My experience with leather saddles is so different than this discussion.
For years I was using Brooks B-17 Ti models and every one developed a hump

mentioned. I have used Odenaufs ( recommend bt Mr. Heine) and after a
fairly long break-in, they have remained very comfortable.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet purchase

Assuming no dents, no rust, just a few scratches ( dropouts, chain stay )
and components are in working order, $ 1000-1200. I have seen them go for
less, but those purchases were a steal.

[RBW] Re: Goatheads and goatheads, what is rider to do?

2018-08-20 Thread Don Compton
Some of the tire brands are very sensitive to over inflation. And I ride
90% of the time on pavement, but many times on rough or broken pavement.
28s is the perfect size for my riding habits. I inflate my tires to 68r and
60f and some of the other brands will not hold these pressures. I was
riding my Compass 32c extralights with tubes at 55f and 50r.I could have
purchased Compass 35c, but one of my bike's clearance between the chain
stays would have been a little tight. My Roadeo would have been fine with
35s but my Rex needed to have the chainstays widened and I really didn't
feel the need for a tire wider than a 28.

2018-08-19 Thread Don Compton
Ok, as a Roadeo owner, maybe I am not today's typical Riv owner. But,
living in Northern CA and experiencing "goathead " season, I have finally
found a solution to the problem. I finally tried "Tubeless" tires. What a
revelation. I was using Compass 32 extralights and recently got 4 flats in
6 rides ( 3 goatheads and 1 radial tire wire ).Enough is enough. I bought a
pair of Hutchison Sector 700x28 tubeless from Rex Cycles in Sacramento and
the 28s ride better than the Compass 32 extralights and in 5 rides I
haven't had a flat. Also. the tires, while riding and handling better than
the Compass tires, the combo of tire and sealer is lighter than the tire
and tube combo.I really think think this is the future of bike tires.

Bottom line, I screwed up selling my 60cm Ram, and I will not make the same
mistake with my 59cm Roadeo. The Roadeo is a fairly expensive non-custom
frameset, but it's a great design and the build quality and paint is
impeccable. And the geo is perfect for someone that just plain enjoys
riding his or her bike.

Allright. Here's what I am going to try. I am going to have Steve Rex (
actually Doug, his AAA mechanic ) buy some Compass 700x35 extra lights and
have Doug install them on my Williams' tubeless-ready wheelset. Down the
road I will buy a compressor ( just a tank) so I can get the beads set. My
go-to bikes are a Roadeo and a Steve Rex and both are set up to handle
700x35 tires. Can't wait to try tubeless. And, thanks for all the advise.

2018-07-19 Thread Don Compton
I was looking for the Roadeo on the Riv site, and couldn't find it. I am
thinking of going to a Compass tubeless tire in a 700x35 size and was
wondering if it would fit my 59cm Roadeo.

The Roadeo is just slightly more responsive, and has room for bigger tires.
I had a 60cm Ram and have a 59cm Roadeo. The fit is very similar. Just
personal, my Roadeo is a very slight favorite.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking opinions on 11 speed roadie setup

2018-01-17 Thread Don Compton
Patrick,
I have Ultegra 11sp on my Roadeo. At 66yo I have little or no need for high
gears but still enjoy close gears on the flats and rolling hills. I have a
48-34 crankset with an Ultegra 14-28 cassette. That's a straight block
14-21 with 23,25 and 28 cogs added. It's like having an older triple. I
like to keep my rpms at 85 or higher and when riding with friends the close
gears help me find a comfortable gear which has always helped me maintain
decent speeds over the length of a ride.. And I always hated the shifting
and wide Q of a triple crankset.
And after 2 years the Ultegra 11sp has been flawless. All I have done is
clean the chain, cassette, an cables under the bottom bracket. Not bad for
a full group that was purchased for $600 shipped to my home.( shifters,
brakes, cable set, derailleurs, chains, and cassette)

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadinis could be arriving any day now?

2017-11-28 Thread Don Compton
Just looking at the Roadini frame from the side, it looks like it has the
longer chainstays of the Ram vs the Roadeo. The Ram had less room between
the chain stays ( width) than a Roadeo or many of their current models. I
bet that the Roadini is a great road bike that can handle today's fat but
lightweight tires.

road a lot (6-7000 miles a year). We had to rebuild her Campy shifters

In my experience, a well built and well designed bike is a great

[RBW] Roadeo ???

2016-11-17 Thread Don Compton
I really enjoy Rivendells. I am a roadie , club rider, once in awhile a
dirt road. Is Rivendell getting away from the Rambouillet, Roadeo type of
bike?

[RBW] Re: What's the longest you have ridden on your Rivendell period?

2016-11-10 Thread Don Compton
I am not a long distance rider, but I rode the Wine Country Century twice
on my old Ram, and 4 times on my old Roadeo that I sold to someone on this
forum. At 65, I am enjoying my new Roadeo, but shorter distances and less
hills. I have ridden lots of centuries over the years and wish I had
discovered Rivendell much earlier.
For me, Rivs are the best bikes from both a handling viewpoint and
comfort.I think the stable handling takes pressure off the rider's core.

Re: Noodles uncomfortable? Was: [RBW] Re: Nitto M151F bar story behind it on all those riv builds lately?

2016-10-27 Thread Don Compton
I rode noodles for years using Campy Ergo Shifters. On my latest Roadeo, I
installed a Shimano 6800 group ( with Shimano std reach brakes). The
brifters are longer and I needed a shorter reach bar. If I had used a
shorter stem, the tops of the bars of the Noodles would have been useless.
So, I went with Soma Highway One bars.
On any bike with Campy shifters the Noodles would be perfect for me.

[RBW] Berthoud Saddles

2016-10-16 Thread Don Compton
I've been a Rivendell fan for years having owned 4 different bikes. I used
B-17 saddles for years, but with wear, as the area under my sit bones would
settle, the hump in the saddle( running for-aft) would cause extreme
discomfort. I just had to give up on Brooks. I have been using a Secialized
Phenom for about a year, but it's not so great on longer rides like I
remember my Brooks in the early years of ownership. Has anyone with issues
similar to mine switched over to a Berthoud saddle and felt some
improvement?

Re: [RBW] Re: Which bikes should Rivendell keep selling?

2016-09-15 Thread Don Compton
Patrick,
I live in N. Calif. and stay away from riding in the rain. I never use
fenders on my Roadeo. So, in that context, my Roadeo has room for some
fairly large tires, atleast 38c without fenders. It has more room than my
old Rambouillet.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I have another new Grand Bois 28 Cerf,so it
will be awhile until I need to purchase new tires. When I finally wear them
out I am going to buy some Compass 700x32 extra lights. Some complain about
the price of Grand Bois and Compass tires, but I get my money's worth
because of their long wear compared to typical expensive race tires.

[RBW] Re: How Rivendells are received in your city ... (was: Rivvish Shop in Santa Barbara?)

2016-09-10 Thread Don Compton
I bought my first Riv ( a blue Ram) around 2005. I am a club rider and
after years of trying to ride bikes set up for racing and suffering severe
back pain all those years, a fellow rider had just bought a Romulus bike.
In a situation where I would try anything, I thought maybe I should take a
look at Rivendell. Well. long story short. I drove to Walnut Creek, talked
with G.P. for almost an hour and bought a Ram frameset that day and built
it up that night and rode it the next day. My riding buddies were a little
skeptical at first, but after seeing my improvement in riding the
compliments started coming.
With my newest Riv, a bright red Roadeo, I never get anything but
compliments.
The latest trend to high quality, largers has renewed conversations about
about my bike and Rivendell in general.

[RBW] New chainring for my Roadeo

2016-08-13 Thread Don Compton
May not be a big deal to a lot of you, but most 11sp systems have an
unusable high gear for me. I hate a 50t big ring. I have Ultegra 6800 on
my Roadeo, but use a Campy 12-29 cassette. TA finally makes a 48t chainring
for the 6800 crank. I get my old 4 -1 ( 52x13) high gear and all the ones
in the middle that I love. Thank you TA. 48-34 with a 12-29 11sp cassette
is perfect ( a triple without the wide tread and shifting issues )
