[RBW] Re: Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-13 Thread Surlyprof
I have been commuting by bike and train for the past 3-4 years, couldn't be
happier, and have even inspired a couple of my students to do the same. No
fighting the increasing Bay Area traffic anymore. It is a pretty solo
venture as I've actually noticed a bit of a decline of cyclists on the
train (much to my surprise and dismay). The first and last part of my
commute is on a dirt path that runs along the Alameda water channel in the
east bay. I start the day riding as the sun rises on the lakes and
channel. There is always a wide array of wild birds looking for
breakfast. Even saw a bald eagle perched in a tree one day. I stopped to
watch it and then it swooped down across one of the lakes and snagged a
fish out of the water. Amazing way to start the day. The ride home is
almost pitch black with few lights beyond my bike light. Initially
stressed me out but now I find the dark, quiet ride a delightful way to
wind down after a long workday. My wife has even taken to walking our dogs
to meet me at the edge of the park where I come out of the woods. Great
way to end the workday and start the evening at home.

My truck is a 2003 and, after two <2500 mile years, I expect/hope to get at
least 20 years out of it. Since it sits in the driveway most days, I've
received 4 different notes under my wiper blade asking if I want to sell
it. I'm usually amused except for the one who wrote, "I don't care if it
doesn't run." I thought I should be a tad offended that a complete
stranger would assume that I'd let my truck sit dead in our driveway. I
guess they noticed the elaborate spider webs that had accumulated on both
side mirrors!

As for the bike lane, I tend to subscribe to one of Grant's suggestions on
page 38-40 of Just Ride. He called it the Safety Swerve. The idea is to
appear slightly unsteady when a car is approaching so they give you a
little more room. Although I don't feel the need to use it much, when I
do, it seems to work very well.

[RBW] Frank Jones Sr. slightly-rugged build

2018-02-13 Thread Jeremy Tavan
So, I just checked with my dealer, and my Frank Jones Sr. frame has arrived
and they're going to prep it for me (frame saver, face/chase, press crown
race and headset) so I can then do the rest of the build. I've sourced
somewhat heavy-duty wheels (rear Mavic A719 with Phil hub and DOS 16/19,
front Velocity Atlas and Kasai dynamo), and I'm actually leaning towards
taking advantage of the 38mm tire capacity to put on some Compass
Steilacooms, and do the bike up with dirt drop stem and RM-013 bar. I'm
thinking this would be super fun to ride around the gravel trails on and
around the levees/salt ponds here in the Bay Area. Madness? Or just plain
fun?

I recently bought the Zoic Reign knickers but I haven’t been able to ride in
them yet. They seem well made. Some sizing reference, I wear 38 Levi’s loose
fit and the 2xl knickers fit perfect.
Recently on the BOB list there was some interest in these.

[RBW] Knicker Quest

2018-02-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Justin. I’ve always been hesitant to try Swrve as they seem geared for
pencil thin folks, as evidenced by the largest size I found in their knickers
is a 33 waist. Sardonic grin. My waste measures at 34”, but in practice 36-38
is required in jeans so I have room to sit. That’s only gotten trickier since
riding exclusively fixed (thicker legs, skinier waist). Shrug.

Patrick

[RBW] Knicker Quest

2018-02-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
Och! Me knickers are in a twist! Sardonic grin. I am looking for knickers to
ride in and for daily wear (so not cycling spandex knickers, but more in the
spirit of Riv’s knickers of yore)

My requirements are:

— casual/dressy look and fit (if they fit like jeans, I’m golden)
— loose enough to allow squatting and floor sitting, but not baggy
— quiet as cotton
— belt loop for 1.5” belt (like jeans)
— Elastic at the knee
— cool, breathable

The two I’ve found that may fit the bill are:

Zoik Reign:
https://www.competitivecyclist.com/zoic-reign-bike-knicker-mens?skidn=ZOI004S-BK-M=UExQIENhdDpNZW4ncyBDeWNsaW5nIEtuaWNrZXJzOjE6OTpjY0NhdDEwMDIyNg==

and Compass: https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/compass-knickers-2016/

Others I should look into?

Re: [RBW] Two Wheels Sold, One Still Available

2018-02-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Eric: would you consider selling the Phil fixed/fixed separately from the
rest of the wheel? (I just possibly might be able to use the hub to replace
a Surly fixed/free.)

If so, 2 questions:

1. Is it easy to respace 120 OL to 130?

2. 32 spokes?

Well, obviously a 3d question: If "yes" to everything, then: How much?

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] I'll be at Riv and need some suggestions about the local area

2018-02-13 Thread Eric Norris
Roberta:

Other than RBW, Walnut Creek doesn’t offer much other than a small downtown
filled with expensive shops. I suggest getting thee to San Francisco* as
quickly as possible and starting there.

If you get to SF around lunch, check out the Ferry Terminal’s great selection
of gourmet offerings. They have everything from burgers to truffles to ice
cream. You can gain a few pounds there.

Fisherman’s Wharf is very touristy, but a walk along the Embarcadero is still
fun.

Walk to Coit Tower and take in the views from way up there.

Go to the Mission District and check out the art, shops, and the great local
thrift and antique stores.

Rent a bike and join the army of tourists riding over the Golden Gate Bridge to
Sausalito.

Go to the Napa Valley, which is about 45 minutes away by car. If you go there,
pass through Napa and head straight for St Helena (nice, but pricey) or
Calistoga (easier to have a great time on a budget).

Have fun!

* Note: the locals call SF “The City,” as in, “Let’s go to The City today!” No
need to say *which* city—they’ll know.

Also: I have a Betty Foy 55cm, Saluki 58cm and a couple other 56-58ish Bikes
you could borrow from Maxwell Park in East Oakland if you’d like.

2018-02-13 Thread Bob Keal
OK--last try, I swear! Almost had a trade worked out, but it fell through,
so my B17 is still available to trade for a C17 carved (slate/black).

Thanks for considering!

2018-02-13 Thread Tom M
Not a resident, but visited last year. City Lights Books is great. SF
Giants ballpark tour is great. If you're into microbrews, this
place http://www.mikkellerbar.com/sf/ is pretty great. Sorry, not much
nature on my list. We stayed downtown and found the city quite walkable,
despite the hills. I'll agree with everyone who recommended Alcatraz.

[RBW] Two Wheels Sold, One Still Available

2018-02-13 Thread Eric Norris
To All:

The two front wheels have been sold, but the rear wheel (Phil Wood fixed/fixed,
120mm spaced, 700c, Velocity Aerohead rim) is still available.

Make me a reasonable offer and let’s get this wheel back on the road!

[RBW] Re: I'll be at Riv and need some suggestions about the local area

2018-02-13 Thread Justin, Oakland
My standards for giving folks a tour are:
Drive over the Bay bridge because living in oakland is the best.
Get coffee someplace and decide which museum to go to. My preferences are:
DeYoung
Cal academy of Science
SFMOMA
Museum of the African Diaspora

The first two are in GG Park, the second two are in SOMA. I would choose one of
the pairs. Either way after you go to them I would head to GG Park and explore
th lakes, SF Botanical Garden, Tulip Gardens and Bison. Head out to Ocean Beach
and up towards Lands End/Sutro Baths. Explore/hike that area and then drive
back via the Presidio.

That’s a day that will tire you out for sure.

Muir Woods is great but you have to get a reservation for parking now.
Marin Headlands are perhaps th happiest place on earth. Bike, hike or drive
over. You won’t be sorry.
I’m going to plug th dark horses that are our wonderful East Bay Regional
Parks. Tilden, Sibley, Joaquin Miller, Redwood and more all have amazing
hiking, biking and geology to see. I love the Big Trees area in Joaquin Miller
and the hiking there is sublime. Sibley is wide open, windy and gives you
amazing Vistas. Tilden is the wild version of GG Park.

Oakland also has OMCA which is an amazing museum and is very underrated.

Walnut Creek is a suburban bedroom community with a large big box store
downtown. Aside from Riv it’s geared towards driving and buying. Stop by Riv,
borrow a bike and get directions to She’ll ridge or Diablo or Briones. Bring
your legs!

[RBW] Re: 29 x 2.3-2.5 Knobby Tire & Rim Recommendations for Clem.

2018-02-13 Thread David B
Hi Dave,
Nice! I'm right near the start of the trail. My thought is to build up my
Clem to ride during the winter on snowy trails. I'm not really sure how
practical that is, but it will give me options for winter riding.
I've got some use Maxxis Ardents coming that I'll try out, and thanks to
Keith I know will fit my Clem, and it'll give me an idea of how much room I
have to work with.
If it does seem to have more room, there are a few 29 x 2.6" tires
available that I think might fit:
Maxxis Rekon
Maxxis Forekaster
Schwalbe Nobby Nic

Reviews show that all of these measure out around 60-65mm wide, which I
know will fit the back, wondering about the fork. I won't be running
fenders.

[RBW] Re: Experiences with Clem L or H

2018-02-13 Thread Jonathan D.
I think the Clem L is a unique bike that could easily be taken long distances.
My wife has one and loves it. If you can test ride the bike it might also be
worth trying a Sam Hillborne. The Sam might be better for 100K rides but both
are great bikes.

Re: [RBW] Un-un-unracing update: My first 622mm 200k, and a Sam Hillborne ride report 9-years later

2018-02-13 Thread Jonathan D.
Thanks for the write up. Sounds like s lot of fun and I’ll have to try a Brevet
someday. I especially enjoyed the write up for the Sam, which I think is often
the underrated Riv bike. My riding experience of the Sam is similar and despite
the weight I don’t feel much slower. The weight of the Sam feels like it is
mostly the component choices and not the frame and I have thought of building a
Canti Sam up with a light group set.

[RBW] Re: I'll be at Riv and need some suggestions about the local area

2018-02-13 Thread Kevin Lindsey
So far, no one's mentioned the obvious: take a walk across the Golden Gate
bridge and, if you're up for a bit of a hike, do the headlands on the
opposite side (Marin). The walk over the water is thrilling in and of
itself, but to see the bridge and its art deco designs up close is really
neat, and the headlands offers the classic view of it all (bridge, city,
ocean, everything).
And, yes, Rivendell is a hoot.
