[RBW] Re: Who needs a custom?

2020-03-31 Thread phil k
I went the custom route - though not a Rivendell. I never found Rivendells
to fit quite how I wanted with drop bars and a previous custom didn't quite
fit me as well. I was very close to pursuing a Riv custom, but was on the
fence about another custom.

Then my wife told me if I wanted to get a custom that I look into Grand
Bois since we were gonna go to Japan for our honeymoon. She knew I followed
them, and she liked the idea of a having a bike as a souvenir from our
honeymoon, and she wanted me to go in-person for fitting and also wanted to
visit Kyoto.

I walked into the shop, and Ikuo measured me up and fit me on the bike. I
had a very particular idea of what I wanted - but it was clear Ikuo was was
in charge. It was clear he had been doing this for a long time.

Few months later, my bike came in fully assembled. I was wary because I
normally have the tops of my drop bars above my saddle. However, this bike
didn't even come with a stem high enough to get the tops above the saddle.

I kept everything how it was and the bike is amazing.

I feel like with all the money I lost buying and selling all my bikes, I
should've gotten my custom sooner and saved money.

Michael this looks good!

I would love a lighter tubed Hunqapillar that is slightly bigger than the
48cm I used to have!

That is also my favorite Riv color, aside from the bronze-green of their
older Cheviots.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for 650b tires in 42 to 45mm range?

Hey Ash,

Pasela 42mm are nice. there are some folding bead version. More on the
tougher side. My favorite to ride that strikes a good balance between
supple and tough are Grand Bois Hetres, I've ridden on some light gravel
roads.

I second this Deacon's suggestions. You can maybe fit an extra cage or two
at the top using these. Also might be able to fit another one on the
downtube as well.

[RBW] Re: Mark's front rack on Sam Hillborne with V brakes

2019-06-19 Thread phil k
This is maybe the best rack to use on the same hillborne with V-brakes.
Depending on the v-brake you just need to get the tomestone fiving board
into the fork crown hole. I suggest going over the brake cabling.

I've also seen Nitto canti racks as well, but that is more variant
depending on brake arm lengths etc.

Hi Roberta,

Standover with 42mm Pasela is 31.5 to 31.75 inches. I wear 29 in seam
jeans. With shoes, the top tube touches my pelvis with both feet flat on
concrete. I'm 5ft 6", and have shorter arms and shorter legs.

Dyno light would attach via mount on fork crown, which I would supply and
put together before shipping.

Hope that helps,

I ran into the same problems when I had the cork grips when I shellaced

Paul motolites are very powerful brakes. I had them on my Hunqapillar a
couple of years ago. It's one of the most powerful mechanical brakes I've
used. The response is very immediate, easy to set up. and very robust.

The flipside, when you brake it engages very quickly, giving a grabby feel.
This happened even on my polished Atlas rims.

[RBW] Re: Brifter setup for my Sam: looking for options

If you ride predominantly on the hoods, I'd look at gevenalle. They are
indexed, but also have a friction mode should you ever need it. Super
comfortable and convenient. Also allows you to dump your cassette when
shifting, instead of shifting each gear one by one.

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-05-06 Thread phil k
Hey Sean,

IIRC, the B17 specials have a bit thicker leather, so it takes some time to
break in. If you're a lighter rider, it will probably take longer. If you
haven't ridden awhile, your core muscles might not be used to biking, so
your body make be tempted to shift forward to put the weight on your hands,
thus you are probably sitting more towards the nose of the saddle than the
saddle itself.

I suggest you put some proofhide on the saddle, let it work in the leather
for a couple of days and go out for a ride. I would suggest tilting the
nose of the saddle upward so it creates sort of a hammock to keep your
glutes on the back of the saddle.

I usually put proof hide on, once every few months until it breaks in. Also
helps to tilt saddle nose upward, so it create sort of a hammock to keep
your glutes on the saddle. Raise your bars up to help with this as well.
Ride like that for a couple of months and your saddle should be broken in.
Your body will also adjust and get stronger, and you'll probably be able to
lower your bars slowly back to where it was. If you're a lighter rider,
it'll take you longer to break in the saddle. I had a Brooks swift that
took me 2 years to break in.

Hope that helps!

This is true. My biggest gripe with the cantis I almost forgot about - it
cannot fit anything wider than 54mm according to their specs. I wanted to

Re: [RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-24 Thread phil k
My one dislike for the Rene Herse cantis are the roller yokes. They are
bulky and take more real estate and interfere with the fork crown mount of
a rack, they are also finicky to set up considering the rest of the brakes
are a breeze to set up. I had to use a more traditional yoke like your
second picture to get more clearance on traditional Nitto rando racks.

[RBW] Re: FT: My 54.5cm MIT AHH for your 54cm AHH or Saluki

2019-04-10 Thread phil k
Thanks for sharing your experience Chad. Yes, I've been through a lot of
Rivs mainly because my proportions seem out of the norm.

To be clear 54.5 when riding with shoes is no problem. I'm not a stickler
about standover, especially on a road bike like this. With shoes if I tilt
the bike even 85 degrees I get several centimeters of relief. When I told
Riv I don't care about standover, they directed me toward a 53cm or a
54.5cm AHH. I told them I wasn't going to go off-road and needed something
to ride on pavement, which is how I settled on the AHH.

The main issue is that I don't have quite the time to ride as long as I
used to, and have found myself doing shorter rides for exercise. Therefore,
I would like to get my bars lower, but with the upslope I cannot get the
bars where I want even with it down all the way.

It rides great, so I'll keep it if no trade comes up, but it's just kind of
one of those things.

I would say the AHH is a bit more zippy. I think it depends on if you need

If you need it to support more weight, then a longer strut to the dropouts

I currently have a 54.5 MIT AHH. I just built it up. It rides well, but I
think it's slightly big for me.

I wanted to post here to see if any 54cm AHH owners out there wanted to try
the new long wheel base AHH. Let me know and we can work out a trade and
all the details.

[RBW] Re: Top Tube Upslope - How much difference does it make?

I think it depends on how far up you want your bars as well. For me, I rode

Re: [RBW] Coffee grinders -- I **know** that this is NOT off topic!

2019-03-16 Thread phil k
Patrick the problem is that once beans are roasted they start off gassing.
Carbon dioxide exits which is good, but oxygen is introduced.

It's not "bad", but your beans will be stale.

OTOH, green beans stay "good" for longer.

Trader Joes had a really good Ethiopian Honey Process coffee that was like
$6 a can. I should've bought 10 of those. I haven't seen them in any around
me. Their winter blend is also really good for the price.

Ceremony Coffee has to be one of my favorites.

Onyx is also good but pricier, however, they commit to paying much more
above market price to ensure their farms keep operating.

2019-03-14 Thread phil k
Also to answer your other topics of interest.

Storing:

I use amber mason jars. Nothing fancy really needed. Most coffee will last
for quite some time. Like Patrick, I also roast small batches and consume
them rather quickly between my wife and I

Brewing:

I really like the Hario V60. It gives a lot of control - small stream, slow
pour will give a mild and rich cup, slight fast pour will give a brighter
and acidic cup. Also allows you to experiment if you want. I usually go
about 1:16 coffee water ratio. Usually 12g per 200g of water in. I've been
digging the 4:6 method a lot lately. You can google the recipe.

Kalita Waves are also nice too. Very forgiving. I really like using it, if
I don't have the time to pay attention to my pourover.

I would also suggest for pourovers to go medium to medium coarse grinds.

[RBW] Re: Coffee grinders -- I **know** that this is NOT off topic!

2019-03-14 Thread phil k
Hi Patrick,

If you're going to grind a lot of beans, then an Encore Baratza is your
best bet. You can buy refurbished ones from their website just under $100.

I highly recommend staying away from any ceramic burr grinders like the
Hario or Porlex. I've had both and they don't compare to more high end
manual grinders.

I have a Kinu M47. There is no equal manual hand-held grinder I've tried.
It outclasses my Lido 3 and Aergrind. Easier grind adjustment, feels more
sturdy, easy to take apart and clean, awesome grind catch cup. It's my only
used grinder for the past few months. I make espresso, aeropress, to
pourover, and it handles well if not better than my electric Encore Sette
(which I've had to get parts replaced a couple of times). It's got a 47mm
burr which is bigger than Lidos, Commandantes, etc. I can grind 15g of
beans in probably 10-15 secs depending on the roast. It took about 20 secs
to grind the same amount on my Capresso electric grinder. Also took around
30-35secs on my Hario and Porlex.

Kinu sells a cheaper and smaller Kinu M47 Traveler. It's a little over $100
cheaper than its bigger brother, but keeps the same burr size at 47mm.

The Aergrind is a good manual grinder that is portable. Smaller burrs than
the Kinu, but it's also cheaper. I got mine for 80 pounds direct from
Knock's website. The quality is not as high as the Kinu, but it's cheaper.
I prefer it over my Lido because the grind adjustment is much easier.

Hope that helps

Phil

[RBW] Re: Atlantis build - how retro should I go on the drive train?

2019-02-26 Thread phil k
If you go friction it doesn't matter. You don't have to lock yourself into
a specific cassette. That being said, 7 speed cassettes are still sold
cheap and plenty by Shimano. If you want higher end, you can just cobble
together your own cassette. Grand Bois still does 6 speed cassettes.

The Atlantis is 135 rear spacing (like most Rivs). Hub doesn't really
matter. You can get the hubs that are for 8-10 speed cassette or ones that
are for 10/11 speed and just put spacers on them. I've tried 7-11 speed
cassettes. My fast bike is using 2x6 speed. My commuter sees 2x8.

2019-02-06 Thread phil k
*Collin A asked if I had any pictures to upload and if I built it out or
remained as a frameset :*

No pictures yet, my wife surprised me with a date night last night and took
me to eat paella for the first time. It was very delicious, but also put me
in a sleepy mood and I forgot. I will make it a point to take pictures and
post them tonight! The frameset was built out, and I rode it back and forth
to the wine shop down the street a few times until freezing temperatures
kept me off the bike. I then took apart most of the bike intending to put
drop bars so I could hand down a "practically new bike" to my wife and get
myself another, but didn't get around to it. As I was about to work on the
bike for her the other night, is when she pointed out what I stated above.
Which prompted me to put the bike up for sale and get started on getting a
bike to her choosing not mine.

*Laing stated that a new front derailleur is needed: *

The Hillborne uses 28.6 clamp. So if the Clem H uses a 31.8 clamp, you
would need a shim which is very inexpensive.

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-01-04 Thread phil k
Though I don't agree with equating whiny attribute to girls, I agree with
the sentiment. I kind of saw it as Riv reminding us during holiday season
that they have gift cards. Grant has always been candid and transparent
about his business though he doesn't have to. He's honest, and I appreciate
that honesty and know it will go into good bikes and good customer service.
He could've easily window dressed it as something else, but their cash flow
is very clearly limited by moving their flagship model to Taiwan. I think
people forget, customers get a cheaper Atlantis/AHH.

It's a shame to unsubscribe considering the emails are much more
interesting than ones that used to flood my box from chainreaction or
performance bikes.Sometimes it's like a small pdf zine.

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2018-12-11 Thread phil k
The tires are made by Panaracer, and these tires are made by hand - which
may explain why there is a slight difference in weight, yet crafted very
carefully.

The RTPs are some of my favorite tires, if only they made more bikes that
fit them. I would get the SC 14s, as the tires on 23mm outside width rims
measure around 50mm.

[RBW] Re: long reach calipers in the wet?

2018-12-04 Thread phil k
Eric,

I've found Tektro 559's to be suboptimal for 650b conversions, mostly
because they had to be at the bottom of the slot to make it work. I believe
Tektro 559s on a bike like the Hilsen with 65mm brake reach will feel much
better.

Even still, you can put Paul Racers on these, and they will feel excellent.
I had the caliper Hillborne and Cheviot with Racers and they felt great
braking in the wet.

[RBW] Re: Things I wish Rivendell still sold..

2018-11-27 Thread phil k
Thanks Bill,

The reason I was looking for a smaller version of Huge Rosco MTN Mixte were
precisely 4 (more aesthetic) reasons:

1.) Uses Hunq fork instead of Joe fork for larger tires
2.) The Hunq fork is can fit the Nitto 32f mini front rack which i already
have
3.) The seat stay cluster is much nicer on the HRMM
4.) I like the color better of the HRMM

Till then, I'm probably going to keep my eyes peeled for the
yellowish-green CLEM L. Or wait to see what Riv puts out next.

[RBW] Re: Consumer Reports: Rivendell edition

2018-11-26 Thread phil k
Thanks Justin. I've always received good customer service from Riv. I've
gotten some stuff from them 2 days later, and I'm on the east coast. In the
age of AmazonPrime, that's not too shabby!

Not to mention, I called Grant once trying to decide between a Joe
Appaloosa and Clem. He said he had too many words to express over the
phone, and to leave my email address and he would send a follow up. I
didn't think much of it, but later that night, he wrote a nice, long and
thorough email trying to help me discern the differences I might like from
each model. Of course I hemmed and hawed, and he was patient with me the
whole way. I decided to order the Appaloosa, and he saw my address and
quickly put my order in with Gravel and Grind (the closest dealers at the
time).

[RBW] Re: Homer and Sam $100 price difference

2018-11-23 Thread phil k
Not only cost of materials but cost of time may be associated. The Hilsen
are relatively the same frame as it was a few years ago, just canti
provisions. However, the MIT Homer's have not been around. So there must've
been a lot of time associated with Riv designing in the new geometry, then
the time it cost them to go back and forth with the factory to get it set
the way they like it.

Daniel, not poor form at all.

The Breezer Uptown is a great bike for someone who is starting to look into
bicycling. Who knows, they may get into bicycling and happen upon "Just
Ride" and find it good reading. Next thing you know they may grab a
Rivendell or two. :)

[RBW] Re: Coverting a Rivendell to Lower Trail

2018-10-29 Thread phil k
IRRC he loved low trail. He put low trail forks on his hunq and his
atlantis. He sold his Hunq, and he ended up getting a custom from Steve Rex
based off the low trail atlantis for more integrated bike, and to try
compass centerpulls.

I haven't seen him on the boards in a bit though.

[RBW] Re: Help me build my Roadeo, Part 2, CRANKSET

2018-10-25 Thread phil k
David, I use the Rivendell Silver cranks which have a high end of 44 and
low of 26. I never really need too low. I think a 44/30 would be good. I
use a 11-32 cassette.

If I were you, I'd check out the Carmina cranks. They look very good,
silver, and have a wide range of chainring options.
