Re: [RBW] Rivendell Roadbike Curious

As if you need it, I’ll give a plus one for a Ram or Romulus. I have had my
orange Ram for over 15 yrs and it has been on many club rides, centuries,
short rides, gentle gravel rides, and nowhere rides. It is probably the
best designed “everything but real dirt” roadish bike Grant’s ever
designed, at least for me! And don’t be afraid of drop bars!

Agreed. I own a 54cm Ram and it's equipped with fenders. The max tire
that works in this set up is a 32mm. But without fenders one might be
 able
to get 35mm or more on the wheels, but I still don't recommend it for a
"road bike". While wider tires may be a good thing for general riding
purposes they would not work out as well as smaller diameter tires for
 road
riding and for what she'll probably soon be using it for like or not, club
rides where she will be burning up the pavement with it.

[RBW] FS: 58cm silver double top tube Appaloosa

2024-02-12 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've decided to free up some garage space so my wonderful Appaloosa is up
for sale. It's a silver 58cm, double top tube earlier model, but not sure
about the year it was made (maybe two iterations ago?). As you can see from
the pics, it is in very excellent condition with just some slight
discoloration on the head tube from cable rub.

I'd be open to selling the whole bike (minus Brooks seat, bag, and front
rack) for $1950, or the F/F/HS/BB for $1100 obo. Also anywhere in between
priced accordingly.

Component list:
Deore LX front/rear derailleurs/175mm crank arms and rings
Silver shifters
XTR m900 cantis
Tektro brake levers
Noodle 46cm bars
Generic seat post from Riv
Wheels - Mavic Open Pro rims/Deore LX hubs, 36 DB spokes/Schwalbe Marathon
Supreme 40s (not the RH's pictured)

I'm in Asheville, NC and local pickup would be easiest, but willing to ship
if buyer pays for packing/shipping. PayPal preferred.

Lots of pics here: https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0xGFqhgJG7q01p

[RBW] Asheville Riv Rendesvous Recap

2023-07-13 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Just a quick recap from our fantastic Riv weekend in Asheville.

It was a blast. Almost 25 riders from Indiana to FL, including 10 local
folks. Everyone was great and the bikes were, as you can imagine, almost
all rivs, but we did let in a bridgestone :). A Hunq, 5 Appaloosas, a
couple of Atlanti, 3 or 4 gorgeous customs, the famous Betty Foy ridden
72.000 miles by Pam (yes 72K!), a purple Rosco Platypus, a pumpkin
platypus, a couple of Sams, and two Salukis, a Gus, and probably some more
that I'm forgetting.

Some highlights:
The River Arts District greenway ride followed by beer and dinner at New
Belgium Brewing, where our bikes took up and spilled over the entire bike
rack system.

Our Bent Creek Gravel rides - three groups had a splendid day with not too
hot temps, no rain, and perfect fire roads.

Two friendly bears who realized they were in the poster and better make an
appearance.

Our bike parts garage sale, where everyone realized that we were all trying
to get rid of lots of tires, stems, handlebars, bags, etc. that everyone
else there already had. We all have a bike parts hoarding problem.

Beer and dinner at The Wedge brewery Saturday night.

The fabulous poster from Brian.

All of the fun people that came together with amazing bikes, great
personalities, and brought all of their fun to the weekend.

Enthusiastic agreement that we should do it all again, maybe in during a
fall or spring timeframe.

And thanks to a very gracious offer from Leah, she put our pics and videos
together into one of her great videos - THANK YOU, LEAH! A link to her
video is below if you'd like to watch it.

And for those of you that weren’t there, the posters are gorgeous. And
accurate - Some bears actually joined some of us during the weekend :)

If anyone else is interested in a poster (see details in my last post) pls
let me know asap so I can give Brian a heads up on how many to print.

Great write up Steve! You did a fantastic job describing the really nice
riding there and the pictures prove it :). If anyone else gets inspired to
join us on July 7-9 please let me know via PM and I’ll add you to our list.
Right now we are at about 20-ish participants, some coming from as far as
Florida, Georgia, Indiana, and New Jersey. Looking forward to it!

Hi from Asheville!

I just wanted to send a quick update about our Riv gathering July 7-9. You
can see our planned activities below.

Right now we’ve got 20 folks that have indicated that they are planning to
attend, and 6 that are maybe’s. Here’s the “yes” list I’ve got:

*Yes (traveling to Asheville):*

Brian plus 2 - Lexington, KY
Jason - Indiana
Laing - FL
Pam - Charlotte, NC
Frank - Richmond, VA
Ken - VA
Drew plus 1 - Atlanta, GA
Eric - Indianapolis, IN

*From Asheville:*

Joel and Heather
Theresa and Gary
Ellen
Carl
Nic
Steve
Robert

Please let me know if I’ve missed anyone - and also let me know if you’d
like to attend but haven’t yet responded.

Some folks have arranged campground reservations (right at Bent Creek where
our Saturday morning ride will be) here:
https://adventurepisgah.com/lake-powhatan. There are also tons of hotel
and VRBO options in Asheville but the summer gets very busy so book early.

And a big thanks to the “Planning Committee” members - Carl, Nic, Joel,
Robert, Steve, and Ellen! They are working on route details (map and GPS),
food and drink venues, a pavilion for the swap meet, and possibly (fingers
crossed) some ride swag (hat and/or a bandana).

It should be a really fun weekend and we are looking forward to meeting
everyone, riding, and geeking out on all things Riv!

Gary

*Schedule for July 7-9:*

*July 7* - Afternoon ride on Greenway (mostly paved with maybe a short
gravel section - very easy) followed by dinner/beer at one of the local
places (All Souls, New Belgium, White Duck Taco, Smokey Park, etc) all near
the Greenway with outdoor seating.

*July 8* - Morning ride at Bent Creek Forest near the NC Arboretum with two
options (all nontechnical gravel fire roads - an easier, shorter one and a
longer one that ideally could be done in a figure 8 so everyone stays
together for the first, easier part. Parking either at the Arboretum or by
the river (for those that don’t want to pay for Arboretum parking)

Afternoon short ride in conjunction with a swap meet, possibly
at Carrier Park near the Greenway (paved) under one of their pavilions (or
another similar location near the greenway). Other ideas are welcomed!

Dinner somewhere local (same possible options as for Friday)

*July 9* - Morning ride near downtown (all paved very quiet neighborhood
roads) around Montford, Sunset, etc. with optional lunch afterwards

*Please let me know *if you’d like to continue to get info about this, and
if you’re planning to attend. That will help us with planning and food
options...

Hi Laing,
Bent Creek fire roads are gravel, but not too rough. Greenway is almost all
paved except for a short gravel portion that we may or may not do.
Neighborhood ride is all paved. Your custom with 650b x 48 would be perfect
(and I'd like to see it!).

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Ride in Asheville NC?

2023-05-17 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Everyone,

We had a fun meeting yesterday with our local Riv riders and sketched out a
few more details about the upcoming Rivendell (unofficial) Meet up this
July. Here's what we've got so far:

*Schedule for July 7-9:*

*July 7* - Afternoon ride on Greenway followed by dinner/beer at one of the
local places (All Souls, New Belgium, White Duck Taco, Smokey Park, etc).

*July 8* - Morning ride at Bent Creek with two options - an easier, shorter
one and a longer one that ideally could be done in a figure 8 so everyone
stays together for the first, easier part. Parking either at the Arboretum
or by the river (for those that don’t want to pay for Arboretum parking)

Afternoon short ride in conjunction with a swap meet, possibly
at Carrier Park under one of their pavilions (or another similar location
near the greenway).

Dinner somewhere local (same possible options as for Friday)

*July 9* - Morning ride around Montford, Sunset, etc. with optional lunch
afterwards

*Please let me know *if you’d like to continue to get info about this, and
if you’re planning to attend. That will help us with planning and food
options! You can PM me with any interest or questions!

Hi Pam,
Yes, July 7-9 is the weekend we are aiming for. Some of the asheville folks
will be getting together next week to nail down some more details which
we’ll post here. We’d talked about an easy gravel ride, a harder gravel
option, a greenway ride, a quiet neighborhood ride, and lots of
opportunities for craft beer stops and socializing. You’d also mentioned a
possible “swap meet” and I think that is a great idea. Keep your eyes
peeled here for more details to come sometime next week!

Hi Pam! So glad you’re interested and hope you can make it. We will
certainly have lots of options ride-wise but haven’t nailed anything down
yet. Certainly lots of road and greenway options. Some of the gravel fire
roads are pretty mellow too. And we’ll definitely have time built in pre

opportunity. Maybe we could even let folks post what they are thinking
about bringing to make it more interesting.

will see from the attached photos, it was very rarely ridden. It is in
near perfect condition; the only blemishes are small scratches on the
left-side chain stay (see photo). There are several upgrades to this
 bike:
fenders, dynamo and lights, saddle, seat post, stem, handlebars, rack,
etc. It's a very wonderful bike. Photos attached (more upon request).
Here are the specs (more details on request):

- Seat Tube/Frame Size: 55 cm

   sure)
   - Crankset — Sugino w/ 40 & 26 chainrings. Pants protector in

   - Shifter — Shimano Deore XT trigger Shifter

- Fenders — Velo Orange Snakeskin
- Rear Rack — Nitto Big Back Rack — Medium 32R

Hi Laing,
We've not solidified ANY details yet, but I'd guess about 50/50 road/gravel
fire roads. There are also lots of single track options that we could map
out if anyone is interested in that. We will probably also map out shorter
and longer options for each day.

were thrown out to see if more folks would be able to join.

We've had five folks fill out the doodle scheduling poll (thanks Steve,
Jason, Ky, and Chasen) to try to find a late spring date for a potential
Asheville gathering and the May 12, 13, 14 weekend is best for those who
responded. Does that date work with others who didn't respond? Or should I
throw out some summer and/or early fall dates?

Hi Everyone, at the risk of being presumptuous I went ahead and created
this Doodle scheduling poll to see what (if any) weekend dates in May/June
would work best for a Riv group meetup in Asheville. Just click on the
link and it will guide you to a calendar that will allow you to select the
dates you are (and are not) available for a weekend meetup. After about a
week, I can post the results and we can either take the planning further
from there or else pick different dates and try again. Here is the link to

another ride the following day on quiet roads (they do exist!) just north
of downtown, up Sunset to Town Mt, around Montford, etc. that could follow
the Asheville bike routes.

Steve, I agree that July 4 wknd would not be the best time for a gathering
as Asheville gets mobbed then. But if we can find a suitable date I’d be
happy to help with some organizing of the gathering. Seems like the biggest
hurdle is getting a date nailed down. Any summer date would probably work
for me, but I’d suggest late May/early June if we wanted to avoid July 4.
Not quite as many tourists here then.

The Wilson Creek area is beautiful - but is pretty remote and about 1.5 hrs
from Asheville. Closer to Asheville there are some great fire roads and
mellow singe track at Bent Creek Experimental Forest that is connected to
the NC Arboretum. I ride there all the time and it is just about perfect
for a riv. It's also only about 15 min from downtown Asheville. There's
also a growing urban bike trail that includes roads, bike paths, and
breweries lacing through town that is a fun way to get to know the town
(and the beer). And, a new bike store named "Gravelo" just opened in town
and although they don't sell rivs, they are very familiar with them and
always ooh and aah appropriately when me and my other riv pals go in there.
They are really a great group! That's my. $.02!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-18 Thread Gary Johnson
I'm kind of with Doug on this: as much fun as it would be to build up a new
Riv frame, I'm not sure what the point is because I have a Clem L I'm in
love with now. Plus, I'm currently running north of 250 lbs (body weight,
not tire pressure), and I'm wondering if the new batch of Platy's is
designed as skookum as the Clem, which does not noodle in the least under
the load I impose. Thoughts?

I've got a 2015 grey/kidney bean 58 hunq that I bought new and I'm sure
that one was built in Taiwan. I remember cause I was talking to Grant when

bikes. It's still a great bike - wherever it came from!

Re: [RBW] Re: Adapters to make SPD pedals into clip and strap pedals?

2021-06-03 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Patrick,
Here's another option but they don't take
straps.
https://www.adventurecycling.org/cyclosource-store/equipment/sp/problem-solvers-decksters-clipless-pedal--adaptor/

They are kind of heavy but work fine for occasional riding around. I've got
two pairs and would be happy to sell you a pair for not too much if you're
interested.

I gotta do that ride too. Mike, I lived in Cocoa Beach back then and my dad
ran the Starlite Motel where the Mercury astronauts stayed. He got to be

[RBW] Re: Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-06 Thread Gary Jacobson
Can't praise the RH double in 42/26 enough.

I have tried many FD's and like the IRD Sub C. with the 42 tooth large
chainring doubles I've used.

The other crank I like due to it being a no compromise low Q crank is the
86bcd Sugino Apex.
28 teeth is the smallest inner chainring for that spider when used as a
double. I believe I posted about the ball and cup BB works for this set up
on a 130 OLD frame.

I have used XCD cranks as a triple, but these days I'm riding doubles on
all road bikes.

[RBW] Re: Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-06 Thread Gary Jacobson
The HHH is 135 OLD. Does it make sense to use a low Q RH double with such a
frame if one likes lower Q? Gotta think about that.

Recently I was thinking of trying a 86 BCD Apex on my Atlantis and nixed
the idea. Maybe my thinking is faulty.

[RBW] Green Rambouillet, 56cm, new lower price

2020-10-05 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi all,

I am posting this for a friend who has been unable to ride for a number of
years and his Ram has been sitting unused in his garage. It is "almost" in
almost pristine condition with very few miles. There are just a couple of
scratches on the top tube from a garage tip over. I've got some touch up
paint for those. Everything is in fantastic condition and the bike is
awesome. I've got an original orange Ram and I love these bikes...

He is now asking $1300.

[RBW] Re: FS - 56cm green Rambouillet, close to pristine condition, $1450

2020-10-01 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
I wanted to bump this up and let everyone know that I've not been able to
locate a nearby buyer so the Rambouillet is now "shippable." I'd be happy
to work with anyone connect with a shop to arrange packing and shipping.
So let me know if you need any more info or have any questions. Thanks!

I have a 1 Up and it is great. They also just came up with an attachment

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar vs Appaloosa ride quality?

2020-07-22 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Jeremy,

I've got a 58 Hunq and my wife has the 55 Appaloosa. I started this thread
to see if anyone has experience with a larger Appaloosa because I was so
surprised when I rode her App for about an hour how much livelier and
supple it felt compared to my Hunq (one of the first generation grey/maroon
ones). I thought maybe because it was a smaller frame? But others that
have responded seem to have felt the same thing. My Hunq is noticeably
heavier and just FEELS heavier riding it compared to my wife's Appaloosa. I
don't know about the tubes, but it sure seems that the Appaloosa either has
lighter tubes or the longer chain stays contribute to the significantly
different feel. A clydesdale vs a gazelle difference almost. Not good vs
bad, just different.

2020-07-21 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi again,

Just to clarify, I realized that my initial post was a little confusing.
I'm not ready to let go of my Hunq until I try out an Appaloosa. So I'm
mainly interested in buying an Appaloosa frame at this point.

Jan,I know you understood that and thanks for your interest in the Hunq. PM
me with your contact info and I'll save it if I do decide to sell the
Hunqapillar.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar vs Appaloosa ride quality?

2020-07-20 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch

Ryan, thanks for the Hunq brochure - I'd not see that before. And I do LOVE
the head badge! I agree that the App feels a bit lighter and more roadish,
while the Hunq feels just rock solid. I'm not sure what MUP riding is :)
but I'm definitely not doing loaded touring on trails any time soon. And
yes, another bike is always the answer!

Chris, the Hunq feels much more stout to me than the App.

Andrew, my PBH is 91 and I'm pretty sure a 62 Hunq would be too tall, even
tho I've got my seat set with lots of post showing. I didn't realize that
the 62 App had more clearance. I'm using Albastache bars with a dirt drop
stem on the Hunq and the reach is great. How do you think that would that
work on your App? I'd be interested to see a pic of your bike so I can see
where your seat is set. What is your PBH?

Thanks again everyone,
Gary

[RBW] WTB Albastache bars

2020-07-19 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi everyone,

I just finished building up an Appaloosa for my wife (with Choco bars) and
now after riding my bike with Albastache bars she is wanting to switch to
those. Riv is out of stock so I'm seeing if anyone here has an extra
Albastache bar they'd like to re-home.

Thanks!

[RBW] Hunqapillar vs Appaloosa ride quality?

2020-07-19 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for opinions about the ride of a 58 Hunq vs a 58 Appaloosa. I
know that is pretty specific, but here's why. I just finished building up a
55 Appaloosa for my wife and we were on a ride this weekend where we traded
bikes. Both of us remarked that the Appa felt much more lively, smoother,
and lighter than the Hunq. Seeing how her bike has the awesome 55mm Compass
EL tires, I traded wheels to see if that would account for the difference,
but it really didn't make much difference.

So before I start thinking about replacing my beloved grey/kidney bean
Hunq with an Appaloosa I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone else out
in Riv land has had experience with both, ideally in my 58 size. Am I just
imagining the difference??

Thanks for any input you have!

[RBW] Re: WTB English Rain coat

2020-04-25 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric,
I just received my DV Greenspot a couple of months ago and it is heavier
than my previous rain jacket. I'd probably not use it in warm weather but
it is great for anything cool/cold. It is bulkier too so it's not the kind
of thing I'd just throw in my bag if it is not supposed to rain. FWIW, I
ordered a medium and am 6'/150#. It fits great with lots of room for
layering, but I did have the sleeves made longer than the stock size and
they are perfect. The construction and quality overall is impeccable.

Hi All,

With some close-to-home time on the horizon I want to redo the cockpit on
my tandem. I have a 42 Noodle bar that would be too narrow, so I'm looking
for a 46 or a 48. If anyone is interested in trading, please let me know!

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: 59cm Clem barely fits in car, thus will be caried on the outside. I like the 1UP rack, but what about others...?

2019-11-01 Thread 'Gary L' via RBW Owners Bunch
+++1 for the 1 UP. I've had one for about a year and it's the best rack
I've ever had. Rock solid with zero sway, and it only touches the wheels
and can be configured for 1 - 4 bikes, with an add-on carrier for each one.
That way the pieces can be added separately and individually don't weigh
much (maybe 20# each). Kind of pricy but well worth it!

[RBW] WTB - a 55 Appaloosa frame or bike

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-01-01 Thread 'Gary' via RBW Owners Bunch
I really appreciate and respect everything about Riv and Grant's ability to
push the boundaries of "normal" bikes and parts, and have introduced many
folks to them who are glad to now be part of the "club." So I'm happy to
buy a few gift certificates when Grant throws out a request - I'd much
rather hear from him early rather than have him/riv hold things close and
not give folks a chance to help before it might be too late (which I hope
never happens!). A company like Riv is so rare theses days - integrity,
supreme customer service, innovative not-made-in-china products that are
hard if not impossible to find anywhere else, and a just plain fun vibe.
I'm with John B, I'd be happy to pay the old membership fee from long ago
again just to have access to their thinking!

2018-11-03 Thread 'Gary' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks for all the responses. And thanks to a number of very nice offers,
I've been able to find a great 51 App frame that will work really well. To
chime in on the sizing issue, my friend is not a fan of close top tubes and
since she is in the upper PBH range for the App I think it will be perfect
for her. I agree with Joe's comment that the smaller frame's shorter top
tube would be beneficial as well. I think that a 55 Sam might have worked
too, but no Sam's materialized.

[RBW] WTB - 51 Appaloosa or 51 Hillborne - or possibly 55 Cheviot

2018-11-01 Thread 'Gary' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi all,

I've got a friend that is looking to get her first Riv and I'm trying to
give her a hand. Anyone have a 51 Appaloosa or 51 Hillborne that's looking
for a good home? A frame/fork/headset, partial, or full builds could all
work. Another option would be a 55 Cheviot but that would be a little lower
on her list. A 56 Atlantis (old version) would also work but that is
probably wishful thinking

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Great Divide Thoughts

2017-01-08 Thread Gary
I agree with Patrick about the albastache bars. I had both albatross and
noodles on my hunq and found the albatross too upright for good climbing, and
the noodles were difficult to get a good hand position when descending anything
steep / technical. Then put on the albastaches and they are the perfect
compromise - upright enough, easy to keep your hands on the brakes for
descents, and easy to climb with. Here are a couple of pics from the North
Carolina mountains...

2016-08-13 Thread Gary
I've got a 60cm Ram that fits P45 fenders and 32 Paellas pretty easily.

[RBW] WTT - B17 Champion Special for Cambium C17

2016-02-03 Thread Gary
Greetings all,

I have a B17 - honey colored with copper rails - that's in excellent
condition that I'm looking to trade for a Cambium C17 in similar condition
(any color but "natural"). If anyone's interested, please let me know! Pics
available if interested.

Thanks,
Gary

[RBW] Re: Richard Sachs

2015-11-03 Thread Gary
I was lucky to get on Richard's list back in 2001 when his wait time was
only about 9 months and the frame price was much lower than today. I met
him at his shop in CT, where he spent a couple of hours showing me around
his museum-like workshop, taking measurements, and talking about how he
liked to work. He was just a fascinating guy. During the build, he would
send me hand drawn postcards of the progress every month or so. The frame
came right around nine months after our visit, and it was - and still is -
an incredible piece of craftsmanship and an absolutely amazing ride.
