[RBW] Re: Velocity Rims, Again

2013-11-04 Thread Bill Lucas
Micheal,
I have built both the Synergy and the A23 in 700C. The Synergy can only
handle 100 Kgf spoke tension without puckering at the spoke holes. The A23
is my new fav because it can be tensioned to 130 Kgf and it is still
available in off center drilling. The weight also drops. It was much
easier to mount my Grand Bois Cyprès 700C x 32
mmhttp://www.compasscycle.com/tires_gb_700_32.html
.

I ride the Synergy rim with Pari-Moto tires. It is true that they mount
pretty loosely and it is hard to get them perfectly centered but I have
gotten them good enough and have no problem with the ride or security.
However, I just noticed, in the last issue of BQ, that Velocity is now
offering, through Boulder cycles, a new rim, the A23, which they describe
as shallower, stronger, and shinier (!). Has anyone on the list tried
 these rims?

[RBW] Re: Tuning up indexing, a little OT

2013-07-14 Thread Bill Lucas
Michael,

I just fixed the shifting issues with my BMC Monster Cross, which is a 3 x
9. The chain was cut for another bike and was 2 links ( 1 pair) too short
per the instructions from Shimano. The shifting worked, but you had to
fuss with the smaller cassette cogs. It was better on the road than the
stand. I installed a new chain of the same model (KMC 9.99) with 2 more
links and shifting is dialed in. The change is very noticeable. So check
the chain length per the instructions for your model of derailleur.

Bill Lucas

On Saturday, July 13, 2013 11:23:33 AM UTC-7, Michael Hechmer wrote:

I stopped using indexed shifting about ten years ago, and reverted to

version. Now I have a tandem with shimano BE's, which was set up by a bike
shop. Perhaps one of you who works with this stuff regularly can offer some
 guidance.

The rear shifting worked quite well but it took me 2 1/2 years to get the
front end shifting predictably (for those of you who have never ridden a
tandem, front end shifting is a very different animal). While fixing the
front end, which now works perfectly, I replaced the much too big Deore XT
RD with an Ultegra 6700 GS, and can't seem to get it to work quite right.
The limit screws are good, as is the B screw, and the cable tension feels
quite high. The indexed shifter lifts the chain fine from the outside all
the way up to the inside (28) cog; but when I start down it will hang up
between the 1 2 position, then jump two cogs on the next click; it then
hangs between 7 6, and jumps 2 cogs to 5. After that it is OK, except
for that indexing hesitation which I hate. The chain (wipperman 908) has
just a few hundred miles on it and the cassette (11-28 HG) is new.

Right now, I have reverted to friction which seems to be working fine, but
would like to get the dang index to behave!

Could it being so long have contributed to my difficulty adjusting it?

2011-05-08 Thread Bill Lucas
BC,

The IRD Aplina is not a copy of the Ultegra.

I used it to replace a 9-speed Ultegra on a 48-34-24 set up. The
Ultegra was VERY fussy to get working. I literally bolted the IRD in
place, adjusted the stops and it works perfectly. All that said, I
tried one on my wife's new Ebisu All-Purpose and it didn't work well.
I played with it for a while. I ended up changing it to a Shimano
FD-4403 Tiagra. The Tiagra was modified to match the chainring
radius. These are indexed bicycles.

You need to get a front derailleur that matches the chainring radius.
Sometimes it takes a swap ot two too get it right.

[RBW] Re: Non Brooks Saddle recommendations please.

2010-11-22 Thread Bill Lucas
I have just spent a bit of time on WTB Pure V. It was very
comfortable and cheap. The problem with it is that waist” is wide.
The saddle always felt big between my legs. I looked at other WTB
saddles and the wide mid section seems to be part of the design.
Still, it is worth a try. If a Brooks didn’t feel wide, then I don’t
thing that it will be an issue.
I ended up on a Selle San Marco Rolls.

 Hey there,

I've been riding w/ Brooks saddle for several years and I've come to
worry that I'm putting too much pressure on my softer parts.  I've try
adjustments but I'd love to know if anyone has a recommendation for a
simple saddle w/ a slot to protect me that might be great and look
 good w/ my Atlantis.

 Thanks so much!
