I entered Milford, Delaware, near the
next control, I rode down the main looking street. I asked someone in a car
where the turn I was looking for was, and he said just ahead. I went along
and stopped at Dolce coffee place, as it was an open control in Milford and
you could stop anywhere to get a receipt. There were some seats inside and
outside on the sidewalk. Riders were hanging out and eating and drinking
and taking their break. I got a coke and a Gatorade and ate a little. The
more remote towns on the Eastern shore of Maryland and into Delaware seem
to be only several square blocks between miles of farmland, and this was no
different. I enjoy riding through these towns and wonder about the
inhabitants and what they do for a living all the way out in such remote
places that allows them to live in such beautiful towns like this one.

After the break I started out alone again and double checked myself on the
little map I had cut out from a cycling map of the Delmarva peninsula I
bought. It was great and came in handy a few times to help me check where I
was to make sure I didn’t overshoot any turns and I was still going the
right way. *I’ll have to remember to try to bring a map like that on
brevets with the route traced out by me in highlight pen for easy
orienteering. *It was good to have along, though I only needed it a few
times.

At mile 60, the next info control came up asking a T or F

That in turn, makes me think that an outpost (not necessarily a BBH) might make

[RBW] 2016 Maryland/Delware Bay to Bay Century Ride Report

2016-07-07 Thread Lungimsam

*Bay to Bay Century Ride*

6/26/2016, Sunday

1638 climbing feet and max grade was 2.7%.

107 Miles

On 53 Bleriot. Sunny. 60’s -80’s. Wore one wool t-shirt, Nike Sneakers,
wool cycling shorts, RBW Summer gloves, Helmet, cotton socks, RUSA
reflective vest. Beautiful day and clear skies. Lots of sunlight. I got a
little sun-burned. I always thought wearing seer sucker was going a little
too far with the whole Riv thing, but after this sun burning ride, I can
see the wisdom if it.

*Background:* Because it was on Maryland's eastern shore, I thought it
would be flat, but it wasn’t. It went from Betterton, MD, to Woodland
Beach, Delaware, and back to Betterton in one loop.

*Climbing:* Nothing bad and no hard efforts, but this century was like one
step up in hilliness from the totally flat Seagull or Six Pillars in
Maryland I reported on here in the past. The roads were like tilted. Long
straightaways that were tilted a little up or down or flat. Ride with GPS
said 1638 climbing feet and max grade was 2.7%. But I thought there were a
couple 4% grades. But they were all easy. I could spin along fast on all of
them except a couple. I used my big ring most of the time, but sometimes
had to get in the middle ring, especially during the last 20 miles when I
started getting tired. So it was climbing that was between Seagull/Six
Pillars and Lifeline100/Indian Head 100 Maryland Centuries.

*The Roads: *Starting out the roads were pristine new tar looking. With
some kind of shiny stuff in them. In the early morning sunlight it looked
like thousands of stars on the road. It was very pretty and made it a fun
first part of the ride. There were only two bad roads I remember. One was
lumpy and had what looked like patchwork the same color as the main tar on
the road. Gave it a moon like landscape crater look. The other was lumpy
and harder to get through. Felt bumpier and slow. Then there were the
smooth but rough surface, bleached out roads. Almost all the roads were in
good condition, and only a few times saw short busted up sections. Good
shoulders. Quiet. Not much traffic at all.

*The Ride:* Started out on those starry roads. Clear, sunny skies. Just
beautiful and perfect weather. Had a great time starting and not many
people around at all. The whole ride I rode alone with only people
occasionally passing me and me passing them at times, though that was rare.
Maybe hundreds had signed up. Looked like most were not doing the century
from the roster I saw at sign in. As I got about 10 miles into the ride, I
ran through a field of glass and got my first flat. I took off the tire and
tube, and installed the new spare tire (field repair style), since the
tread on the old one was almost all the way worn down. Last fall I noticed
the tread wore off the old tire and decided, next flat I would switch it
with this new one. That or when the casing wore through, whichever came
first. So I replaced it with the new spare tire I had been carrying with me
since last fall. Yay! No more spare to carry around! Makes more room in the
handlebar bag! 650b Loup.

I got back on and started riding, knowing the first rest stop wasn’t far
into the ride. I moved quickly through the first stop. Trying to make up
the time I spent fixing the flat. Being a slow rider, I wanted to make the
last rest stop in time before they closed. And also thought it would be fun
to catch the people who went ahead of me when I flatted. At mile 19, I
crossed the MD/Delaware line at Caldwell Corners.

On to the next stop. The last 10 miles before the stop were in farm fields,
but also wetlands of some sort that had reeds and canals through them.
During the last 8 miles, which ended at the Woodland Beach, Delaware, flies
started attacking me. I didn’t know what was going on. I thought bees were
trying to sting me. But turns out they were flies. The flew along side me
and out in front of me and I think I got bit twice in the behind and they
kept hitting me in the back, and mostly on the back of my head just under
the bottom edge of the helmet in the center. I don’t know why they liked
that spot. At the rest stop, there were hundreds swarming, but they seemed
to mostly stayed up under the gazebo ceiling and not come down to us. There
was a beautiful view of the bay. There was a nuclear reactor off in the
distance. I was told that it was the Salem reactor in Salem, New Jersey.
After a short rest, I started up again, and went back to a town called
Smyrna by backtracking on the same road as the flies again attacked along
the way. There were headwinds during most of the ride but they were minor.
Just like breezes.

My right thigh had been acting up this last week or so and I was hoping it
would be ok, so I went easy during the ride and tried not to push things so
much, being very careful to not overdo it. My leg felt fine and was doing
fine the whole ride so far. I noticed that when I was warmed up and riding

[RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-07 Thread KC

If I hadn't happened to walk by BBH after dinner when we randomly stayed in
Walnut Creek on the way home from visiting our son in the Bay Area, I
probably wouldn't have my Cheviot. Actually if Grant hadn't been there,
introduced himself and suggested a stop at HQ the next day to look at
bikes, I probably wouldn't have my Cheviot. That would be pretty sad for
me. I guess I was very lucky.

Drew, there's nothing strange about visiting RBW as a non-bike-buyer. Anyone
with 3 Rivs already has major dollars invested in the company, and undoubtedly
still buys stuff from them. My policy for any bike shop visit is to buy
something, which I'm sure most of us do when we drop by World Headquarters. I
know Grant & Co appreciate it.

That's clever. I assume you bent the stays in order to clear the centerpull

cut them to length. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks, Garth. The Surly tubes are slightly larger, but the clamps were
still capable of securely engaging the narrower Nitto diameter.

Also, for the application as pictured a plumbing tube bender is helpful for
getting the tubes bent symmetrically around the braze-on centerpulls. I
happened to have a cheap one, I think it cost about $12 from home depot a
few years ago.

That's a shame. We have unavoidable family in Lafayette, and getting to go by
riv and bbh was always my consolation prize.
We are a 3 rivendell household, and I always feel a little strange going to
rivhq, since I'm not gonna be buying another bike. Bbh was a great place to
see/touch all the new and weird stuff. It's still the only place I've seen my
wife get excited about buying things for her bike.

Curious what kind of Santana you have, and is it set up with upright bars. I
have been on the HHH list, but my circumstances have changed and I cannot
afford one. I was lucky enough to pick up a Santana Vision, circa early 90s
with 7speed bar ends and 26" wheels. I put on 2.1 Tioga powerblocks and
some crank shorteners. Waiting for some long cable and I will swap the
front drops for Boscos or Albatross, but on our short test rides, I really
like it. Does not exhibit tank-like qualities. I'm hoping it is 87.6
percent of the HHH.

I would dearly love to get an the HHH, and I also don't like to go on about
a "poor man's Rivendell" but there is just no way I can even think of
getting one. I do think they will be highly sought after in the future,
based on reports that they have a Clemish ride quality.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh tandem Pre-order is live

2016-07-07 Thread cyclotourist
This is such a tough call... I have a perfectly good $600 tandem
collecting dust in the garage. It gets used maybe four times a year.
And it's set up pretty nicely, seen here set up with Little Big Bens:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/23046471715/in/photostream/lightbox/
I really want to have a fat-tired 650B tandem, and have even
considered moving the canti posts down on our tandem to get that.
So long/short is that I don't know if getting a $3000 (full build)
tandem is going to change how often we go for rides.
