[RBW] Bicycle Belle Ding Ding

2017-10-31 Thread LeahFoy
Hi All,

I read the list all the time but haven't said much as of late - but I mean to!
I recently got back from Ireland and I even took photos of interesting bikes as
seen on the streets there - while my husband rolled his eyes in the background
- because I knew you'd care (my ONLY biking friends are on this list).

I've been out here, riding the wheels off TBBITW (The Best Bike in the World,
if you don't know) and loving it. School is in full swing and we remain the
only members of the Bicycle Bus. I've somehow managed to add a VIOLIN to the
already obnoxious load on TBBITW, and still make it up Death Hill. I put my
pride aside last month and got my older son a rack and Wald from Rivendell so
he can at least carry his own laptop and jacket. Even just that much off my
bike makes a difference. More on that later.

I have several photos to share but I read somewhere that it is frowned upon to
put them directly onto the list email. With LTE and high speed internet, is
this still the rule? I could be obedient and use a Flickr link, but it won't be
nearly as fun without words. Someone on here knows the solution.
Thanks!
Leah

[RBW] Re: JuJu on that Bike

2017-10-30 Thread LeahFoy
Andy, I was waiting for you to chime in! Yes, JuJu is overtly appreciative of
where he is - and seemingly everything else around him. I looked at his Twitter
and everything is “lit.” His bike is “lit.” His style is “lit.” Love it.

Also love Al Villanueva, hero that he is. And of course he has a big truck, as
he well should.

You guys have a pretty good thing going out there in the Steel City. Cheers to
you and your city, Andy!

[RBW] JuJu on that Bike

2017-10-29 Thread LeahFoy
Maybe you all heard about Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu
Smith-Schuster's bicycle being stolen at practice. He is the youngest player in
the NFL at 20 years old, and he does not have a driver's license or a car. He
goes everywhere by bike, and he is quite attached to his Ghost bicycle from
REI. He rides around with his Steelers helmet acting as his bike helmet, made
even more wonderful by the chinstrap and GoPro attached to the top. I know
this isn't Rivendell, but I'll chance posting the two videos of the story
anyway because they are so uplifting and energizing. Plus, it's a win for
biking as life.

Short version: there was collective outrage and Steeler Nation mobilized to
search the city for JuJu's stolen bike. I hope the first video works because it
is only a Facebook link and I cannot find it elsewhere online. Enjoy!

If you are interested in more of the story, you can google and see the cool
cleats he got to send a message after his bike was recovered, and you can see
him as the Pittsburgh Penguins' guest as they play a song addressing his bike
recovery.

He did not. He was heavily intoxicated when I contacted him so I speculate he

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread LeahFoy
Ryan, this is AWFUL. I'm not surprised this happened to you in a school zone -
parents are distracted and rushed and just generally at their worst in school
zones. It's a battlefield out there. I think that's why you see so many
So-and-So-Memorial crossings by schools. Blood will run in the streets
eventually as long as we have cars swirling around school zones. A compressed
L1 vertebra is really something; so sorry this happened to you. Your thoughts
on a GoPro are my thoughts, too - I wish I'd had one! I don't even know how
they work or how to use one, but sure seems like it would have been useful
yesterday.

I found one of the kids who was there on that sidewalk after school. The kid
was really hesitant to give me any information (as he well should be) said he
didn't know his mom's cell phone number, has no phone of his own but was
willing to give up "my mom's house phone." Then he promptly told me he'd be
really hard to make contact with. Sigh. I am also 99% sure he has special needs
and am not sure how he will be at recalling and repeating events. I emailed the
number to the officer and while I was at it, asked if he was ever able to make
contact with the driver. Here is his emailed response: " Yes I was able to
track down the driver. I issued him multiple citations for the violations. I
spoke to him at length about your concerns and the safety of the public. He
will have a future court date. Thanks."

I feel happy that the driver has been tracked down and dressed down, but not
happy that he wasn't arrested and his license revoked, though I kept my
opinions to myself. I also wonder what his side of the story is, but I dare not
ask the officer any more questions as I feel I may be dangerously close to
nagging, ha!

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-12 Thread LeahFoy
Thanks, All. Yes, I really don't know what you have to do to get arrested
around here. Hit and run, nearly mowing down school kids *on the sidewalk with
your CAR*, having an extensive record of prior incidents, 4 eyewitness accounts
that put your car at the scene...

I called my Mom (mistake) who had a fit and demanded I stop my foolhardy ways
of biking to get places. "But MOM, I was standing on the sidewalk! Not even on
my bike!" IF YOU WERE IN A CAR YOU'D HAVE A BETTER CHANCE, she said. I cannot
win.

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-11 Thread LeahFoy
Thanks, Patrick! I have thought of the exact same tactic - becoming a car. I
just can't do it. I'm too afraid the cars will kill my kids. There is but one
way in and out of the canyon, and there is no bike lane and no shoulder of the
road, and everyone is traveling to work and school at that time. The cars move
at 50ish mph. We would have to somehow leave the sidewalk and budge in front of
cars moving at high rates of speed. And even if they didn't kill us they would
HATE us. We need one of those flyovers like we had in California - an elevated
sidewalk that bridges over the intersection! I think I'd get arrested for
impersonating an official at the intersection, but I'm half-tempted, ha
Should I get a sign and see what happens? *smirk*

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2017-05-11 Thread LeahFoy
The Bicycle Bus has been undergoing some infrastructure changes as of late, but
what happened today really takes the cake.

There is a major intersection before our school, and the City decided to put up
traffic lights and do away with the old 4 way stop. It is multiple lanes of
traffic, and one of the busiest places in the canyon. The City has done away
with OUR crosswalk, posting a "NO CROSSING" sign and has instead placed
crosswalks on the remaining three sides. We must cross all three to get to
school now, which is a great time-waster and has added considerable time onto
our commute. My two sons and I had successfully navigated two of the
crosswalks, and we were standing on the sidewalk with our bikes, waiting for
the 3rd and final WALK light. There were two other children waiting with us. I
was chatting with someone, when suddenly there was an SUV, coming from behind
me, heading for me and my 11 year old boy. The SUV drove up onto the sidewalk,
missing me and my son by less than 12 inches and CONTINUED TO DRIVE ON THE
SIDEWALK, taking out two orange cones, which became lodged under his chassis.
He showed no reaction -never even swerved - and continued to drive up the
hill. Two cars behind was a woman with her 3 kids. She had witnessed the whole
thing, and yelled that she was calling 911 and that she had his license plate.
She followed him up the hill. He pulled into the guard-gated ritzy community
and she lost sight of him. She was parked near the end of our commute, waiting
for police, so I sent my boys home (just a couple blocks away) and stayed to
talk to her. Turns out, the driver had been driving on the sidewalk at the
shopping center a mile away and managed to hit her car. He left the scene and
would not stop even though she tried to wave him down. He drove erratically up
the hill with her following him, and then she watched him nearly hit us on the
sidewalk, which made her decide to dial 911. A policeman met us, and told us
this is the 5th (FIFTH!!!) erratic driving report they have on this man. The
officer left to confront the guy at his home address, and said we may hear from
him. An hour later, my iPhone rang with a blocked number calling, and it was
the officer, who now wanted a written statement and to interview my two sons.
We gladly complied and asked what happened when he arrived at the residence.
The man refused to answer the door, and the two traffic cones were no longer
under the SUV. The vehicle had numerous dents and scrapes. The officer said all
the other calls ended the same - the man wouldn't answer the door when police
arrived. The officer said he is not the type to let this go, and that he will
confront the man again tomorrow. He said if he can establish that the man was
the driver, he will be arrested for damaging the other woman's car, fleeing the
scene of an accident, and endangerment of a child - a felony. He has left me
his email address and instructed me to find the kids that were with us and get
them in contact with him, which I will gladly do tomorrow.

I can barely believe this happened. I always think I'm safe on the sidewalk. I
never even saw that SUV until it nearly took out my left leg. I didn't even
have time to feel afraid. I didn't see how close it got to my son, but he says
it was closer to hitting him than me. I do know that I prayed for protection,
as is my custom, on the morning bike commute, and I am grateful that my prayer
was answered and that the Bicycle Bus lives to ride another day! Thank you,
Jesus!

Carla and Bill, I think the SapphireSacks look much different in real life than
they do on the Riv website. I am going to either sell or trade my tan medium
Saddlesack because I've never liked the color. I LOVE the gray Saddlesacks, but
now I'm rethinking the blue. I didn't like the looks of the blue Saddlesack on
the website, but the Shopsack is actually a better color and maybe I need the
blue Saddlesack after all. If it's not too much trouble, will you show us your
Sapphire Saddlesacks on your bikes?

[RBW] Re: The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

2017-04-24 Thread LeahFoy
Oh, Chris, we DO think alike. And we've got ourselves in trouble now. All these
bags in all these colors... So, I also use the Grabsack as a purse. It's a
great, lightweight bag for summer, but has muted enough looks that it actually
is great for any season. It holds my whole iPad, and like most Riv bags, has
more room than you think. I do wish the bag held its shape at the bottom, but
yours is the tan and those are made from tougher material which may hold its
shape. This bag would really shine if I was the type to carry more in my bag,
but I'm a minimalist. If you tend to schlep around more stuff, you'll love the
Grabsack!

Also, I came across these on Amazon, and just may adorn one of my Sackvilles
with them:
https://www.amazon.com/Nostalgic-Assorted-Hipster-Embroidered-Applique/dp/B01L0IBVBC/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8=1493065448=8-17=bicycle+iron+on+patch

Valerie, I agree! Medium is more my size. The large looks too big. I could also
see this bag being great for the beach (shaking out the sand would be easy), or
for tossing extra clothing in when traveling, or as airplane carryon, or a
library bag...the possibilities are endless. I bought my sister the gray
Shopsack for Christmas one year, but I don't think the previous colors were
pretty enough to be carried as handbags. I changed my mind when I saw the
Sapphire though. That bag looked downright pretty.

[RBW] The Siren Call of Sapphire Shopsacks

2017-04-24 Thread LeahFoy
No good can come of late-night noodling around www.rivbike.com. My husband is
fast asleep, and I, an incorrigible bag-lover, was admiring the reno Rivendell
did for their Saddlesack product page. I studied the new blue Saddlesacks,
wondering why everyone loves them. I don't like them - the blue looks wrong to
me. The gray looks RIGHT. I don't have gray, I have tan, but gray didn't exist
when I ordered tan. Even so, I stand by what I said: GRAY Saddlesacks.

Then, I came to the blue (really, let's say sapphire!) Shopsacks and hearts
started coming out of my eyes. Oh, what a pretty and useful bag that would
make, I mused. I never understood Shopsacks before. I have a Captain Hook net
that does it all. But this one was so lovely that I started reading old threads
about the usefulness of Shopsacks. Bolstered by the praise of the cult
following of Shopsackers and fueled by the fear that everyone else would take
all the sapphire Shopsacks, and that Rivendell will someday not make them, I
greedily plunked one in my cart. And then I ordered it.

Now, I ask you: how am I going to pull this off? I have tan Backabikes, a tan
medium Saddlesack, a gray Multisack, a gray Grabsack, and a sapphire Shopsack.
Also, I ask you: will a medium sapphire Shopsack fit inside a large Wald and if
I attach clips, will they reach to clasp onto the Wald? Lastly, do any of you
( especially women) use the Shopsacks as handbags? It's 11:44 pm and these are
the burning questions.

[RBW] The One in Which LeahFoy is Chased by Vicious Dog on TBBITW and Lives Another Day

2017-04-20 Thread LeahFoy
TBBITW and I have put on the miles today. I had loaded up my little American
Eskimo Dogg in his Wald basket (he drives a large Wald; he only drives
American) on TBBITW to take him to the vet for boarding. The plan was for him
to drive his Wald to the vet, drop him off and continue on to school on TBBITW
to retrieve my sons. I had gone no further than a few houses before I noticed a
neighbor and her off-leash miniature Schnauzer in their yard. "Milo" began to
have conniptions, barking and growling and straining, but his mistress had him
by his collar, so we exchanged hellos and I pedaled on. Not five seconds later
I heard the sound of canine nails scraping pavement at a rapid pace behind me.
There was Milo, full of fury and in hot pursuit of me, the Wald-driving Dogg
and TBBITW. Was it Wald envy? Backabike bag envy? Doggs-in-high-places envy? We
will never know because Milo's not saying.

At that moment I had to make a choice. Do I stop so his owner can grab him and
hope I won't have to pry my leg loose from his jaw? Do I trust my Dogg, who is
now standing up in his Wald not to jump out and retaliate? I looked down at my
bare legs. I was wearing my favorite yellow and white striped shorts ("My
little lemon drop! My sunflower!" exclaimed my husband this morning.) and
open-toe sandals. No. I'd like to keep my flesh, and my shorts look better
without bloodstains. I decided he could neither be THAT persistent, nor that
fast. I'd take off at a quick pace and he'd give up and go home in less than a
block.

I rounded the corner with Milo's mistress screaming behind me,
"MIIILLOO!!!" but my course was set and my tires were eating up the
road before me. I chanced a glance back and unbelievably, Milo was keeping
pace! In fact, he was but a few feet behind me! He was lunging for my left
Backabike bag! I sent up a silent prayer that I'd have it in me to go faster
for longer. I was now on the open road leaving the neighborhood, a quarter mile
into the chase. Milo was breathing harder but showed no signs of giving up. I
pedaled harder and managed to put 30 feet between us. It was at this point I
realized that the enraged and persistent Milo was at risk of becoming roadkill.
I wanted to veer onto a sidewalk to get him off the road, but was moving too
fast to do it safely - remember, my Dogg is still driving the Wald - not a
stable arrangement. I approached an intersection, and noticed a woman in a
large white SUV yielding to me at her stop sign. She could clearly see me, but
she would not likely see Milo 30 feet behind me until he was under her tires. I
had to communicate with her but how? I met her eyes, then turned my head and
upper body backwards, as if watching something behind me. It worked. She
noticed my pursuer and pulled up to me, slowing.

I slowed as she asked through her lowered window, "Is that your dog?"

"No!" I yelled, "He's trying to bite me!" Not eloquent, but I was WINDED. Milo
saw his chance and seized it with all four canines. He closed the distance and
was nearly upon me. I hit the pedals harder and begged my Dogg to sit down in
his Wald.

She sped off ahead of me, and I thought great, she's left me to deal with him
alone. We were now nearing the one mile mark of the chase and the roundabout
was looming. I would have to stop and yield to cars here. Milo would surely get
his chance at a Leg of Leah. Not even the Wald-driving Dogg and the TBBITW
would save me now.

Suddenly, a ways ahead of me, the white SUV swerved right and stopped. I passed
her and as I looked back, I saw her jump out and intercept Milo!!! He had a
collar and I knew he'd be returned home. I nearly laughed with relief as I
approached the roundabout and safely swirled downhill toward the vet's.

The doorbell rang this evening and there stood Milo's mistress. She had somehow
tracked down my address for the sake of profuse apologizing and requests to
make this right. I apologized, too. I knew his mistress couldn't catch us and
that Milo could have been lost to her forevermore. All's well and there wasn't
an ounce of anger between us and Milo is now going to be leashed 100% of the
time.

If you ever have a similar encounter, may you have a Wald-driving Dogg and a
TBBITW to usher you through it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-19 Thread LeahFoy
There are a lot of opinions on here already, so what's one more?

I have the medium Sackville Saddlesack in tan, though I wish it was gray. (The
gray came out just after I ordered my tan, and I have long lamented it. Gray is
my color. Trade ya, anyone?) I also have the tan Backabikes, and the gray
multipack - all wonderful.

I looked at all the links posted for the other bagmakers, and I don't see any
competition to the Sackvilles in either aesthetics or function. Everything was
thought of, and then made beautiful. There are features to the bag that I
haven't even discovered, so well thought up were the Sackvilles. I should NOT
be dropping more cash on more bags, but I am *this close* after Grant's
terrifying hint at the scarcity of the Sackvilles in future times. I should not
be admitting this to a group of shameless enablers like you! Next thing,
you'll be sending replies about how I need the large, and then suddenly I'll be
on the Riv site, swiping my credit card.

Re: [RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-04-10 Thread LeahFoy
Friends, let's veer away from anything negative about men. I happen to be a big
fan of men. If I told you about The Greatest Man (not counting Jesus), my late
father-in-law, you would weep at the stories of his kindness. And then there's
the two young men I happen to be raising, oh, their lucky future wives! There
are so many good things in the world because there are good men in it. Nope,
you'll get no man-bashing from me.

I feel perhaps I should lighten up this thread. A video clip of me trying to
mount those bikes on the rack ought to do it. There's me, trying to get
purchase on a sturdy part of the frame. Me, on tippy toes, trying to be taller
so I can lift the Clem higher onto the rack. Me, hoisting the unwieldy Clem
onto the wheel trays, and missing. There's the grating of metal on metal as I
try to figure out what is hung up on what. There's the scritching (if that's
not a word, it should be) of brake levers against my new van's tailgate window.
There's the handlebars, swinging around to bop me in the head during my futzing
with the bike's position. And finally, there's the part where the little
Islabike topples off the rack as I make adjustments and lands wheels up - how
is that even possible, I ask you - in the driveway. It was a mess, but as I
said earlier (lol, right Joe Bernard?), my clothes were cute. The black grease
stripe across my forehead that I discovered later - not as cute.

I'm SURE I could recreate this, hahahaha!

Happy Monday, my friends!

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-04-09 Thread LeahFoy
My Saris Freedom 4 Bike Rack arrived and I had some spare time today. There I
was: socket wrenches, Allen keys, nuts, bolts, and steel bars. It was kind of a
mess but my outfit was cute, so there's that. I got a new (to me) Honda
Odyssey, and had the towing package installed for such a time as this. I've
spent enough money by now that I am really hoping for success with this new
rack.

This install would have gone more smoothly with help, but I needed to know
exactly how this thing works - backwards, forwards and upside downwards -
because when I drive across the country this summer with the kids, who's gonna
help me THEN? Not my husband, because he is smart enough to catch a flight and
let me do the hauling, that's what. But I am the carrier-outer of shoddy plans,
so I'll make the drive and feel smug and superior for having tackled it.

Anyway, I should (and very well may) write a new thread detailing this rack,
but for now let me say geez, that was hard work. Assembly - fine. The manual
isn't great but the website gives great how-to videos, and using them together
got me the desired result. Getting the bikes mounted? Good heavens what an
ordeal. This thing is going to work, and that's the good news, but I'm not
looking forward to using it. I'm 5' 6" and hoisting that 52 Clem H was really
something. The rack is a decent height off the ground and the wheels trays
weren't yet set correctly, and wow. Hard. Up next was the Bets, and with
baskets and pedals it was a tight fit. I got her settled, and the frame clamps
seem like they won't hurt the bikes' paint, and everything seemed secure. I got
the boys' smaller bikes on more quickly and the whole rack tilts down for trunk
access, even with the bikes loaded!

That's the mini update for now. I know some of your were also rack-hunting, so
just wanted to pop in here and let you know the Saris is probably pretty good,
since most of you are men and therefore bigger of frame and height than me. You
will have less trouble, I think.

I'm in the minority here in that I'm a bike minimalist. I've got TBBITW (The
Best Bike in the World), a 2012 55cm Betty Foy. My husband has a 52 Clem H, in
case I need a back-up bike. I've admired the other mixtes Rivendell has to
offer - oh, how I love them! - but I don't NEED them. I use my bike to get
around the neighborhood and haul the boys' things to school, the park, etc. and
this bike just works. In my 30s I have decided greed is a very unattractive
quality that I saw in myself. I figured greed was something worth guarding my
heart against, and I decided the antidote is contentment + gratitude. So, I'm
savoring my rides on my pretty blue bike with the red lug hearts, though I
reserve the right to change it up every now and again with a new bag. I think
it's a pretty good compromise!

I almost didn't write this because I worried some of the N+1 crowd may take
offense (please don't! I'm talking only about me, not you!) but then I saw The
Wheelhouse posted something excellent on their new blog and I thought it
captured my sentiments pretty well. And pictured is a Rivendell Sam Hillborne -
swoon!

So, if anyone is on the fence wondering if they need another, here's proof you
can be happy as a gopher in new dirt with just one bike. Grin.

[RBW] Car Bike Rack

2017-03-27 Thread LeahFoy
Hi, All,

Over the weekend I replaced my old Honda Odyssey with a newer model,
necessitating a new hitch. The new van has light leather interior which would
show tire marks if I stowed kid bikes back there. I decided now would be ideal
to get a rack meant for 4 bikes (our old Hollywood rack held 2). I have my
fendered Betty Foy, my husband's Clem, and two kid bikes.

Jon (of Colorado on the list) gave me some options and I ended up choosing a
Saris rack that seems ideal for fendered bikes. I'm passing this info along in
case any of you are in the market. REI is having a 20% off sale, plus dividends
are now available. The rack should have cost $520, but I got out the door for
$388. Happy shopping!

Great points, Joe and John! John, that lithe bag is THE perfect pannier for a

I meant to stay with the tan color I already have, but I liked the gray best

like a clutch/handbag than the bar tube does. There is nothing better than
buying a new Rivendell bike, but second to that is buying new bags for a
Rivendell bike. I cannot wait.

[RBW] Sackville Multisack

2017-03-03 Thread LeahFoy
I rarely have pockets, except in winter when I'm wearing coats. Mom and Dad
sent me money for my birthday this year, so maybe I'll order a Sackville
Multisack to attach to my Bosco bars to hold my iPhone and pepper spray. I've
got bags for everything else, but just not items I'd like to get at quickly. I
haven't read much anywhere on the multisack and wonder if it's worth the cost.
Also, wonder when the promised blue color will arrive?

Thanks!

This is all very fascinating. Interesting that Steve has also had the Velocity
wheels go bad on him. I honestly had no idea Velocity has a history of problems
with the rims or I might have contacted them. I noticed today the front wheel
is still the Velocity I had prior; no cracks, but I'll be watching.

Maybe I'm harder on stuff than you guys are. I remember you all being confused
that I had bent a Wald basket, but it is indeed good and bent. And then there's
the shifter I also seem to have worn out. Oh, and maybe I had it coming with
the broken wheel. I get a kick out of crashing over bumps without rising out of
the saddle. There's something amusing about it. You should try it. But maybe
not on Velocity rims.

Re: [RBW] New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-20 Thread LeahFoy
Hey guys, remember how we were talking about a dream custom Clementine (don't
make me call it a Clem!) with more lugs? Did you see the photos of the blue
custom mixte on Grant's Blahg today? It looks like someone almost made one!
There's swoopy stays in back, and even though there's no swooptie-tube, that
sloping tube looks lower than the standover my Bets has!

I called the two shops that have our bikes. The Hotrock isn't yet done as
they're missing a tool needed to put rivets in the bottle cage holes, and my
wheel didn't come in! If I can get the Hotrock tomorrow I'll take the Husband
Clem for our Wednesday ride to school. It's tricky, but with my Back-a-Bike
bags on his rear rack, I can probably make it work. I mean, it's not likely
I'll crash my way down the hill, right? I can totally handle that dangerous top
tube, would you say? I don't *think* I'll get killed. Say a prayer.

Anyway, the weather was nasty over the weekend, but when the sun emerged every
person who owns a bike was riding. I nearly veered into a curb admiring a rider
and his setup on my way to Home Depot. My birthday's days away and my husband
asked for a hint (presents are my love language!) and I said "Rivendollars." He
asked me to explain and I just said someday I want a really, really nice
Rivendell. And this will be like money towards that bike someday. He thinks
he's getting off easy 

Patrick, the bike was purchased late 2012, and that wheel and tire were

Well, the shop called and said good news(!) your chain's got life left and we
trimmed your fender and reattached your mudflap. Bad news(!) the spokes are
pulling away from the rim (or something) and the rear wheel should be replaced.
Fine, whatever, just restore her to her former glory, I said. "Oh good, we'll

and all my joy drained out of me at the prospect of being bikeless for several

cruel tragedies. A Cheviot done up in red and cream, I think.

I love, love, love mixes. My MIL has a Clementine, and that will be the one

Re: [RBW] New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-15 Thread LeahFoy
I don't know whether to feel proud or embarrassed about that tire! On the one
hand, I wrung out every last drop. On the other hand, geez, I'd rather pay for
new tires than hospital bills! I was doing my make-up this morning and
imagining how I might look missing half my teeth. That tire never did fail me.
I nervously rode it the 2 mile uphill journey home, laden with all the stuff,
and still, all was well. If you knew what I ninny I am about injury, you'd know
I would never have made this decision on purpose - it's just that the side view
of the tire made it look fine under that fender. But since that view was rather
obscured, I looked at the front one and since it was ok, I figured so was the
rear. How wrong I was! I'm a registered nurse, formerly working in the
Emergency Department, and I am risk-adverse to say the least. This morning I
immediately loaded up TBBITW, TSBBITW ("The Second Best Bike in the World"
Jonas' Clem) and the 24 inch Specialized Hotrock to take them for tune-ups.

Bill, I made sure to stress that they evaluate my chain. I'm having my front
fender trimmed back so it doesn't drag on grass nor bump the curb anymore. I
told them to address the faulty washers/missing washers in my Silver friction
shifters, and had them look at the brakes. I don't know what tires they're
putting on there, but the mechanic seemed to want to replace them with the same
tires again.

My husband's Clem was making a rubbing noise at a hub and they're going to fix
that. Also, I asked them how much $ for index shifting? It's just painful to
listen to him shift, you guys. I don't know why this is so hard. The guy is
extremely high functioning but he can't shift his bike without major theatrics.
But he's darling, so whatever.

Ah, now the Hotrock. (I feel like making a Kids Bikes That Have Stood the Test
of Time thread so we can all chime in about great kiddo bikes and how we've
used and abused them. It's not Riv content, but since Riv doesn't offer kid
bikes I feel like we could bend the rules *wink.*) That bike, can you believe
this, has lasted from Easter of 1st grade to present day 5th grade. We bought
it too big, but E grew into it and has put countless miles on it ever since. He
also needed new tires (I felt sheepish when they noticed this just as we were
wheeling it in), needed his water bottle bosses fixed (frame defect that made
them loosen, fall out and can't be put back on without "rivets."), and - horror
- his rear brake cable was ready to snap. $148 for his bike alone. I hesitated,
but only for a second, because I think that bike will claim vintage status in
the family someday. My parents saved my little brother's rad little white steel
Schwinn and it was my boys' all-time favorite to ride whenever we went back
home during the summer.

So, all in all, a good day. I didn't smash my face in on a crash down the Hill
from Hades, and my son's brakes held up, and everyone gets a new and improved
bike in a few days' time, and the LBS gets some money. Thanks for all your
advice here! I used it all at the LBS!

Re: [RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-29 Thread LeahFoy
Ah, the MUP etiquette. It's confounding, isn't it? I've tried ringing bells,
but what I mean as a pleasant alert ends up seeming like honking to
pedestrians. I took a leaf out of Grant's book and put jingle bells on the
kids' bikes. They were clearanced at $1 apiece, and they wrap securely around
the bars with a strong velcro closure. Thus, people hear us coming as we jingle
down the path. But for the "zombies" - folks with ear buds or phones, I just
call out in my cheeriest voice, "Good morning!" and that works splendidly.
Sometimes I yell compliments - "Love your backpack!" "What a cute dog you
have!" "Working hard! Looking good!" I know some folks are irritated initially
because they don't expect us, but it's hard to be snarky with a rider who
cheerfully calls out a morning greeting to you. "On your left" was dicey, as
people often move left, and kids don't understand it. So, cheerfulness and
compliments are the way to go, in my humble opinion!

Leah, who rides TBBITW (The Best Bike in the World) cheerfully through the
suburbs.

2016-12-02 Thread LeahFoy
I hail from North Dakota (which hereafter shall be referred to as God's
Country) where deer hunting is also alive and well. There is no school on the
opener to this day.

Our friendly neighbors to the east in Minnesota are in muzzleloader season. One
of my best friends just got her for a few days ago after hours in a tree,
perched on a deer stand out in the cold. It was her first time missing the
spinal cord, which affords a clean and quick death, but fortunately a liver
shot is also deadly. She field dressed it herself and sent it to be processed
at a meat plant as venison to feed her family.

I might also add that hunters are usually very respectful of wildlife and great
conservationists. I add that because some not from the culture may have a
different impression when they read this.

Bill - Merry Christmas indeed! TWO new Rivendells?!? I don't know how you can
stand the excitement. I nearly tipped over last year when we got my husband's
Clem.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Goat Gloves

2016-11-29 Thread LeahFoy
Bill - I feel like we may need to hear a story about your BA mom!
Ray, housecoat and slippers, never! But always boots and broth! I would also
add your niece is lucky.
Garth, yes, the distinction must be made. Although, I don't think my sons have
figured out that I'm not cool and that they should put a respectable distance
between us. Actually, I think they'd wear this hat if I'd let them - it's
rabbit fur and they LOVE rabbit fur. That Mad Bomber hat is from my college
days back at North Dakota State, when I wore it to withstand the subzero temps
as I trudged to class on the coldest of winter days. So, if I got it in 2000,
is it vintage yet? After living in the desert for 13 years, I don't know why
I've hauled it with me on all three moves through the Southwest, but I'm so
glad I did!

Linda - loving your gloves and looking at them on Amazon today!

Ryan, the bicycle bus is mostly just us. They're dropping like flies out there,
and especially now that the highs are in the 50s. People have asked me, "What
are you going to do now that it's too cold to ride?" They don't know about my
hearty northern roots, so I try not to give them a withering look. Instead, I
give them grace and spare them the lecture. I just chirp, "There is no bad
weather, there is only bad clothing!" The first crossing guard we ride by on
our route told me he loves to see us ride. It reminds him of something his mom
would have done with him, only he says it would have been frowned upon in the
50s so she didn't. I don't know why? Also, we may have a convert in the near
future, as a mother has recognized me and said, "My sons want to ride to school
with you. They think you guys are so cool. But my older son was hit by a car on
his bike while in the crosswalk a year ago, and we haven't gotten the courage
to let him ride again." So, maybe in the future they'll join us. Maybe. The
thing I still get all the time is this: "I just don't know how you make it up
that hill on that beach cruiser!"

Ah, well. Back to the search for gloves.
Leah

Does anyone have these:

I have a cheap pair of velvet gloves that are worn thin. I need a new pair and
thought I'd look at Riv first. These won't win me any beauty contests, but if
they were really wonderful, I'd just as soon give Riv the business. There are
no reviews and only one photo. Anyone have and love these?

Thanks!

[RBW] Taking Risks

I got to school and realized I don't have my bike lock. I'm here only for an
hour or two to volunteer in my son's 2nd grade class. I have no choice but to
leave The Best Bike in the World unlocked in the rack in front of the school
office. TBBITW is finally set up exactly the way I've always dreamed - Big
Nitto Front Rack, Big Nitto Back Rack, baskets and bags galore, and all the
other accoutrements. It would be a crying shame to lose it now. All I can think
about is this week's post from The Bike Snob about his stolen bike - which he
left at HIS son's school!

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-28 Thread LeahFoy
Thanks, All, you are too kind. It's fun for me to type out my thoughts for the
like-minded to read. I have zero real-life biking friends, so you all are
indispensable!

Yesterday was near disaster for the Bicycle Bus. My oldest bus kid is in 8th
grade and they don't come any sweeter. She was bringing up the rear as we
headed down the Hill That Would Make Cipollini Cry. A ways down I heard my son
call out to me, so I slowed and swiveled my head, trying not to lose control of
the giant front load in my abused Wald basket. There was L, in the street where
vehicles whiz by at 55 mph. The curb melted away and provided her a way back up
onto the sidewalk and we were once again on our way. But close to campus, I
noticed she was behaving oddly on her bike. When the sidewalk narrowed so that
we must walk the bikes, I waited up for her to ask what kind of shenanigans had
happened at the back of the bus. "I lost my brakes!" she cried.

!!!

That's what I thought. It's like a quote.

Anyway, she continued, "And then this black piece of my shifter - it just FLEW
OFF - and I called after it, 'Wait, come back!!!' but it was gone. And then my
shifter wanted to be in 1 and I had to squeeze it tight the entire ride so it
would stay in gear. And that made it hard to also squeeze the brakes. But then
I noticed my brakes were no longer working. I was coming up on L [my little
son] and I didn't want to make him crash, so I veered off into the road just as
a big truck went by! I knew this bike was going to give me trouble. I looked at
it this morning and I said, 'You're going to give me trouble today, aren't
you?'."

Aghast, I said, YOU ARE NEVER RIDING THAT BIKE AGAIN OR I WILL HAVE 5
CORONARIES.

As I unloaded the Betty Foy, the kids all parked their bikes. L gave one final
exclamation that got my attention. "My front tire is flat!" she squealed.

No, I'm not kidding. Folks, you can't make this stuff up. So, I hugged her,
said a prayer of thanksgiving to Jesus and I texted her mother and told her
what had happened. I'm hoping and praying I never see that Schwinn again.

Today the Bicycle Bus was attended only by us. But we had so much fun because
strange weather is moving through our neck of the woods, and it is lovely. Big,
puffy cotton candy clouds floated over us. The sun left streaks of color in the
sky. Dark and heavy clouds cruised by swiftly, having not yet decided to pour
out their raindrops. And in the distance, hovering over our route was a
RAINBOW. The boys were so excited because this one looked to end right about
where the school would be. The boys have never given up hope of actually
reaching a rainbow and discovering there really might be a pot o' gold for them
there. The crossing guard near our house called out, "Save some gold for me!"
We wouldn't have, though, because we would have spent it all at the bike store
getting new bikes for the Bicycle Bus passengers. Rainbows are sneaky, and we
were eluded yet again, but that didn't detract from the joy of the pursuit nor
the fun of the ride.

And on a comical note, there is a goofy kid worth telling about. There is an
elementary school close to my house, and those kids let out at the time I'm
heading to get my kids at their school. This goofball kid, who I'd put at about
3rd grade, has gotten a new scooter. He has to take it down The Hill That Would
Make Cipollini Cry, which even I would never attempt. There are a pair of blond
brothers who do it every day on their scooters, and the goofball must be their
friend. They are now a trio. The brothers are way more street smart, as they've
been at it awhile. The goofball is a disaster. His scooter is pretty cool, with
big, fat, black tires, and he knows it. As I came behind him, he began chirping
about the splendor of his new scooter. Then, he did exactly what comes
naturally to little boys with new wheels: "Race ya!" he called. He took up the
whole path and would unpredictably swerve this way and that. I was stuck behind
him, riding my brakes and looking on in amusement. He talked the entire way
down the hill, not that I could make a single word of it out. He was blithely
happy with himself, whatever he was chattering about, and I waved goodbye as he
turned right into his neighborhood. I caught him again today. "You again!" he
chirped. And then something about racing, and we started the whole experience
over again.

You can't make this stuff up.
Leah

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-25 Thread LeahFoy
*The below is really just storytelling about a neighborhood and its kids and
their bikes. There won't be anything informative or life-altering. It's really
just my reflections on bringing back cycling in the suburbs.*

We've been having a lot of new experiences on our bicycle bus. Lots of kids
come and go, and no one rides every day, save us, but we usually have a a
couple of kids join us. One day, we picked up a group of 3 girls. N is a 5th
grader who was a guest of the regular pair of sisters who join us. N's little
sister was being worked up for a possible cancer diagnosis, and her mother had
sent her to stay with family friends for a couple of days. She was thrown into
the bicycle bus without any say in the matter and when I met her that morning,
she was white with panic.

"Are you scared?" I asked her. "No," she said, "I'm TERRIFIED."

Okay then. I tried to puff up her courage a bit, and we set off down the giant
hill, traveling more slowly than normal. We made it to campus without incident
and N took a deep breath and began to focus on more important matters. "I like
your bike," she said, "because it has hearts and apples!" It's the little
things.

A family of 4 has been joining us as we ride by their house at least twice per
week. Both parents like to come when they can, and they have a 3rd grader and
2nd grader. Those kids are riding Diamondback bikes in their proper sizes,
which are a major improvement from the cheap and too-small sized bikes the rest
of the kids ride. But the Diamondbacks are still heavy what with their
suspension forks and all, and they have no way to carry luggage or water. Mom
rides an Electra and Dad has a Gary Fischer mountain bike. Mom and Dad take
the backpacks and use a Camelback water system, which they share. I sent Mom a
link to racks for her Electra, and she is looking into purchasing one.

The pair of sisters L and G may get new bikes for Christmas. L rides her
mother's big, fendered cruiser-type bike, which has a rear rack. She's been to
Walmart, dreaming of which bike she would like. I bite my tongue, but I really
want to tell her to look for a Specialized on Craigslist. The Hotrock can take
a rack and has been a great bike for my older son. G is on a Barbie bike that
is a mere 20 inches and she is a 5th grader. It is painful to watch her wobble
to school with her knees knocking her chin, and her lunch bag swinging madly
from her bars.

The bike racks at school are now full to bursting with bikes and scooters. It's
a welcome sight, but also gives me a pang of sadness. Almost none of the bikes
are good for commuting. Most are woefully small for the rider. M is a kid who
describes his dad as being a "bike racer." M was given a new lime green
Specialized Hotrock to ride to school. The problem is that M is a 5th grader,
and he is riding the 20 inch bike. It would fit my 2nd grader. He loves the
bike; I know he does because he tried and tried to ride it, and lime green
appears to be his favorite color. But wobbling home while having to carry your
35 lb backpack and Chromebook and lunch sack and eventually, a musical
instrument wasn't feasible. So now he walks. He trudges along, laden with stuff
and his shiny lime Hotrock sits, neglected in the garage.

We live in an affluent area. Most of these kids are shuttled to school with
zero effort of their own, and zero discomfort. It's a valet line in the car
loop. A school employee opens your door, and you jump out. That's IT. That's
the end of your obligation to get to school, kid. Meanwhile, the kids who are
trying to get there by bike are doing it on the most ill-fitting, ill-equipped
machines. Their parents would say a quality bike is too expensive; but they
don't say that when plunking down the money for their child's new iPhone. This
is not a problem I can fix, so I am learning to let it go...

The new issue I'm seeing on our horizon is that of unhappy pedestrians. We had
6 kids and 2 moms bookending them on Thursday, and that's a lot of bikes. We
live in a terribly car-centric area. Everyone commutes by car into the city,
which means cars are heading down our mountain at around 50 mph. There is no
shoulder, and no bike lane, and only one road and we all must share it. We
were, however, blessed with extra wide sidewalks; they are actually called
"trails" and given their width, I heartily agree. The problem is that
pedestrians of all types - dog walkers, joggers, moms with strollers - often
don't understand they aren't the only ones using the trails. They zig zag and
walk on the left, or just take up the whole thing and walk right in the middle.
This poses a problem. I really get the feeling that they think of bell-ringing
as honking. No one has ever responded positively to it, that I can tell. So,
rather than *ding ding*, before I pass, I call out, "Good morning!" They
usually get the hint and either move over or hold their line. It's all mostly
smooth until

Re: [RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-31 Thread LeahFoy
Doug, you know what? The rubber on the Specialized's tires IS dry and
brittle-feeling! We got the bike Easter of his 1st grade year and he is now a
5th grader. Yikes. Ok, I'll take it in this weekend. The Islabike is new and
should be fine. My tires are from 2012. I have wondered how I will know when
it's time. I don't think they feel as bad as the Specialized, though.

I'll take a closer look at the rack tomorrow, but I think I'm stuck. If I lower
the bag, the clip on bottom that secures the bag to the rack becomes too low.
It sits lower than the rack and there is nothing for it to grab onto. The
little backpack gets one Backabike. The huge backpack will never fit in the
other Backabike. It has to go in the basket or rear rack, I think. The
Chromebook will probably go in the other Backabike bag when he gets it next
week. I guess I need another bag for ME .

[RBW] Re: Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-30 Thread LeahFoy
Brian, your kids! How SWEET. Love your setup. I didn't have quite that setup,
but I did pull L on a Trek tag-along for a few years. I was happy when he
became independent because I could finally take the ugly black hitch off my
seat post and let the Betty be as beautiful and unfettered as she was meant to
be.

Clementine59 - I hope you can make your goal! I wish I could do most of my
errands by bike, but I am not able (or ready) to give up the van just yet.
(Side note: I do think more people will do just that, however. The advent of
driverless cars and Uber and such wonders will make drivers' licenses rather
unnecessary. So, if you can't get there by bike, those options are wonderful.
Maybe I'll give up the van yet!) Do you live in a bike-friendly place? How I
envy you if you do. Everything is here car-centric and spread out for miles,
and then there are the mountains along the way. I told my husband the next time
we move, I want to live somewhere bike-friendly. We do have great weather most
of the year, though, so there's that!

Have you shown us your Clementine yet? We'd love to see it!

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-29 Thread LeahFoy
René, ooh, I LOVE the bars. They do let me sit up nice and high, and unless on
a steep climb, I rarely think about them, which, like saddles, means they're
great. I got Riv's new long, skinny cork grips! I watched the twining video 100
times and finally got what Mark was doing there. I just kept thinking, "Leah,
you can braid hair French, Dutch, upside down, standing on your HEAD; you can
figure this out!" And so I did. Then I shellacked it. I'm super good at
shellacking. And to prove it, I did it four times. Then I noticed my husband's
Clem over there and attacked it with a fresh coat, too. I looked around for
more stuff to shellac but there was nothing, so reluctantly I put imy brush
away. (Side note: do you all think it's spelled "shellac" as a noun but
"shellack" as a verb? It looks right to me.) The bars have 3 quirks: 1. They
make the bike want to tip over more easily. 2. I have caught myself veering off
a bit and it was not a quick an easy correction. It scared me a bit. 3. The
width works totally different muscles on a climb. My triceps and trapezius
muscles are working. Fine with me.

But I digress.

The Ride Home. Well, you all didn't pray for me because it was AWFUL. It was
hot. Hot, hot, hot. Sweltering, stifling, oppressive heat, with nary a cloud in
the sky for help. I arrived early because one of my quirks is a continual fear
of being late. So, there I stood. In triple digit heat with no shade. Like a
fool. I finally collected my 3 charges, only to have one say he forgot his
Hydroflask and would be right back. We stood there forever. He comes back with
no Hydroflask. Alright, I guess I'm sharing my water. The boys looked a little
wilted at the start, but the girl, T, was just about done in by the second
block. I kept promising it would get better as the weather cools and her
muscles adapt. But she insisted on walking most of that mile-long hill. I had
to wear my little guy's backpack, and haul my 5th grader's heavy beast of a
pack in my basket. I shoved some of T's notebooks in my saddlesack to lighten
her load. She had no kickstand, so I had to hold her bike at water breaks,
while fighting to keep mine from toppling with its huge front load. Something
was wrong and she couldn't shift to an easier gear. She had her enormous
backpack on her back, and it was way too much. The boys' style was severely
cramped by all the waiting, but they have kind hearts, so wait they did without
complaint. She walked a lot. Slowly. I waited a lot. The boys found shade a
ways up ahead and laid on the sidewalk like homeless kids. Not wanting to leave
her too far behind, I stood in the blazing sun while she plodded along, and
suddenly strange things started happening to me. As I poured sweat (highly
uncharacteristic), I noticed my lips had gone completely, uncomfortably dry. I
got goosebumps - as if I was becoming cold. I started to get an impending sense
of doom, like I might not make the rest of this darn climb, and I began
wracking my brain to remember the signs of heat exhaustion/heat stroke. I was
past the point of feeling like water was helpful. I had very little left in me.
Near the end, I sent the boys ahead so at least they could get home and get
cool.

I honestly don't know how, but we all made it. I dropped T off, unloaded my
bike, got inside, laid on cool tile and ate a lime fruit bar and drank water. I
could have wrung the sweat out of my shirt. The boys and I jumped in the pool
and were good as new. T has decided she no longer wants to do the ride. Her
mother REALLY wants her to do the ride. She wants to practice with her this
weekend and get her a front basket. I said if that doesn't work, I had a new
bike suggestion. "Anything that would help!" she said. I think an Islabike in
her size with the rack, which holds 39 lbs and Ortlieb panniers would work. And
it's light and she can even have a kickstand. I sent the info and we'll see.
The mom believes T is being lazy (I don't think so) but she's from South
Africa, and maybe in that country this is not much to ask of a South African
child. American kids, on the other hand...well, they were all surely pointing
and laughing at us from the back seats of their air-conditioned motherships.

René, sorry you missed out on cycling to school. I envy your kids' flat
commute! Thank you for my new bars. I'll have great triceps, thanks to them!

[RBW] Re: Hub area bag/rack mounting hacks

2016-08-27 Thread LeahFoy
Do you guys mind posting the link to this hardware that you are using? I just
bought the Backabike bags from Rivelo today, and I'm curious. I don't even
know if I want to take the bags on and off yet, it's just too soon to tell what
needs I will have for the school year. But it would be nice to know what you
are using for quick on and off if it's no trouble to send the link. Thanks!

[RBW] Hub area bag/rack mounting hacks

2016-08-27 Thread LeahFoy
I'm leaving a comment here so I get these responses. I'm wondering the same.
I'm considering a pair of Backabike bags for our school commute and I've heard
the lament about the mounting not being wonderfully easy...

[RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-08-26 Thread LeahFoy
School begins on Monday, and we have before us a number of challenges. The
school is in its second year, and it has exploded in population. There was
nearly no parking to begin with, and with the second school in the neighborhood
also convening in the morning and with the canyon's whole workforce trying to
get out for their 25 minute commute with but one single road that we all must
share, biking is a NO-BRAINER. But nearly no one, excepting us, has done it.
The school is 2 miles from my door (too far to walk), all downhill to school,
and all uphill on the way home. The hill is so steep that a child really needs
brakes of good quality for the downhill, and a bike that isn't too heavy (these
are just kids, remember) and has GEARS for the way uphill. Also ideal would be
a bottle cage for water since we live in Vegas and a rack. But a rack is
probably asking too much.

I mentor the junior high girls from church (I heart teenagers!), and one of my
little favorites, L, will attend our school. She and her little sister plan to
use their electric scooter and bike to join us. She babysits a boy who will
ride with us on his own bike. Another family I'm acquainted with asked if their
5th grader could join us. As I was leaving campus after the meet and greet
today, I heard L yell, "Leah! We have some more coming!"

"More what?" I asked.
"More girls!" she called.
"Riding bikes?" I asked, incredulous.
"Yes, my mom's getting all their information, I'll tell you later!"

So, there you have it. Leah's Bicycle Bus is born!

You might imagine I have some anxiety about the logistics. Even more about the
liability. I have a plan worked out, and I'll tweak it as need arises.

Now, for the question.

My only-5th grade-son has been reclassified as a middle-schooler. He must carry
all his books/folders/etc in his backpack. They tell me, "Oh, and here's his
Chromebook for the year. It goes home with him every night."

SERIOUSLY?

My Betty Foy has a Nitto Big Front Rack with the biggest Wald they make. The
back has a lighter duty rack that was acting as a support for my medium
Saddlesack. This is not going to carry both sons' bags and lunches now that my
"middle-schooler" must schlep around everything he owns. Also, what happens if
one of the neighborhood kids needs me to haul something? I called Riv and Will
listened and we both thought I would need the Big Back Rack, so I ordered it.
Now, I wonder if I should continue to use my medium saddlesack or if I should
order the large. Or maybe just add Back-a-Bike-bags, which are out of stock for
now. Will suggested: http://www.carsickdesigns.com/products/large-pannier-set
but I don't love them very much.

Someone chime in and tell me what's the best way to carry all this weight.

Thanks once again! L

[RBW] Re: DIY crate for the Clem

2016-08-23 Thread LeahFoy
Oh, you won't be hearing from him. He likes to read about himself over my
shoulder, but he would never admit that he's a Rivendell convert. He still
believes he could go back to his Target bike and it would be no big deal. He
will ride to the park and in our neighborhood, but there is no epic bike
adventure in his future plans. He does it for his family, folks. And for the
little bit of attention he gets when I write goofy stories about him on the
Internet and everyone says, "Oh, wow, now that crate really is something!"
