Re: [RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-16 Thread Roger Morrison
Patrick, yes it is a first generation Cyclone GT(with matching front
derailleur). The frame is big, at 68cm. I bought the frameset a few months
ago, and built it up mostly with stuff that I had on hand. It is a good
riding bike, but a little on the heavy side.

Other notable parts:
Shimano 7402 shifters(set to friction mode)
Shimano BR70 brakes
Nitto dirt drop bars
Sugino AT crankset minus the small ring
B17 saddle
Deore seatpost
STX wheelset from a Trek 520
38mm Gravelkings
Nitto M12 rack
Swift Industries bags

Probably a couple other things that I am forgetting..

Looks like there might have been a run on alcohol fuels (except the O’Reilly

Berkeley REI, El Cerrito Big 5, and the local hardware stores all had their
shelves cleared for some time, but I was just told on the phone that at REI
Crown is in stock again.

[RBW] Re: Tinting clear Shellac

2019-04-18 Thread Roger
The first time I shellacked bar tape, I stopped by Riv (probably when they
were upstairs at the old address) and I believe it was Joe Bauder squeezed
a small amount of liquid dye for me out of a plastic bottle to darken the
shellac. It may have been an ounce or less of dye, and I don't remember
exactly what it was, but it mixed in easily. A hardware store may be able
to help with some dye.

I added a note that Appaloosa was first available in March of 2016.

I think Appaloosa was, like the various iterations of the name Roscoe
Bubbe/Boscoe Rubbe, a name that was floating around for awhile waiting to
be paired with a bike concept that was going to move forward into
production. The original use of the name in print predated its use as what
we now know as Appaloosa by several years.

Howdy,

As my title say's I'm looking for a set of 26x2.3 tires. I have a 1995 18"
Salsa Ala Carte and I have 26x2.1 Thunder Burt's mounted currently but I'd
like to try squeezing in a 2.4 tire. I'm selling it potentially to a friend

this is an experiment. I'll obviously pay for shipping.

How hot is too hot?

Tim : Jul 17 06:50AM -0700

The 5 day forecast here in KC is for mid to upper 90s (94 being the "coolest"
high temp, 98 being the hottest) with lows of mid to upper 70s, sunny, 50-60%
humidity and zero chance of rain. Light winds for this area, always out of the
SW. Kansas City Ultra Cycling has moved the start time for Friday's Belgium Day
100K ride from 9:00 am to 6:30 am to beat some of the heat.

Personally, there are zero days per year that I consider too hot to ride. I
sweat like crazy and I seem to hold up to the heat very well, although my
fitness is not where I'd like and I need to lose weight, so I may not ride the
Belgian ride, but I'll be on my bike every day, with rides between 15 and at
least 50 miles. I am, admittedly short on common sense, though.

Anyway, I know it's hot everywhere so how about you guys? I know Riv's don't
melt because HQ is over 100 degrees quite often. Stay hydrated out there! I'm
going shopping online for an asbestos chamois!

EasyRider : Jul 17 09:23AM -0700

Here in D.C., we're into our second week of mid-90s with high humidity, so
the heat index has climbed to 100 a few times ... it was 106 last Thursday.
100 is about where I draw the line. Combined with air pollution, a 15 mile
round trip commute downtown in those conditions becomes rather unpleasant,
and probably unhealthy.

A lot depends on where you ride, and specifically on how much shade
there is. I led a ride on that same Thursday in the Brandywine MD area,
and I found it actually pretty comfortable and pleasant most of the
time, except for the two flat tires I had. Here's the route:

2017-03-10 Thread Roger
For models built in batches the logic is clear, but Ive wondered about this, for
small and large Atlantis, Hillborne, or other frames built on individual order,
not batches, what about being small or large would make them be discontinued?
Are there different tubes or lugs that would need to be held in inventory just
for those sizes?

Aargh!
I've been working on my French press caldera setup and forgot coffee
outside was this morning!
And it was just a wonderful 5 miles on the Bay Trail, too!
It was in the back of my mind, but my memory twisted and remembered it as
wanting to go photograph the early spring waterfowl along the waterfront.
Double aargh, is next Saturday at Marina Bay as well?

[RBW] Re: 2 things: 1: ISO/WTT for fixed gear lockring; 2: How to fix wood chain guard?

2015-09-16 Thread Roger Blake
Cauls are shaped wood pieces, in this case curved to suite the shape of the
chain guard. They go between the steel clamp(s) and the chain guard. They
distribute the forces of the the clamp and protect the chain guard from
being dented by the clamp. Done in this way, the repair will be stronger at
the glue line than it was originally. If it breaks again it will be
somewhere else.

Did you ever try using the Klean Kanteen for boiling? It can be a tippy

What's been your experience?

[RBW] Camera Bag companion for ShopSack / Wald Basket

2015-03-01 Thread Roger
Recently, I've been working on my camera skills in conjunction with
investing in new camera gear (Olympus EM10 with several native and adaped
lenses), and have been looking for a good way to carry an outing's worth of
equipment along in a secure fashion.

Camera bags are great, but bag inserts are a nice way to go if you already
have a main bag you like and just want a camera bag to fit inside.

The Timbuk2 Snoop Insert
http://www.timbuk2.com/snoop-camera-insert/869.html?dwvar_869_size=3dwvar_869_color=2076mkwid=sL8s6jPW1pkw=timbuk2%20snoop%20insertpcrid=48320977024pdv=cgclid=CMLMyZn4h8QCFYiVfgodQg0AUw

is a nice way to go, if you already have a messenger bag. You can buy the
same size insert as your bag to completely fill the main compartment, or
you can get the insert that is one size down to still have some room left
for other things.I have a Small insert in a Medium bag, and it holds most
all of my gear.

The Shopsack / Wald basket combo is perhaps the most perfect bike
accessory. It is the best commute and errand running setup I've used, and
what I really wanted was an insert to work with the ShopSack.

A Camaroo insert is a nice, smaller bag insert. I have the Express Insert
https://www.flickr.com/photos/56856126@N02/sets/72157651041432016/with/16498118769/for

Micro Four Third / Mirrorless Camera, which snuggles nicely into a Medium
Shopsack. I like it for on the bike. I can access my gear while straddling
the bike and keeping anything from moving around on me. It's also really
good for when you pull the Shopsack off the bike and carry it ... wherever
you are headed. My bag is about 8.5 x 6 x 4 and holds the camera, up to 4
lenses, and various things. It takes up less than half of the zippable
capacity of the Medium Shopsack, leaving space for your tools, personables
and sweater.

[RBW] Re: Klean Kanteen Conversion Questons

2015-02-28 Thread Roger
Klean Kanteens are very versatile and durable. My wife and I use them
daily, in several ways:

   - drinking water around the house in uninsulated bottles
   - keeping coffee hot for hours, poured fresh out of the French Press
   - holding tea for sipping slowly over an hour's time

In addition, I use the pair of an insulated and uninsulated for making
coffee while on a ride or camping. I made a caldera-style stove for using
the uninsulated as a kettle, and make the coffee, Russ Roca style, in the
insulated bottle.

There are a few pictures showing the setup and how everything (except the
Trangia stove puck) stores away in the two bottle cages here

They're all really nice people on the phone at Rivendell.

I weight 250# and have put camping loads onto my 62cm Sam and liked the way
it rode very well. With the 38-42 size tires the Sam was optimized for

carried well for me on hardpack off road surfaces, like I imagine your

The reach on the Hunq is actually closer than my other bikes (Waterford

My other Riv'endells all have higher SO heights with longer reaches

variance in these top tube lengths is somewhat meaningless since the head
tube angles are different on all of the bikes mentioned. My Roadeo has a
73 degree Head tube angle (same as my, Map, Rex, and Waterford which all

2014-11-24 Thread Roger
I can definitely taste how paper strips the oils and bass notes out of the
types of coffee I roast (Jjavas, Yemens, East africans, etc). Lighter bodied,
brighter coffees may be less affected.

As for plastic, it's not rational it just gives me the heeby jeebies. Not sure
if I taste it. It does remind me of improvised roasting with popcorn poppers
where the plastic lid would soften, deform and ultimately form plastic
stalactites over the roasting bans.

[RBW] Yet _even more_ travel coffee questions!

2014-11-23 Thread Roger

*coffee* questions!
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#%21searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/coffee/rbw-owners-bunch/lGetc-8p6XI/ab4n60B2PwAJ,

it seems the Helix Coffee Dripper
http://store.oceanaircycles.com/products/helix-coffee-dripper sold by
Ocean Air and others is coming onto the scene. Do any of us here have much
experience with it that they could share?

For myself, I don't put paper or plastic into the path of my hot coffee, so
it would take a metal travel filter to make this filter holder happen, but
maybe that's available ... or tinker-able (!) Still, except for the paper,
I'm very intrigued by this elegant solution.

As I was waiting for a riding companion to get his issue dealt with, I
listened to a young, fit employee who was apparently selling one of those
carbon bikes to an older guy, maybe in his 50s. The customer was a tall
fellow with a substantial beer keg of a belly, and judging by the
conversation he was a new rider.

The employee was earnestly telling him that he really needed to use
padded bike shorts, and they had to be tight. The employee further
explained that the only bike shorts that were truly appropriate were bib
shorts, and the bib shorts should be so tight that it would be
uncomfortable to stand upright in them, but that would be all right because
with the low handlebars and the low riding position, the bibs would work.
The bike shop guy's attitude about the bibs was about the same as my and
your attitude about, say, carrying a patch kit when riding: they were
 utterly necessary.

It was unclear to me how the rider would be able to ride those low
 handlebars, given his round belly.

 I didn't say a word.

[RBW] Marin Camping on Entmoot's Eve (Friday Night)

2014-06-20 Thread Roger

Twas the Night Before Entmoot - or - Howdy Friday Night Campers!

I’m looking to ride up into Marin from San Francisco in the early afternoon
of July 11.

The main China Camp reservation starts on Saturday (thanks Jim!), but I’d
like to camp on Friday Night with others of us attending the Riv Jamboree.
I don’t have a site yet (and they’re scarce) so I’d like to either join up
with any of us who already have a site in the area, or to quickly secure a
site for any of us not yet set. In a quick look, it seems Tomales Bay has
sites, but they’re less easy to find in Southern Marin or Angel’s Camp
itself.

Anyone who either already has or needs a campsite for Friday night – let’s
talk about it.

Still, if any other Friday arrivers are feeling sociable, let's talk about

I would want to participate Friday afternoon through Saturday. I'm not sure how
campsites are shaping up. Is everything already spoken for at China Camp?

[RBW] Re: Garage sale grabs?

2014-06-07 Thread Roger
There were a few beautiful complete bikes: a Betty Foy, robin's egg blue
with red fills, and the recent proto-Hunqa. Both may have found forever
homes today.

I got a single Sprint shifter and used Phil bottom bracket. Just yesterday
I was about to mail order a different shifter and bracket, but these even
more perfectly suited my needs for a bike I'm repurposing for utility
riding.

I also got what I believe was a Baggins handlebar bag from about 10 years
ago which was designed to work with the handlebar bracket I've had waiting
for about...10 years...for a bag. I'd bought just the bracket and meant to
make a bag; another project that didn't ever come to fruition.

I've always wanted a Huret Jubilee shifter, as it's said to have a very
good movement, but moreso because it may be the most beautiful shifter I've
seen. Got one, but don't have an immediate use for it, though.

I didn't buy the can of black beans, but did get some tubes, t shirts, a
wooly sweater, and a blow up pillow.

Good times.

[RBW] WTB: Panniers

2014-05-11 Thread Roger
I'm looking for a nice set of panniers that I'd use with Nitto lowriders.
My first thought is for waxed canvas, and along the lines of Swift or
Carsick. There seem to be a great many good bag makers these days.

I'll mostly use these just for camping, along with a Hoss saddlebag and a
medium ShopSack, so they needn't push the upper edge on capaciousness nor
push the limit on technical features.

The pannier shown in this
photohttps://www.flickr.com/photos/56856126@N02/14165564595/in/set-72157643167142163as
 a reference is a home project bag that measures about 12 x 14 x 8 when
fully stuffed as shown.

Anyone have bags that need a new home?

Re: [RBW] FS: Sam Hillborne - 60cm

2014-04-15 Thread Roger
My wife asked me to let the forum to know she is baffled at this one bike
concept and not in agreement.

She peppered me with questions about how this would work: how would I get
to work if my bike broke down, how would I get exercise, how would I have
the right bike for shopping and a weekend ride?

I told her I had four running bikes and she replied that it seemed like at
minimum five was a decent limit - not that she was counting...

I had this for sale on craiglist in the past and someone on the list

I understand the moustache bar is not a desirable handlebar for some
riders. A dirt drop stem usually goes with the moustache bar If this
is the case, I will sell the bike without the moustache bar for $40 less
and without the moustache bar and dirt drop stem for $100 less.

The Sam Hillborne does not include the rear rack and front and rear light
seen in the pictures. Also, the moustache bar no longer has tape. I
was doing some experimenting with handlebars. I will update the
pictures accordingly if you want to see without.

 Please send me any questions.

[RBW] Re: Sugino XD Single Chainring Bottom Bracket Width.

2014-04-04 Thread Roger
Around 1998, Grant set me up with a Sugino AT and a 115 spindle for use as
a single (remember when Riv used to sell cool old NOS parts?). I believe I
used a 3mm spacer to get clearance where the chainring bolts mount. This
was for use with a 126mm rear hub. I'm not sure if a modern 130/135mm
spacing would need a little more clearance at the crank.

On Friday, April 4, 2014 4:14:33 PM UTC-7, David Banzer wrote:

That's interesting, I happen to have a Sugino AT and a Tange 122.5 bottom
bracket sitting in the parts bin right now. Looks like I'll be able to
setup the Redwood and go for a ride this weekend.

[RBW] Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue

2014-03-30 Thread Roger
I’ve been a Rivendell member since 1997. I’ve outfitted my bikes in
Rivendell-inspired ways with many Riv-bought parts, and during the time
that Rivendell frames only came out at a trickle and there was a year long
waiting list for the Longlow I wanted in 1999, I even used Riv specs as
possible on my Mercians. But I’ve never actually had a Rivendell frame
until now.

On Friday I took out for a first ride the Sam Hillborne 62cm in Sage Green
that I picked up recently. I built it up with parts on hand as possible,
and it came out as Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost
Blue.

Something Old

The first talk I had with Grant in 1997 was about how I just couldn’t
relate to index shifting and 8 speeds – and I was indignant that there was
9 and rumors of 10 speeds about to further complicate my life. He suggested
a Phil 7 speed, 135 oln hub for the bike I had then. I’ve built that hub as
both a 26” and 700c wheel for a few different bikes over the years. It
still rolls very smoothly and, a new 13-28 freewheel cluster, I’m glad to
bring that first bond with Rivendell on board this bike.

Something New

I’ve been told that derailers have improved in the last twenty years, so
have current models of Deore rear and CX-70 front derailers. Sam also has
the long reach Tektro calipers that made him possible as a non-cantilever
bike (not that I wouldn’t have preferred him as a cantilever…). I also am
so far liking the new Barlow tires.

Something Borrowed

I had intended and still may someday use a Sugino AT crank I had squirreled
away, but it turns out a 107mm bottom bracket comes with the Hillborne. In
order to streamline things and utilize this bottom bracket already in
there, I borrowed an old Ritchey Logic crank from the Vigorelli , and
cleaned up 46 and 34 tooth rings for it. Fits perfectly! And will probably
stay until I need some lower gears for a camping trip.

Almost Blue

Yep, it’s just got a nice ring in it to say almost blue. Also, the color
seems equally greenish-blue as bluish-green to me. I’ll call it Almost Blue.

I’ve always liked Moustache Bars and wanted to start off this bike with
this maligned and recently abandoned bar. I’ve found over the years that
when I’m tinkering with bikes, they tend to shed barends, noodles, and
especially albatrosses, in favor of Moustache Bars and DT shifters.
Unfortunately, Sam doesn’t support downtubers, so we’ll see how that works
out.

First ride was 15 miles of positive. I need the bars a little higher/closer
than the stem on hand allows, and I’m not sure about the plethora of cables
to reach through to get to the front bag (even though I like the non-aero
Superbe levers otherwise). I also need to get that saddle back a little
farther.
Good Times!

[RBW] Re: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Almost Blue

2014-03-30 Thread Roger
Thanks for the kind words everyone. The Sam Hillborne is indeed a handsome
bike. I believe I got the last 62cm in this color, with the next batch, in
the standard blue I'm told, not arriving for a little while.

Today I went for a spin with the seat set back a little further and found
it closer to where I usually set the saddle. I like a lot of setback, it
helps me to balance my upper body without putting too much weight on my
hands and arms.

I keep a small carton of milk or half and half in the freezer to take with

It thaws over time, certainly long enough to still have some ice the next
morning, and would surely give it a longer life on longer trips.

Re: [RBW] Re: PDX Sunrise Coffee Club Tomorrow

2013-11-05 Thread Roger
Thanks Paul

Yeah, I just carry the trangia (filled with enough fuel) in whatever bag
I'm using at that moment. Trangia, matches and a baggie of coffee grounds
is all I need to carry that isn't carried on the Klean Kanteen itself.

As for the cone, I find the key is the rivet. Other cones and screens I've
had flounced around like a loose spring until fully set up, but the rivet
holds the cone's shape to only expanding/contracting at the bottom for use
or storage. With nothing more than the rivet and a spoke to hold the
Kanteen the right distance above the Trangia, it is a very stable structure.

I don't really know much about percolating coffee. I pretty much use the
method Russ Roca suggested in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4GTLDBei5w

As an aside, I use two Kanteens, one for boiling and one for
brewing/drinking just because that's what I already carried on the bike.
One could boil and brew in just the uninsulated bottle. One could also just
boil in the bottle and then use the hot water for a different coffee making
system. Or, even tea.

On Monday, November 4, 2013 7:14:56 AM UTC-8, Paul wrote:

That's a really nice looking setup. Do you just carry the trangia with
fuel in it in a separate bag? And are you boiling the water in one kleen
kanteen and then pouring it over the coffee in the H2Jo? Have you tried
 percolating with it?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell BBH visit

2013-11-03 Thread Roger
Open combs like that nice Merkur are nice razors. They shave nice and
close, and don't clog so easily when one hasn't shaved for several days.

For Patrick and others, shaving is a regressive technology (now geared
primarily towards marketing advances) and many believe that unless you want
to go all the way to a straight edge, that the double-edged razor blade is
the next best thing.

Great razor blades can still be bought as cheaply as disposables (10 cents
to 50 cents a blade that will last for perhaps 5 to 10 or more shaves), and
the razors themselves (essentially blade holders) from the 1910s to 1970s
that one finds in antique stores and thrift stores can be as good or better
than those made today.

My two favorite razors are a refurbished Gillette open comb at least 50
years old, and a Merkur Slant razor I bought in an antique shop in Luling
Texas. I think it was made in Germany in the 1930s.

As for blades, each brand is slightly different: some too sharp, some too
dull, some quite stiff, some flexible... I like 7 o'clock most of the time,
but go for the Kai or Feather if I really want to...carefully... shave
really closely.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell BBH visit

2013-11-03 Thread Roger
Ironically, your photo is called The Old but I believe that was a razor
that debuted in 1929 and was named The New

Here's some fun reading:
http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Gillette%20Rasierer.htm

Funnily, the razor that preceded The New was The New Improved.
The easiest way to distinguish The New from previous models is that it
was the first Gillette not to have the two vampire teeth blade centering
pins on the underside of the razor.

To me, The New was the pinnacle of Gillette technology, better than the
very aggressive razors that came before it and better than all the later
solid bar (i.e. not open comb) razors of later decades.

[RBW] Re: Supplier of quality waxed canvas?

2013-09-29 Thread Roger
I looked into buying some #8 Martexin Original Wax from them recently. But
after paying the $21 for one yard, there would then be a minimum $30 small
order handling charge. Plus, I haven't made the phone call, but it's not
clear they will sell less than 5 yards.

Fairfield is set up as a wholesale suppplier, which is great, but at least
my humble Google-Fu skills have not turned up any small volume retailer of
wax duck who is set up to serve the hobbyist.
Seems like Martexin cotton duck would be perfect for a cottage industry to
offer in small amounts, or as a group buy.

You know, the findings in that study are interesting (though I concede I've
not read the actual study yet). Living in the state with the oldest
population, I treat a lot of older cyclists. Many of the men have a variety
of hip and/or balance issues which make mounting/dismounting their bikes
difficult and a touch risky. I've suggested a step-through frame to several
of them and am consistently met with I am not going to ride a girl's
bike! Ah well. . . I can say that, after having ridden my wife's Betty, I
want one just 'cause they're delightful bikes.

 the
case, I'd love to see what innovative things you've made. In the
 meantime,
I'll post some images of things that I've made.

During the past 2 years, I have been trying to perfect the rando bag but
ultimately have been displeased with its lack of sturdiness. I enjoy
 making
them, using them for a while, then gifting them to other cycling
friends--this is great because it constantly gives me the opportunity to
make new bags. While rando bags look great, I have yet to make one as
versatile as a Wald basket. And after many years of debate, I have
 decided
to stick with my Wald. With that in mind, I missed the tool pockets
typically found at the back of a rando bag. So, I recently decided to
create a couple of pouches to hang on the back side of my basket.

Both pouches are 2 inches deep, 4 inches wide, and 5 inches high. There
 is
also an extra 3 inches of flap available if I try to over-stuff the
pouches. It was relatively easy to construct these little bags because
canvas is such a forgiving material to work with. I have plastic
 stiffeners
inside the bags (very similar to the ones in Acorn bags) and velcro
attachments to keep everything in place. While these dimensions may seem
small, I have all of my tools in the left pouch (inner tube, patch kit,
multi tool, a pair of CO2 cartridges, 3 tire levers, zip ties, and 4
 Irish
straps). The pouch on the right is used to keep my cell phone, garage
clicker, and keys; there is quite a bit of space left for snacks, a
 saddle
cover, and a bandana. I'd love to see the folks at Riv create some
Sackville versions of these because they're extremely versatile.

Have a look--I am attaching JPEG images to this post. Also, I'd love to
 see
any other accessories people make for their bikes.

[RBW] Re: 64 Atlantis still FS

2012-02-16 Thread Roger
I'm not in the market for an Atlantis right now, but I am curious
about yours.

IIRC, shortly after the Atlantis was released there was strong
lobbying by some people who wanted top tubes shortened on Rivendells.
Again from a foggy, decade old memory, it may have been Sheldon Brown
foremost among the short tubers. I looked up the earliest Wayback
Machine captures of rivbike, and indeed on 11/1/02 there was a 62cm
top tube spec for the Atlantis in the webalog section, but slightly
earlier in the main site info (8/27/02) it was listed as the later
standard of 60cm.

Have you ever measured your top tube?

A few offers fell through and this is still available. Admittedly,
I've also been lazy about marketing it.

I'm dropping the price to $1,650+actual shipping. There will be no
packaging fee as it has already been boxed by a bike shop- the result
of a previous potential buyer that didn't work out.

As it's boxed neatly already, any local (SF Bay Area (Mill Valley))
suitors will need to buy it boxed/disassembled. But I think the price
 would still be right.

Year 2000 64 Atlantis frame fork
 8 speed cassette

 XT front derailleur
 Shimano cantilever brakes
 Shimano Ultegra bar-end shifters
 Nitto Grand Randonneur handlebars
 Nitto Stem
 American classic seatpost

 Guards (700x32)
I also have a pair of new Schwalbe Big Apple 700x60s that I'll include
for free just because this was my only ride that could even
 potentially fit them.

Hope to get this to a good home soon.

To people I do know -I've found that making anyone feel good about the
good things about their bike is an excellent way to get them to ride
 it more often.

Question: So, what's the very best bike of all?
Answer: The one that makes you want to ride more!

You've found a universal and inexpensive way to improve almost any
bike.

I've only had one person give me any grief about my bike(s). I looked

Seriously, you feel like you know me well enough to make disparaging

To which they apologized and looked abashed.

Which is good, they should have been.

Someone has to be a special kind of dick to decide to say rude things
about someone else's anything to someone they don't know.

No matter what kind of bike it is - unless it is dangerous (ie: things
falling off, clearly broken) I always say the same set of things to
 people I don't know:
    How does it ride?
    Are you having fun?

If they answer in the negative to either of those - then I might see
if I can help. But most people answer in the positive and/or are
cheered on by this question and that, imo, completes my day.

To people I do know -I've found that making anyone feel good about the
good things about their bike is an excellent way to get them to ride
it more often. That, imo, is much more important than what kind of
bike they are riding. If someone comes to me and asks my opinion I
will give it. But I try to give it by talking up the positive things
about the kinds of bikes I ride and like, not by talking down other
 bikes.

Call people out when they are jerks. You never know - they might
realize they were being rude and try to be better, it does happen.

[RBW] Re: Every Day Carry - Here's Mine, What's Yours?

2012-01-26 Thread Roger
I'm surprised by the similarities of my kit with Amit's:

In my old Candy Bar Bag:

Pump
Hanky/Tool Roll with:
- Spoke Wrench
- Multi tool
- Tire tools
- Leatherman Micra
- Patch kit with Presta/Schrader adaptors 4mm, 5mm and 3/16 Allen
Wrenches
Coin Purse
Key Chain with locking hub key
Tissues with
- mini tube of sun-block
- lip balm
4.5x5.5 Notepad (homemade)
Wallet with:
- Kaweco fountain pen w/Noodler's Blue Heron ink
- Sodbuster Jr. pocket knife
iPhone
Spare Innertube (not shown)

Image at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/56856126@N02/6767278655/in/photostream

Each time I empty out the bag I try to remove unused items. These are
the ones that justify themselves over time. Maybe the Micra can go...

The wallet was from Etsy and meant to hold a phone, but I like it's
pocket for a pen and knife. I've found it's important to carry a
friendly looking knife so people assume you want to pare an apple or
open a box, not brandish a weapon. That Sodbuster is a great little
knife: it's one blade is sturdy, it fits my hand well, and it has even
become my favorite paring knife in the house. Kaweco pens are great
little pens as well.

Amit Singh wrote:
I'm reposting this with hopes of greater response because it's a cool

This subject of 'every day carry' is one of which I've been slightly
 obsessed.

Here is a link to an image of my EDC, and a list:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/amisingh/6760998841/

 - Bandana (serves as handkerchief)
 - Opinel No. 6 knife
 - Lip Ivo
 - iPhone 4 carried in Col. Littleton No. 50 Phone Wallet
 - Keys carried on ML Brown Braided Keychain
 - Shure E4 Earbuds
 - Lamy Fountain Pen
 - Moleskin Notebook (set up as GSD)
 - Swatch GB743
 - Canon S100 Camera
 - Surefire G2x Tactical Flashlight

I like how all this stuff is compact so it fits well inside of a small
trunk sack. When I'm not on the bike it's generally carried in a
pocket on my briefcase, and when that doesn't happen I can carry it
all on my person in various pockets, although I'm tempted to start
 carrying a man-bag or a m-urse.

This is a 'heavy load', but it's everything which I need to flip
between work and adventure. Works for me.

I'd be interested in seeing your EDC's.

http://everyday-carry.com/ is a neat website that shows lots of
carries. There are a few others which are similar.

[RBW] Re: Touring Load and Packing list with weights

2012-01-17 Thread Roger
I like a French Press, and figured a way to make a 16oz Contigo insulated
stainless mug and a French Press plunger do double duty for drinking and
coffee making. The Contigo fits water-bottle cages and is easy to use while
riding.

I re-purposed a plunger from a plastic Peets travel French Press that fits
nicely into the Contigo, and is just the right length to hold the grounds
tight when I put the lid on the mug. I don't let it bother me that the
grounds are pressed to the bottom of the mug while I'm drinking, and
sometimes there is a ground or two that gets loose.

For the cost of a few grams of plunger, a uni-tasking coffee pot is avoided,
and I can store the plunger in the travel mug until needed again.

Pictures prove it's real:

[RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?

2012-01-04 Thread Roger
I saw a 2008 Trek Catalog that shows geometries on the next to last
page. The 62cm Hunqa (largest size) is indeed a larger bike than a 25
Trek, but the 64cm Bombadil is more similar in size to your 67cm Homer
and especially closer to the 69cm Homer you considered.
http://www.trekbikes.com/pdf/2008/catalog/road/road_en.pdf

By the way, beautiful color on the Homer! What's that shade called? I
notice in your photos that you have racks front and back now on your
Homer. Have you ever tried it fully loaded? I'd be curious how well it
would compare to the 520.

2011-12-02 Thread Roger
There may be a misunderstanding here.

I think you'll find stated on line 2 of Dave's chart that the number
given for the 6 degree TT bikes is the theoretical length. The
internet spreadsheet looks to me consistent with the previous pdf I
downloaded and also from when I talked with Jay on the day I test rode

Maybe Dave will confirm.

I think the actual TT on the 58 is ~61cm which makes the theoretical TT
about 63cm, and the actual TT on the 62 is ~63cm and the theoretical TT is
 about 65.

[RBW] Re: updated geometry chart

2011-12-01 Thread Roger
This is indeed one of those things about storing data on a website; it
is so much more ephemeral than having a paper copy - and can be gone
or changed at a keystroke.

I applaud however much Rivendell can use their site as an archive for
those of us who want to revisit 'obsolete' information, but I also
realize there is a limit to how much a business can also be a library.
To me, Jim's website is an important resource, and I also download
info like geometry charts before they get updated.

Is anyone storing the blug for posterity? I have a full library of the
Riv Reader, but the blug has in many ways become the Riv Reader, and
could be gone with a crash, virus, or keystroke. I've read that
because early celluloid filmstock was unstable, something like 3/4 of
early Hollywood films no longer exist, and just like people who want
to revisit the films of Tom Mix, my life will be lessened a bit if
that happens with Rivendell's history.

Come to think of it, weren't many of the existing copies of the
'92-'94 Bridgestone catalogs saved from a dumpster by someone who
occasionally reads this forum?

Congratulations on getting back in the saddle, Peter.

That stem should be just the thing while you dial in your position -
and as your preferred position changes as you start to rack up the
miles.

I was mostly sidelined for 5 years. It's been over a year since I
could ride any significant distances, and I feel better the more I
ride. My bars have always been placed where they were most comforable,
which at first was quite high, but has inched down a little at a time.
I recently switched back to a drop bar so I would have higher and
lower positions. When I find I'm riding more in the drops, I nudge the
bar down until the drops and hoods are equally comfortable.

Ride comfy and ride lots.

[RBW] Re: WTB Bolt-On + High Flange Hubs

2011-11-12 Thread Roger
That's a good question which may not have a satisfying answer.
A decade ago, Roger Durham would have set you up with some great
Bullseye hubs. I have a couple of single speed hubs that have the
skewer hole threaded for bolts, so you can change your mind any time
you want. I imagine he's retired now.

I also am not bewitched by quick releases, but they do clamp well on
horizontal dropouts. As an aside, the one really nice little advantage
that bolt-ons have with single/fixed gears is that you can walk the
wheel to optimal chain tightness and wheel alignment by loosening and
tightening one side at a time.

I use mostly locking skewers, maybe that's a compromise that's halfway
satisfying for you. Pitlock is a current brand, but mine are Kore
brand. There are also allen key (non-locking) skewers, which are like
a bolt-on on one side...

Roger

On Nov 11, 2:40 pm, Smitty-A-Go-Go 54ca...@gmail.com wrote:

simplicity. Sure, I have bikes with QR wheels and there's even a QR seat
post clamp on one bike in my stable, but I go with bolts where possible.

I'm looking for a set of hubs for my AHH.

My fantasy hubs would be high flange with cut-outs, a cassette rear (135mm)
and bolts. I could be swayed to a freewheel if the bolts, high flange and
cut-outs are there.  I've found several suitable options for the front but
the rear is proving to be more difficult to track down.

I emailed Rich at RBWHQ to ask about a bolt conversion for their Phil
Rivy hubs, but no such conversion exists.

Hope has a bolt kit for their rear hubs. But it's set up for disc brakes. I
could leave the disc off but don't really want to spend that kind of money
for a hub that isn't what I want... I've found several other options that
aren't quite what I want for less money than a Hope.

I'm wondering if anyone on the list either has a suitable set of hubs (or
even just a rear) they'd like to sell or if anyone knows of a currently
available hub that meets the above criteria.

 Thanks, Smitty

[RBW] Re: GEO Charts

2011-10-28 Thread Roger
Oh, that wonderful, wonderful slack seat tube!

On my two bespoke bikes, the only deviations I've had done from
normal were to increasingly slacken the seat tube angle(and lengthen
chainstay and top tube accordingly). 72 was better for me than 73, but
it was 71 that really made things right.

I've test ridden a 64cm Sam, and I do believe it was the most stable
for me at very low speed/almost stopped of any bike I've ever been on,
and riding at speed is great as well. I attribute this to balancing my
weight more easily from the saddle without hands, and saddle setback
has everything to do with that. Long chainstays moving the rear wheel
further behind the saddle is important, too.

This is in delightful contrast to my early days of unsteadily trying
to balance on steep seat tubes (73+) and too short top tubes that put
my weight out over the front wheel. The Sam was even noticeably more
set back and delightful than the Hunqapillar setup I tried the same
day. The Hunq may or may not have maxed its setback, but it was
noticeably and less delightfully less set back on that day.

Beyond proper setback improving balance, it also is critical in
relationship to the pedal. Using unfastened footwear, even if just
occasionally, is instructive in allowing your feet to tell you where
they actually want to meet the pedal. On 72+ seat tubes and my B17
pushed as far back as I can, my feet still want to extend forward and
contact the pedal across the instep, not at the balls. My 71 allows my
feet to be happy with the balls on the pedal, which I prefer most.

I am so, so happy that even just this one designer is daring to go
below 72 and very much hope it isn't squashed by skepticism.

Now that tires are allowed to be wider for those who want it, and bars
can be raised higher for those who want it, the new frontier is more
saddle setback, for those who want that. And those who don't are still
well-served by merely mounting their choice of narrower tires,
lowering their stems, or scootching their seats forward on the rails.

[RBW] Re: Non-Aero brake levers for moustache bars

2011-10-24 Thread Roger
I've used DC 204, Tektro R200, and reverse pull levers with mousy ache bars. My
favorite combo if the reach is shortish is the beefy R200 and riding primarily
stretched out on the hoods. With a longish reach I like the reverse pull
levers, so you can brake with your weight back and have that clean bar. The 204
was always good, too, but not quite as handy for me to grip and stretch out.
Seems all my bikes get mousy ache bars sooner or later.

Those Superbes are indeed superbe I still love mine but need new hoods. Do
Campy NR pattern replacements fit right?

By the way-- mousy ache???
Gotta love autospell.
