The chain holder is a brilliant idea! (I will have to try it on mine.)
A meticulous build -- I like all the set screws protecting threads.

2023-09-15 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I, too, was curious about this but wanted to find out the size of Calvin's
AHH. So, I did some RBW list searching and found that Calvin ordered it in
Nov 2021 and had it built up by early Jan 2022. There are some nice
pictures in emails that he posted as part of a Homer thread on Jan 9, 2022.
(BTW, it is a blue 51cm.)
He also has a striking, gray Roadeo that is featured in the Riv employee
bikes gallery.
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news/calvins-55cm-roadeo-83cm-pbh

He started working there as a bike packer late last year.
I've worked in bike shops and it is not unusual to buy a new bike or frame
at an employee discount (probably 30%), build it up, then flip it for
basically the cost of another new one. (My problem was becoming attached to
them!)

Very clean job, Leah! Impressive work!
Make sure that you can turn the fork fully left and right without stressing
the wires that connect to the front light.
Agree with you and Joe that grey will call less attention to the wiring and
blend in with the rack a bit.

Interesting to see that the chart shows a 2.5" max tire width for the
Gus/Susie lineup.
The RivBike site says 2.6" max and when the frames first came out they were
expected to fit up to 2.8". That was ... optimistic!
And, the website no longer shows a 60cm option for the GBW frames.

Hello! I picked up a Susie in the last run and have been using it as my
mountain bike. That said, I have not ridden a suspension bike in quite a
while. I did see the email that a second run was going to happen. It was
supposed to be spring this year I think but since the ones I got didn’t
show up till then I’m sure it will be next year at this point, no mention
 of them for a while.

 I haven’t ridden a Clem L so I can’t say, I do have a Clem H though. I
love my Clem! The H has a little bit steeper head tube, the new Clem L
seems to be a slightly closer spec to a Gus or Susie as far as head tube
 angle and fork rake.

My Susie feels like riding on a cloud compared to the Clem and I don’t
think it is just the tire size but I’m sure it plays a good part of it.
 The
extra height of the BB on the Susie is very welcome in the chunky stuff as
well. The tubes on the Susie feel full of like and spring forward when I
get on it. I ride the Clem daily towing my daughter around and it is
perfect for that. Load the Clem up with whatever and it is stable as can
be. The Susie has more flex. Not sure if a Gus feels stiffer but I love
 the
 way the Susie rides.

My Clem has an albatross bar and I have bosco’s on the Susie. So not a
fair comparison in upright sitting. The Susie is very upright and my Clem
not so much. Funny thing, I thought I was faster on the Clem. This week I
am using the Susie and I’m actually slightly faster on it while feeling
like I’m not working as hard. According to my gps data on my usual daily
routes. Only 2 days so far so I’ll see if that holds true all week.

You won’t match a full squish bike on a Gus or Susie but the riding is
still a blast! Just different. I had a jones LWB complete and I would
definitely recommend the Susie over that. Jones makes a great bike in
theory, but I think they (the completes at least) are wastefully
 overbuilt.
It was several lbs heavier than my Susie and the slowest I have ever been
while riding a bike. My Susie has a more plush ride than the Jones did and
is a better ride in all ways.

Not sue I’ve said anything useful in my rambling but I highly recommend
the Susie! I’m sure the Gus is equally awesome though! I think if you have
your Clem set up for commuting and the Gus/Susie set up for trails there
isn’t too much of an overlap to justify one.

Although I think the brass washers with raw metal frame would look great,
I’ve taken a different approach to rear fender attachment to the chain stay
bridge.

My solution has been to buy a hardware store variety-pack of plumbing
washers. There are usually multiples of several types and the cylindrical
or conical ones work well and often have an M5 or M4 size hole through the
center.

I sandwich the fender material between two washers and put an M4 or M5 bolt
through them and the chain-stay bridge with a Nylock nut at one end.

The compressible washers provide a yielding surface that is a bit
friendlier to plastic (and, I’d assume aluminum) fenders, in the long run.

I’d include some pictures but I’m on the east coast while my bikes are in
Berkeley. Will try to repost once I’m back home.

PS: Found a photo of that area on my errand bike. Two conical washers on
one side, a cylindrical and a flat stainless under the bolt head. Difficult to
attach from iPad….

I’ve tried in vain to find these locally. I ask for “funky textured

 I

incorrect! It’s a mystery. Riv used many of them on this Glorius build.
 I’d
very much appreciate help knowing what they’re called and where I can
procure some. They do their job very well. Thanks!

Not sure that it is totally definitive but I expect the Toyo AHH to have

but I can do light touring and backpacking with my Homer if I desire. I
rotate it in my commuter stable with the Hunq and I end up riding it quite
often. I currently have it set up with Crust Towel bars (with a large
 Fabs
in the middle!), VO fenders, and 44s. I have it maxed out, but it is such
a great ride. I've thought about getting a stripped road bike but the
Homer is so versatile. I think if I didn't have the Hunq, I'd be more
inclined to get a Sam. But if you already have a hauler an older Homer is
the way to go. I have a 63, which I am on the small side for with a 90
pbh, but it fits great and I love the ride. My Hunq is a 58 and while I
can clear a 62 (I've ridden the 62 before) I love having the clearance
 that
a slightly smaller frame allows for the rough stuff.

[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-08-29 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Got this today in email from Acorn bags:

*Hi everyone,*

*Our BLACK WAXED CANVAS

 bags
will be restocked—in limited quantities—this Wednesday, August 31, at
approx. 9am Pacific Time.
(Please note that our upcoming Trunk Bag is not
included in this batch.) *
*https://www.acornbags.com*

I have a few of the medium Acorn saddle bags and like them a lot for their
size, waxed canvas material and construction. The larger, transverse
version looks good but I have no experience with it.
The old Swift, small Zeitgeist is a big improvement over the Carradice
Barley I have and my small BxB "Nino" is beautifully designed and made.
I have the Outer Shell Basket Bag but I don't use a basket. It mounts
nicely on a front rack, especially one of the wider ones and has a lot of
structure. It is really well thought out with a lot of features.
I usually leave the side stiffeners in the bag but not in their
compartments. It allows the bag to be more compact and carried more easily
if not full.

[RBW] Re: Carradice Bagman/SQR Questions

2022-04-27 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
re the Bagman: 16 mm of rail space is needed. The QR version only varies in
that the top piece has an extension to the rear that holds the QR mechanism
which takes the place of the saddle loops.
I have both a small BXB and a Zeitgeist and the straps that hold the flap
down can be passed out, up and over the Bagman loop which stops the saddle
bag from moving. And the bag's seat post strap usually attaches to the
Bagman loop where it transitions from vertical to horizontal so that's an
additional anchor point.
re the SQR mount: You do have to have about 4" of exposed seat post to
attach the "block" that it uses. You can get away with less -- as little as
2" is contacting the seatpost -- but it depends on the top of the seat
cluster shape below and the bottom side of the seat post clamp above.

Manager: ‘Yeah, we did, but we had to remove them. They were keeping all

[RBW] Re: FS: Carradice Bagman quick-release brackets and adapters

2022-02-04 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
The stiffness inherent in the leather straps that come with most saddle
bags is usually sufficient to create a semi-permanent loop protruding from
the bag (with buckles on the inside). If that is the case, I've found that
I can more easily attach that bag than if I'm using one with the Bagman
black plastic adapter piece in place. The adapter requires a more precise
alignment to allow the two sprung pins to slide "home."
And, as all the pieces are black, I have trouble seeing the alignment. It's
easier to see what's happening with just the straps there and you can hook
up one loop at a time.
If you still have the straps, try it!

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 55cm HillborneW

2022-02-04 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey Ahmed,
I'd agree with Bill: Put another saddle on (And, raise the seat post at
least two cm!) -- A Berthoud is worth too much and they are quite
individual.
Take the basket and rack off -- They obscure the view of the front and
represent one use of the bike that may narrow it down too much.
And, pull the bags off and offer them separately.
Now you can offer the more essential Sam.
Turn it around and get a front quarter picture and then a full drive side
picture of the bike. (NO coffee cup!!)
I'd be interested but I think I'd go for a 51cm/650b frame.

[RBW] Re: Susie v. Clem Help Me Off The Fence

2021-11-19 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm surprised that the Sam seems to weigh less than the Homer!
Were the 2015 Sam's made in Taiwan?
I have a 56 cm Toyo Homer which must be a lighter frame and fork. And, it
has lighter Pacenti Brevet wheels with Paris-Moto tubed tires. When I
weighed it a few years ago (get on digital bathroom scale with bike, weigh
again without, subtract) it had a Mark's rack, two Iris cages and a
Carradice SQR block (only) on the seat post, (might have had a Terry
"Liberator" saddle) = 24.5 lbs. Added a Topeak pump and it was 25.4 lbs. I
don't think it had fenders. It does now and I need to check which saddle,
so I should reweigh it.

For those of you interested (Quad Lock Curious), I balked at the price of
the QL and accessories for a few years then got one on a Black Friday Sale
last year.
Really good system; I like it.
That time is here again: Black Friday (early) and they've sent out the
notice of 30% off:
Check out https://www.quadlockcase.com/
BTW, the little kickstand/finger loop accessory (that you might not notice
on the site) has been very useful to me. The bump/socket on the back
otherwise destabilizes the case when you set the phone down on a flat
surface.

[RBW] Re: WTB: rack for platypus

I've been looking at the Simworks Obento rack, also made by Nitto.
Theoretically available in silver or black but rare right now.
Here's a picture of one with Wald basket:
https://thepsychicderailleur.com/product/sim-works-obento-rack/
(He has them in black)
More svelte and about $100 less than the RBW rack (which I have on my
Appaloosa and it is pretty big).
For silver, ...you'll have to wait for them to make more

Ahmed, I am forever in your debt for allowing me to wheedle it away from

It is truly a lovely bike!
Thanks much,

Re: [RBW] Sackville Question?

2021-09-15 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Here's an example of the kind of standoff that Patrick is describing, made
by Acorn in SoCal:
   https://www.acornbags.com/products/leather-stand-off-with-strap
Their strap is 11 ½" but this will depend on the length of the standoff.
Here's a saddlebag rack from Ocean Air by Nitto. It integrates with the
seat post saddle clamp and will keep the bag back away from your legs and
hold it steady:

https://store.oceanaircycles.com/products/erlen-saddle-bag-support-nitto-production
There are other Nitto models (Riv Mark's & RBW51, R14 and R10) that attach
to the bike but are out of stock or relatively rare, at least in this
country.
The Carradice Bagman supports will NOT work cleanly as they assume a
barrel-shaped saddle bag. (The Slim Sucker has a flat bottom.)

2021-07-25 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
When I tried to arrange coming to WC to see it, he replied that it had
sold. I did not ask for how much….

He’s now listed his wife’s very similar 48cm Sam, also at $2800
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/d/walnut-creek-rivendell-sam-hillborne/7356173233.html
Not as good a package as the 51: lesser rear rack, no pedals (unless you
count the single Speedplay that is inexplicably in the pictures) and no
fenders.

[RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-07-22 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
It has some additions that I would look at as bonuses beyond the usual
Roadeo frame:
Third set of water bottle braze-ons
Mid fork leg eyelets for a front rack
Two sets of rear dropout eyelets
Rack braze-ons just above the rear brake bridge "hidden" on the inside of
the seat stays
Nice!

[RBW] Re: FS: Berthoud post-mount rack/bag combo

2021-05-23 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
This is an insane deal! It's gonna cost Joe at least $25 just to ship it
and it is one of the most beautiful bags around. The color matches that of
the blue-gray Berthoud handlebar bags. When I see the Sackville TrunkSack
described as a "miniature pirate's chest," this fits the bill perfectly,
for a large pirate's overnight bag: Straps, brass buckles and rivets and
leather everywhere!
The rack is a marvel, too. No rack brazeons? No saddle loops? This rack
just needs the seat post and you can raise or lower it as much as the seat
post length allows.
I've got one here in my home office (and the rack is in the garage). The
bag would look just fine in a display case. A new one is 224.70 Euro
(without the rack).

[RBW] Re: What size are the upper/larger braze-ons on Riv seat stay?

2021-03-23 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
The barrel shaped braze-on, farther up the seat stay, just above the one
your rack is using, is an M6 x 1.0 pitch.
But, so is the upper of the two “braze-ons” at the rear dropout. (It’s
actually cast into the dropout.)
The lower of the two is M5 x 0.8. You appear to have a bolt head showing —
Is that just an M5 not truly threaded into the M6?
At least that is the case with my MIT Appaloosa, I think made in 2016 or
2017. I bought it used in 2018.

[RBW] Re: New Bike day- Red Mixte but not a Raspberry Platypus.

2021-03-04 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Linda,
Have a look at the Platypus video posted by BlueLug. The English closed
captions are really bad but the two speakers discuss and show the bracing
of the seat tube by the top tube and the twin, continuing lateral stays. It
should contribute to that frame not feeling flexy with a load, but ...
that's my speculation only!
Here's a link to that point (about 15 minutes in):
https://youtu.be/ga8o1WKWgXs?t=894
I, too, wish the 55cm Platypus was designed for 650b wheels!

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-02-24 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I’d guess they get a container load of boxed frames (including Hillbornes?)
and UPS only picks them up from Walnut Creek one-by-one, after they’ve been
checked or prepped or built into bikes. That will take a while, dependent
on the number of frames and staffing constraints.
It might also be that the Unicorn sails up the CA coast to dock at the Port
of Oakland and their container gets taken off there and goes the short
distance to Walnut Creek on the back of a tractor trailer truck.

You might consider this SOMA rack. May be bigger than you want, but way
cheaper.

Good price at about $115 with shipping.
Or, the same but not stainless. $20 less. --

Either give more attachment points (5) than the Nitto (3).

Note, haven't looked but I'd guess it will cost about $25 to USPS this with

[RBW] Re: Crash Inspection Advice

2021-02-01 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Each wheel should go into a truing stand to check for distortions and the
spokes checked for even tension. Either or both wheels may have undergone
twisting and impact forces. Have a bike shop do this along with checking
dropout alignment front and rear (which they'll probably do when
straightening the derailleur hanger).

Re: [RBW] Leah Peterson Takes A Stand

2021-01-19 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
The Park is a good value and solid. I have an Ultimate from many years ago
-- Resembles the Feedback Sports and folds smaller and is lighter than the
Park. But it does cost more. The Feedback tool tray is a significant
accessory to add to the package.
Being able to change height and rotate your bike while it is in the stand
is a big advantage over the hooks suspended from ceiling joist method where
the bike is always swinging away from you as you try to work on it.

[RBW] Re: How do you ship yer Riv?

2020-12-18 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
There is also https://www.shipbikes.com. You can call and talk to them with
your questions on box and bike size:
Contact info: PH: 1-708-383-2433. inform at shipbikes.com

They do sell a ready-made XL bike container. It is advertised as suitable
for tandems, large mountain bikes and e-Bikes.:
 https://www.shipbikes.com/xl-bikebox/
*The XL Bikebox.com meets all ground and air shipping requirements for UPS
and FedEx (which is 72 x 14 x 32 inches or 164 dimensional inches).
Recommended total shipping weight is 100 pounds. Made in USA. Guaranteed
for one year on shell, lifetime on metal mounts.*
They'll sell you a new "skin" when your box gets too battered to reuse.
You can also make your own. With the increasing popularity of e-Bikes I was
able to find a few of those when regular boxes had disappeared this past
summer. They are big and tough, too. Designed for heavier loads, they'll
last more trips.
This all assumes ground shipping with shipbikes or bikeflights. The
airlines will likely be prohibitively expensive, albeit faster.

[RBW] Re: Can anybody ID this saddle bag support rack?

2020-12-17 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
It’s a Nitto uplift, though I don’t know the number. Uses the same seat
post clamp as the R10.
I used it with a Carradice Barley bag on the GAP and C trails, Pittsburgh
to DC. Got mine at one of the Riv yard sales a dozen years ago.
Interestingly, it had the same HB tape wrappings to keep the bag straps
centered.
Recommend that you Loctite the single M8 bolt — There is a lot of stress on
it! Mine loosened up with all the jouncing and stripped the threads. Once
back home I got an M10 bolt and tap and retapped the aluminum clamp.
Also recommend that you run a strap from the saddle rails to the top of the
hoop as extra insurance.

Paul — There’s an itty, bitty graphic image of a ruler that links to the

others are pre-shrunk fabric?
I ordered a Small Railroad short sleeve. Ships from Texas.

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar bags

It's the F15 bag support.

https://www.benscycle.com/nitto-f15-handlebar-bag-supporter-bag-part-nitto--870-131-11/p

I have this and the Rivendell handlebar bag -- “Sackville BarSack” — that
was designed for it. Pretty easy to slide on and off. Great magnetic
closure for the top. Sadly, no longer made.

Ryan Hankinson said he had a grey one on June 9th of this year when there
was discussion of it on this list. "WTB: Rivendell handlebard rando bag"

I think the Gilles Berthoud #192 bag will use the F15 rack, but was
designed for the Klickfix mount and “fork.” You can see the sleeves and
fork here:

https://berthoudcycles.fr/en/922-handlebar-bag-gb192-gray.html

The Swift Industries Paloma uses the Klickfix fork and mount, too. It is
customizable and made in the USA. Not sure if they are making and shipping
anything right now.

Outershell Adventures in SF makes a high value, versatile, not too
expensive ($90 or $100) handlebar bag. It uses straps and elastic cords.
Wide array of colors, too.

https://outershelladventure.com/shop/handlebar-bag

They are producing — I just bought a smallish rack/basket bag from them
that can be made smaller and carried as a shoulder bag. They’re good at
answering emails and I got fast service.

Ruthworks in SF makes two Brevet bags that attach with straps and elastic
to the bars and the stem. I have one that Eli at Ruthworks customized with
two D ring loops so that I can carry it with a shoulder strap. Can be
ordered in different colors, too.

https://www.ruthworkssf.com/ultralight-brevet.html

https://www.ruthworkssf.com/store/p198/Micah.html

The Acorn X-Pac Handlebar Bag is only $79 but you need to order it Nov. 2
or wait a while for the next batch. Only in black. Beautifully made bags.

Today, Thursday, temps in Berkeley continued to be in the 60s. Sky not so
yellow/orange but dim and murky.
Bad part is that the Air Quality Index started out "Unhealthy"
(particulates -- PM2.5 -- at 150 to 195) in the early AM and by 5:00 this
evening had climbed into the "Very Unhealthy" range for PM2.5 of 215 to
235. Took the dog for a short walk. Very few people about. Fairly quickly
felt that it was hard to walk but no coughing like yesterday AM (after we
had opened the windows Tuesday night for cool air).
Ash has continued to fall, as if snowing very lightly at times.

Looks like only the Small are left, now.
I have a new Medium that I bought from a list member a few months back and
didn’t wear (Nor did he). It’s too long for my 5’8” skinny frame.

If anyone wants it, I’ll ship USPS for $105.00.
Or, SF Bay Area pickup for $90.00.

Email: David dot Lipsky at Me dot com
Let me know if you need measurements (though there were some on the RBW

Look at Will’s July 22nd RBW status email. I think he shows one that is

Sounds like, from today’s email, that they will be in both 25.4 and 31.8.
I’m excited about them, too. The many Rivendell upward and back swept bars

I get a little longer measurement, in my very cramped basement workshop, so
bike may not have been quite level. Actually its not likely as the front
tire is a 650 x 60 (2.35") G-One and the rear is a 650 x 70 (2.80")!
I get: 64.7 cm

[RBW] Re: Susie 53 - 56 Sizing Help Please!

2020-09-09 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch

Paul,

Still finishing up my 53 Susie but it’s done enough to give you some
measurements of head tube versus seat tube heights:

The head tube itself is 23 cm long but I don’t have a Clem L for
comparison. (It is 7 cm longer than the head tube of my 51 Appaloosa.)

Measuring from the top of the headset’s locknut to the ground is 95 cm.

I’ve installed a 10 cm Nitto DirtDrop stem and, at close to max extension,
that puts the bar center at about 110 cm from the ground.

Measuring from the top of the seat cluster lug (ignoring the pointy bit) to
the ground is 81 cm.

With the saddle at 73 cm extension from the bottom bracket center, saddle
center is 99 cm to the floor.

I'm 5' 8 ½" and my PBH is about 83 cm.

[Measurements are approximate….]

I’ll take it outside and take a picture tomorrow.

although Grant is considering having a new name and new decals for it.
The forks came without v-brake studs (I'm not calling them canti-posts
anymore), so forgive the mis-matched brakes. This 55cm frame rides like a
dream... it feels bigger in a good way compared to the old 55cm, which I
attribute to the 700c wheels, slightly slacker headtube angle and longer
top tube. I think it's mostly the wheels. The v-brakes are the big change,
but there's other small things that most people might not notice. We'll
have more details later."

[RBW] Susie Has a Question - Bottom Bracket Spindle Length

2020-08-19 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
A question about bottom brackets for the Susie Longbolts:

I got a Tange LN-3922 73 x 127 bottom bracket cartridge for my Susie. I
wasn’t thoroughly reading the comments that mentioned this BB was
recommended ... for a Rivendell Silver crank. However, I’m using an older
SR XD2 “wide x low” 40 — 26 crankset (with chain guard). The 127 turns out
to be way too wide for a good chain line with the SR.

A 122mm BB (American Classic Sealed w/adjustable chainline) that I tried
still puts the crank arms about 15mm (L) to 17mm (R) away from the chain
stays.
The 26 tooth inner has about 10mm clearance to the right chain stay. Tread
or “Q” factor is about 179mm.
I’m thinking I need the Tange 118 cartridge or the 115.5.
https://www.benscycle.com/tange-ln-3922-bottom-bracket/bottom_bracket_tange-seiki_ln-3922_447/product

Anyone have experience with using the XD2 crankset on the new Susie (or
Gus)? My frame is a medium (53).
What bottom bracket did you use?

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2020-08-18 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
They look like V-brakes to me. You can see the noodle in the front cable
line. And, a side pull doesn't easily work in the rear because of the cable
routing to the brake arm with the housing stop. That Saddlesack would get
in the way.
I don't recognize the brakes -- TRP?
Same ornate seat cluster lug as on the Susie/Wolbis. I like it and the
fluted end caps on the seat stays.-

[RBW] Re: (Large) Sackville Saddlebag without a Rack?

2020-07-13 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
If you'd settle for the previous generation large SaddleSack, in Olive (!),
I have a barely used one. I don't commute anymore and have a grocery store
in sight of my house. If I go to Trader Joe's, I use a medium Saddle Sack
(thanks to Joe!) and pannier(s) if need be.
Let me know if you are interested! (And, note that you get two more pockets
AND a detachable pouch than with the current model.)

You probably don't want to combine a Sackville of either generation or
size, with the Carradice supports. The deeper Expedition model, like the
Sport, has an upturned end and it doesn't play well with the flat bottom of
the Sackvilles. The Carradice bags don't have flat bottoms.

The Erlen shape would be better but it would be forced to carry all the
weight and movement of your load because it is not dropped low enough to
put weight on the saddle loops of such a tall bag.

The Nitto bag supports do look less "racklike" when the struts are
connected to the seat stays of your bike
How about a Nitto R-10?
https://www.benscycle.com/nitto-r10-rear-rack/rear_mount_rack_nitto__870-801-11/product

PS. I also have a never used Carradice Expedition QR if anyone has an
interest I sold the Carradice Super C bag I bought it for and as above,
the Sackvilles won't sit nicely on it.

I bought one of those lumps too. (Don't think the cup survived.) I keep
some in the basement shop and some in the garage shop.
If I'm building a wheel, I'll first drag the threaded ends across the wax
to ease building and maybe give some thread locking, but more in hopes of
keeping moisture from being forced into the junction of spoke and nipple
threads as the wheel spins.
It's very good stuff for putting on any threaded fastener or hook that goes
into wood. Much easier, even with a battery-powered, handheld drill.

So, embarrassing and exciting! Should be able to pick it up on Tuesday.

Like the Gus and Susie it allows them to get the headset way up high and,
consequently, the stem and bars can be high. Perhaps the drops are not the
main intention. So many of their favorite bars are uprights, meant to come
up and back toward the rider.

[RBW] Re: Susie Tire suggestions?

2020-05-15 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
So, wouldn't a not-so-knobby 2.8" tire work with a double crankset?
How do you figure out the chain to tire clearance, and bottom bracket, on a
not yet available frame?
I've got a medium Susie frame coming. The demo medium at RBWHQ had a Silver
double (w/chain guard) and Bontrager knobbies.
And, I bought a pair of 650 x 2.8" Schwalbe, G-One LiteSpeed tires.
Wheel bits not yet purchased but probably will use Cliffhanger rims.

[RBW] Re: Joe's Custom

2020-05-14 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Joe,
If you set this up to have two shifters and you keep the rear shifter on
the left, cross the housings in front of the head tube and keep the wires
on their respective sides of the down tube. They won't interfere with the
paint or the 3rd water bottle bosses and the routing will keep the housings
away from the head tube. It's an ideal situation for that configuration!
(If they don't fight the brake cables, interfere with a bag, etc.)
I use Steve's rubber sleeves, too, on head tubes. They have a slit for
installation and can go on anywhere without disconnecting cables. (JagWire?)
Also, get some helicopter tape for places where there may be some
occasional rubbing and as a chain slap guard.

I'd actually find a "bucket" hat unique and useful. Those disappeared quite
quickly.

Not exactly a baseball hat but Randi Jo Fab makes a line of waxed cotton
caps. They look nice, but they are not cheap.

Their linen caps are cheaper.
And, very MUSA!
