[RBW] Re: Brooks vs Berthoud Saddle Setback

Craig

Do you how much further back the spin goes than the B17?

I measured the distance in the rails available for travel in a B17 and a VO
Model 3 and got
VO Mod 3, 8.4cm of total distance
B17, 6.4cm total distance
or the VO had 2.0cm more travel. Of course the post clamp width affects
the actual distance the saddle can move.

[RBW] Re: Commuter Tire for Hunq

2020-06-09 Thread Dave Grossman
I believe a 29er or 700c is known as a 28 in Europe. As such, Schwalbe
designates their "29er" tires as "28"..

I have liked them a lot actually. I have used quite a few Schwalbe tires
over the years, including Marathon, Marathon Plus, Marathon Supreme, Big
Apple, Fat Frank, Kojack, Sammy Slicks, Thunder Burts, Big Ones.the
list goes on. The Big Ben was up there with usual Schwalbe characteristics
of long lasting, great puncture protection, good grip, etc. They aren't
the lightest tires, but this isn't a race bike either.

I haven't purchased new tires in a few years so I am totally out of the
loop as to what is new. I know the Rene Herse/Compass are all the rage but
I can't spend that much on tires.

As for my preferences, I most want a combination of decent weight, puncture
protection, and low rolling resistance.

2020-06-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Dave,

I presume you mean 29 (700) x 2? Have you liked your Big Bens?

You may want to be more specific in what is important to you (smooth,
supple, or no flats ever as the two extreme examples). Folks here commute
on Rene Hearse ELs, or the beefiest Schwalbe there is. Here is the dizzying
array of Schalbe touring tires:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/road_tires

Of course, with Rene Herse's Endurence + tires, you can have better flat
protection in a still quite supple tire.

Personally, I go with the most supple tire I can without needing to change
more than 4 flats a year. So far that generally means 2 flats or less a
year and the most supple tires. Now that I've written this and am
aproaching needing to change out my rear tire I've doomed myself to a flat
here soon. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: In Praise of Road Bikes with Road Tires

2020-06-09 Thread Mark Roland
Even with the same tubing and geo, a different size frame will have
different characteristics as far as liveliness. I bought a Woodrup Giro for
a tour of Tuscany a dozen or so years ago, all 531ST. One of the few bikes
I ever actively disliked, felt sluggish and dead. But it was a 57cm frame,
so naturally going to be stiffer. And the tubes are quite a bit thicker,
with typical 531 tubeset of the day having a top tube with a .8 belly, and
ST 1.0.

On the other hand, my 531 Ron Kitching is a superb rider. And is getting a
long-awaited, well-deserved rebuild...soon. It will be fun!

[RBW] Re: The Sound of Silence - Just Ride Quietly

2020-06-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
All my bikes are as silent as I can make them. My QB with Steilacoms is
fixed and as close to silent as a supple knobby tire can get, quieter on
dirt/gravel and trail than the slick Rene Herse tires. My GBW 2.8" tires
are noticeably louder below 50˚F as the rubber hardens, otherwise
surprisingly quiet-ish for huge knobbies. In general, I've learned that a
quiet bike is a happy bike.

I also really like the Sony RX100 but I don't believe it has the timer

Re: [RBW] Re: Rene Herse Fender Install for QB

2020-06-09 Thread Steve Palincsar

Don't forget the rat tail file.

The drilling is easy.  The measuring to get the holes in the right
places, now that takes patience and repetition.  You can't measure it
all at once.  You have to mount one point, measure the next, remove,
drill, install, mark the next point, remove, drill, reinstall.  That's
because the mounting changes the shape.

Also, you don't want to use the stays to pull the fender into the proper
shape, like you would do with a plastic fender.  You've got to alter
tthe profile of the fender by either spreading out the edges or
squeezing them together. a little bit at a time all over the curve of
the fender.

[RBW] The Sound of Silence - Just Ride Quietly

2020-06-09 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi Marty,
I share your appreciation for silent propulsion. My current silent meditative
steed is an early 70’s FUJI Finest fixed gear with Conti Speed Ride tires.
Unfortunately just today they sprayed many of my roads with tar and stones to
extend the life. It will be very difficult to be silent until the stones settle
into the tar and the loose stones are forced off the road. I also second night
riding in the country. Very calming and exhilarating.
I am intrigued by belt drive also, but fixed is already silent.

I have fenders on my QB. For me, a clean fender line in the back was more
important that the ease of installing the rear wheel. I need to let the air out
to get the wheel out (not a problem if it’s flat already) and in. Once it’s in,

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse Fender Install for QB

2020-06-09 Thread Clayton Scott
Not sure if it matters, but you would not need a power drill. The aluminum
fenders are fairly soft. A hammer and punch or even sharp nail and a hand
reamer will be sufficient for the holes.

Here the a similar reamer to the one I use:
https://www.harborfreight.com/t-handle-reamer-66936.html?cid=paid_google|||66936_source=google_medium=cpc_campaign=_content==CjwKCAjw5vz2BRAtEiwAbcVIL1GFqSHOzVIUOm0tyo2HBV8Hm29UvrBsIqHaIleP61p1Cb8943NAZxoCPhUQAvD_BwE

The installation process may look a bit daunting but it is a fairly
straight forward operation. There is a BQ that has a tutorial in it. Would
be happy to scan and send them to you.

Clayton Scott.

of the middle cogs, (not sure which) and a single TA zephyr ring

biking for me, and a goal of mine in general, is to ride as
quietly as possible. Similar to sculling on flat water, which I
have done my share of, the feeling of self propulsion in total
silence intrigues and pleases me.

On gravel, the Rivendell makes very little sound while pedaling or
not, just a light crackle/hiss from the tires. (700c Big Ben's in
this case) But on pavement, damn if all sound doesn't evaporate
entirely! I love that! Granted, at 64  - and having played drums
for many years in my youth - my hearing is diminished somewhat to
begin with. Regardless, my mission to ride silently appears to be
achieved. Having said that, there may be room to improve. I
suppose a fixed gear hub would eliminate any chance of pawl noise,
and smooth tires may take it down a notch too. I have a White ENO
flipflop hub laced to a rim that would work, so that may be my
next experiment.

Any other ideas for silent running are welcome.

Re: [RBW] Next Level Clementine

2020-06-09 Thread Leah Peterson
I 100%, wholeheartedly agree, DP. Truly. The thing about a bike becoming dear
is that it gets that way because you have a long-term relationship with it. I
rode the Betty from 2012-2020. And for all but the last 8 months of its
existence, it was my ONLY bike. It was like an extension of me and we covered a
lot of time and territory together. The Betty saw me through the kid-hauling
years and the school-age years and our many cross-country road trips home. It
carried my dog in the front basket until that very dog died July 2019. That
Betty never imagined it would be upstaged by a comfortable Clem, but it was,
and I find myself starting over.

I’ve got a LOT of miles on my Clementine now, but new parts means I’m still
getting acquainted with it. We get along great, the two of us, and I don’t see
myself changing anything else unless it’s to lighten some parts when the old
ones wear out. I have come to find I really like “light” where I can get it on
a steel frame, even though that is not a popular opinion here. But the goal is
to feel about it as I did its predecessor, which is as if the bike was made for
me. And I think I’m nearly there.

Doug - I ride an average of 10 miles per day. That’s way, way up from my bike
commuting days. I used to ride with the boys to school and back, so only 4
miles. But now I ride all the time, whenever I can. “Are you going out on your
two-wheeler?” my husband will ask. “Heading out on the old dusty trail?” 藍 He’s
accepted this is just part of our life now. Sometimes he tags along on his
ebike and embarasses me with his portable speaker and unfortunate choice of
music. When you’re that comfortable on a bike, you can just keep going.

One funny story...I’ve shared on this List that I’ve evolved from Bicycle Belle
to Lone Wolf Leah. We were riding our bikes on a cool Saturday morning when we
encountered a group of about 20 roadies pulled over and chatting. All their
heads followed us as we went by. You’ve seen what I’ve got going on...Oakley
robot glasses like theirs, steel frame nothing like theirs, goofy polka dot
helmet, basket in front, colors sparking from the wheels... My husband (who
anyone can look at and know EXACTLY where he fits in the velotaxonomy) looked
at me and said, “I don’t think they know what to make of you.”

I remember Doug ! The wondrous days of walking into the shop and seeing the
magical SunTour board filled with cogs, bodies spacers and micro spacers... and
the charts. I still have a couple of those customs as well as some other stock
ST freewheels I've kept since the 80's. I do love that distinct sound of them
freewheeling.

I so wish some company would make bike parts that were timeless, so to speak.
Imagine still being able to get all those great parts from the 70's,80's and
90's today. Enduring Durables !

I found fotos of the HG500 cassette back sides btw, they have flush rivets that
will require some drillin'. Too bad Sunrace doesn't make cassettes that use
even numbered cogs as their non-spider cassettes use a single easy to remove
torx bolt to hold them together.

You should have a kickstand plate to screw into at front/bottom so that's the
first drilled hole. Then mount it at the brake bridge, does this model have a
fender braze-on there? If so that's your next drilling spot, or slide a clip
on. The only thing to worry about after that is to keep the fender stays long
enough that the fender will kinda stick out in the back, to clear sliding the
wheel out.

 the following items to report:

I own a brand new SRAM PG950 cassette in 11-34. It disassembles into
individual cogs and the 11-34 includes a 20. I disassembled mine to
confirm it. You can sometimes find a PG950 for as little as $20. Here is
a link to the SRAM page that lists all the cogs. My guess is Patrick
 Moore
would use at most 3 of the 9 cogs, so it might be too expensive for him:

 https://www.sram.com/en/sram/models/CS-PG-950-A1

I own several Deore XT 10 speed 11-32 cassettes. There are two
carriers, with three cogs each. The smaller of the two carriers has a
18-20-22, permanently and inextricably attached to a carrier. Even though
Patrick Moore needs a 20 and a 22, I suspect he cannot stomach the jump
from 18 to 20. The four remaining loose cogs would be 11, 12, 14 and 16,
so Patrick Moore could possibly get 5 usable cogs out of a $50 cassette.

I researched the cheap Shimano HG-500 10 speed cassette. I am 95% sure
it can be completely disassembled into individual cogs, and it costs $37
 at
Jenson USA. The full cog progression is:11-12-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-32

I recommend you put your hands on a 10-speed HG500 and confirm you can
either unscrew a pin or grind off a rivet to get the cogs apart. If you
can, then you could get a bunch of matched 10-speed spacers plus as many
 as
6 great cogs all for $37. Once you confirm that you can take it apart,
 you
 should buy 4 of them.

[RBW] Rene Herse Fender Install for QB

2020-06-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
These are on the list to do in the near future. However, if I have to get into
metal drilling or cutting, I'm going to need to make arrangements for someone
to help/do the install.

What non-standard issues will I run into installing these:
https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/fenders/rene-herse-smooth-fenders-700c-for-48-52-mm-tires-h80-700c/
on a 66cm silver (final run) QB?

2020-06-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
I thought my idea was such a good one that I did in fact order three of
each from Nashbar. That's a calculated risk because I am not 100% certain
that the HG500 is disassemble-able.

Assuming it works out as planned the next step is to start designing my cog

[RBW] Re: Cameras for Biking

2020-06-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Great info, lads and lassies! Thank you!

I'm delighted to hear fans for the mirrorless system. Today's ride in 3" of
snow, with clumps and powder blowing off the trees as I took photos,
reminded me of the experiment this is. To get weatherproof mirrorless is
pricy, so my choice to go with the Olympus trailing edge tech in the hope
it works, but also with an eye on an adventure camera (yeah, that's a thing
.. weren't all cameras adventure cameras back in the day? Sardonic grin.):
Olympus Tough TG 6. Time will tell.

On the tripod side, I was delighted to find that Velbon still makes them,
still in aluminum, and basically the same as I used for years but somehow
misplaced. My GorillaPod fell apart to the point of unusable: the plethora
of ball and socket joints just doesn't hold up to abuse well.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Cameras for Biking

2020-06-09 Thread 'hobie' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have been shooting for almost 45 years. I worked with the best as an
assitant NYC from 85/95. My camera of choice was the Pentax 6x7. A beast to
lug around. I briefly had the Pentax 645. Worked and loved the Hasselblad
but very costly. I used almost all makes and models as an assistant. Most
photogs back then used Hasselblad in the studio, Nikon on location. Nikon
was my first camera at the age of 15. Great company. I stopped shooting
seriously when film just about died. 2005? Digital was very expensive for a
quality system and didn't have what I wanted in a camera. A simple, manual
version of a film camera. Around 3 years ago I started shooting again.
Prices had really come down on good camera so I tried the Nikon 1 V1 and a
few lenes. No regrets on this excellent mirrorless small sensor camera. I
have since sold that system and moved on to the Nikon full frame Z6. The V1
is a great value compact system although no longer made.. Nikon also has
free software for their users. I've attached my pinterest page. A lot the
images shot I used the Nikon V1. Good luck. There are so many great cameras
now. https://www.pinterest.com/travelgears3/nyc/

[RBW] WTB: Chris King 1" headset misc. bits

2020-06-09 Thread Joe Bunik
Hi gang,

Stirring the pot a little bit with some of my project frames/forks and
was wondering if any of you might be able to assist me with a few
small Chris King headset bits.

Any of these could help facilitate a fork-swap scenario I am
contemplating, and all involve 1" steerers, FWIW.

1) *SILVER* 1" threadless upper race, and (if you have one) the proper
top-cap for fitting to a 1" fork (1-1/8" have a lip + oversize O.D. /
also don't play well with 1" spacers).

and/or,

2) *BLACK* 1" threaded (2Nut) upper race and the matching top lock-nut.

alternatively,

3) Silver (or any color...), 1" threaded *GRIP-NUT* headset, complete.

4) Chris King 1" crown race.

Thanks!!!

[RBW] The Sound of Silence - Just Ride Quietly

2020-06-09 Thread Marty Gierke, Stewartstown PA
Might be a first for this topic. I was out on my All Rounder this weekend,
a local rail trail that has sections of pavement here and there. My current
set up is one speed, using a Paul Melvin matched up to an eight speed
cogset on an XT cassette hub out back - one of the middle cogs, (not sure
which) and a single TA zephyr ring up front - a 36 I think. Anyway, one of
the best things about biking for me, and a goal of mine in general, is to
ride as quietly as possible. Similar to sculling on flat water, which I
have done my share of, the feeling of self propulsion in total silence
intrigues and pleases me.

On gravel, the Rivendell makes very little sound while pedaling or not,
just a light crackle/hiss from the tires. (700c Big Ben's in this case) But
on pavement, damn if all sound doesn't evaporate entirely! I love that!
Granted, at 64 - and having played drums for many years in my youth - my
hearing is diminished somewhat to begin with. Regardless, my mission to
ride silently appears to be achieved. Having said that, there may be room
to improve. I suppose a fixed gear hub would eliminate any chance of pawl
noise, and smooth tires may take it down a notch too. I have a White ENO
flipflop hub laced to a rim that would work, so that may be my next
experiment.

Any other ideas for silent running are welcome.

Marty

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2020-06-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
That Polyvalent Low-Kicker is a great looking bike, in my opinion. I think
it illustrates how much better the Gallop may look with drop bars closer to
level with the saddle. Some of you think a bike looks weird when a tube
curves. Some of you don't like gaps that are bigger than you are used to.
Some don't like to see drop bars way above the saddle (or way below).

I'll give both machines (Gallup and Polyvalent low-kicker) a serious look
when their respective Geo charts come out.

[RBW] Re: In Praise of Road Bikes with Road Tires

2020-06-09 Thread Jason Fuller
Funny, I've been wondering the same sort of thing with my Hillborne. In the
dozens of bikes I've owned over the years, none have had this magical
ability to just gingerly float over everything like the Hillborne. I had
the exact same build (incl wheels and tires) on a Soma Grand Randonneur
previous to the Sam, and while that bike rode nicely, it did not have this
quality. My Clem, despite much larger tires, does not have this
quality--and both have nearly identical CS lengths (455 vs. 460).

The only thing left that it could be are the seat stays, but it's hard to
imagine that they're doing this much. It has to be a culmination of a bunch
of small contributors, I expect.

[RBW] Re: In Praise of Road Bikes with Road Tires

2020-06-09 Thread ted
My Bombadil has Pacenti Quasi-Moto tires. I would think any non uber stout
2 inch tire would behave much the same in this respect.
I have another more roadish bike with 47mm tires (wtb byway) I run at
~25psi when I want things cushy. That one does fairly well off road as well.
Keep in mind at 20 psi, 2 psi is 10%. Do the fat bike crowd run pressures
down in the single digits?
My rules of thumb are:
If your tires aren't soaking up bumps the way you want, lower the
pressure, then lower it some more until they are. (too low may not be low
enough)
If you start getting pinch flats in the process, get bigger tires. (got
the first classic pinch flat of my life yesterday, guess I should try 28mm
tires on that bike)
If you feel like your tires have too much rolling resistance, shop for
more supple tires.
I think that approach can produce satisfactory results for a lot of folks
without going beyond 28-33 mm tires. Despite the current popularity of
"wider is better" and asking "how wide is too wide?" there can be wisdom in
asking "how wide is wide enough?".
Typically it seems like tires are so much more compliant than even "std.
diameter" thin wall tubing, that softer tires dominate wrt vertical
compliance. Sounds like for you, not so much. First time for everything I
suppose.
I expect you are aware there are folks who only like more flexible extra
thin walled "standard" diameter tubed frames. Perhaps you do too. It's good
to know what one likes.
I hope the stress levels in your fork blades are well below the fatigue
limit for steel. Also that's a tall head tube, perhaps some of the flex in
your fork is in the steerer tube?
Have you seen the video of Hincapie in Paris Roubaix sitting bolt upright
with his disconnected bars in his hand as he veered into the ditch and
separated his shoulder?

I think the handling of my Bombadil is somewhat different than my other
bikes, I like it a lot for riding the hills in my local open spaces. Prefer
other bikes for riding on roads though.

My favorite type of bike! The Regular Ass Road Bike! Zippy tubing, comfy
geo for all day hustling, clearance for 32mm tires, bars just a hair
beneath the saddle height. Everyone needs one. Or, in my case, 4: my
secondhand Weigle, my Roadeo by way of Mike Godwin, my Mercian Superlight,

I'm a huge fan of these types of bikes, and the Roadeo is an outstanding

I love the micro four thirds system too. I'm a fan of the Panasonic GX
line (small form with built-in viewfinder). I have the GX1 and then
upgraded to GX8. It peaked there with the weather resistant body and was
downgraded with the GX9. The 20mm f1.7 lens is fantastic. It has a great
walk forward and backward zoom :) and is perfect for most things except
wildlife, which may flee by the zoom actuation. I use an old Lightroom

Solved! The screw on the barend shifter came loose and the components were

FWIW, a long cage 9 speed deore rear derailleur will shift at least up to a 42t

I was in the market for a smaller travel camera earlier this year and after
a week of analysis paralysis settled on the Lumix GX9 with the kit 12-60
zoom and a 20mm f1/7 prime.

As I narrowed the choices down the Sony RX100 would have been my 2nd
choice. They both get great reviews.

Sadly haven't hauled it many places yet but will keep it in a Pelican box

[RBW] Re: Cameras for Biking

2020-06-09 Thread EricP
Another vote for the Sony RX100. Even though I have a mirrorless camera,
more times than not I grab the Sony. It just works for me. The one big
downside is the small form can get slippery. Added a grip to mine. In
general will keep it on automatic and just use it without further thought.
Mine is the first generation. The newer ones have more features (like
viewfinder) and are more expensive.

All the other suggestions are also good.

Maybe it's just my eyes, but with the drop bars, it looks to be a bit of an
homage to the Charlie Cunningham bicycles of the early mountain bike era.
But different enough. If that ends up being close to the final design, I
like it. Even though I'm not looking for anything else. (Except for waiting

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO: 20 t and 22 t Shimano or Shimano-compatible cogs; also 13 t and 14 t outers

2020-06-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
At Nashbar you can buy the 11-32 for a dollar cheaper ($35.99) - LINK

And you can buy the 12-28 for $29.99 - LINK

Between those two cogsets you have every Shimano 10 speed cog covered from
11 to 23 teeth.

Buy three of each and this would be your 10 speed shimano cog board:

3 x 11T first position
3 x 12T first position
3 x 12T second position
3 x 13T second position
6 x 14T
3 x 15T
3 x 16T
3 x 17T
3 x 18T
3 x 19T
3 x 20T
3 x 21T
3 x 22T
3 x 23T
6 x 25T
6 x 28T
3 x 32T

That would be a total of 60 cogs, for under $200. If you were to sell a
few 28T and all the 32s to your friends for $5 apiece, and use the 11T's as
christmas ornaments, you could be down to under $150 invested. Assuming
you have the 13/14 situation covered, then you could have your ideal 13-25
10sp, plus an essentially effortless exchange of a 20 for a 28 as a
hillclimber event setup. You could even run a 14-23 10 speed straight
block if you so choose, or a 13-22, or a 12-21.

Yes ...nothing to do with tires on this frame... I've had Specialized

then the ride was good. t seems starting with suitable tubing and design

[RBW] Re: In Praise of Road Bikes with Road Tires

2020-06-09 Thread Garth
Like you DP, a jittery ride, for lack of an all encompassing term, just
doesn't work for me either. That's likely why I've preferred road riding so
much as I've never had a suitable frame or maybe tires for that matter for
my local not-so-maintained township "roads". I'm going to try out some new
tires if I can ever decide on some.

You rode a Susie too at RBWHQ, yes ? Was it at least somewhat vertically
compliant, springy, flexy ... you know there's a million names for it I
suppose !

[RBW] Re: In Praise of Road Bikes with Road Tires

2020-06-09 Thread Mark Roland
Lots of variables to consider--frame geometries and tubing/layups, tire
width, construction, pressures; rider style and weight; terrain and road
conditions; position of the planets, and so on.

I like wide mostly these days, but getting on some skinny rubber is fun,
and it's about the difference. You can't appreciate one without the other,
and they are both fun--all the tens of thousands of people riding on 25mm
tires can't be in that much pain!

Re: [RBW] Lightening up my Joe Appaloosa--a full makeover. AHH--a partial makeover. Thanks to Analog Cycles.

2020-06-09 Thread Roberta
Patrick,

The kickstand is a Defary removable kickstand (so technically not a
"kickstand"), about $18 on Amazon. I'm not sure this will work because the only
way to get to it was through my history:
https://www.amazon.com/Defary-Removable-Kickstand-Stainless-Material/dp/B074T8V8PH/ref=pd_rhf_ee_p_img_1?_encoding=UTF8=1=C69TEJKKFPBD8H5GS203
 .

It's very sturdy and strong and doesn't sag under the bicycles weight like some
of the other removable ones do.

After a week of not being able to ride my bikes, I took my AHH out last night
and I'm still giddy with happiness on the new ride quality. Joe Appaloosa
tonight!

Re: [RBW] Next Level Clementine

2020-06-09 Thread Roberta
Leah,

I will never tire of looking at this lovely bike.

Remember when you put on the B68 saddle and were concerned that it would not
look right with your bike of 50 shades of blue? Well, I thought it always
looked nice. But now, having the reddish brown saddle and hub shiner mid-bike,
with the reds and oranges at the "ends" really enhances the color scheme. I
LOVE it.

I think Joe said something like this above, very colorful, but still classy.

And best of all, you love the ride even more than before.

Thanks, the HG500 looks like a good option at about $6 per 10 sp cog. I'm
near to buying -- something. Report at 10.
