[RBW] Billie Bar initial review

2018-05-21 Thread Brett Callahan
Ive received mine and will add my first impressions. I've only mounted and
ridden around the block, so hardly a detailed review.

First, I'll need a longer stem. These are way longer than the albatross. A
good trade considering there seems to be a full hand's worth of real estate in
front of the levers now.

I like the flare. It's noticeable coming from the albatross, but these are
still nice and swept back. I mounted mine upside down for a slight drop.
They'll go rightside up eventually, but this was a fun experiment.

FLEX. There's a noticeable amount of flex to these that I never experienced
with albatross bars. It's similar to what you get with a wide drop bar. Could
be good, could be bad, but for now it's just a little surprising.

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-21 Thread tc
I'd guess 61, which is what I ordered, but haven't received yet, so hoping
I'm right!

I'm 6'-1", 90.5 PBH. My only Riv with drop bars is a 58 Sam (8cm Tallux
stem, 46 Noodle) which I really like the fit of. I totalled the [ETT +
stem reach + bar reach] to come up with a similar measurement for the
Roadini ... which caused me to order a 6cm stem for it. Riv didn't have a
6cm Tallux. So I ordered a 6cm Technomic Deluxe from Ben's Cycle
,

which has the brushed finish of the Tallux but is 190mm tall vs. 225 for
the Tallux, but I figure with the tall head tube of the Roadini, that
should offer more than plenty of height extension. You can actually get a
5cm Technomic Deluxe if you need something shorter.

Good luck with your decision!

Re: [RBW] ird power ratchet shifters keep loosening

2018-05-21 Thread wcp444
The bolt loosening is no longer the problem.
The problem is now that there is no internal friction in the shifter even with
the bolt fully tightened.  The front derailleur spring pulls the shift lever
down no matter how much I tighten the bolt.

[RBW] Re: ird power ratchet shifters keep loosening

2018-05-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
Have a good mechanic look at it. A good mechanic who understands how that
mechanism works should be able to look at it and determine what exactly
isn't working and then can recommend what needs to be done to fix it. You
need an expert diagnosis. As a mechanic I need three senses: touch, sight,
and sound, to diagnose most things. You could take a series of photographs
and give me the sight part. You may be able to film a movie to give me
sight and sound. There's no substitute for touch though.

I know those shifters well, so if I had your bike in my stand I'm sure I'd
have your diagnosis done in 30 seconds or so.

[RBW] Re: Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-21 Thread Joe Bernard
A bump is when the thing doesn't sell so you put another plug in for it. I
recently had a bike that I bumped about once a week for a few weeks then gave
up, which I think is what Jim is looking for: Post it, give it 2 or 3 weekly
shots, then come up with a new plan like Craigslist or whatever if it's still
around.

The decision I made about that bike is it doesn't have the value here that I
need to get to let it go, so it's mine until I decide to 'fire sale' it later
on down the road.

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
This may or may not be a helpful datapoint in your search. I have/had two
Black Mountain Road bikes in 59cm. One was at my home and the other lives
at my Mom's house. There was a semi-desperate WTB post recently on iBob
and I went ahead and sold one of my two 59cm Black Mountain Road frames.
That freed up a spot in my stable for a Leo R. I was between a 54 and a
57. I'm 5'10" with a ~86cm PBH. I consulted with Cory and he set the 54
and the 57 demo bikes up with my saddle height and emailed me photographs
of both. The 54 looked weird, in my opinion and the 57 looked like a nice
civilized setup. The stack is about an inch higher than what I normally
run, so I might end up with my stem slammed, or I might end up more
comfortable than ever before. I'm picking up my Leo Roadini on Wednesday.
It will be wearing a pretty light build kit, so it'll be interesting to see
if it's feasible to have a 20 pound Leo.

Data point of one. Between sizes, I chose to go bigger

My thoughts are . I appreciate this group very much .

As for "moderation" in general ... "enjoy a few drinks of good cheer in
spirited moderation, but don't take advantage of the bartender by gettin'
drunk on it and expecting the bartender or anyone else to clean up your
mess. "

As for selling . in essence to me sellers are "selling themselves" to a
large extent in the way they sell their goods. How it's presented, the
thoughtfulness or lack thereof, really looking at their own "for sale post"
as a buyer, and not the seller. Is it informative with item details and
prices and shipping ? Clear photos easily seen ? Would I buy this from
myself ? Things like that

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-21 Thread CapNMike

Hello Dave,

I think we are close to the same size. I am 6' 1" ,my PBH is 90.5 cm and my
saddle height is 77 cm. I chose a 61 cm Roadini. I have about 9 cm of seat
post showing. I went with 48 cm Nitto Noodles and a 9 cm stem.

I have Jack Brown Green tires on A23 rims. I haven't measured the tires
since mounting them so am not certain of the actual size but there is room.
I have Tektro Brakes, the 539 model, I think. I will need a different brake
option if I decide to go with a wider tire. I seem to recall someone
mentioning that they used center pull brakes and were able to fit 38 mm
Compass tires and I may try that in the future as I am quite please with
the Barlow Pass tires on my AHH.

I set the bike up as a single speed with a WI ENO Eccentric hub build by
Rich at Rivendell. I have a DOS 16/19 freewheel on one side and a 16 tooth
fixed gear on the flip side. I don't have many miles on the fixed gear as I
haven't quite gotten used to it.

If I can offer any other measurements please let me know. If you live near
Lansing, Michigan I am happy to let you take it for a test ride.

Please excuse the quality of the photos. I took them in the rain after work
today.

-Best of luck,

Mike

[RBW] (My sweetie's) New Bike Day

2018-05-21 Thread Rod Holland
I got my consort a 45cm Clem-L complete bike. This arrived Saturday, and I
put it together today.

Peeking in the box: fun with lossless compression.

Out of the box, but still in a yoga position.

Now it's a bike (some assembly and a bit of grease and anti-seize required).

Immediately thereafter, the bike escaped the basement and Ellen did some
tentative riding, to permit adjustment of saddle and handlebar height (both
lowered). She also discovered that V-brakes aren't like the other children,
but no harm done (I think). Still to be added are lights, a bell, a water
bottle cage, and a saddlebag, and likely a set of Compass Naches Pass
Extralights. We'll take a shake-down cruise together tomorrow.

2018-05-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
Thanks to all of the above for the kind words.

Scott commented how most of us didn't have the opportunity to race bikes in
high school. I did see a North Orange County Composite team jersey, and
talked to the kid wearing it. I confirmed that if I had a time machine and
could go to Troy high School again, that North OC Composite is the team I'd
race with. The kid explained that they are a first year team with a total
of three riders. He goes to Fullerton High School. We used the Fullerton
High football stadium when I was at Troy. There were a lot of other
geographic attention getters. There was a Corona Composite, and my inlaws
are in Corona. There was a Redlands High School team, reminding me of our
friends in Redlands.

Anyone know a source for formaldahyde free 1/8” plywood?

I live upstate where the seasons are similar to what you have a little
further south. I too have thought about this. I installed hammered metal VO
Fenders on my Sam and I did so with great care. I have them set up with
38mm tires and I really love the way they look. I personally don't like to
hassle with them once they are installed so I will likely leave them on
year round. That said, I have other bikes to ride if fenders would not be
appropriate. Can't think of many scenarios like that other than deep mud.

[RBW] Re: Wider Bars, Shorter Stem? Switched to 48cm Noodles.

I'm running the 48 Noodles on my Rambouillet, using a 70mm Technomic. I
wanted to a shorter stem because I'm using brifters and wanted a
comfortable reach for riding primarily on the hoods with shifting and
braking at hand. The Noodles have relatively long ramps.

When I was using the Albastaches on the same bike, I was running a 90mm
stem. If I ever get a new road bike, the Noodles will go on that the the
Albas will go back on the Ram.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-05-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Tire savers may help; and may not. I used them for years, then stopped
using them, and don't recall a material increase in flats (more or less the
same tires) -- a box or a box and a half of Remas per year remained the
norm.

Certainly, the local "system" pre-sealant of cutting the beads off a worn
racing tire to use as a liner for a new racing tire indicates that local
roadies didn't think much of them. OTOH, someone I knew who rode 10K miles
a year swore by them.

My own conclusion is that they sort of worked against glass and flints but
not so much against thorns.

Shikoro's right now in Brooklyn/NYC, 42mm and I just clip on a fender when
needed. Not beautiful. But comfy and confidence-inspiring.

I usually rode with Nanos back when the QB saw a lot of dirt in and around
LA. (Cazadores just barely fit the chainstays, but limited my gearing
options)

Compass would be the choice if I only rode rurally.

thanks - yeah these bars are a nice happy medium between the albatross and
something like the map ahearne bars (or how i expect the wavie bars will
be). i got some more miles in on them yesterday and confirm they're still
good.

Re: [RBW] Re: Banana sax reviews needed. Stuff fall out?

2018-05-21 Thread Grant Petersen
About the Banana Sack, just an opinion :

1. Sway is often an unnecessary concern. There is a difference between an
"on the bike" problem and an "in the head theoretical" one.

2. Security is good. The least secure mount, ironically, is the original
intended mount, on the saddle loops. Then the Bsack's at its most
horizontal. Even then, it's 100 percent secure when closed, and probably 95
percent secure when you shamefull fail to close it right, when the flap's
just flapping free. You can make it 99.googolplex secure with a
free-flapping flap if you push a bandana down on top of your BananaLoad and
use the elastic stuff under the flap (to hold the banandana in place). Then
only neutrinos can escape its clenched maw.

The original bag of this type, made in France by Gilles Berthoud, was made
as a saddle bag. Gilles is a master bag designer, a bicycle rider, and the
design was little-to-notatall changed from its first public use. We copied
that with our first version (which we called the Banana Bag) in the early
2000s, and no problems there, either.

3. The BananaSack, tho, mounts equally well or maybe 2 percent even better
to the handlebar. That's thanks to Roman, I think, who suggested the new
and embarrassingly obvious solution of two separate straps, like saddlebags
have. Mounted on the front, the Bsack is nearly vertical. I can access
everything in it while riding, and on a road (not a trail) it's not even
necessary to close it with the miraculous toggle.

3. It mounts wonderfully on the sides of baskets.

4. The elastic thing makes it easy to overfill.

5. The fore-and-aft slots (one has a stiffener) are good for phones, tire
levers, flat stuff.

Bags should be easy to use on and off the bike. The mouth of the BananaSack
is like the mouth of a largemouth bass, ready to engulf anything that comes
its way, with no buckles or zippers or roll-top weatherproofing to mess
with. It's not waterproof when submerged (like the bass it mimics!), but
it'll handle an apocalyptic rain, and if you doubt that, you can stuff your
stuff in a Target bag before putting it in.

It's not the bag for everybody and every use, but as handy day-bags go,
it's where we want it to be. There are lots of nice bags of about the same
size out there. It's hard to go wrong these days. Yay!

I had to get a shorter stem when I first started riding the 48cm noodles
too (9cm). I've been riding the Crust 66cm drops lately and I'm using a
stem that is basically 3-4cm. I love the noodles but I wish Riv/Nitto would
spec a wider version, like a 58cm.

David,
Just finished building up my BMC and I went with 3.5" of spacer, 18* 90mm

This is mated to a nitto 65 but I may need to switch to a 0 setback

I've switched to 48cm Noodles on my Black Mountain Monstercross. I've
previously used Albastaches and before that had Nitto B132s, 44cm, which
are roughly 40cm at the hoods, so I'm going 8cm wider with Noodles.
With the B132s, I was using an 11cm stem. With a 10cm stem and the Noodles,

Re: [RBW] Re: Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-05-21 Thread travis.ha...@gmail.com
The first bike of the modern age I bought bore two old skool prophylactics on
the tubs: thorn scrapers resting gently on the surfaces of the tire treads.
Because it is the second and subsequent rotation of the tire that is mostly
responsive for driving the point of the glass or goathead in, flicking them off
stops most punctures from developing.
They used to mount to the fork brake bolts. I see a patent illustration in
which they are mounted with adhesive to the frame.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-05-21 Thread Patrick Moore
50 psi in tubes with sealant has worked very well for me, better with
Orange Seal, even, than with Stan's, so I can't add anything useful to your
conundrum.

In many thousands of miles of tubeless and sealant (Stan's, later OS) I've
had 1 puncture that Orange Seal could not seal securely; this was caused I
think by a sharp pebble, and resulted in a hole that was certainly larger
than a goathead prick, but also certainly less than 2 mm in diameter. When
it happened, the Furious Fred had less than 25 psi in it, and pumping and
spinning sealed it after several "pump 'n' spin" cycles -- I lost a lot of
OS and added more when I got home. But a few weeks later, when, for some
reason I forget, I pumped the tire to 35 psi, it blew out in a gusher of
fluid after I had ridden no more than 1 mile.

This was in a tire that had over 2K miles in it using sealant, so a skin
had plenty of time to form.

FWIW, there are plug kits made for such bicycle tubeless tire punctures,
similar to those for car tires. I keep one in my Matthews's kitbag, though
I've not so far used it.

Lum,

It depends on how big your multi-tool, rain jacket and lunch are. I just
did a test run, and I can pack my spurcyle multitool, park patchkit,
schwable SV14 tube, rolled up brake cable, & phone with plenty of space
left. I think if I got a packable rain jacket and if my lunch was a modest
PB, with a bag of almond nuts or beef jerky it would fit. I don't have a
mini pump to test it. My pump is on my frame. I prefer my food in a front
bag anyways.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-05-21 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Patrick, I was running around 50-55 psi in the tube. The puncture happened
while on chip seal. The Hilsen is now re-imagined as a fenderless, mixed
terrain bike now with the Snoqualmies (which, incidentally, fit by just a tiny
hair, maybe 2mm, and an out of true wheel will bring me to a grinding halt.)
I've got Velocity Synergy wheels so not sure if they're tubeless compatible. On
another note, about the lower pressures needed for tubeless, I think I've
decided that it is my weight (230 +/-) combined with my propensity to run my
Compass at the lowest possible pressure, that has caused me so much grief with
worn out sidewalls, so I think for now I'm going to run a bit more pressure
than in the past. I may get more wear that way (rear Babyshoe Pass on the MAP
lasted about 1500 miles before sidewall cut appeared.) Hopefully I can get the
sealant thing dialed in and learn to love it.

Ha! Thank you all for taking some time to give some feedback. I am very
happy that this devolved into an "opinionated discussion" about
bickering. That's why you all make me smile... ;^)

So - here are my current thoughts:

FS (etc.) = A nice value added aspect of the list. There is a tag, which
helps those not interested skip over, and those who are searching cluster
the results.

Posting said FS (etc.) content = A privilege. Earned by positive
contributions to the group for ~30 days or so.

^^^ Above will mean that a little tighter "non-moderated" process for folks
who do not actively post.

Transactional Behavior = Don't commit if you aren't going to follow
through. Communicate quickly and clearly via direct channels. But
understand that sometimes life does happen and be gracious if necessary.

Original Poster Housekeeping = No more than one bump a week. If you have
had to bump more than three times, maybe something isn't clear or the
market is trying to tell you something. CLEARLY MARK "SOLD" when SOLD. Ok
to leave the listings up as it creates a reference for others.

Due Diligence/Caveat Emptor = Whoever is parting with the money (or goods
in a Trade) should engage in all the current due diligence practices to
protect themselves. Buyer assumes all risk.

I'm going to update the description . Thank you all for taking the time to
respond.

Re: [RBW] Riv complete: appropriate mechanical expectations?

2018-05-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I've received only 1 built bike from Rivendell, and that was a former floor
model, but it was impeccably assembled; in particular, the IRD cantis were
set up so that they were the best brakes I've ever used (I've not used
hydraulic disks) in power, modulation, and feel, bar none.

My frames at least from Riv had all been frame savered.

But surely, it shouldn't be hard to see if it has been properly assembled
and lubed?

pretty clear Berkeley was tired of getting beat, and was gunning for us
with their massive team. There were 5 league races, and while all of them
were great, none of them was perfect. Something went wrong each time

Race 1: Nitzan missed it for a religious ceremony. Enzo finished third in
his race, not realizing he had a broken collarbone. We were 2nd place
Race 2: Enzo missed the race with his broken collarbone. Rainy conditions
slowed down our top varsit boys. We were 2nd place
Race 3: Enzo missed the race with his shoulder. Maddie had a mechanical
in the last mile and finished 2nd instead of her normal 1st. We were 3rd
in the race, 2nd overall
Race 4: Enzo was back, but had to start in the very back of the field due
to having so few points. Maria was nipped at the line for 1st, the only
race she didn't win. Claire missed the race for a family event. We were
3rd in the race, 2nd overall
Race 5: Almost everyone had their perfect race. We won JV Girls and
Sophomore Girls. We got a 3rd in Freshman Girls and a 4th in JV Girls. We
got a 2nd in Varsity Boys, Sophomore Boys and Freshman Boys. We got a 10th
in Varsity Boys as well. All we needed to beat Salinas was a decent
showing from our small but strong JV boys, but Tal, our top rider, switched
bikes right before the start and had a derailer problem. He switched bikes
again, started 3 minutes behind the entire field, had the ride of his life
to finish 6th anyway. Then the 10 minute penalty for switching bikes
placed him 18th. He could have won that day. Because of his low showing
we placed second to Salinas, 14 points behind them, out of ~4000 total
points. We maintained our 2nd place finish in League

At State Championships, three Leagues race together: SoCal, NorCal North,
and NorCal South. The three leagues are roughly the same size and
strength, traditionally. So it was pretty normal to expect that if you
finished 5th in League, you were probably going to finish 15th in State.
The best El Cerrito has ever done was 10th as a team. Our goal was to be
the top team from our league. In order to keep the fields relatively
manageable, only the top ~60% of riders are allowed to compete. Each of
the 11 races are limited to a max field of 100, and all of them had about
80 riders in them, so it was a big event. It was hosted in Petaluma, so it
was the first time this season that our racers got to sleep in their own
beds. Things started great with the girls:

Maddie, who was first overall in League for JV Girls, finished 4th.
Claire, who was 6th overall in League for JV Girls, finished 6th! Amazing
Maria, who was first in League in Sophomore Girls, finished 3rd

That was amazing. The next wave was the Sophomore Boys, who kept it going

Nitzan was 6th overall in League, and finished on the podium in 5th
Keith was 8th overall in League, and finished 10th racing on my personal
bike (Yes, I have the 10th fastest mountain bike in the State of
California, and I can prove it)

Freshman Boys was another slog for Enzo because he again had to race from
the back of the pack but plowed through a huge field to finish 12th

Finally, the JV and Varsity Boys went off, and we got three more amazing
rides

Tal was 6th overall in JV Boys in League and finished 11th in the State
Evan was 10th overall in League for Varsity Boys and finished 20th
Matt was 5th overall in League for Varsity Boys and finished 5th in a
photo-finish for 4th

It was a near-perfect performance for our team, the first nearly perfect
day all season. Salinas was 6th as a team, Berkeley was 8th, and Albany
was 9th, but we made our goal as the top team from NorCal-South.
NorCal-North was won by Tamalpais High School, but we beat them, too.
SoCal has a number of powerhouse teams, led by Newbury Park, but we beat
them also. Many of these teams were fielding 50-60 racers. We had 16
racers and placed SECOND overall in the state of California. We were only
behind Marin County perennial behemoth, Sir Francis Drake High School. The
Drake Pirates are the team that everyone in California wants to be, and we
were right on them.

I'm over the moon with pride about how hard our kids and coaches worked.
We had a huge asset by having a ton of ride leaders, so our training rides
were often one adult with two or three kids, or two adults with 4 or 5
kids. This allowed us to get a ton of work done with almost no standing
around.

A few years ago I had some foot trouble and I tried these.
https://www.powersteps.com/pinnacle.html/

If you’re familiar with an orthotic insert these are similar.
The part that is under the ball of the foot is pliable but arch to heel is
stiff. I think if you pedaled midfoot these might help. Ball of the foot
pedaling probably not so much.
I’ve never tried it but I think these might work with sandals.
Good Luck

[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-21 Thread Steven Seelig
Compared to a $600 Bike Friday tandem, my suggestion will be in the
stratospheric realm. For my young son and me, we invested in a Co-Motion
tandem, the Torpedo model where the stoker seat can be raised from 4 foot
something rider up to 6 feet. We also got S couplers so we can fit into
two suitcases for travel. It is super fantastic, and rides really as smooth
as butter - Riv-like if you would.

The thing about a tandem with couplers is that only one wheel needs to fit
in each suitcase, making the loading process a heckuva lot easier than
loading a single, where the two wheel stuff gets pretty tight. I would say
that the breakdown and assembly are about the same hour as with the Bike
Friday. Where it is not as good is being able to stuff the tandem into the
trunk of a car, so if you have a sedan, the Bike Friday would work. But if
like most 'Mericans you have an SUV or a station wagon like me, just detach
the front section and the bike fits nicely. BTW: it breaks into 3 section.

Price is an issue, of course, with a new bike being in the 5 grand range.
I am told (by the dealer!?) that coupled tandems do hold their value, to
which I can attest only to their rarity. I just couldn't find another like
this in the used market.

Aside from the fact that my stoker son is 9, and getting him to pedal
steadily is a chore, the bike is a pleasure. Let's see how many more years
I get from it until he is ready to ride 50 mile days on his own bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-05-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Good point. OTOH, getting a skin inside a tube, where sealant dries far
more slowly IME than in a tube, might take longer than in a bare tire. How
long does this take in your experience?

With higher pressures, sealant doesn't seem to require "skinning" to work
inside a tube.

Must cut an older tube open one day to see what's inside. I know with
Stan's, the sealant formed little rubber marbles after 12 or 18 months.

[RBW] Riv complete: appropriate mechanical expectations?

2018-05-21 Thread Rod Holland
I've just taken delivery of a Clem-L complete, a gift for my girlfriend. As
I get set to attach pedals, saddle, bell, etc., it occurs to me to ask what
people's experience with the mechanical preparation of Rivendell completes
has been. Should I expect that everything that should be lubed, has been
lubed? Do I need to second-guess the build? I've never heard stories of
that sort here, so I'm guessing not. What are people's expectations for
finishing/prepping a newly-delivered Riv complete bike?

Related question: does Riv normally frame-save their complete bikes?

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-21 Thread Dave Grossman
I will surely give him a call. I have a feeling the 61 is going to be the
way to go. Every time I find a frame that I think will work for me stack
and reach wise I go back to thinking, why am I looking around when the
Roadini already exists. It is so ridiculous that such a simple steel road
bike with standard threadings and parts can be so outside the box for
sizing these days. And when I find something in the price range of the
Roadini, like the barrage of used titanium road frames on eBay, I come back
to three main points:

1 Max clearance on most of those is at best, a 28, which is nothing on the
Roadini.

2. I will really be pushing the limits of what I want for stack and reach
and compromising perhaps the most important aspect of a bike for me these
days, comfort. Seems kind of silly.

3. I am not going to crit race anytime soon. Nuff said.

The BMC road disc is pretty sweet. Not opposed to discs at all, but
honestly, it still doesn't have the all day stack and reach comfort of the
Roadini. Seems like I keep coming back to that. I've owned enough bikes
over the years to know that I've been on too many ill fitting bikes to make
that compromise again.

[RBW] Re: Barsack (sackville) help needed

2018-05-21 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Lum,

A thin foam sheet. (Fabric backed foam head liner might work). Closed cell
or Neoprene. Neoprene is a little heavier. You can find thin closed cell
foam at Fleabay. Turn your bag inside out. Cut the foam to fit. Mask off
the zipper and anywhere you don't want spray glue. Spray the foam and bag
interior with contact cement and carefully wrap the foam on. Carefully, as
you only have one shot at this. Let dry. Remove tape. Turn back right side
out. You might want to fill the bag tightly while inside out, to help put
on the foam straight and without bubbles or wrinkles. ..If gluing your bag
sounds too scary and drastic, you can spray glue a flexible plastic
stiffener to the foam, roll it, insert and let expand to fit (with the foam
side exposed to the contents). I would add some peel and stick velcro to
keep the plastic from rotating around and covering up the zipper if the
natural expansion fit isn't enough to hold it in place. Foam is key, as the
noise will drive you nuts with crap bouncing around on the bare plastic.
