[RBW] Re: Used Bike Pricing - General - Mindless.. Dribble
Kelly, I'll give these thoughts: 1. Somebody who wants to buy a used bike accepts that it will look used, but it will be a lot less expensive. For that reason, your repaint has extremely little value to your buyer. Most of the value in a repaint is that you got to pick the color. Once you've picked it, most of the value is spent. IMO. I want to buy a used 58cm Atlantis frameset. I'm not willing to spend an extra dollar for it having been repainted. 2. On the used market, high price complete bikes don't retain value. Part it out if you want to get more money out of your used bikes. Most of your used parts will work great on future bikes for you. Keep all the parts and sell all the excess frames, maybe with a wheelset. 3. Rivendells in particular, your buyer will want to spec their own build. Every part on your bike is a potential impediment to how they want to do their build. Another reason to part it out. 4. For fringe sizes, like a 68, the supply is tiny, but so is the demand. If your buyer isn't actively looking, you have to hook them on an impulse buy (meaning it has to be a screaming deal). If they are actively looking on this list, they'll post a WTB. Maybe you should just sit back and wait for a WTB and be ready for them when they come. Your buyer is surely out there. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. This Flite is my original from 1990 or 1991 and I finally decided that the cover was just too thrashed to continue use of it. I meant to pull it off leaving the foam and re-cover the foam, but the foam came off with the cover and would not let go. So I simply contact-cemented the new leather to the plastic base -- somewhat crudely, as you can see from the nose. The leather was considerably thicker than the original cover -- nickel thickness -- and would not fold around the edges of the base, so I cut it more or less flush therewith. Comfort: jury still out. My right-side arse was irritated at a spot, but then this morning I noticed that said spot was a wee bit sore -- we'll see how it goes. The left-side arse and remainder arse felt fine. Noise: I don't know why this should be so, but the saddle squeaks much more now than it did originally --it squeaked modestly then. The opposite of any of those is a lot worse, unless you think it's cool for amateurs to wear pro team kits. Or unless you think it's better not to introduce yourself or not help newbies. [RBW] Re: Introduction and a Rusty Question
Hi Chris Just my opinion, but I'd probably take a chance on it if the price was right. First thing I would do is try to determine why is it rusting. Is it because the original owner ride it a ton on an indoor trainer and just sweated all over the thing? If so, then it's rusting from the outside -- in, most likely, and you could probably contain it. If it's because the previous owner left it parked along the side of his beach house for 5 years, and it's from salt air, then I'd be nervous, because then it could be rusting everywhere. In the context of an in-person inspection, I'd look at all the springs (brakes, derailers) and the chainring bolts and the cables. Those are things that CAN rust. If those are clean, I'd feel better. If those are all rusty, then I'd feel worse. Next, try to raise and lower the seatpost and the stem. Do they slide easily? Nice. Are they seized in place? No bueno. Let's say, hypothetically, that I liked the story the owner told me and I took a chance and bought it. First thing I'd do is take the headset and BB apart. Is there nasty rust in there? If I was the type that really wanted it taken care of for certain, I'd consider stripping the frame and fork completely, and paying $150 to have it powdercoated. I'd have another real good look at it after having it media blasted. If I didn't want to go that far, I'd sandpaper the rusted area to get a better look at it all, and clearcoat the area afterwards so I can keep an eye on it. On Friday, August 30, 2013 12:22:02 PM UTC-7, ChrisG wrote: Hi All, I've been following the group for a month or two now and have really enjoyed learning about your escapes. I've been a bike commuter (on a hardtail Brodie mtb) for most of my 22 working years, but that has really tapered off in the past couple of years. Turns out the mtb really wasn't a very good fit (sizing) at all, but when I was younger that never really bothered me. I also just came to the realization that at nearly 50 years of age, my chances of winning the TdF are diminishing quickly ;) so I also sold the harsh riding, low bar Al road bike I'd had for a decade. I recently went to a good shop, was fit for, and bought a new Surly LHT. It's completely rejuvenated my love for cycling. The bike is great, and the fit is very Riv'ish: frame is 2-3 cm taller than my previous road bike and I've got it set up very similar to the Riv recommendation for saddle and bar height. The LHT had been my commuter and touring bike over the summer and it's been great. But now I'm thinking that I'd like to add something a little more spritely when I want to ride without racks and hopefully fall less behind my two 100# kids who just fly up our very hilly terrain. And of course I'm thinking of a Riv. I can't afford anything new right now, but I've got a line on a used Rom that is in my price range. I haven't seen it in person yet (it's a 2-3 hour drive away), but I would go and try it before buying. I'm worried though that the frame has some rust. My Brodie has some some rust spots on the frame that I've covered with clear nail polish and they haven't seemed to cause a problem. The Riv Rom though has rust in some of the lugs and I don't know if this should be a major concern or not as I've never had experience with this. The seller was kind enough to send me a pic of the worst spot and I've attached below. Hopefully the photo is large enough for you to see (I have it much larger, but the groups editor compresses it). Anyone have experience with rust in/near the lugs like this? Would this make you steer clear or do you think it is likely not a problem? Boy that sounds pretty horrible. A former co-worker at the bike shop had pretty major hand and elbow problems as well, and the four things in life he really liked doing were: drawing, guitar, cycling and mechanic work. All four severely aggravated his conditions. I know it was hard. He did use a full-susp 29er for quite a while. He also used a recumbent for a while. Riding antagonizes the pain and numbness. I ride a Rivendell Atlantis and it has been pretty much my only bike for the past 20 years or so. I run a White Brothers suspension seatpost, B-17 saddle, 2.2 wide tires at 40 psi, 100mm dirtdrop stem at max extension and woodchipper bars. I wear gel gloves and use brooks handlebar tape. I see two options. Sell my Atlantis (oh God NO!) and buy a 29er with a front suspension fork or full suspension (I have a bad back and have had multiple back surgeries) or run my air pressure at 20psi with ridiculously fat handlebar padding. I have very little weight on my hands as the *bottoms of the drops are level or higher than my saddle*. I have tried flat bars, bike fits, noodles, alt bars etc. The wood chippers are the most comfy so far. Does anyone have any experience with numb hands and cyclist palsy? Re: [RBW] WTB: A. Homer Hilsen 55cm, 700c wheel size. FF only
Yes, blakcloud, I assumed you were asking because you wanted a used one at a fair used price. I pointed out that you can order one from Riv just to dispute the assertion that very few of them were ever made. Even though the text on the description page does not list a 55, I know that they will take your order for a 55, and will recommend a 55 if that's the right size for you. The drop down menu for the sizes you can order does list the 55. I pointed that out to encourage your search for a used one. I expect that there are a lot more than a half-dozen 55cm 700c Hilsens in the world. I sincerely hope you find one in the condition you want and at the price you want. Plus if I wanted new frame, I would have not posted here looking for a used one. A new one for me, is $2300 plus 75.00 shipping to an American address, plus Canadian tax which is 13%, when I bring it back over the border, which is kissing $2700 American dollars. With the currency conversion right at this moment, it would be $2845.Used will still be cheaper even with the other costs being constant. Dan, I should have bought your frame when I first saw it in the spring. At the time I was going to go the 650 route so I discounted it as a possible bike. Now I am kicking myself. I am in no rush. If one comes up, then great. If it doesn't there are plenty of other options open up to me. One of the things this means is that I have had a knee-jerk reaction to what gets perceived as girls' bikes. You can see how this plays out in the attached photo of me circa 1963 having stolen my brother's Raleigh and matching Green Bay Packers football uniform. It's kind of a nice Deacon-Patrick-barefoot-safety-football-helmet mash-up but I think my pbh was a little off to actually go for a spin. But I think the photo makes the case for my inveterate tomboy personality trait. I entertained a mountain mixte long and hard coming into this custom adventure. As I was making the decision in 2006 that led to my Saluki, I rode a Glorious and just didn't fall in love with it. Then when I was at Riv for a few days this past March to figure out the custom, I rode a Betty to the grocery store (on a Riv mission for 85% chocolate) but I don't even think I got two blocks before coming back and asking for the Appaloosa again. They just didn't feel right to me. The subject of my self perception and perceptions of gendered bikes came up in talking about all of this with Grant and the crew. It was interesting talking to the Riv Chicos who talked about having had to overcome the mixte-as-girl-bike stereotype as they became fans and owners of Bettys/Yves/Gloriouses/Wilburys. Re: [RBW] Re: Custom Appaloosa Update
Personally, I think the standard Riv 110/74 compact triple is a better solution for most riders; but I'm not a STI user and I'm very familiar with this kind of triple and don't find them even slightly confusing. I totally agree with you there. Very useful and very non-confusing. That's why I have that setup, with bar-con shifters on both my touring bike and my tandem. It's fantastic! Furthermore, I'm glad we completely agree about compact doubles. You run your bike like a compact double -PLUS- a granny bail out for extraordinary circumstances that you practically never use. That's precisely how I use my touring bike and my tandem. A close range 46/36 compact double would be fine for you, just like it is with most people, but like a lot of people, you also choose to be prepared for extraordinary circumstances. I have no problem with any of that. Also, it doesn't surprise me much that when you tried a 44/30 and a 40/26 that you found the enormous jump troublesome, particularly on rollers. As you correctly pointed out, people have to find what they like on the terrain they will be riding. I end up using my 44/30 as a 1x9 (or 1x10 on one bike) PLUS a climbing range. If my riding was more on the Pacific coast, where there are a ton of rollers, I would probably swap my 30 tooth ring for a 32 or a 34, because the terrain would dictate far more frequent front shifts, as you correctly pointed out. There's a difference between going from a rarely used small granny to middle ring, and a routine, do it all day long on every ride, shift from small to large chain ring. It takes a lot of drama to force me to shift to the granny, and I don't mind a little of the same getting off of it. It happens only in exceptional circumstances: I spend most of my time riding in rolling country, not the mountains, and in rolling country I don't have to use the granny.A wide range double, on the other hand, is shifted often. However, everyone has to find gearing that they're happy with. There are obviously some who can tolerate frequent wide-range crossovers, and -- especially with the new breed of ultra wide range cassettes like the 11-36 -- many whose needs are fully met by them. And what are those spanning webs to attach a h2o cage? Gotta picture? Not exactly. Here's something close: http://ladyfleur.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/mixte-bike-on-caltrain.jpg?w=640 It's easy to see where you might mount a bottle cage on the downtube, but on your bike, which will have a top tube, I was thinking you might want the bottle cage mounted to the diagatubes. But there are two of them! Bridges spanning the gap could then possess the braze on for a bottle cage. In this picture the bridges serve as cable stops, but it is a similar idea. 40 x 26 is plenty. Run the numbers with any normal cassette. Compact double is all most people need. Re: [RBW] Re: Custom Appaloosa Update
Steve buddy 1. I would never categorize you in most people, so you can be totally right about your gearing choices without disproving my assertion that most people can do just fine with a compact double. :-) 2. This is another datapoint proving that you've been unfairly maligned as a Jan Heine disciple. You like cantilever brakes and triples. If you were a true Jan-zealot you'd be on centerpulls and compact doubles. Steve learns from many, but makes up his own mind, people! 3. I agree that a compact double with an ultrawide cassette has big jumps. What I meant by a normal cassette was more like an 11-26 or an 11-28 with a 44/30. If you cannot possibly live without a sub 22 gear then I agree that a triple provides better coverage. On my touring bike I happily run a 3x8 where I need really low gears. In general I agree 300% with your approach: Pick your high gear and your low gear and design it to cover the space with acceptable jumps, keeping an eye peeled for chain line. Double shifts are a lot less troublesome to me than you make it sound when my left side shifter never has to trim. Slam it against the stop for the big ring. Slam it against the stop for the small ring. On Thursday, August 22, 2013 4:02:18 PM UTC-7, Steve Palincsar wrote: On 08/22/2013 06:41 PM, William wrote: 40 x 26 is plenty. The range is just fine: 22 low, 98 high. Can't be bettered. But what happens inside the range? In the terrain I ride most, I'd stay on the big ring all the way down the block until I was forced to shift -- and I would be forced to shift every time it got steep, because 39 is not enough for me on 9-10% grades. What happens then? Let's say I go from the 40 to the 28T chain ring. Now I'm in a 25 gear, and that's so low I'm going to think I dropped the chain. I'll be looking for a gear lower than 38 inches, something in the mid to low 30s. Whatcha got? Upshift 4 and you get a 37, just about the same as where I was. Upshift 3 in back and I get a 33. I can live with a 33 -- but can I live with having to upshift 3 each time I cross over? I don't think so. That 54% difference in the chain rings means you can't ever just shift the front and keep on truckin', the jump is just too much. Unlike, for example, the 10-tooth difference between my 36 and 46T chain rings. There, if I'm feeling lazy or the terrain is steepening fast, I just shift the front and go from a 52 gear to a 40.5 -- something you can live with -- or I can upshift 1 and get a 46, next in sequence. What about up at the top end? 98 is a nice top end, in fact it's what I have now. But where's that 88.7 I have? Missing. Next gear is 2 teeth down, an 83. That's a hole I'd trip on often. Re: [RBW] Re: Custom Appaloosa Update
Regardless of the cassette in question, the big jump is due to the 53.8% difference between the chain rings. My jump is 47% between chainrings. That's much bigger than the 27% jump from your 36 to your 46, but it is smaller than the 50% jump from your 24 to your 36. I don't know if I should go mad or not! On Thursday, August 22, 2013 7:07:26 PM UTC-7, Steve Palincsar wrote: On 08/22/2013 07:25 PM, William wrote: Steve buddy 1. I would never categorize you in most people, so you can be totally right about your gearing choices without disproving my assertion that most people can do just fine with a compact double. :-) I make no comment about most people. I've not done any sort of quantitative comparison and have no data. Every one has their individual gearing needs, and it pays to figure out what you need given your body, your fitness and the terrain in which you ride. 2. This is another datapoint proving that you've been unfairly maligned as a Jan Heine disciple. You like cantilever brakes and triples. If you were a true Jan-zealot you'd be on centerpulls and compact doubles. Steve learns from many, but makes up his own mind, people! I like centerpulls, too. One of my bikes has Mafac Raids, another has brazed on Paul Racers. I also like dual pivot sidepulls, in the right situation. Regardless of the cassette in question, the big jump is due to the 53.8% difference between the chain rings. That insures that regardless of the cassette, when you do a front shift you will have a big, big difference between gears compared to a more typical 10 or 12 tooth shift. You also have to decide how large spacing between gears is good for you, and where in the range you like it close, vs where you like it wider (Patrick has written extensively on his preferences here, as has Jan; I couldn't live with either Patrick's or Jan's.) In general I agree 300% with your approach: Pick your high gear and your low gear and design it to cover the space with acceptable jumps, keeping an eye peeled for chain line. Double shifts are a lot less troublesome to me than you make it sound when my left side shifter never has to trim. Slam it against the stop for the big ring. Slam it against the stop for the small ring. Trimming isn't a problem for me (as a bar end shifter user). If/when I do it, I hardly even pay it any conscious attention. What you have to go through to do a double shift and stay reasonably in sequence is important to me. I would go mad if every time I needed a gear below 40 inches I'd have to cross over and upshift 3 or 4 at the same time, and I'd go mad if every time I shifted to the small ring it felt like I'd dropped the chain, or if every time I shifted from the small to the large chain ring it dropped my RPMs by half and doubled the pedal effort. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. William - The thumbie's as a vehicle to swap the shifters is really cool, I hadn't thought about that. I'm not entirely wedded to keeping bar-end's so I'm going to have to look at that. Do the thumb(ie) bases stay on their respective bar's or move when you swap bars? It depends. When I bought the SOMA version, I did so because they were hinged. At that time the Paul originals were not hinged. With the hinged SOMA version you can clamp them with the shim on the bullmoose, and clamp them without the shim on the tops of the Noodles. Also, I lied, or forgot. You do have to remove the shift cables to get the barcon shifters out of the barcon adapter that stays in the end of the Noodles. Duh. [RBW] Re: Cockpit Change-out's
For shifters I run Shimano barcons on the Noodles, with the housing completely outside of the handlebar tape. There are SOMA Thumbie bases on the bullmoose, and the barcons screw right into those bases. Zero cabling on the shift side. You do have to use a screwdriver to remove the shifters, though, but there is no derailer cable adjustment happening. When I bought these: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh5.htm I removed the friction shifter part and used it on another bike. They happen to make the best friction barcons in the history of mankind (IMHO). For brakes I bought a bunch of these: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ca21.htm so I can have the cable assembly fully strung up out to this straddle carrier ahead of time. Now if I want to take the cockpit off, I free the shifters and using only my hands, I QR the brakes and free up the entire brake cable assembly from slotted guides. The straddles themselves stay attached to the bike. The other cockpit has the brake cables all set up, all the way down to the straddle carriers. I just put the housing into the right stops (that's why they are slotted!) and Bob's your uncle. I've swapped once on an MB-5 from Flat bars to moustache and then back to a flat (bulmoose) setup where I left the cables installed on the shifters but I ended up still replacing 3 of 4 cables by the end of the process. Has anyone looked into using the cable disconnects a-la the SS coupler bikes as a short cut for cockpit changeout? [RBW] Re: Traveling with a bike
I'm told that some airlines are more bike friendly (Southwest, maybe others) but have no personal knowledge of their rates limitations Just to chime in on this one topic. I was just researching Southwest and their boxed bike fee was raised from $50 to $75 as of February 2013. That's their printed 'policy' but you hear lots of anecdotes of them waiving the fee for some people. On Monday, August 19, 2013 11:41:09 AM UTC-7, dougP wrote: Michael: My Atlantis has done a bit of traveling, both by air by ground. While I'm not familiar with the box you reference, I can offer some thoughts in general. Within the US, look into shipping your bike ahead of time via ground service. Great Debate about who to use: Fed Ex or UPS; no clear winner there. However, both will take larger heavier shipments for less money than the airlines. I have a hard plastic case that is right at the magic 130 size (girth plus length) for ground services. Despite it's 30 lb weight, the Atlantis (usually 35 lbs) plus some other junk does not trip the overweight button. The convenience of ground shipping is you can send it directly to your destination don't have to hassle getting it to the airport. Downside of course is being without your bike for a few days. Airlines charge high fees (check with your specific carrier; it varies continuously) AND seem to universally impose HUGE overweight charges for checked baggage over 50 lbs. I have gotten the Atlantis packed into a cardboard box under 50 lbs but it meant no racks carrying some heavier components in other luggage. I'm told that some airlines are more bike friendly (Southwest, maybe others) but have no personal knowledge of their rates limitations. Having your bike with you on the plane is nice, but oversize luggage is the first to get bumped to the next flight (not always bad because they have to deliver it). Once at the airport, a boxed bike is a bit of an albatross to drag around a pain if you have to use a cab, bus or train between the airport your destination. As to actual containers, I've used the regular old cardboard boxes that bikes come to shops. They are good enough for one trip, free, and readily available. The do not offer the greatest protection and do require quite a bit of disassembly careful packing. Allow several hours for the process. Another option is to have a trusted LBS pack ship it for you. You'll of course pay for this service but if you find a shop that ships bikes (not all do) they'll have experience. This can be especially handy on the return. Source the shop ahead of time, drop the bike off it will appear back home in a few days. An open question is whether to reassemble at your destination or have a shop do it. I know people who feel better just having a shop do it all at both ends. There are good arguments on both sides of the question but it's an individual choice. dougP On Monday, August 19, 2013 9:22:56 AM UTC-7, Michael Hechmer wrote: Slightly OT, but I posted this to the Lifestyle list with no response. Re: [RBW] Riv downtube shifters
Lee It is the general consensus that the more cogs you have in back, the more precise the user of the friction shifter must be. Almost everyone agrees that there is a line, beyond which you have too many cogs in back and can no longer execute good shifts with friction shifters. The thing you will find if you go poll a lot more riders is where that line is between good and bad. My view of the space is 5-cogs everyone agrees this is perfect for friction 6-cogs everyone agrees friction works fine 7-cogs almost everyone agrees friction works fine (~98% of riders) 8-cogs a significant percentage of riders think this is where friction shifting becomes a problem. I'd estimate about 20% of riders say they won't run friction here 9-cogs It's a lot closer to 50/50 here. You will get a LOT of anectdotal YES votes and a lot of anectdotal NO votes. If there is a gray area, it is here 10-cogs You will hear occasional reports of trying it and hating it. Once in a while you'll hear somebody say I use it in friction and it's OK. but probably 90% or more agree index is better 11-cogs I've never heard of anyone trying it Me, I've never tried friction shifting on 10 or 11, but I have on several bikes with 9 speed. The only time I hated it was with a Dura Ace rear derailer. I switched that bike to index. With a short cage XT derailer, it's great, and I have that setup on 2 bikes. So the line for me is between 9 and 10, and 9 is a light gray gray area. On Friday, August 16, 2013 10:03:50 AM UTC-7, Lee Legrand wrote: Thanks for the replies everyone. [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders wear for cycling shorts for long rides?
I know there is a general anti-padded-shorts vibe that emanates from Walnut Creek. I think Grant is a LOT less anti than people seem to think. What's the worst thing Grant has ever said about padded bike shorts? In my experience, the worst thing he's ever said about padded bike shorts is his use of the term diaper. I think that's a very poorly chosen word, and it is insulting, and unnecessarily mean. Mark Abele wears regular padded bicycle shorts and I would bet a dollar that Grant does not insult Mark or Mark's clothing when he rolls in. Hey Mark! Nice DIAPER! I just don't see that happening. Grant's true stance, as I understand it, is not anti-padded-shorts. Grant is anti-the-industry-telling-you-that-you-MUST-wear-padded-shorts. Grant emphatically tells you to wear what works for you. Grant tells you to wear what you've got. Grant tells you that you don't have to think that you need to wear a bicycle uniform to operate a bicycle. If you want to wear bike clothes, go ahead. Just don't feel like you have to apologize to anyone if you want to ride your bike in Birkenstocks and board shorts. You don't need a walking uniform, so you don't need a bicycle uniform. First and foremost it is YOUR choice, and don't let anyone choose for you. That's what Grant says. Maybe I'm wrong about it, but on this topic I think many people misunderstand Grant's position. I believe that misunderstanding is part of what earns Grant the largely unfair reputation as a retro-grouch. He's not the least grouchy man I've met, but he's definitely on the less grouchy end of the spectrum, in my book. Stubborn on many things, sure. I measured the length and they are 31.5cm with maybe a centimeter of adjustment available. I held them up to my 60cm Sam and no way would it fit. It's most commonly considered a reference to Errol Flynn, who had a notoriously easy time with the ladies. When you effortlessly accomplish something, you are in like Flynn. Google it, it's pretty entertaining stuff. There's one variant where in like Flynn means you effortlessly did something bad, and not only succeeded, but you also got away with it, unpunished. RoadieRyan Was it possible you were trying to install 22.2mm grips onto 23.8mm bars? Anyway, Michael Riv cork grips are 22.2mm and Albatross bars are 22.2mm. I agree with Ryan that you should do a dryfit first, but it should be easy. Mine slid on effortlessly when dry-fitting them. Then I used a gaskety rubber material to put them on, like Andy suggested. Days later I could still kind of rotate them like motorcycle throttle. I didn't like that so I re-installed them with Gorilla Glue. That stuck them in place, and I think I waited overnight. Next time I had to get them off though, I couldn't. I had to scrape them off and put on a new set when I was ready. Re: [RBW] Re: Tires/Wheels for new Sam Hillborne
You can not run 650B wheels on a 700C Sam Hillborne. The reasons are threefold 1. Reach. The brake clearance on a 700C Hillborne is dialed for a long reach sidepull brake. A 650B would require ~20mm more reach than an already long reach brake. There are no good 90mm reach brake calipers. 2. Drop. Grant already dialed the frame design of the Hillborne for 700xfat tires. Among those things that are dialed is the BB drop. Run smaller diameter wheels, and your already low BB height will be in true pedal-scraping territory. Virtually all recent 700c Rivendells are lousy candidates for 650B conversion for that reason. The roadier Riv models of several years ago are good candidates because they were designed for 700xskinny and have less drop. 3. Geo. Grant designed the stability and handling for the 700c wheel. He does things differently for 650B wheels. If you were dead-set on running 650B wheels and wanted the price and sizing of a 56 Sam, you'd switch to a 55 Betty Foy and run 650B wheels. It would work great. On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 7:18:11 AM UTC-7, Paul Brodek wrote: You can fit 650b wheels on any 700c bike, but some 700c bikes won't fit 650b tires. This isn't an issue for Mark's Sam, but it's worth noting for 650b conversions in general. If your frame has tight clearances with 25mm 700c tires, currently-available 650b tires will be very tight. If 23mm 700c tires are tight, you're likely SOL without frame modification. AFAIK there are no 650b tires narrower than 32mm currently available; GB Cypres and Hutchinson Confrérie des 650 are the narrowest at 32-33mm. The only very slightly narrower tire sometimes available is the discontinued Michelin Megamium, 31-32mm. I have two 650b conversions in-house with less than 2mm tire clearance at the chainstays, a '96 Waterford 1200 with Megamiums and a '76 Mooney with Confreries. Both are pretty tight with 25mm 700c tires. They have vertical drops so no chance of wheel slippage, and I'm stupid enough to ride both---on decent roads, not too far from home. The Mooney is Reynolds 531 but has great paint, so I'm not ready to have the chainstays crimped. The W'ford also has great paint, but beyond that it's built with Reynolds 753, not a great candidate for crimping. Nothing wider than the Megamiums will fit in the W'ford, so when either of those tires dies it's back to 700c. The question is most definitely what would you gain with 650b? The conversion ideal is using a 650b tire with enough volume to both improve the ride and not drastically change handling. On these two bikes I'd rather have 31-32mm 650b rubber and tight clearances than 25mm 700c rubber and tight clearances. I would love to see a true 30mm supple 650b tire to help give better road manners to crit bikes... Paul Brodek Hillsdale, NJ USA Quoting Tim Gavin : You can fit 650B wheels on any 700C bike. I know there's clearance for 40 mm tires on the Hillborne but don't know if that is with/without fenders. 2. Anybody ever put 650B wheels on a 56 Sam? Looking on the Riv website at the page for the Betty Foy, it says that the Betty and the Sam can take the same volume tires. The Betty mostly uses 650B wheels. As of now I'm planning on 700c wheels, but am intrigued with 650B. Thoughts? Thanks, Mark -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
