I've ridden thousands of miles of Midwest gravel on my Toyo Atlantis; 200 
of them were racing the Dirty Kanza. I switched to a Salsa Fargo for 
serious gravel riding because of comfort, disc brakes, and tire clearance. 
I can barely squeeze 700x50 on the rear of the Atlantis and the brakes and 
kickstand bracket collect a lot of mud when things get nasty. If I were to 
choose a Riv for all road/gravel, it would be the Appaloosa.

I have Velocity Quill on my Toyo Atlantis with 700x50 Soma Cazadero tires; 
the rims are awesome, but the tire/frame clearance it tight. I chose the 
Quill over the A23 because they were tubeless compatible and their wider 
inside width.  Our Salsa Powderkeg tandem has a Cliffhanger with dynamo on 
the front, and I will replace the Stan's rim on the back with a Cliffhanger 
as soon as I decide which hub I want to use. I'm leaning towards Hadley.

I'm not a weight weenie, but I can't imagine a better place to increase 
bicycle performance (besides the human motor) than wheels/tires.

I will be anxious to hear how the Riddlers compare to the Cazaderos. I have 
a new set of tubless 45 Riddlers in my tire stash, but I was able to 
squeeze the 50 Cazaderos on my Toyo Atlantis and I absolutely love them.

I test rode the 55 Appaloosa that Rivendell had in the shop last Summer. 
I'm 5'10 with an 89 pbh. It fit, but I probably would have preferred a 58. 
I think that a 55 would fit you very well.

Obenauf's was developed by a wildland firefighter that walked through wet 
ashes all day in expensive leather boots; it soaks into the leather 
protecting it from the harsh conditions. The Montana Pitch Blend didn't 
soak in as well and left the leather tacky and darkened it more than the 
Obenauf's did. I don't ride leather saddles on my bicycles, but I do use 
the Obenauf's on my hunting boots and horse tack. Many of the high-end boot 
manufactures put their label on Obenauf's LP; I used to buy the overruns 
from Obenauf's at a reduced price.

Probably because Obenauf's is better.

Before I discovered Obenauf's LP, I used a similar product, Montana Pitch 
Blend, but I've had better luck with Obenauf's.

The Velo Orange Grand Cru Touring Hub is still available in the 10-speed 
version for $120 on their website. I ordered a set of Velocity Quills with 
a raw unpolished or anodized finish because I wanted silver rims, but I 
didn't want them polished. My front hub is a NOS White Industries that I 
found on bikerecyclery.com.  The wheels turned out great, but the 700x50 
Soma Cazaderos barely fit on the rear of my Atlantis.

It was whatever Rivendell installed when they built it; probably a 
Pletscher. It gets pretty windy here in Iowa, and I've learned to lay my 
bikes on the ground instead of using kickstands or leaning them against 
objects. Our Powderkeg sounds like scaffolding falling over when a big gust 
of wind catches it.

I haven't had a chance to ride the San Marcos since paring it down to 24.5# 
because our bike paths have been under water for the past month. I'm 
picking up a custom Guitar Ted-built wheelset of Velocity Quills for my 
Atlantis on Monday that should knock off considerable weight when I set it 
up tubeless next Spring.

I tore the bike down to the frame for a thorough cleaning and a Frame Saver 
treatment. I removed the kickstand because I was tired of the bike falling 
over all of the time. I then swapped the Sugino triple and Microshift FD 
for an IRD Lobo 46/30 with a Shimano CX-70 FD, and replaced the Noodle with 
a 46 cm Soba bar that was on my Atlantis. It now weighs 24.5 lbs. without 
the pump and seat bag.

My PBH is 89 cm, and I ride a 59 San Marcos with plenty of seatpost. 
According to the geometry chart, there is only .1" between the two sizes. 
The 59 has 2 top tubes where the 57 will only have 1, if that matters to 
you. The 57 is designed for 650b, and 59 is 700c.

In 2011 I couldn’t afford a Hilsen, so I had Rivendell build a San Marcos for 
me. It was a typical Riv build with Nitto, bar-ends, Rich-built wheels, and 3x9 
drivetrain. It is pretty, comfortable, and it loves to climb hills and fly down 
the other side. I’m in the process of replacing the drivetrain to a 2x9 (46,30 
x 11-34) if Merry Sales ever sends me the IRD Lobo crankset that I ordered last 
April. The Rodeo would be another dream bike, but I’m happy with the Soma.

I had them on all of my bikes until I discovered the Brooks C-17 Carved. 
They are okay for the first 100 miles, but they get wet from sweat and 
stretch too much for the 2nd hundred. My next saddle will probably be one 
the new Cambium All Weather C-17.

Thanks for posting the spreadsheet; that looks like a lot of work. Have you 
looked at the Soma Highway 1 Bar? It doesn't flare, but it does have a 
short reach and drop. I replaced the original Nitto bars on my old Santana 
Noventa with Hwy 1 because of their short reach, 26mm clamp, and silver 
finish.

I agree, Brett. I ran the 700x50 Cazadero tubeless on the Ti Fargo that I 
built last year until I switched to the 2.25 Maxxis Ikon when I had a Blunt 
SS wheelset built a few months ago. I want to have a silver tubeless 
wheelset built for my Atlantis so I can swap the 700x42 Cazaderos for the 
50s.

Maybe next year?

I wish Velocity would offer their Quill and Cliffhanger in a silver 
anodized option; the polished silver costs more than I'm willing to spend. 
They make a wheelset for Rivendell with silver Cliffhangers, but I would 
rather have a custom wheelset with better hubs. I'm also waiting for the 
700x50 Gravelking SK that I heard rumors about last year...

Beautiful bikes, Hugh. I was in Walnut Creek a few weeks ago and rode their 
55 Appaloosa demo with the new Billie bar. With a PBH of 89 cm, it puts me 
right on the bubble between the 55 and 58 Appaloosa. While the 55 did fit, 
the cockpit seemed short, and I would have preferred the shorter seatpost 
and stem height of the 58. I already have an Atlantis, so I am going to 
resist the Appaloosa for now, but I thought it would make a handsome 
fat-tired singlespeed for my stable.

Was it a 130 or 135 spacing? I emailed Velocity last year and they told me 
that they do not make silver 135 hubs. My Atlantis deserves a better 
wheelset, but I think Rivs look better in silver than black.

I am riding 46 cm Salsa Cowchippers on my new Ti Fargo. I do most of my 
riding in the drops, so I set the bars where I want them and stick the 
shifters in the ends. The flare out just like the bars, and I always know 
where they are.

[RBW] Rivendell at Dirty Kanza

I saw my first Appaloosa last weekend. I crashed my Fargo at mile 75, so I 
was standing at the finish line checking out bikes and congratulating 
friends as they finished the 207 mile race. As a group of riders passed 
through, I noticed the unusual fork crown on a very dirty lugged steel 
bike; I didn't recognize the bike and it was too dirty to read the decal on 
the head tube. At first I thought it was a custom built frame, but the lugs 
screamed Rivendell. This was the only Riv that I saw, but there are usually 
a few that ride some of the shorter DK routes.

My Fargo frame is twisted and bent, so I am going to start building my new 
Ti Fargo sooner than I had anticipated. I'm just glad that I wasn't riding 
the Atlantis when I crashed.

[RBW] 2017 RAGBRAI

We may ride the Powderkeg from Clear Lake to Cresco, but we haven't committed 
yet. We rode the Santana in 2014 and I lost the desire to ever ride RAGBRAI 
again because of the heavy/slow bike traffic. Clear Lake is an awesome party 
town and the route is too close to home to not take advantage of.

I have no experience with the Motolites. I needed a v-brake that would work 
with drop bar brake levers. If I didn't have a stoker on the back, I think

I agree with Ray. I replaced the vintage STI/Erickson Gizmo and XT 
v-brakes/travel agents on my 20y/o Santana with Gevenalle Audax shifters 
and Paul MiniMotos. The drum brake was controlled by the captain with a 
Shimano friction bar end shifter. I have disc brakes on my Fargo, Pugsley, 
and Powderkeg, and I don't think they stop any better than the MiniMotos.

The Rivit Pearl looks intriguing, but I have had too many issues with 
leather saddles stretching after 100+ sweaty miles. I have been replacing 
my Selle Anatomica Titantico X with Cambium C17 Carved, but it gets 
expensive. My Cambium shows no sign of the cracking/splitting that I have 
seen on the internet, and the cover material is holding up very well.

Wednesday night I was riding with the local club road ride and I sat up and 
let go of the bars at about 19 mph, and the bars wobbled like crazy. Today 
I was riding gravel at about 15 mph, and there wasn't a hint of shimmy when 
I sat up and let go of the bars. I ride lower tire pressure on gravel than 
pavement, so I think I will watch it closer if the new parts don't cure the 
problem. I ordered an IRD RollerDrive headset from Soma and it will replace 
the current headset as soon as my Fargo is back on the road.

This bike has descended hills on SE Minnesota and NE Iowa gravel roads at 
over 40 mph with no problems, but I haven't had a chance to try those hills 
since the spacer was put in last Winter. It is the low speed without hands 
wobble that Bill describes that is bothering me. Since the needle bearing 
headset appears to be more of a band aide than a cure, I am going to hold 
off throwing parts at the bike until I try changing tire pressures or even 
swap out the Cazaderos for  a set of Schwalbe Dureme that I have laying

This is a 61 cm Atlantis. The tire pressure looks like a good place to 
start experimenting. I have been running the Cazadero at about 30-35 psi on 
the front because of our chunky gravel roads. The seatbag and contents 
probably weigh less than a pound, but I may try to see how a handlebar bag

[RBW] Toyo Atlantis Shimmy ???

better. I bought it barely used a few years ago and have put a few thousand 
miles (mostly gravel) on it. The headset would never stay tight no matter 
how hard I dared wrench on the locknut. I took it to a LBS and they removed 
the headset and machined the frame so that the headset would fit better. I 
rode it for a year, and I still had problems with it loosening. I then took 
it to another LBS and they installed a spacer (seems like the headset might 
have bottomed out on the threads???). I now have a tight headset, but 
I also have a shimmy when I let go of the handlebars. I used to be able 
to ride this bike without hands at any speed, but now it wobbles, even at 
10 mph. I don't have any load on the bike except a small seatbag for 
tubes/tools, and the tires are the same Soma Cazadero from last year.

Any suggestions on what might be causing the shimmy or how to fix it? Shall 
I replace it with a NeedleBlasteur from the Riv site and see what happens?

The headset on my Toyo-built Atlantis would never stay tight, so the LBS 
machined the headtube when they tore it down to reapply Frame Saver. It 
still didn't stay tight, so another LBS added a spacer because the headset 
apparently ran out of threads on the fork. If I were to replace the 
headset, I would go with the needle bearing Tange.

I replaced the vintage Ultegra brifters with the Audax shifters on our 
tandem a few years ago. I wasn't able to use bar-end shifters because we 
already had a lever for the drum brake in the end of the bar. The shifters 
work perfect in friction mode on the 3x8 derailleurs.

The shifters are in front of the brake levers, so you don't even know they 
are there until you reach for them to shift.

rig that I have been dreaming about. I have changed a few things and put

Would the NFE make a better 100+ mile gravel grinder than my Atlantis?  At 
170 lbs, I really don't need such a stout bike, and I would probably be in 
better shape at the end of the day on something lighter and sportier. The 
geometry is different, but it looks like I would be able to get the 
handlebars level with my 79 cm seat height on a stock x-large.

I am currently riding a 61 cm Atlantis.

The 40x700 Schwalbe Duremes are pretty good for fair weather DK, but they 
were less than ideal for the soft muddy spots, so I ordered a set of Soma 
Cazaderos last night for the Oden's Revenge at the end of the month.  My 
traveling partner, Guitar Ted, built a set of 650b+ wheels for his Fargo, 
and he was pretty happy with the way his bike performed.

My Paul's Touring Canti brakes caught a lot of mud and grass while walking 
through the muddy section, but I saw disc braked and fat bikes having just 
as much trouble as I did.  The fat bikes were picking up mud by the pound 
and dumping it on the drive train; I can't imaging how many rear 
derailleurs were ruined in the first 15 miles.

I wish I had seen this before I left town Thursday morning.  I rode my 
Atlantis on the Half-Pint again this year; though much slower than last 
year. The 3 miles of walking and 40 miles of headwind on the soggy roads 
really took it's toll on me.  Looking forward to riding again next year, 
but I might not be riding the Riv.

I don't have much experience with the Sam, but my San Marcos is a much 
nicer ride than my LHT.  You may want to try different tires before you buy 
another frame.

BTW, your LHT brakes won't fit on the San Marcos or the newer Sams.

I think you guys are trying too hard.  My Aeropress has never made a bad 
cup of coffee.  My technique for 15 oz of americano:

fill the tea pot with water from the Brita pitcher.
invert the Aeropress with the plunger set on 4
dump 2 heaping scoops of dark roast beans in the grinder set on 'fine' 
grind the beans and dump them in the press
when the tea pot whistles, fill the press within 1/2 inch of the top and 
stir for a few seconds
let it sit for a while
attach the filter (I use a stainless filter)
flip it over and place it on top of your cup
slowly press all of the coffee and air into your cup
add the remaining water from the tea pot until the cup is full

I signed up for the Half Pint again.  I have no desire to pedal a bicycle 
more than 111 miles on those roads no matter how nice the weather is.  I 
rode my Atlantis on Schwalbe Duremes 700x40 with 40 psi F, and 45 psi R.  I 
am going to experiment with lower pressures before I ride this year, 
because the vibration on my hands wore me out.  I rode my San Marcos on 
part of the Almonzo course two years ago on Jack Brown Blues and it was not 
as comfortable or fast as the Atlantis.

I have a 46 Noodle on my San Marcos, 46 Highway One on my Santana, 46 Soba 
on my Atlantis, and 46 Salsa Cowbell on my LHT.  I like them all, and I 
don't know if I would be able to pick a favorite.  They all have 
Tektro/Cane Creek/Retro Shift brake levers which is were I ride most of the 
time.  I keep my bars level with the saddle, so I am comfortable in the 
drops on all of these bicycles.

Last Summer I put together a beautiful LHT that I haven't ridden since I 
bought my Atlantis.   The only experience I have with the Sam is a quick 
ride around the block in Walnut Creek a few years ago; I wish I had taken 
it for a longer ride.  The double top tube does not bother me, but I prefer 
cantilever or v-brakes over the caliper brakes offered on the new Sams.

Jim has a good point regarding the threadless vs threaded fork, because 
there are so many more handle bar options available.  I am still trying to 
figure out how to adjust the headset preload on my Atlantis.

I also have an 89cm PBH @ 6' tall.  I ride a 61 Atlantis, 59 San Marcos, 60 
LHT, and 60 Santana Noventa.  They all fit well, but the Atlantis is my 
favorite.  I bought it last Summer off of this list, like new and 
completely built (w/o wheels or saddle) as I would have for myself for 
$2000.

I had my eyes dilated for an eye exam this morning before I weighed the 
bikes.  The Atlantis and Santana weights are correct, but the Sam Marcos is 
26.5 pounds.  I thought 21.5 was too good to be true.  Sorry for the bum

I upgraded the shifters and brakes on my '96 Santana from Ultegra 600 STI 
shifters with Erickson Gizmo and XT V-brakes with travel agent to Retro 
Shift Audax and Paul's Mini Moto.  It was a huge improvement in both 
shifting (friction) and braking.  I installed Shimano M-324 SPD pedals so 
my wife could clip in and avoid loosing her pedals as we learned how to 
work together.  She is a masher and I prefer to spin, so I do a lot of 
shifting to help her pedal in circles instead of squares.  If we are still 
speaking to each other after RAGBRAI, we are going to have to decide 
whether we want to refurb the Santana or spec out a new one.

The Mini Motos will work with standard drop bar levers.  If my bike had 
canti brakes, I probably would have been satisfied with just the Kool Stop 
pads, but I wanted to eliminate the travel agents and I always wanted to 
try out the Mini Motos. 

 I was trying to talk my wife into moustache bars and a Brooks Flyer, but 
she seems to be satisfied with the original Nitto bars and my old Selle 
Anatomica.  I bought her a Thudbuster ST to take the bite out of the bumps, 
but her legs are too short.

Chad,
I can't believe I rode by without noticing your bike!!!  I must have had 
the tunnel vision going with the road being so crowded early in the race. 
 How did the Sam perform on the rough roads with your tire choice and 
mustache bars?  I was amazed at how stable the Atlantis was in the rough 
stuff and how fast and far I was able to coast down the hills.  The 
vibrations from the stiff tires with too much air pressure really wore on 
me towards the end of the race; I might wrap a layer of cork tape on the 
handlebars to see if it absorbs some of the vibrations.  Fortunately the 
roads smoothed out for the last 20-30 miles.  I am sorry to hear about your 
mechanical problems; you will have to give it a try again next year.

This photo was taken at the top of a very steep climb.  The gravel looks 
pretty tame in the pic, but the slope I had just climbed was covered with 
huge slabs of rock that I had to go over instead of picking a line through. 
 Ride with GPS list 3800' of elevation for the Half Pint, but my Garmin 
only measured a little over 3400'.  I was able to ride the whole course in 
the middle ring with a 11-34 cassette.  I used the small ring several times 
on the Almonzo because there was many more long and steep hills with my 
Garmin measuring over 5400' in 102 miles.

I rode the Duremes because they were already on the bike and I had heard 
horror stories of the razor-like flint cutting tires to shreds; I saw 
scores of cyclists changing flats.  Before the race, I had thought about 
buying a Rawland Stag and using some of the parts off of the Trucker to 
make a dedicated gravel grinder, but I think I will upgrade the wheelset on 
the Atlantis and try some of the new gravel tires that are hitting the 
market.  The Clement MSO was by far the most popular tire and I will 
seriously consider these when I get the new wheels.  I took this picture of 
my bike after I got back to the dorm room at ESU...

Chris,
I would guestimate 25% of the bikes had MTB bars.  Most of the bicycles 
were 'cross bikes and Salsa Vaya, Fargo, or Warbird.  There were several 
x-country type MTB, some hybrids, a few fat bikes, off-road tandems, and 
regular road bikes.

Jim M.,
A lot of the serious gravel racers that I know run tubeless.  They tell me 
that they can run lower tire pressures and not have to worry about pinching 
the tube when they hit something harsh.

My Atlantis was not the only Rivendell in the Almonzo 100, but I am pretty 
sure that there was not another Riv in the Dirty Kanza 200 or Half Pint. 
 The bike performed flawlessly except for my sloppy friction shifting.   
About a year ago, I drove up to Spring Valley, MN and rode with Jim Thill 
and a bunch of country bike cyclist on the Almonzo 100 course.  After that 
experience, I decided that gravel was a lot safer and more scenic than 
riding on pavement.  I built a Surly LHT into a gravel grinder and started 
riding with Guitar Ted on Saturday mornings for a 3-hour gravel ride.  I 
found the Atlantis on this forum and realized that it was a much nicer ride 
than the Trucker; the Surly has been hanging in the garage since.

I wasn't out to win, just finish.  I haven't heard where I placed in the 
Almonzo, but I finished the DK Half Pint in the top 1/4 of the starters and 
the top 1/3 of the finishers.  I carried too much stuff, and should have 
run lower air pressure in the tires.  I was afraid of pinch flats on the 
cattle grates, but I was able to wheelie or hop the bike over most of them. 
 After the race, one of the more experienced riders suggested 35# in the 
front and 40# in the back; I was running 45# in both of the Schwalbe Dureme 
700cX40.  I am looking forward to trying the Half Pint (111 miles) again 
next year, but I doubt if I will ever do the 200.  After 8 hours of gravel, 
wind, hills, heat, and sun, I am ready to get off of the bike.

My 61cm Toyo Atlantis will ghost shift, but I always assumed that it was my 
sloppy shifting or the rough terrain that I was riding over.  I did tighten 
up the Shimano bar-end shifters just in case that was the problem, but it 
will still ghost shift now and then.  I just correct it and keep on 
pedaling...
FWIW:  9-speed and Shimano XT RD with 1000 miles

If cavemen were dying at the age of 20, what were they dying of and who was 
rearing their children?

I am 10 lbs heavier than when I put the bicycles away last Fall, but my 
health is good and I'm still seeing ribs, abs, and veins when I look in the 
mirror.  I cut sugar, grain, phoney fat, and processed food out of my diet 
almost two years ago and so far it has been working for me.  Dairy is my 
friend and I consume it like a Holstein calf.  I eat a lot of eggs and wild 
game as well as meat from the grocery store; pink salmon and tuna come in 
foil packets and are easy to carry on the bike.  I also eat a variety of 
vegetables and a big salad everyday.

My wife is a medical lab technician and she gripes about my cholesterol 
numbers (200), but my HDL is high and my triglycerides are very low.  My 
BP is around 110/ and my resting pulse averages around 50.  I am still able 
to fight fire, hunt and pedal with guys 20-30 years younger than me, so I 
am going to stick with this lifestyle until I see a reason to change.  The 
biggest benefit to cutting the grain and artificial sweeteners out of my 
diet are the lack of bloating and flatulence.

I am going to ride my Atlantis in the Almonzo 100 this weekend; 100 miles 
of self-supported gravel in SE Minnesota.  Nutrition on such a long ride is 
going to be tricky, especially with all of the hills.  I am going to carry 
salmon, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and string cheese on the bike and I hope to 
find a bottle or two of V8 at a convenience store on the route.

My San Marcos seems lighter and climbs better than the Atlantis, but the 
Atlantis handles the rough stuff better and the big tires are more 
comfortable and stable.  I am not going to weigh either bike...

I wish my stoker would lose 25 lbs, but I sure as hell ain't going to tell 
her so.  The Santana is heavy, and I have no plans for trying to make it 
lighter.  I guess I am just going to have to pedal harder...
