[RBW] Re: Dialing in a Brooks Saddle

2024-01-31 Thread alan lavine
Hi Jay,
Your story sounds familiar. Twenty years ago, I was a dedicated Brooks
man...loved the leather idea, the color, the aging, etc. And mine too, were
comfortable right out of the box. N.B. I have always been a fan of padded
bibs and chamois cream.

Then the birthdays started to accumulate and my handlebars mysteriously
levitated higher and closer, this changed things. And my dermatologist
reminded me that as we age, the skin thins and we lose subcutaneous
fat...and I'm a skinny butt guy to begin with. Ultimately, after an
infinite numbers of adjustments, I had to give up two beautifully aged and
broken in honey tan saddles.

As an aside, as I have lost some flexibility with age, and gained some
degenerative spinal changes, what helped me was having a lower than
predicted saddle height and a smaller saddle offset w/r to the BB. This may
or may not help you.

Not to be pessimistic, but age changes everything. But you should
definitely give a shot, trying all posible positions and angles. Best of
luck !
Alan in NYC, adjusting to aging as. best I can.

[RBW] Re: Comfy aluminum frames?

2023-08-06 Thread alan lavine
Interesting. I had a T1000 touring bike years ago, and even then I found it
too rigid. As I age this issue takes front and center, I'm like the
princess and the pea. I agree that the first step is always fat, supple
tires. For me, that eliminates any frame that can't take anything bigger
than 28's.
As always, YMMV.

[RBW] FS: Simple One 58 cm, F,F,HS,BB. Dark Green

2023-02-20 Thread alan lavine
Hi All,
I bought this from a list member but somehow it never gelled for me, in
addition it was somewhat redundant with other bikes and I need room for
incoming.

Serial # M1011158. I will send fotos once I've cleaned it up a bit but it
has the usual nicks and scratches from use but no dings or dents. HS and BB
(108 mm) are in good shape. It's dark green and cream accents.

About pricing: not too many sales of these , so hard to find the market
value. I guess people are keeping them. How about $850? If this is not
right, please let me know.

Also, local sale/pickup preferred VERY strongly, a lot on my plate right
now. I'll give a $50 discount and throw in handlebars from my vast
collection, haha! Tell me what you like/need. Located on the UWS Manhattan.

Best,
Alan

[RBW] Re: FS: Rambouillet 58cm Orange

2023-01-14 Thread alan lavine
Very nice bike, wish I could get it.
A question about the build: How did you get the Soma Highway One bars thru
a Nitto quill stem? I was under the impression these bars required an open
face stem due to the abrupt curves.
Thanks,
Alan in NYC

Someone responded with an offer to trade a non Riv bike, and I think its a
good idea to be open to that. So the criteria would be:
-steel or CF, no aluminum
-ST 59-61, TT 57-59 (approx). I'm 5'11" with PBH 90.
-ability to raise the HB slightly higher than the seat.
Let me know what's been languishing in your garage because it wasn't just
right.

Also, regarding a saleI mentioned I wasn't quite sure how to price the
Cheviot as not many are changing hands (a good sign?). If you think I'm
off, feel free to make a reasonable but not low ball offer.

Sorry to say that no trades are in sight and several have expressed
interest in a sale.I tried to research a reasonable price but data are hard
to come by since very few of these end up on the market. I'm gonna ask
$2150 net to me. Buyer pays shipping, even if it requires 2 boxes because
of size. I'll do the tedious packing for free. Local pick up earns a $100
discount. The Brooks saddle stays with me, it's attached to my butt.
Here are the details, LMK if I've forgotten something.

Soma Oxford handlebars, albatross equivalent
Nitto Technomic stem
Vintage no name mt. bike brake levers
Suntour bar con shifters, black lever covers labeled Raleigh
Sackville HB bag
Tektro 559 brakes with kool-stop inserts
Shimano Deore hubs laced to Mavic 519 rims
Soma Supple Vitesse SL 700 x 48 tires with minimal use
Love Mud flat pedals
VO double crank 46/30
uno seatpost
Claris front der. Acera rear der.
7 speed Shimano HG cassette 34 T max.
Greenfield kickstand
KMC chain
Carradice Barley bag with Bagman support
Last, but by no means least, Sackville hub shiners!!

Not the way I thought it would go, but let's go with it. Hope this all
sounds reasonable to you.
Best,
Alan

[RBW] Interested in a trade?

2022-07-17 Thread alan lavine
Hello All,
So I have a recently acquired Cheviot 60 cm and I'm finding it hard to
"bond". It's a big bike and a little bulky to move around and maybe a bit
big for me. The mixte frame, while novel, is not for me. Would like to get
back to drop bars, maybe.

Maybe someone has a diamond frame Riv they'd be interested in a swap?
Complete bike, frame, or any combination thereof?
My preferred bike has ST 60-61 and TT 57-59, all c-c. I'm 5'11 (formally
6') with PBH 90.
Hit me up with ideas, I'm open. Outright sale is also possible.

Thanks,
Alan

I appreciate all leads and ideas. On the listings project, mentioned above,
there are some spaces in LIC, an area I hadn't thought about.
This may be an unreasonable question right now, until we have something
specific to consider, but does anyone have an idea of how much they would
be able/willing to contribute to this? It might help in limiting the
options. VERY rough ballpark figure, of course, with no obligations at all.

We had a nice meet up yesterday at the Spritzenhaus (gotta love that name):
Kai, Michael, Stephan and me, all on Rivendells from various eras.
To all New Yorkersanyone interested in sharing some rental space to set
up as a workshop? My guest bedroom is becoming overrun with stuff. Could be
in Brooklyn, upper Manhattanjust need easy access via bike. I'm
envisioning a bike shop like atmosphere, work bench with vise (Yeh), shared
tools and spare parts. Small frig with libations, used couch for a nap, etc.

Anyone else have this pipe dream? Or a lead on some space?

Good Morning All,
I'm hoping that tomorrow will be better for some of you, at least. I
suggest meeting at the Spritzen House, 33 Nassau st, Greenpoint, around 5-6
pm. Not sure where a good ride would be in late afternoon NYC traffic, but
we can discuss ideas for future rides depending on when folks are
available. I'm thinking tomorrow as meet and greet thing...the beer and
sausage selection is excellent.
I also think it would be fun to bring a list, written or mental, of
parts/bikes wanting to sell/exchange/give away/etc. We all have stuff lying
around waiting for a better life. For me, its drop bars.

Let's see a show of hands!

Sure, we can do later on Wednesday. The last meetup was about 3 years ago, I
think. Maybe more. We were just a handful, and in fact I’ve bought and sold a
few small items with a couple of them…don’t me ask names! We could each bring a

Working on the Cheviot. See you next week! Come one come all.

[RBW] Re: Searching for Cheviot info

2022-04-19 Thread alan lavine
Bill,
Thanks for the useful information, I was just curious is all. Maxway is the
Japanese company that built the frame?
Leah: Sage green. It's beautiful but orange would be the holy grail. My 7
yr. old grandson liked the color so much he (we) are painting his beat up
old Diamond Back to match, hah! If we ever finish I'll send a pic. So far,
his tee shirt looks like a piece of modern art.

[RBW] Searching for Cheviot info

2022-04-19 Thread alan lavine
Hello,
I recently bought a new Cheviot frame from a list member that I'm slowly
building up. Trying to find out the year of production, where produced,
etc. I think they were first released around 2014 or 2015, but anyone know
when they stopped and how many were made?

>From the bb shell: M18100041 and BBM1. Its a size 60, if that matters.

Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Another option is just an informal meet up, say at a beer garden in Brooklyn,

[RBW] WTB-wheelset

2022-03-31 Thread alan lavine
So I'm looking for a wheel set for my newly acquired Cheviot
frame.Requirements: 9 Spd cassette, wide enough for 42-50 700c tires, and
robust. Meaning that me and the bike will be a bit over 200 lbs and at some
point may do some CC touring, but not fully loaded touring. Will be using
tubes.On road riding only.

Open to a lightly used set and/or recs for purchasing new. Looking to spend
around 250-350 $.

Thanks to all,
Alan

Hi Minh,
I'm on the UWS in Manhattan and I'd be happy to join you.A few years ago I
organized a meet up at a beer garden in Greenpoint. Only a handful of us
came but fun. Would love to repeat when the warm weather comes.Actually,
for those fully vaccinated and comfortable eating in restaurants, I suppose

Another option is stainless steel zip ties, placed where they are obviously
noticeable. Very difficult to cut with diagonal pliers but easy to cut
with sharp surgical sissorsthat's the dirty little secret. But it
looks impressive. Available on line at Home Depot.

I have a Dahon Tournado, bought off CL locally. It’s the only one I’ve ever

gets frequent use around town. Just so happens you can take the frame
apartI’ve traveled with it 3-4 times and never paid for oversized or bike

I would buy a Breakaway in a heartbeat if something happened to this one.
Does anyone have any more information about this Dahon?

[RBW] Re: Packing and/or shipping bike damage: Any strategies for successful resolution?

2018-10-10 Thread alan lavine
Sorry, that sucks.

My experience with bike shops packing bikes has not been good. Mostly this
has happened when I'm traveling away from home, and don't have the
facilities to do it myself. It's often relegated to the low person on the
totem pole of the shop, since it requires no special skills, at least in
their eyes. I've had minor damage and once lost a classic Riv saddlebag
with some great tools inside.

So if I'm home, I'll do it myself, even if I really don't enjoy the
project. If traveling, I would make it a point to discuss with the owner
or manager the specific details of the job, who's going to do it, maybe
even provide them with some store bought packing materials for the job.
Don't just leave it with the person behind the counterdo what you can
to politely call attention to the job so its not routine to the shop. No
guarantee, but might help.

Hi All,
Surprising lack of interest in this QB...I should have sold it at the
beginning of the summer, but was hoping for a tour that didn't happen.

How about a price reduction to $1200 ?

Selling this Riv classic that doesn't get much use. I set it up for
touring which didn't (and won't) happen.
Serial # 04019085
ST 60 cm c-t, TT 58 cm (my measurements)
Wheels: Phil Wood hubs laced to Belgium HED 32 spoke rims. Compass Barlow
Pass EL tires, 700 x 38 with good tread
Drive train: Sakae XS crank with 38 and 36 chainrings, Surly dingle 17-21
in rear. This yields useable gears of 61,49,47 inches. Excellent chain
line. 170 crank length.
Nitto noodles 46 (44 brake hoods c-c) with Nitto Dirt Drop stem 8cm.
Brooks leather bar wrap, lots of beausage.
Brakes: Avid shorty 4 front, Paul Canti rear. Shimano levers with gray
plastic.
Brooks B17 saddle, good condition, on no name seatpost with decent setback.

Includes:

Will post some picks as soon as I get it cleaned up a bit, but y'all know

Re: [RBW] Re: Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-07 Thread Alan Lavine
Hi Craig,
Thanks for the interesting info. I’ve had some experience with fixed gear
riding, just locally and on a much lighter bike. Having the QB now, with those
great track dropouts, I thought I should take advantage and make a multi-gear
fixie. This would allow me to extend my travels out of the city.

So thinking as you did (great minds and all that) I started with a 39 up front
and 17/21 dingle in the rear, yielding a 63” high and 51” low. No FW yet. As
the weather warms (40 this AM when I rode) I’ll start going further, into New
Jersey, where there are hills (no mountains). And then we’ll see. I ride
better when its warm, and will be in better shape in the summer, so I may make
changes as this experiment progresses. I also want to be cautious with my
knees, which are OK now, but there is some history there.

I am incredibly jealous of your weather.

[RBW] Re: Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-06 Thread alan lavine
Appreciate all the input. I think for now, I'll leave a single up front,
39 or 40, with the dingle 17/21 in the rear. Gives a high in the mid 60's
and low around 50. Since I don't do mountains, like Deacon, this should be
OK. Then we'll see where it leads.

[RBW] Gearing for Quickbeam

2018-04-05 Thread alan lavine
Hi All,
Changing a few things on a new to me QB, and was wondering how others have them
set up. For the rear I have a 17/21 dingle that I want to use, but haven't
decided about the front. Single or double chainring?
Would love to hear what others have used, and for what purpose, I.e. around
town, touring, climbing, etc. My use would be mostly around town, occasional
30-40 mile rides with moderate climbs, but no off road use. Maybe CC tours in
the future.
Also, how often do you actually change the gears? I wonder if I'd be too lazy
to do it often, and just use a geared bike when needed. So maybe a single up
front and dingle in the rear would suffice.

Thanks,
Alan

Hello All,
Interesting thread! I've been convinced about the benefits of low carbs
for awhile now, even though compliance is spotty.
I'm very interested in the fasting aspect, and am reading the book
mentioned in another post about it. I would love to hear more about
fasting from real people doing it: how often, what regimen, how to fit it
into social and family meals, etc.

I'm not diabetic or overweight. My personal interest is to lower my
elevated LDL cholesterol. I'm currently on 2 meds (not statins-can't
tolerate) and really not having any side effects from them, but would love
to eliminate them if possible.

[RBW] Re: Calling Ron Mc for handlebar comparison photo

2017-11-27 Thread alan lavine
Thank you all for your suggestions. I have arthritis of the hands and
wrists, and unrelated, several degenerated spinal discs. These are
generally not too much of a problem and I can still ride 30-40-50 miles but
feel the aches and pain after. Bars higher helps the hands, but too
upright hurts the back. So looking for that sweet spot of compromise.

Lee is correct about core strength and my exercise regime is varied and
includes swimming, Pilates, yoga, stretching.

My opinion about upright position on bikes: older folks need to avoid
being too upright, as the road forces get transmitted directly up and down
the spine. As we age, the shock absorbing discs get dessecated, shrink,
and lose that ability to absorb shock. This makes it more likely to
compress nerve roots as they exit the spine. A gentle arch is much better
at shock absorption and each of us has to find that position for
him/herself.

Interesting to note the Grant, in recent years, seems to have moved to more
upright positions. Is he not aging as well?

Best,
Alan

Thanks for the info, Evan. I was hoping to see that photo because they all
have slightly different shapes, even though similar.

Curious about how many others are slowly moving away from drop bars, as I
am. For me, its definitely an aging/arthritis/flexibilty issue. But I
find that too upright makes my back hurt, as the vertical forces are
transmitted straight up and down the spine. Finding that Goldilocks spot
is a challenge...been through many cockpits last few years!
