Thank you both. The shifter with its housing would go between the grip and the bar. I’ve been lucky enough to have ridden all of them, but only own Homer and Platy.  I sold my Appaloosa two years ago to buy the Platy.   My test ride on an Atlantis was what sold me on Rivendell.   Leah, BBDD, has a Platy and Clem L.   Clem L rode nicely. Platy is sportier.  I know the wheelbases because there  is a wheelbase limit to put a bike on the rather short Philadelphia bus bike racks, and I was on a search… Platy is too long. When I do tip the bike, I tip towards me. RobertaSent from my iPadOn Feb 10, 20236, at 9:39 PM, dougP  wrote:Wow! That’s a lovely ride, small gravel for 5 miles over Forbidden Drive (forbidden 
to cars) then MUP to Kelly Drive. 

I suggest from Kelly Drive, right turn at Falls Bridge over the Schuylkill, 
left at  MLK drive then car-free road for next four miles to the Art Museum. 
Then have your GPS to the Convention center.   John’s ride is also a really 
nice 15 miles.

Truth be told, I never would have been able to tell you if there was a lug down 
there until I looked yesterday.

Another quickie. The Nitto racks are beautiful but heavy. I have one of the 
Axiom racks and it is matte silver rather than beautiful shiny but a much 
lighter.   

I’m SO excited for you  Mine in two weeks. We will WOW them when bikers see 
a Platy pod coming towards them when we go for a ride together.

 By tradition, we can assume that many of these weights are wishful 
 thinking - maybe many of the measurements, too. Some of them are clearly 
 wrong; how can the 700x44 Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass tires possibly weigh 
 less than the 700x38 Barlow Pass ones, unless the casings on the 700x44s 
 are sidewall-bursting thin? And weightwise, the SOMA Supple Vitesse SLs 
 are just crazy light, if those numbers are real.
 
 A nice-riding, fairly durable 700x30-something tire (if you can find them) 
 is the SOMA New Express, which has the Panaracer Pasela tread with a more 
 flexible casing. This was originally a 700c tire, which SOMA discontinued 
 when they introduced the Supple Vitesse on the lighter end and the Shikoro 
 on the heavier end. I rode a pair of folding New Expresses in 700x35 for a 
 year or so on my around-town bike, and really liked them; I'd buy them 
 again if they were still available.

 there's a wide shoulder and you pass nice homes and some beach clubs. At 
 Long Branch Rt. 36 turns into a four-lane highway (Ocean Blvd), so I've 
 turned onto side streets from there to get to the train station. A ride 
 along Ocean Ave (not Blvd) and on the promenade at this time of year (no 
 crowds) would be very nice, as it's obviously right along the ocean.
 
 To give you an idea of what some of the route is like, the photos in the 
 below link are from a ride where I took the train from Linden to 
 Aberdeen/Matawan, rode east along the HHT, turned right after the bridge 
 (bypassed Sandy Hook that time), rode down Rt. 36 and hit the beach at 
 Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch to go for a swim before

Do I really want my new bike to be a platypus???  The other option is just as 
bad.

I knew and gave her some of this info but not all of it. I’ll forward your 
message to her. 

Her bike is a cheap ill fitting step through, with barely enough room to get 
her leg through the low top tube (very short effective TT).   The seat post was 
nearly slammed. Leah and I had her raise it and get the saddle set at a better 
angle. She did get to ride Leah’s Clem H and after going just 25’ remarked how 
much nicer it was. She did have sticker shock when we told her she could get a 
good deal on a used Clem L. 

Well, to be honest, it took me some time to get over the investment $$ also. 
I’m ever so glad I did!

I hope you son is ok!  Not a time to get a nail in a foot. 

The name of the thread is “30 days of biking!” and I’m  interpreting that to 
mean 30 rides in 30 days. Reality is though that I probably get 5 out of 7 
days. Work, weather, fatigue gets in the way.  When I miss a day I try to get 
on two rides within the next day or two to make up for it. 

However, what I have promised myself (and am doing )is “something” every day, 
and that “something “ when not riding  is walking.   So, if for some reason I 
don’t get on my bike one day, I will be taking a longer than usual walk. Some 
lucky days I get both. 

It’s 53* out now and my Joe Appaloosa is calling to me.

I started with an idea that the dowel should be about 1 1/2" wider than the 
outside distance of my straps.  They cannot move too much to either side, 
since the "other' strap has a stopping point with the zip tie.So, I 
said to my brother-in-law, "about this long, please."  Until tonight I 
didn't know actually how long he made it, but this works for my fairly 
smooth rides.  If one rides more aggressively or the bike and bag jostles a 
bit when riding, oversized washers on the end would work.  The dowel cannot 
be too long, or else you'd have a hard time slipping the loops off.

I'm not an engineer, but I live in the city and was getting really tired of 
threading my straps thru every time I took off my bag.  And, they are 
harder to thread when there's springs to contend with.

This has worked well for me for the last month or two that I've been riding 
with this set up.  

BTW, the bag is sitting on a rack, but I think this would work well without 
a rack too, but I'd definitely put a "stopping" device on the ends if I 
didn't have a rack.

Actually, I was going to do an oversized washer, but found just having a 
long enough dowel works.  I do think if you rides with more movement than I 
do, it would be a good idea (I don't know anything about rare earth 
magnets).

I LOVE your new blue Clem, even if the name isn't as good as 
Clementine! (Let that be our biggest issue of the day! )  You were wise to 
not let me pick it up in NY and ship it to you, because it might not have 
made it out of PA.  :)  Blue is my favorite color and I couldn't believe 
how beautiful "Rivendell blue" is.   I got to see it in person at the Phila 
Bike Expo.Everyone should take note, since so many of Riv's bikes are 
"Rivendell blue."  And all those other shades of rich blue in the panniers 
and other bags, and your shirts make it even better. 

As you know, I'm so glad it's making you so happy.  Especially nice when 
that was so unexpected.

Rivendell sold out of these bikes within a month of getting them.  Does 
anyone know if they are planning to get more completes?  More frames?  I'm 
not talking about a reinvented version, but the same version and same 
colors that they just need to order (I know it's not that simple) and keep 
in stock until that batch is sold out.  It is an extremely popular model 
and unlike any of their other offerings.

Leah,

I cannot believe how BEAUTIFUL that color is.  So rich and the Riv website 
does not do it justice.  I noticed that when I saw the Cheviot in person 
last week.  For those looking at the Chev, Rivendell told me that the Chev 
and this Clem are the same color in blue.  

I also like the svelteness of this bike, compared to the original Clem.  
When I shopped originally for my first (and, I thought, "only" Riv), I had 
rejected the Clem because of the weight and heft.  However, this will be on 
my potential retirement bike and I'm looking forward to test riding it.  :)

Now that it's not in the triple digit temperature, you'll be able to ride 
nearly every day until summer.  ENJOY  You'll have to get another 
matching shirt for when it warms up!  :)

There was an A Homer Hilsen, Cheviot, and a double top tube Atlantis in the 
booth, with awesome Will and Vince, and the booth seemed to have good traffic. 
I took a few pics and will get them posted in a day or two.  Got to meet Andy 
from Pittsburgh, and Melanie.  I was looking for John (the Riv guys said they 
saw him) but didn't catch up.  Perhaps next year we should all just meet at the 
food truck at noon.

Perhaps you'll be able to come down next year.  The show gets bigger every year.

Fantastic.  Please excuse this if you already know...

Amtrak arrives at 30th Street Station.  To get to the convention center, 
exit out of the east exit towards downtown (The exit might be called 29th 
Street) and walk (or ride your bikes) down JFK or Market Street (use Market 
Street for bikes, as it won't turn into a one way, in the wrong direction) 
until you get to Broad Street (if Broad had a number, it would be 14th 
Street).  It's about a mile.  The convention center entrance might be a 
block or to to the north, on Broad.

Or take a local commuter train (not the subway) one stop east to Suburban 
Station and walk two more blocks east to Convention Center.  These inter 
city stops are usually free.  Or Uber/Taxi.

[RBW] Philadelphia Bike Expo Nov 2 and 3. Rivendell to exibit

Rivendell will be there this year.  I only went once, and it was so much 
fun.

I'll also be there both days with my CL-find vintage Rivendell cap.  (I'll 
post pic later).  If anyone needs anything in Philadelphia, just PM me (I 
live within walking distance to the convention center.)  Perhaps we can get 
a group together to go to Chinatown (a few blocks away) for dinner.  For 
lunch, a great option is the Reading Terminal Market (a couple blocks away).

For those coming in via train, you can get off either at Suburban station 
or at Jefferson station.  The convention center spans many city blocks and 
when I went last, the entrance was off of Broad Street, the most western 
entrance.

This is the reason that I didn't buy a Honda Civic Hybrid.  I ended up with 
a VW Jetta Hybrid, whose batteries form a shelf behind the back seat, but 
the seat does fold down and the opening is tall enough to put the bike 
through.

With the wheel, I actually liked the look with the red bag you had 
originally on it (and that is from someone with all black bags).  To me it 
says "I'm accessorizing with red."

Jared,

I looked for a mixte and it came down to Brooklyn that Joe Bernard 
recommended,  and Handsome Cycles. I think Linus and Public also makes 
them.   

I liked the Brooklyn because was a REAL step thru (not a trip thru, as in 
raise your foot enough when you step thru or else you'll trip). The 
Handsome She Devil is a lighter bike but a "trip thru."Handsome 
She-Devil is more expensive  than the Brooklyn, but if you want to build it 
up, you can buy frame only.  You also can get it painted any color she'd 
like if she doesn't like their colors.  The Brooklyn bikes already come in 
some very cool colors.

How long do tires last?  Is it the number of miles (and how many), the age, 
environmental, a combination?  Would these tires last longer I suppose, 
because the material is thicker (assuming all material is exactly equal, 
which probably isn't true).

I know nothing of tires, but am curious.  I'm a "no flat" kind of person.

Hi, Eric.  

Roberta from Philadelphia here, owner of your Wald basket giveaway (thank 
you).  We met in Rittenhouse Square.  Congratulations on your new 
adventure. 

Personally, I love riding a pretty bike and would be sad riding anything 
less.  You know how ugly most of the commuter bikes here are.  You couldn't 
uglify a Riv enough.

You didn't ask about locks, but I'll throw that idea out--use excellent 
locks, one or two frame/back wheel to rack and one front wheel to frame.  
Many of these better locks come with enough insurance to cover the bike if 
you register the lock and it gets stolen (I just got a NY standard lock, 
just one step down from their best Kryptonite, as a third lock to my good 
Arbus ones).  Big negative is weight.  Then use the the other ideas above.

For 25 years, I locked my Specialized Hardrock in Philly with this two lock 
method and still had it to sell to help finance my Riv.  Granted,  not as 
desirable as a Riv, but it always looked way better than the other bikes 
locked nearby.

I have some Kenda tires (not sure which ones) on my Joe Appaloosa. I think 
they are 45 wide.  I pump them to 65 ( I think that is the max) and don't 
pump them up again until they get that squishy feeling, then pump them up 
again.  I do like them a touch less than the max, but much more than 
squishy.  I'm not sure what pressure that is.  Still fairly firm though for 
me.

I'm trying to figure the best place to park--at the ride start or at Mohonk 
preserve and meet you at the campground.  

I usually ride up to 20 miles on flat ground at 10-11 mph (I can go longer 
on flat ground.) , so am not a strong rider.  I have a hard time on steep 
hills.  I don't know how to interpret the elevation information. Is this 
very steep?  Or, is it just unrelenting and, therefore, tiring.  Google 
says it's a 59 minute ride, which concerns me for a 6 mile stretch.  Please 
don't overestimate my ability (or age)  when responding. (Kai- can drop you 
off anywhere you want.)

[RBW] Re: Recommendations on cycling to Rivendell and around San Francisco and the Bay Area

Hi, Ana.

I had a great time on my trip, thanks to the recommendation of the good 
folks here on one of your links above.  There is so much to do, and you're 
lucky you have more time.  My time was limited to 2-1/2 days and one full 
day.  I'll be back though.

Cross the Golden Gate Bridge.  I walked it, but if you ride it, you can go 
farther.  Loved the walk and the views, but it's quite windy.  I also 
visited the Japanese Garden in Golden Gate Park (I think that was the 
name).  Very lovely.  My most fun time was going on a bike tour of San 
Francisco.  I don't remember the company name, but you can ride your own 
bike; I rented one.  I was the only one signed up and they required a 
minimum of two riders, so I paid for an invisible 2nd person and got a 
private tour with an ex-history teacher as the ride leader.  They know how 
to zigzag around the really steep hills.  Got to see lots of neighborhoods, 
views and history of SF.  I visited Rivendell.   I did more, but I cannot 
remember specifics.   I wanted to do so much more, but didn't have the time.

Probably 30 years ago, I visited and went to Muir Woods and Chinatown.

If you're a museum person, be sure to find out the days they are closed.  

I was without a bike.  I stayed at a hotel in Oakland--Hilton? 
Hampton Inn?-- (SO much less expensive than SF) and took the free city bus 
to and from the train station each day and then trained into SF.  However, 
there are lots of bikes there, so you could ride your bike to the station, 
if you're OK locking it there. I don't know the rules for bringing a bike 
on the train.  That line is really convenient and can take you to/from the 
airport and to/from Rivendell.

7:34 at Mahwah station would be perfect if you want to go with 
me.You'll be longer on the train, shorter in the car.  The Garden State 
Parkway is closer to NY, so you'll be shorter on the train, longer in the 
car.

You  have 10 more days to decide and look for a NY ride.  If you want to go 
with me, just send me a PM and we'll coordinate off line.  At least you 
know you have a ride, even if you do need to get up middle of the night to 
start the trip!  :)

Not real close, but I'm leaving from Morris County 7-7:30 am, coming back 
that evening.  There is a Lakeland bus to Parsippany and a train (NJ 
transit, perhaps?) that runs to Denville, both fairly close for me to pick 
you up.  I'll be driving up I287 to I87, so if you find a train that takes 
you along my route (Franklin Lakes or  Mahwah, perhaps?), I can pick you up 
there, also.  Offer is open to Kai or anyone else. 

It it's raining, I'll probably still go up, but I won't be biking.

I'm in downtown Philadelphia (called Center City, if you're familiar), just 
south of Rittenhouse Square.  They are in Fishtown.

They are 3 miles from my house, along one of my standard rides.  I've heard 
so much about them, but with the dozen or more bike shops within walking 
distance from my house, I've never stopped by their store, although they 
are on my list for a visit.  From what I've heard, they are the most 
Riv-ish shops in town, but I am lucky enough to have found a mechanic at 
another shop who is very Riv-ish.

I think you are probably right, as it doesn't feel like a glass and silver 
mirror.  Probably why it is so light.   Are the silver stickers 
replaceable?  I got a replacement mirror from a fabulous forum member, but 
it might go bad in a few years.

You can see the pits best in Erl's picture and what I see in the mirror 
when riding on my pic.

Mine looks similar but worse. You can especially see the marks in the 
reflection on my hand and on the white sheet. Looking directly, they are hard

Congratulations on the clementine L!   It looks like a most awesome bike and 
nearly everyone who has one loves it. 

For the pitting, imagine pin marks (pricks) all over mirror. The mirror is 
silver and the pricks are dark grey, the same color as the road, so makes it 
harder to see. I’ll be home later and will post a pic. 

Perhaps I live in a more polluted area (scary). Maybe I should move to Atlanta, 
where everyone is nice. 

[RBW] Pitted German mirror and possible WTB the mirror

My Rivendell German mirror https://www.rivbike.com/products/german-mirror is 
very pitted, making it hard to view what's behind me.  I've had it on my 
bike for two years and its always stored inside and kept dry.

Is this normal?  

If it's an anomaly, does anyone have just a mirror (it looks like I can 
just pop out the current mirror and pop in another) or the mirror with its 
housing that they'd want to sell?  I don't need the attachment to the bike 
part, but I'd buy it too, if that's the only way.

[RBW] Re: Cotton tape on top of Meisha's cork grips--good idea or not?

I tried these gloves that Garth suggested

great.  The palm side is slightly textured, similar to suede.  No slipping 
and I didn't feel additional heat build up. And, they covered up most of my 
hand.  They are also easier to get off than cycling gloves I used to own.

You both are so right!  I thought my Dia-Compe Cages were secure (they 
are!), but these King Iris ones are unbelievable!  I had to wrestle my 
water bottles from their new cages last night.

The Dia-compe ones are slightly sleeker looking, and the King Iris are 
slightly heftier looking (but they are not that different from each other), 
so I'll be putting the King Iris on my Joe A and The Dia-Compe ones on my 
A. Homer Hilsen.   I think anyone would be happy with either, should one be 
sold out and the other available.   The lovely iris shape is similar.

How are you liking the sprung saddle on the Clemintine?  I know your Betz 
doesn't have one with springs.

My Joe A went from fabulous to super fabulous when I changed my B17 to a 
sprung Flyer (the top is the same).   I don't hear it squeak any longer (it 
still squeaks sometimes, but I just don't notice it).

I LOVE the color of your Clementine and am so happy for you loving that 
bike.  It must be really super fantastic to already have you make up your 
mind that it gets top billing, above Betz, something I never thought would 
happen, you love it so much.

The grey and the green bags are nice, but the blue has personality, like 
you!I suggest that one (BTW, if I didn't already have a bag for my AHH, 
it would be a blue one).  

Also, (this was going to be a surprise, but since you're talking about 
putting patches on your bags), yesterday afternoon I ordered both NE and 
West Coast 25th Riv Anniversary ride patches for you and me.  They're 
coming from two different locations, so I had them sent to me.  I'd then 
pack them up and send them to you.

[RBW] Dia-Compe or King Iris Water Bottle Cage? (or WTB )

I procured an AHH a few weeks ago from a fabulous member here, Phil, as a 
lighter option to my beloved Joe Appaloosa.  The bike lives at my office 
for after-work rides and it is the one I plan to travel with in my car or 
on trains.

I like the Dia-compe water bottle cages on my Joe A., and wanted to order 
them for the AHH.  However, they are out of stock at Rivendell.  It's not a 
problem to wait (I have other options), but I was wondering how different 
(or not) they were from the King Iris cages.  It looks like the Dia-compe 
is taller, and I only use tall water bottles.  Would that make a 
difference?  Dia-Compe looks sleeker, but would I even notice that on a 
seat tube?

I'm also willing to buy one cage from a member here.

One pic of your bike is not turned.  Did you hold your phone differently 
(portrait vs landscape) when taking that pic vs the others? I've had that issue 
too on my phone, so I download, review, and rotate on my PC, if needed.  I 
don't have an iPad, so don't know if it works differently on that hardware.

now I need pedals.  These $22 Clem Smith pedals,

would be perfect if they came in grey or silver.  I ride in sneakers.

Does anyone have similar inexpensive (but not cheaply made) thin grey or 
sliver pedals with reflectors that you want to sell?  They should be 
mechanically good, but doesn't matter if they are visually not perfect 
(they are pedals, after all).  If not, I'll order the Riv ones this Friday, 
June 7.  Other than esthetics, they are just what I'm looking for and if no 
one has anything I'll buy these and will be perfectly happy with them.

I'm not looking to spend more than $30 including freight and they need to 
get to Philadelphia 19154 by June 14.  I'll be getting the bike on June 15 
and Phil has graciously offered to install them for me.

I'd slather on the sunscreen, just to have it wear off way too soon.  So, I 
picked these at the store up in a Large because I don't like tight fitting 
garments:

They are loose enough (just the size of my arms) to not be constricting and 
I do not feel hot in them (although, it's rarely been in the 80's here 
yet).  Notice that on the closeup pic, the inside lower arm is mesh for 
ventilation.  They are quite long, with the tops coming to near my armpits 
and the bottom  well covering the bone at my wrist.  At the top, the 
Bontrager name on the black band has a self stick rubber like substance so 
it does not slip down.  I also like it that they are cut for bent arm 
position.  One person I met told me to wet them  during a ride to keep 
cooler, but I haven't tried that yet.  They are washable, but I haven't 
needed to wash them yet.

I'm quite happy with this purchase and wish I did it long ago.  For my neck 
and décolletage, I wear two Riv bandanas, one tied in front with the 
triangle in the back to protect my neck, the other tied in the back to 
protect the front.  I might be next buying a crew neck shirt, so that I 
won't need the bandana for the front, just for the neck.  Or, a 
collard shirt, like Deacon Patrick uses, but will still need one Riv 
bandana for décolletage protection.

Right now, I'm using sunscreen for just my hands (until I buy the gloves), 
face and knees, but if you have a suggestion for a non scented, chem-free 
one, I'll try it.  I'm using Alba Botanica Sport Sunscreen SPF 45 fragrance 
free.  It's not quite fragrance free, but it is fairly so and the scent is 
very neutral and wears off in a minute or so.

So sorry about the shop closing.  So many quality oriented businesses and 
products are going away in favor of cheap (and I don't mean just inexpensive).  
I hope you continue on the boards and let us know what you'll be doing.  You 
seem an upstanding guy, like Grant (Rivendell) and a few other Riv dealers I've 
met (James/Analog) or spoken with (Joe/718 Cyclery).  The inventory practices 
of the industry is a killer for small shops.

I have that same bike (year 2016) but in smaller size, single top tube and 650b 
tires.  If it fits you and you haven't ridden one yet, you will be in for a 
treat!  It's an awesome riding bike.

I'll be trying gloves, first those fishing gloves that Garth pointed me to, 
since they have the added bonus of sun protection.  I bought arm sun sleeves 
last month so that I could stop needing sunscreen on my arms, but still needed 
to put it in the back of my hands. 

If they don't work, I'll try the other glove suggestions.

Jeff, that’s a huge concern of mine too. The shape is so ergonomic and we 
cannot get them any longer.  I’m nervous about recking a good thing (except 
when they are wet).

[RBW] Cotton tape on top of Meisha's cork grips--good idea or not?

I didn't want to hijack the Newbaum's new padded tape topic, so I started this 
one.

I have older Meisha cork grips, scallaced --the ones with the bulge about 2/3 
from the bar end.  One issue I have with it is that in the summer when my hands 
sweat, and it's hard to keep a grip.

Do you think that putting either the new padded tape or the standard tape wound 
work with slippage (and perhaps padding)?  I don't want to ruin the cork grips 
with the sticky stuff on the back of the tape, so I was thinking about first 
wrapping the grips with blue painters tape.  I'd probably remove the tape after 
summer, because I like the look of the cork.

What do you think?   Or should I just buy summer riding gloves?

Congratulations on your first Riv.  My first (and only) Riv purchase was 
just over two years ago and also an Appaloosa, but in butterscotch, not the 
wonderful, watery blue of yours.  You're right about it allowing one to 
just enjoy the ride and the scenery.

Interesting.  Would be even better to place marks at "1-ft, 2ft, 3 ft--It's 
the LAW" So that the drivers can see it the .   Actually, in PA, where I 
live, it might be 4 feet.  Heck, even a yoga mat mounted like that might 
deter drivers from trying to pass within inches (or a foot).

I ride, walk, and drive, and try to be nice to other modal types around.  I 
don't like it if a car is behind me, even if he keeps his distance.  And, 
especially if he is considerate, at each intersection (every 1/10th mile, 
as I live in a city), I'll have room to ride to the side and wave him 
by.

However, I read something in "Just Ride" that I do do sometimes and when I 
read it, I thought "I could never do that; its so not nice."  Grant 
suggests (and I'm paraphrasing from reading this 2 years ago) that if there 
is a danger behind you, rather than sticking to the right and hoping he'll 
leave you alone and not try to pass within inches, take the entire lane and 
ride "crazy."  He will back off.  Well, I sometimes do take the lane (legal 
where I am), but don't ride crazy.  But the point is for the car behind me 
to back off, because now he cannot even pass.  I actually signal "one 
moment" with my pointer finger, and let him pass when I'm at next 
intersection.  Then I wave a wave of thanks, a la Deacon Patrick and 
others.  

I still do most of my riding on the bike paths, just so I can keep away 
from the cars and not need to stop every 1/10th of a mile at each 
intersection.

In case your plans are flexible and these might appeal to you:

I was at Valley of Fire two years ago with the wrong shoes.  You'll be 
hiking in red sand that once was part of the mountain.  I  recommend high 
top hiking boots to keep the sand out of your shoes.
Death Valley.  Bring a paper map.  You lose cell connection partway between 
LV and Death Valley.
Mob Museum.  VERY interesting (history of how LV came to be), more than I 
thought it would be.
Hoover Dam.  Take the longest tour you can.  Awesome. 
Red Rock Canyon.  Lots of good hikes, from easy to difficult.

I'm not an accountant and this is not accounting advice...  Perhaps there 
is a CA accountant here.  I work with accounting software, so it's not an 
unfamiliar topic to me and I'm not an expert, but then again, I'm not an 
accountant and this is not accounting advice...  :)

My understanding is that it is the delivery location and nexus (does the 
business has a presence in the delivery state?)  that determines the sales 
tax.  

I'll probably fly in, enjoy the party (hopefully we'd have one) and then 
have the bike sent to PA.  Or I'd buy it from the "sort of local" RIV 
dealer, 718 Cyclery, save the shipping but pay NY tax instead.  We could do 
a day trip from LV--it would be a short and I think inexpensive flight.  9 
hour car trip is a LONG trip.  But, you think you'd be able to tear 
yourself away from your new baby to save $500?  I bet you could get them to 
ship your bike out right after you leave, so you wouldn't need to wait to 
long for the reunion.

No matter what you decide, it will be FUN, I'm sure!

First, congratulations on the new ride.  The Saluki and the AHH are 
supposed to ride the same, but have a better name?  Is that right?

from the board and see your Saluki in person.

If you purchase your bike or take delivery physically in ca you will need to 
pay sales tax. If you order it online and you have it ship to you, you will 
only pay sales tax if they have an employee in NV. 

I cannot imagine  you seeing and riding it in CA and not taking it with you 
when you’d leave!  You’d have Mixte withdrawal symptoms for a week until it 
shows up in NV

I’d probably fly in to make my purchase decision and it would be so cool to go 
on rides with others from the board!!  They would all come out to visit 
with you.

Wow, thank you!

I thought the Dyno setup would be pounds, not just an ounce, heavier.  I 
just weighed my USB headlight and it is 2.8 oz on the postal scale.

I don't ride too much in the dark these days, but I do it as it gets dark 
to the end of my ride.  I currently use USB rechargeables. I remember in 
college having a light generator that looked like an old soda bottle.  I 
flipped it down for contact on the wheel to generate the light.  I did like 
that, because in college I rode in the dark a lot.

How much weight do dyno lights add?  I'm already struggling with the weight 
of my Appaloosa with accessories when I need to lift and carry it.

I have had a few people recognize it and comment "nice Riv," but I agree, 
from a marketing perspective.  

On one group ride, someone was admiring my bike saying how lovely it was 
and how much thought I must have put into each  detail  (the "thought" 
would have come from Rivendell and James from Analogue Cycles; the only 
thing I choose was the color of the bar tape).  He then said, 
""Appaloosa???  I never heard of that company.  Good thing it isn't a 
Rivendell, because that would have made it more expensive."

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

I have two dual shackle u locks from Arbus--big and bigger (meaning heavy 
and heavier).  The plan is to use heavier one to lock bike and one wheel to 
fixed object and the other wheel to bike frame or fixed object.  Theives 
would have to make four cuts to steal bike (or just two if they wanted to 
carry it away). In reality, I'm so nervous about my Riv being stolen in the 
city, that I don't ride it if I need to lock it.  I'd be ok with my setup 
if I were to lock it in suburbs.

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

Hi Sean.
I took off my selle anatomica non slotted saddle to try one of their 
slotted ones (that I recently got from another poster because I was curious 
about slotted saddles).  So, the non slotted one is just sitting in a box.  
If you would like to borrow it to check it out for the longer rails, just 
pm me and I'd be happy to loan it to you for a week or two, as long as you 
pay shipping.  It's nearly new.  I want to ride more on the slotted one 
before I decide which to keep on the bike.
