[RBW] FS: modern cockpit and drivetrain for your Riv

2023-05-13 Thread Neil Doran
Hi all, I'm selling a SRAM 2x10 speed setup that I had on my Sam for a
couple of years. It is a super fun setup and works great. It's all very
lightly worn.

I'd like to get $350 for the entire setup, or see suggested la carte
pricing below. Let me know if I am way off on price for this stuff! Buyer
pays shipping if not local to the Sacramento/Bay Area side of things.

As far as trade the only things I'm looking for are a Nitto wavie bar, a
quill bullmoose bar, and possibly some bar-top friction shifters or perches.

- 46cm Salsa Cowchipper bar (31.8 clamp) - $25
- SRAM Force Double Tap levers (2x10) for mechanical brakes - $100
- Velo Orange removable faceplate quill stem (31.8 clamp), zero degree
rise, brushed finish - $40
-> or $150 for the entire cockpit as-is, which includes still-nice
Brooks bar tape

- SRAM carbon crankset, 50/34, 172.5 mm arms, GXP interface with bottom
bracket - $150
- SRAM GX long-cage rear mech with Wolf Tooth road link - $50
- SRAM Rival front mech - $20
- Sun Race 11-42 cassette and 10 speed chain: $20 or FREE to whomever buys
the whole enchilada.

Two saddles, both in as-new condition.
- The original C17 (with metal seat loops) in slate color.
- The newer C-17 carved (all weather edition in black).

Each one is $75 shipped CONUS, or name a fair price and let's go from there.

Definitely a fan of loose, long sleeves here in hot n dry Sacramento, CA
area. Any of the 'sun shirts' marketed by the likes of REI do the trick for
me, but my favorite is a 50/50 number I got at the local thrift store for
$5. Been wearing that one for a few years now, cannot believe the quality.
Why is it my favorite? One word: SNAPS. I just love snaps over buttons,
especially with gloves. I wish more makers would oblige this bit of
functionality.

Re: [RBW] Re: Camping bikes

2020-04-23 Thread Neil Doran
Collin, perhaps we could continue the thread drift a bit, because the 'east
side Lost Sierra' route you are describing has been of large interest to me
as well. My initial version is to ride from home (Rocklin) to Truckee,
north around Stampede Reservoir and generally along the HWY 89 corridor
through Sierra Valley (my happy place!). Maybe make it as far north as Lake
Davis, then back through Portola and Graegle, up through Lakes Basin,
Downieville, and some route home from there. Maybe 3-4 days for that?

All great riding, but the first part from Rocklin to Truckee is a bit
daunting. The most straightforward route I have found is Foresthill Divide
out to Soda Springs Road, which connects to Old 40 at Donner Pass. That
would be a day and a half of riding for me, and only the Soda Springs part
is dirt, unless I wanted to be creative and ride the Western States.

Are you able to share your route from Sac to Truckee?

[RBW] FS - Caldera Cone alky stove setup

2020-04-23 Thread Neil Doran
Been trying to sell this on another site (Backpacking Light) and figured
the Riv crowd might be interested. Not sure what shipping will be, but I'll
cover the first ten bucks of shipping for my price of $30.

For sale is a lightly used Caldera Cone system, purchased new from Trail
Designs about four years ago. Included is the alcohol stove, aluminum cone,
tyvek sleeve for the cone, stakes to set pot in cone (not needed depending
on the pot), alcohol bottle, tiny dosing cup, and stuff sack for the entire
system including pot. The stuff sack is starting to unravel a bit. I’ll
include the no-name pot, unless you don’t want it, then subtract $5.

About the pot, because obviously the cone is built around this vessel…it is
about 1.2L capacity (water filled to the handle rivet, about 1″ below the
rim) and measures 5 7/8″ diameter and 4 1/8″ tall. Nothing special, this is
a very common pot, but there is no name marked on the unit. It is aluminum
pot with non-stick coating that is starting to flake on the outside but is
FULLY INTACT on the inside surface. Bail handle, good fitting lid, not
warped or damaged. Lots of life left.

I’d like $30 shipped CONUS, or $25 if you don’t want the pot. Paypal f,
or buyer covers fees.

2020-04-22 Thread Neil Doran
Great thread, looks like most of the options are covered!

In honing my Riv-style dirtbagging setup, I've found it is very hard to
beat a front basket on a solid rack with a bungee net to handle overflow.
That is the core of my system, paired with a Carsick bartender bag and a
Swift burrito bag. That is a lot of front-end storage, which I love. I add
an Acorn transverse saddle bag, an older one which is about 7L or so. Can
also strap stuff outside the saddle bag if necessary.

This system is good for several nights as long as I don't need to ferry too
much food or water.

OK, here is a question from a generally Luddite sorta 'guy'...

How does one check PMs in this group? I am viewing this content on a
'Google groups' platform. I see no control or toggle for 'PM'.

In messaging back and forth with other users, messages have always flowed
seamlessly via email (gmail, in my case, and for most others)...is that
what you mean by 'PM'?

Hope I have not missed a whole raft of messages!!!

[RBW] Re: Rack choice for Wald basket on a Hillborne

2020-01-03 Thread Neil Doran
Well, I think it depends.

I have been terrifically satisfied with a Mark's Rack M1 on my
caliper-braked Sam...easy setup, looks great, and versatile, should you
want to run a small bag instead of a basket. Always worked great, never
failed.

But I overload my basket on a regular basis and haul my crap on all manner
of track and trail. To drive out all lingering thoughts of rack failure due
to my camping gear, a burrito, and a 12-pack in the rack on the way to the
camping spot, I upgraded to the Nitto Campee front rack...the one with
integrated struts that go all the way to the lower dropout. Not that this
rack could never fail, but I sure don't worry much about it!

Plus the Campee has the removable frames for front panniers, which I
thought I would use all the time, but in reality have never used, as all my
kit fits into the (overloaded) basket and my Acorn seat bag.

But for casual, every day use, hard to beat the M1...

[RBW] Re: ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread Neil Doran
Good stuff here, per the usual. Indeed, I am inquiring generally about
daylight conditions, but fall is here, and winter not far behind!

Gotta say I totally forgot about the yellow ankle band! I have two of the
high quality units that do indeed stick out like a flag. I've used them
during winter commuting and on long rides where I am in and out of tree
shadow, I think the circular motion of something bright yellow must help
with visibility.

I also have suffered behind fellow riders at night that are running
NASA-grade blinky lights. My current setup is the Riv-approved Secula that
mounts on the seat stay. Only one mode (steady on) and one brightness (not
that bright). I've become so fond of the dyno setup with 'always on' lights
and never a thought to charge or batteries.

[RBW] ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread Neil Doran
Over the last few weeks I've had two close calls with automobiles during my
morning commute that really seem to come down to 'I didn't see you'.

I currently have a dyno hub with full-time lights front and rear, and try
and ride predictably, but seems like I need to up my visibility game. I'm
thinking a very bright and loud reflective vest. Needs to be pretty light
weight though, maybe even a mesh.

Any suggestions from the group mind on either vests you have been happy
with, or other tips n tricks for daytime visibility?

[RBW] Re: Recommendations on cycling to Rivendell and around San Francisco and the Bay Area

2019-09-12 Thread Neil Doran
Sounds like a fun trip! You probably already know that October generally
provides THE BEST weather in the Bay Area region.

Wow, for ten days, you could see a lot of stuff. I would make Marin County
a priority. Marin Headlands, Mt. Tam, and Pt. Reyes are all amazing. Easily
2-3 days of riding and sight-seeing, maybe more if you want to sloow
down.

Not terribly sure about lodging...is camping in the mix? That opens options.

Along with all that rambling through Marin, find a way to take the ferry
back to SF or Oakland, it is a fun diversion.

On your Rivendell HQ day, a ride up Mt. Diablo seems in order...pretty
unique views of the East Bay on the way up, and you can see the Sierras
from the summit on a clear day (rather rare, except when windy).

There are some fun road loops in the East Bay (Skyline/Grizzly Peak in
Oakland/Berkeley hills, Three Bears through Briones Regional Park, Riv
folks can direct you to more), but hard for me to say if they are really
tourist-worthy...but they are some of my favorite rides.

Seems like Bay Area visitors are always tempted to hit Napa Valley wine
country, but IMO those roads are really not great for cycling...very highly
traveled, pretty much all year round these days, generally with narrow to
non-existent shoulders. Also I find the vino-culture up there rather
tedious and monotonous, but that's just me.

You can find some very nice, twisty, quite, shaded roads further north
around St Helena, but you will be climbing a lot.

Oh, first weekend in October is Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in SF...if you
are in any way into music, you will find something you like...all free, of
course...and packed...but a pretty special social phenomenon.

Has anybody tried the Bedrocks and found that the toe strap configuration

I am also sad to be missing this...dang, missed the last one, too!

The patches look great, very well done!

My vote for a Saturday ride (in absentia) is Pine Mtn, finishing on BoFax
Road and dropping Jewell Trail right back into camp.

(Repack is fun in a special way, but the White's Hill pavement climb
sucks.)

Which reminds me, anybody riding in the typical way on SFD from Fairfax is
highly encouraged to take the trails through Loma Alta as it cuts out that
terrible pavement climb and replaces it with dirt.

And everyone knows about the Cross Marin trail, right? (I only bring it
up because I met some local-ish folks a few weeks ago who did not know it
existed...)

Have fun!

[RBW] Re: Rain Cape Recommendation

2019-06-24 Thread Neil Doran
I'm a big fan of the Carradice Duxback poncho. Used two seasons now for
daily use and no real complaints. The fabric (waxes canvas?) is heavy and
does not flap much at all. There are two interior nylon loops for your
hands to hold it in place, but with my setup (swept flat bar) it drapes
nicely over the controls and stays in place even without my hands in the
loops (unless it is very windy).
It also has two lengths of webbing attached to the rear interior that you
can tie around your lower back to keep it from flapping up in
back...generally not a concern.

The only part that is not great is the hood. It is not fitted or contoured
in any way, but feels like a pointy little 'gnome hood'. I would prefer a
large hood that would cinch down over my helmet, but this one does better
jammed underneath the helmet. Not real comfy, but does the trick when the
rain is really coming down. The head opening has a 12" zipper that provides
quite a bit of 'battening down', and I stay very dry even without the hood.

The fabric is of course bulky by design but is built to last. Rolled
tightly, it packs down to about the size of a 32 oz Nalgene.

I'm pretty sure I paid under $100 for this one, but I cannot remember.
Those Cleverhoods look quite nice, and I bet they do a better job on the
hood...

[RBW] Swift campout 2019

2019-06-17 Thread Neil Doran
Anybody else observing the Swift campout this year? My little crew has been
doing the same route for at least a few years now, riding from SF thru
Planet of the Apes and ending up at the quite primo hike-n-bike camping at
Half Moon Bay state park.

Bike camping on summer solstice weekend (or closest to it) hits a sweet
spot as it allows me to trade the encroaching heat of the foothills for
coastal breezes; I get to ride through SF, which I love to do at least 2x
per year; and the POTA trail is just so extremely fun and unique.

Anybody else getting out next weekend for a bike overnight?

Statrixbob - I am also the occasional fan of socks n' sandals, especially

accommodate that (just don't use the toe loop), but it messes up the

Steven, those Arubas look nifty! Great toe protection with Keens, very good

It's officially summer here in the low foothills, and I'm back to riding in
sandals. My 3-year-old Chacos (with toe loop) are still going strong, and
at this rate they may never die, but I really don't care for the toe loop.

One option is new Chacos without toe loop (had 'em, loved 'em, took about
10 years to disintegrate).

Also been eyeballing the Bedrock units for a couple o' years now...kinda
like that I could go check them out in person in Richmond and try 'em all
on. They look thinner (and lighter) than Chacos (good!), but wondering if
the toe thong might bug me as much as the Chaco toe loop.

What are people wearing these days? My ideal use is on the bike and around
town...bonus points if they would be good for wet-wading while fishing, and
especially if they were light enough to act as camp shoes while backpacking
(I find the Chacos weight-prohibitive for this purpose).

[RBW] Re: Rides and activities for FotR / Rivmoot / RBWXXV Rivendell Anniversary Campout / Meetup

2019-05-16 Thread Neil Doran
I intend to train down from Sacramento area Friday morning, and could
likely be in Mill Valley by noon and join on the Tam/BoFax portion of the
ride.

I had floated the idea of a Porcupine/Sherwood Forest/Pine Mtn Truck
Road/Bolinas Ridge loop for Saturday, but perhaps that is a bit much,
especially if it is ridden on the way in on Friday.

There is some fun stuff out towards Pt Reyes, such as Inverness Ridge
(singletrack and doubletrack) between Mt Vision and Limantour
Road...possibly followed by an out n' back from Bear Valley.

Nick, thanks, this is excellent! What crank is that? I see the Colnago

[RBW] Brifter setup for my Sam: looking for options

2019-04-30 Thread Neil Doran
I love how my Sam is set up right now: Shimano Sora 3x9 brifters on 44 cm
Salsa Cowchipper. Haven't had a hankering to change this in over a year, so
I think I am sold.

However, I purchased the Sora brifters used, and they are worn. Time for an
upgrade.

When I last looked, Sora and I think Micro Shift were the only 3 x 9
brifters on the market. Should I be thinking about other options, such as
10 sp?

My modest requirements...

- Must be indexed, don't wanna go back to friction.

- Need to use existing rear wheel (standard LX hub).

- Need at least a double up front, cuz of hills and I frequently bike-camp
and otherwise load the bike up.

- Need to be compatible with sidepull brakes.

- Would prefer to reuse the crank (standard RIv Sugino triple) but not
necessary.

What I'm thinking is a wide-low double (28 x 46 ish) and an expanded rear
cassette (likely 10 sp) (11 x 38 ish)...has anybody done a setup like this
before?

Kinda looking for an integrated solution that plays well together and
delivers very good shifting performance. Thanks all!

Yes, the 27f has a threaded 'ear' on the right side that accepts a standard

[RBW] Re: clean-ish routing for generator lights

2019-01-28 Thread Neil Doran
So many excellent responses, thank you!

I neglected to mention that because my Sam has a pump peg, I have a
full-size Zefal that lives permanently beneath the top tube. So it makes
some sense to run the wire along that mess. I also have a permanent mass of
bags in front (Wald basket with shopsack, Swift bar bag, AND a Carsick
Designs stem bag...I love having my cockpit storage), so I'm probably
over-thinking how much a single wire is going to affect the aesthetics on
this rig. I'll see if I can post a pic later today.

Zip ties are probably the appropriate solution here, but I also like the
'dabs of Shoe Goo' approach...I might try the Shoe Goo first, for fun...

As an aside...I attended a S24O this weekend and got the first real
opportunity to use the dyno lights on a mix of pavement, dirt roads, and
trails. I just love the no-thought-required ease of this system. I see the
logic in avoiding the dyno-powered rear light in favor of a battery blinky,
as the rechargeable ones truly do last a long time. But so far I am a fan
of the 'always on' status of a rear tail light (and solid red, no blinky).
I also have a history of rear battery lights bouncing off the bike while
riding in the dirt...I've lost a few that way, but my current Nightrider
version is so small and light, and has a very strong clip, that it has not
happened yet and probably won't.

Another consideration along those lines...the rear Secula light mounted on
the seat stay is in fact a bit ugly, but not enough to overcome the
utility. It sticks out a bit, and may take a beating at some point. On the
Riv staff bikes page, Roman has that light mounted cleanly on the seat tube
just below the seat stay junction, but I always have bags on the saddle, so
that solution is no go for me.

[RBW] Re: clean-ish routing for generator lights

2019-01-25 Thread Neil Doran
Collin, nifty idea! I wouldn't mind a pic or two if you get time. But it
sounds like you might be working with coaxial cable, which is thicker 'n'
stiffer than what I am using, and likely better suited to those P
clamps...but I do have some of those clamps somewhere...

Ttoshi, yes, I have seen reference to helicopter tape. I wonder, for this
application, would regular 3M packing tape do the trick? I kinda like your
idea of running under the top tube with tape, then tape or zip ties as
needed in the rear triangle.

Thanks all! The Bunch rules for this stuff...

[RBW] clean-ish routing for generator lights

2019-01-25 Thread Neil Doran
I just added dyno power and front/rear lights to my Sam. The cabling in the
front along the 27f Nitto rack is straightforward enough, but I am looking
for a clean-ish solution for the rear lamp that is mounted along the left
side seatstay.

Any cool tricks for routing and securing the cable? This bike now lives
fender-free, and sees a lot of dirt action, making me think of staying away
from the down tube and instead running under the top tube. What do folks
use to secure and/or hide the cable? Packing tape? Tiny zip ties?

Thanks,

Neil

[RBW] Re: FotR: Updates, info, questions

2019-01-21 Thread Neil Doran
Hello Ash - Samuel P Taylor is a great place for kids. The Cross Marin
Trail runs right through it, and is a 3-4 mile stretch of perfect, flat
bike path through the redwoods. It runs right along Lagunitas Creek the
whole way, with many opportunities for playing in the creek and checking
stuff out. Plus a couple of great, short hikes as well.

As far as other kid-friendly riding, I think the pickings are rather slim,
but there are some cool options in Pt Reyes...one idea is driving out to
the Pt Reyes visitors center and ride out the Bear Valley Trail...probably
3 miles of wide fire road, then you gotta lock the bikes and walk the rest
of the way to the ocean. Actually, that is a pretty fun outing...the ocean
view is splendid from the bluffs, but there is no beach access.

Another idea is to park at the hostel near the end of Limantour Road and
ride the 2.5 miles of dirt road out to Coast Camp...great beach access
there, along with creeks running into the ocean...generally very kid
friendly.

Both spots are only a short drive from SPT.

[RBW] Re: FotR: Updates, info, questions

2019-01-18 Thread Neil Doran
Most excellent! Was just wondering what the status was. Definitely in here.

I'm still up for rear-leading the Pine Mountain-BoFax ride...looks like it
is about 33 miles, probably just about 50/50 dirt to pavement...lotsa
climbing, but only significant one (I think) is pavement after Alpine Dam.
This one has lots to offer..stellar views (depending on fog), history (Pine
Mt Truck Road, the top of RePack, etc.), side trips galore (Tamarancho,
Pine Mountain, RePack, etc.) for anyone who wants more (not me).

Going our own on food and drink sounds simple to me.

If I can carve out the time I intend to take the train down and do the
'whole enchilada', riding through SF and Marin...but if I drive, I can
bring large quantities of firewood and related supplies. But I would rather
ride.

Thank you for doing the legwork on this.

[RBW] Re: OT- Death Valley on foot

2019-01-14 Thread Neil Doran
The Cottonwood Canyon - Marble Canyon loop seems an obvious candidate...2-3
nights with water sources. Access is via the road out past the air strip
from Stovepipe Wells. That road might be a bit dicey in a rental...there is
some soft sand for a few miles, and some washboard...but I've seen all
manner of cars get through there. Worst case, you could thumb a ride into
the canyon...always lots of friendly folks coming and going.

I've also heard that Fall Canyon has some nice camping...accessed from the
parking lot at the exit from Titus Canyon.

[RBW] Fellowship of the Rigs update: TIME & PLACE

2019-01-04 Thread Neil Doran
Very nice work, completed quickly. Curious about the camping plan: take over
hiker-biker, or reserve sites? Very limited tent space in hiker-biker. Some
good large sites with usable space down by the creek, but the upper sites have
lots of slope and very little usable ground space. Group site seems the logical
option, but need to jump on that, and $$$ for two nights. I think boyz on the
hoodz did that a couple years back, but I think it was winter.

The drag about doing anything in California is the need to reserve.

BUT, I had a dream about a great ride, Sherwood Forest / White’s Hill / Pine
Mtn Road / BoFax Rd / Bolinas Ridge / Gem Trail. I volunteer to lead from
behind!

[RBW] Re: handlebar/stem bags - what do people like?

2018-10-01 Thread Neil Doran
Lotsa good ideas here, as usual. Thanks Bunch!

I picked up a Revelate feedbag yesterday at my local REI and immediately
did not like it...my knee hits it when I stand to pedal. Plus my camera
does not fit, so no go.

I am a dedicated Mark's rack and basket guy (and I load it heavy, ha!).
I've been down the rando bag route, liked it for awhile, but I find Wald
basket plus shopsack is just so versatile.

I found my camera does *just* fit into my Swift bar bag. That spot is kinda
crowded with SIS cables and the aforementioned basket, but it does hold the
camera well. Just not super easy to pull out.

I'll likely stick with what I got, or figure out some sort of padded insert
that can live in my basket.

That Outer Shell is a pretty nifty bag! Basically just what I'm looking

the same spot on the bars, but this one looks more versatile.

I have a Carsick Designs stem bag that I love, but it is first gen meant

Randi Jo looks great, just not sure it is wide enough. I'm sure I would not

Revelate seems to be a standard-bearer, and apparently has one-handed

[RBW] Rolling Coal On That Coastal Stallion

Congrats good Sir, and a very fine bike! It chagrins me to learn that ‘coal’ is

virtuous drivers, copious hiker-biker camping, and ‘live and let live’

I feel it must be vinegar-based.

[RBW] Compass Antelope Pass 700 x 55: the fat tire arms race continues

Just when you thought Compass was out of fat-tire ideas, behold:
https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/tires/700c/compass-700c-x-55-antelope-hill-tc/

I seem to recall Jan stating that 700c tire fatness is optimal at about
35mm, and that going wider is...sub-optimal? Maybe he will chime in here.

I can't imagine many non-disc-brake frames fitting these monsters, but I
wonder if I could squeeze them into my Sam with sidepull 559s. It will only
cost me a small fortune to find out.

[RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-15 Thread Neil Doran
No idea if 26.0 is going away, but depending on what you want, 31.8 may
have way better options. I wanted Salsa bars, so had to go with new 31.8
stem. I don't notice a functional difference, other than the salsa setup
feels flexier than the noodle that preceded it.

You could always buy the 31.8 and shim as needed for max flexibility.

That 0/30 degree extension is interesting...I suppose it will basically
match the reach of your atlantis with trad stem and swept bars?

Velo Orange also has a quill stem with removable faceplate, that is what I
went with at about 80 clams. I like it.

[RBW] Re: Who rides an off-roadish Sam?

Good stuff!

Deacon - I would love to try Jan's knobbies, but I think there is too much
pavement in my world for a high-end knobbie. Based on my experience with
Compass tires, they would wear too quickly.

I've always wanted to try Rock n Roads, but have always heard that they
wear quickly and are loud/slow on roads. They sure look fun for the mud,
tho!

RJM - the Chumba Terlingua has been on my radar, and wow! Custom steel for
$1,500 sounds like a steal! I've also been ogling the All City Cosmic
Stallion, and the Ibis Hakka MX. Of the three, I think I favor the
Stallion.

[RBW] Who rides an off-roadish Sam?

2018-01-31 Thread Neil Doran
I've always loved riding my Sam in the dirt, and regularly 'underbike' my
Sam and my Surly commuter through all manner of trail. Love it.

But a big mixed-terrain ride a few weeks back got me thinking about a more
dirt-capable build. Roman's bike also serves as fodder for the idea:

Really, the lynch pin is high-volume knobbies, and I think the Cazaderos
are the ones to try. Roman thinks they will fit under 559s. I'm thinking
knobbie tires, a short-reach drop bar rather than Noodles, and maybe even
brifters. I'm not manly enough to go 1x, but a hi-lo double might be sweet.

The alternative is a new bike (disk brakes, 650B with room for fatties),
which I really shouldn't do.

Let me know what you have done to off-road your Sam!

[RBW] FS: Acorn boxy rando bag + VO decaleur

2018-01-26 Thread Neil Doran
Acorn boxy rando bag, shows moderate use, but still perfectly functional.
In ranger tan, with the turn buckles on the rear pockets, just like the one
currently listed on their website.

Is fitted with, and I will include, a decaleur from Velo Orange for 1"
threaded stems. For threadless setups, you can swap the receiver for a
1.25" version from VO.

Asking $140 for the bag + decaleur, shipped CONUS. OR, will consider trade
deals for Swift gear or quality, smallish front panniers.

Hmm, no idea why the photos are sideways...

[RBW] ~mixed terrain~ Tour de Placer Roubaix, Auburn, CA - Jan 21 2018

2018-01-09 Thread Neil Doran
Thought this event might be of some interest to Sacramento/foothills/Gold
Country Riv folks...route not yet released, but 50-ish miles, at least 20
on dirt, including infamous Yankee Jim's Road into and out of the NF
American River canyon. Very pretty out there in winter!

Aid stations, post-ride beer and tacos, low entry of $40, benefiting kids
mountain biking...sounds good to me!

[RBW] frame bags on your Riv: anybody tried 'em?

2018-01-08 Thread Neil Doran
I'm contemplating adding a small frame bag (top tube bag) to my 55 cm Sam.
The idea would be to generally replace my Acorn transverse seat bag for
standard rides, and to offer more capacity for bike camping and overnights.
I would expect that the frame bag would live on the bike full time. I like
the smaller frame bag to allow continued use of full-size water bottles.

Revelate looks good for off the shelf, but Rogue Panda offers custom jobs
at very competitive price. Oveja Negra also looks quite nice. Anybody have
real-world, day-to-day experience with a frame bag on their Riv?

[RBW] Rivendell shipping: exceptional!

2018-01-04 Thread Neil Doran
We all know the Riv folks are Jedi box packers, but I have to send a
shout-out to the gang regarding shipping speed. I placed a small order
yesterday at about 3 PM. Twenty minutes later, the order had shipped, and
is now out on the brown truck for delivery! Granted, I only live 100 miles
from Riv HQ, but that is exceptional service, especially with free
shipping. It is this level of service that keeps me off of Amazon.

Well, that, and where else will I find pine tar soap, a cup of beeswax, and
an SKS fender stay kit, all from the same supplier? Only at Riv...

[RBW] Re: Hub Area Rack, with non-Riv bags...can I?

Thanks for all the responses. Pretty sure I'm gonna send my milk money to
