[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-27 Thread Joe Bernard
Jay, my Clem L is literally three months old (maybe four) so this is
ridiculous, but I *really* like the fully-lugged Chev, and that color at that
price came at a perfect convergence where I had just sold a recumbent trike and
a couple bags. BOOM. Plus I have some heavy sentimental value invested in the
Roadini color which reminds me of my first Riv, a Romulus.

Now I just have to decide what to do with the Clem. I have the cranks and front
derailer that came on it, which I removed for the e-kit, plus the Boscos and
stem I just replaced with a Jones Loop. The Chev will need road calipers and
short-pull levers, so that leaves the brakeset on the Clem. Oy, now that I
think about it, I pretty much just need another 650B wheelset to have two
complete bikes! ;-)

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-27 Thread Bob Lovejoy
A canti-Sam has always been near the top of my list and a choice of black
or the sage makes my head spin. That said, I just built up a perfectly
good and fairly cool Raleigh Randonneur and have an Appaloosa that is
perfect for me. I also have a more-than-perfect Cheviot. I think I am at
or in a good place.

Still... a great price and a great chance.

Question... Would people consider a canti-Sam something of a sportier but
still do-it-all bike versus the Joe A.?

So, from sporty to less sporty (and not considering the Waterford's or
customs or, I suppose, the Clem's):

Roadini
Sam H.
Joe A.
Cheviot

I know, at least assume, the Sam is better for a drop-bar set-up (though
mine is currently successfully set-up with drops) and also has a shorter
wheelbase. Does anyone know if the tubing is the same on Sam versus the
Joe? I know the forks are different - and probably stouter on the Joe.

I should also add that I believe each of these four bikes to be perfect for
their intended purpose. I was just trying to imagine the ride difference
between the Sam and the Joe.

Anyway, I have backed away from the keyboard a few times but wow(!),
something of a deal on a bike I have always wanted is hard to not consider.
Anyone on the fence and without new builds or bikes in the recent past
should really consider this!

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-27 Thread George Schick
Laing hit the nail on the head for me. I like to fool around with 30-40
year old frames and components, overhauling, sometimes repainting (rattle
can, of course), etc. Right now I'm in the middle of rebuilding an old
early-70's Shimano Crane short-cage rear derailleur that I plan to install
on a '72 vintage frame with 120mm rear spacing/5-speed freewheel hubs. You
just can't fiddle around with the modern stuff like that anymore. Sure,
sometimes you have to surf around on fleaBay or Craigslist, go to swap
meets, and what not, but it's all fun and intriguing, this looking back in
time and reviving some of the old equipment. Resurrectio, it's called and
for good reason. The Riv approach to cycling underscores this kind of hobby
because the frames are never so far out bounds that you can't tweak things
a bit here and there to wind up with some personally customized result.
Call it what you want, but that's what I consider "Rivish."

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-27 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've seen many opinions on what constitutes a "Rivish" bike and my own
thoughts have varied over the years. At this point, I would say that a
durable, practical, versatile and comfortable bike ridden with a "Just
Ride" attitude, is "Rivish".

I can't quite convince myself that a carbon bike is Rivish and I struggle a
bit with even aluminum. I tend to agree with Grant that a bike should have
a lifespan measured in decades, rather than years. I would never consider
a non-steel bike that I personally own to be "Rivish" but I wouldn't argue
that someone else's non-steel bike isn't "Rivish".

[RBW] Re: St. Louis shops

2017-10-27 Thread Jim S.
Steve, I live in St. Louis.

We have lots of nice bike shops, Big Shark, Mesa Cycles, Cursed Bikes.
Cursed Bikes is new and sells coffee, which is an extra perk (no pun
intended). I can't say these shops are especially Riv-ish, which I would
define as practical, steel-framed bikes used for touring and all-round
riding, as opposed to racing. There are no Rivendell dealers in St. Louis
that I know of.

There's a small shop in Soulard with, in my humble opinion, and
exceptionally good mechanic (and owner) - one Matt LaBerta. He's a great
guy who makes his own frames. I like going to his shop. His shop is really
neat, but not Riv-ish.

In short, if you visit any St. Louis bike shop, don't except a
reincarnation of the Bike Book, and Hatchet. I seldom see another Riv rider
around these parts. Once, I was in Shaw Park fiddling with my Atlantis, and
a nice guy road up on a Sam Hillborne. But he was from San Francisco, just
riding through on a tour.

If you want to know some neat rides around here, tell me and I'll fill you
in. Otherwise, I'll stop typing.

[RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-27 Thread REC
I think you're considering the right bike for your application, but I have
to say that I don't own a Clem, but a Joe Appaloosa (my first Riv and I
LOVE it), as that one fit my needs better.

However, if needed a bike for what you describe, I would have bought a Clem
L. If you're thinking Clem H, also consider a Joe Appaloosa. Gossamer on
this board has a 58 cm one listed for sale and they come up for sale every
so often. I don't think you could go wrong with Clem L or either Clem or
Joe looking for an "H".

If you can make it down to Portland, you can visit Rivelo. John frequently

Another thought, you could almost certainly get away with the larger frame

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-27 Thread lconley
To me a Rivish bike used to mean a highly engineered modern lugged steel
frame that was meant for riding, not any type of competition use. The
lugged thing has partially gone away, but the other still mostly holds.

I like Rivs because they disappear beneath me. No need to think about or
compensate for the bike because it does what I expect it to do.

I am a bit of a Retrogrouch in that I think most modern components are
ugly. In general I don't like black components although I have black
plastic Simplex derailleurs on one old bike and partially black Super
Record derailleurs on another.

I also like Rivs because I like to tinker with and build bikes. I only buy
frames with the exception of the "long bike" Protovelo (Protopaloosa). Only
the rear derailleur and crank that came on it remain at this point anyway.
I tend to watch the frame specials and if something interesting and/or if a
great deal on a frame size that fits me shows up, that becomes my next
build - 40% off on a new 52 cm Bombadil at Thanksgiving a couple of years
ago was too much to pass up. I hardly need another bike, but I have an NOS
set of Campagnolo Nuovo Record Hi-Lo hubs that are screaming Frank Jones
Sr. at me

Very nice build. Outdoor shots would be good!

I like drillium & high flange too. My 1974ish Ron Kitching came with lots
of factory drillium: drilled first gen Dura Ace brake levers, a drilled
Crane rear derailleur and a drilled Titlist front, and a drilled Sugino
52/47 crankset. I like it enough that I had a friend design a drillium
wedding band. (Sadly, that turned out to be metaphorical.) Here is a

Re: [RBW] Re: Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-27 Thread Eric Daume
I picked up a used Clem H

this summer and ended up selling it pretty quickly. I think the frameset
would work out fine for me, but I didn't like many on the stock components:

- I'm not a Bosco fan, no "just right" position that I would use for 80% of
my riding

- Stock tires were terrible, the worst tires I've ever used. How can a 2"
tire ride so harshly?

- The saddle caused me physical pain after just a few minutes, much too wide

- The stock shifters shifted pretty poorly, what with the micro clicks.

All pretty small stuff that could have been easily fixed, but I wasn't in
the mood and just sold the complete for about what I paid for it. So my
advice is to think about a frame up build. Maybe I'll try this again in the
future.

good thread timing! i just ordered a 52 Clem L recently and just have to
ship some parts over to riv and wait for the build to happen. i'm 5'9ish

it as a kid hauler / utility bike that we can both use, with a quick
release thingy to adjust the seat post as needed. it'll also make an
awesome bike for guests since lots of people will be able to ride it. set
up with a b67 sprunged saddle, bosco bars, huge wald basket on front, and
rack on back with a kid seat. sticking with stock kenda tires for now but
will look forward to putting some ne plus ultra fatties on there sometime
soon.

[RBW] Thoughts/considerations for Clem as daily do-it-all bike?

2017-10-27 Thread Kainalu V.
I love my Clem H, even though I just took it apart and transferred the parts to
a step through Rosco Bubbe. Most people are saying it's a relaxed bike that's
good for going slow, but the whole truth is it does a great job of going fast
when you want it to (But my Rosco Bubbe is faster!, and it's an "L", so yeah,
get the clem low if you really want to fly)
It is heavy, and as Joe did, a great candidate for motors or sails or whatever
else you can imagine. Picture Steve McQueen tearing across the countryside
jumping fences and stuff, that's well within the spirit of Clem Smith.
As was said earlier, the moose variety of Bosco bars are so good, that they're
no longer offered in completes is great reason to look for it used. Never
having to think about bars slipping or whether you've adjusted them to the
perfect angle is very comforting, and having the triangle to run a cable
through is comforting when you lock up for longer than the 45 seconds it would
take for a low down scoundrel to steal your unsecured stem and bars.
You'd love a Clem, any Clem, with whatever, riding wherever
