[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2018-12-19 Thread Hoffsta
I tried an early Cambium C17 but experienced it eating all my shorts very
quickly and it seemed the fabric textured top was responsible. I saw one in
a shop the other day and it looked smoother. Are there different textures
available or did it get updated at some point? I found the saddle
comfortable and would consider putting one back on my rain bike if the
texture is improved.

[RBW] Re: Cambium vs. Flyer question

2015-03-31 Thread Hoffsta
I've been riding a B-17 for about ten years and have a Gyes Flyer
knock-off. I recently tried a Cambium C15 for a few days. It has nice shock
absorbing qualities but I didn't care for the texture at all. As mentioned
above, I felt much more chafing action as it grabbed onto my shorts. I also
found it much more difficult to reposition myself as I've grown accustomed
to just sliding along smooth leather, the C15 required me to stand up and
sit back down. I much prefer a smooth leather saddle. In the end, I
returned the Cambium demo and purchased a Selle Anatomica and it is my new
favorite saddle ever.

[RBW] Re: Hetres vs. Pari-Moto, your thoughts?

2013-11-20 Thread Hoffsta
I have both Pari Motos and Hetres and have ridden a good amount of miles on
each. As far as speed goes, I can't feel too much difference between the to
two- both are very fast. The difference between either of these tires to a
stepped down like Col de la Vie is much more noticeable than the difference
between them. I can attest to the fragility of the Pari Moto as I've had a
couple of slashes from road debris while I've had none on the Hetre. As for
comfort, the Hetre is better. Bumps are better neutralized and cornering is
slightly more confident. If I had to pick one to ride with for the rest of
my days, it would be the Hetre. Fast and comfortable. I will likely try
Hetre EL, tubeless next time.

Since you just bought Motos, I recommend wearing them out and then trying
some Hetres when they need replacing.

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: Shimano bar-end shifters Albatross bars for commuting

2013-03-28 Thread Hoffsta
Hi Erl, I will just add that I too commute on a Surly LHT. Before
committing to the Albatross bars you may want to take a closer look at the
mustache bars. You will get the same hand position as the Alba bar out on
the ends, but you also get many other useful (and aggressive) hand
positions all the way up to the stem as well. I heartily endorse this setup
with the Shimano bar ends for city commuting! Yes you can fly through the
gears, up and down just as quickly as grip shifters, and no they wont
break. Mine have been rocking trouble free for over five years of near
daily use with many bike spills. They have a few scratches on the plastic
end caps but never a malfunction. Going with cloth bar wrap (shellacked)
gives a natural transition from bar to shifter so you can even comfortably
rest your palms on the ends for the most upright position. If you're a
v-brake guy like I am, Tektro makes a linear pull road lever that works
perfectly on the mustache as well.

I have a second bike with the Albatross bar and it's OK. I like it fine for
cruising down to the corner store for a six-pack but it's not as
comfortable as the mustache for distances similar to your commute.

Cheers to new bars!

[RBW] Re: Handlebar

2013-03-28 Thread Hoffsta
I have the Nitto B135 Rando bar. I believe it's 42mm at the ends of the
flared drops and only about 36 or 37mm at the hoods. At first, I very much
disliked it, probably just because I'm used to riding way wider mustache
bars on my daily commuter. Although the shape was comfy, I just couldn't
generate any power when sprinting. However, as the months have gone by and
as my muscles have adapted, I've really grown to appreciate this bar. This
is on a standard 80's racing style bike, so mid to high trail, I'd guess.
I'd keep riding it but it has a terrible creak from the sleeve so I'm
considering replacing it with the Grand Bois as it's similarly shaped in
theory but most people regard it as even more comfortable.

In regards to the question of a wider Rando bar, look at the Velo Orange
one, it comes in much wider sizes.

Re: [RBW] Chain failure question

Last time this happened to me, (brand new SRAM 971 with less than 20

been fine on that bike after a few hundred easy miles. If your chain only

wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts or experience. My only concern
with repairing it of course is if one link could fail maybe so could
another. I'd guess the chain has at most a couple of thousand miles on it
and I've been pretty good about keeping it lubed.

  So, fix or trash?

  Thanks in advance,
  Tim

Both of your bikes are beautiful but I really like the Hunqa!

[RBW] Re: Nitto Randoneur bars. Have tyou used them?

2012-08-27 Thread Hoffsta
I have a 42cm Nitto B135 that I picked up at a garage sale. I don't like it
at all but that doesn't have to do with the design as much as the size. The
42cm spec is at the widest point of the flared drops. This means that the
flats are extremely narrow and not at all suitable to me. I'd like to try
other Rando bars but I need them much wider.

Was wondering how they feel different from regular drops.

Looks like the drops are very wide, and the hoods are slanted compared to
 a regular drop bar.

 1. What is the reason for all the massive contours?
 2. Do you like yours?
 3. How do you size them for yourself - from the hooks, c-c, or the ends,
 c-c?

[RBW] Re: Another huge platform pedal. Love the platforms

2012-08-22 Thread Hoffsta
I don't know the specs on these new pedals but I'd guess the Grip King are
better if you like to lean and pedal through your turns. I used to run BMX
style platforms that look similar in size to these VOs but I would always
pedal strike. Switching to the narrower Grip Kings allows me to corner much
more aggressively and my feet feel very comfortable and supported.

Also, on my recently refurbished 1985 Stumpjumper, I'm LOVING the Shimano
DX pedals. They did it right, way back then!
