Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-30 Thread scott minor

I've been happy with a 120mm lugged stem w Orthos on my 62cm Atlantis.
Sometimes when I'm jumping on the bike quickly I get the feeling my bars
just slipped downward but actually they just flexed! So the stem is
grabbing pretty well to not slip in this scenario. The stem has pronounced
rigidity as well so the flex is limited to the bars. I'd think the Ritchey
force would behave the same way, which in my view is a pretty nice balance
when it comes to Orthos.

 - Tallux 12cm

Will the 110 Faceplater be too short?

Re: [RBW] Re: Alternatives to Snoqualmie Pass?

2023-08-20 Thread scott minor
I've been riding Snoqualnie Pass standard casings tubeless on my Homer with
nary a flat until recently, and after the 3rd flat this summer I have
retired them. They had a good life but now seem too worn to keep going
reliably. The rear eventually stretches a couple mm's in width over time
which last year prompted a front/rear flip, but now both are stretched
which might just be the tell tale sign they are done.

Currently riding 38mm Gravel King SS (lighter than SK) in preparation for
fender season (52mm fender max w center pull brakes) instead of Barlow
pass, just to try them out. I like them so far! but already thinking I'll
get another set of Snoqualmies next summer when the fenders come back off.
There's just nothing else like them that I have found... They have just
the right amount of air volume for my size (over 200 lbs) and suit the
pressure I like to ride (44 psi), are very fast and quiet. Might be my
favorite tire for all around riding.

Some cat hair and dust from sitting around, I'll lint roll them before
shipping out, otherwise they're pretty much perfect condition.

but suspect it will be different. Specifically, I'd supect it to have a
higher bottom bracket than the homer, to accommodate those who want to use
 it as a fixie.

The Quickbeam had a higher BB, and I can't help wonder if that's the
thing that made it's ride quality so magic and so unique compared to other
contemporary models. (That was my riv era, so I also have a ram and a
saluki and, as similar as they are on paper, they just feel totally
 different.)

My newer rivs are the long, hilli bike type (susie/clem) instead of the
road type. Because those are what I prefer most of the time is why I was
excited about the first Roaduno concept /prototype. But, since it's now
different, I just can't imagine it being less than a improvement to the
 QB/SO.

Like most, I tired of the single speed limitations, and have spent
years planning to add gears to my QB - via IGH in my case. This is
 despite
owning the Saluki and Ram. It's just such a good ride, I can't imagine
getting rid of it. The long winded point of this is that i totally
understand the addition of features for adding gears. If the bike ends up
being a "keeper " most are going to get there eventually.

[RBW] Re: Fendering My Atlantis

2023-01-12 Thread scott minor
I have a set of smooth 74's in my shop for another bike (not yet fitted)
and holding them up to my Atlantis, they don't fit without cutting and
heavily dimpling the fenders to fit between seat stays, also fork blades,
and remove fender material around the chain stays. Not for the faint of
heart but looks possible with patience and proper jigs for setting the
dimples just right. There's little question that the fenders will fit over
your tires, but on an Atlantis, it will take some work. The problem I
would worry about is this, by the time you dimple the fender enough to fit,
you may have lost your clearance around the tire at those points. If you
remove metal at those edges where it is too tight then the structure of the
fender is seriously compromised. I'd go with a smooth 62 fender and 50mm
tire on Atlantis and save the 74's w 2.25 tires for a bike with more
clearance (like a Clem).

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread scott minor
If you like the reach with 9cm stem, I would just swap out the 48's for the
54's.. not a huge difference in width (1 inch per side?). In fact, I just
made this exact switch about a month ago on my 65cm Homer and kept the same
stem with no ill effects. I think this 54 noodle bar strikes a real sweet
spot for taller riders like myself who don't necessarily need the full-on
wide wide options that have become so popular.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Rack Attachment

I have an older Nitto Campee with those same tabs.. I had the same
interference so I cut them off neatly several years ago and do still have
them in case they ever need to be tacked back on.. but I doubt I'll ever
need to do that. I have sackville panniers (don't need the tabs) and some
80's LL Bean panniers (also don't need the tabs). Also, there is a closed
loop near the bottom of the rack that would serve the same purpose for
hooking a strap, should the need ever arise..

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your biggest tire on AH Hilsen?

2022-06-17 Thread scott minor
I have been riding RH 700 x 44 Snoqualmie pass tires on my Waterford AHH
for a couple years now when not running fenders.. (riding 700 x 38 with
fenders). The extra cush from the 44's is really nice for off-pavement,
(prob worth noting I'm a bigger rider, 220 lbs on a 67cm frame) but I
prefer 38mm tires when riding on the road, they are more connected on fast
sweeping turns. I had Dyads for years and now Pacenti Brevets which are
tubeless, unlike the Dyads. After reading about Ken's experience w Dyads
I'm curious and will inspect my Dyads for cracking.. they are quite old and
have the 'made in Australia' sticker on them still. They have survived a
long life of grit and dirt without incident.

One thing I notice about these particular RH standard (not ultralight) 44mm
tires on AHH is the rear fits with ample clearance when the tire is new but
after a while will swell slightly with wear, reducing clearance but not to
the point of rubbing the chain stays. It does get close though. A swap
with the front tire at the point evens things back out.

Re: [RBW] Re: Inspiring Clem Smith Jr L builds!!

2021-11-04 Thread scott minor
Hugh,

Thanks, the gold Motolites are a tricky color but I think they go well with
the metallic chameleon green. I had a 60cm Cheviot in that color about 5
years ago and loved it then but always felt the bike was a tad small so was
thrilled to find this 64cm Clem L in the same color from a fellow tall list
member. The bars came with the bike, they are the 'wrong angle' Bosco
bullmoose which I like a lot w this Clem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Widest tire fit on Homer Hilsen?

2021-02-02 Thread scott minor
My size 67 AHH fits Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass tires (700 x 44) just fine.
I did notice that after many miles the rear tire grew a little in size due
to slightly higher PSI and greater load than the front, and became a
tighter fit between the chain stays, so at that point I swapped the front
and rear tires with each other and all good clearance-wise until they are
worn out completely. Currently running Hurricane Ridge 700 x 42 knobbies
and really loving them. The size and fit of 700 x 42 knobbies on the AHH
really feels dialed in.

Thanks Patrick,

Tires are RH hurricane ridge endurance compound. Great tires, if a little
heavy compared to the Barlow pass I usually run on this bike. Crankset is
VO. I was reluctant to buy it but very glad I did. It has exceeded my
expectations.

To answer your more personal questions, I am a working expat from the US.
My wife is English/Greek and we enjoy our life in Greece. We are both

yes I recall now that those are to be Nobilette built bikes offered as

Reid, To be more specific, the custom replacing the Homer is a Brevet, out of
Bourgogne, France.

Also, just to assure any interested parties, though I live in Europe now, my

Tennessee Valley Bicycles in Knoxville. After moving a couple months ago, they
packed up the AHH for me to ship to Europe but since then I have decided to put
that considerable amount of shipping money towards a custom instead.

[RBW] Re: FS: 65cm A Homer Hilsen (Waterford) F/F/HS

2020-05-20 Thread scott minor
Reid, thanks for the good word. I’m living on the other side of the pond now
and getting a custom from a small builder in France who is semi-local.

John, I’m not sure of the year but determined that it’s a waterford frame at
one point, and probably an early-ish one seeing how it has a single top tube,
not double like the more recent ones from waterford. There’s some useful sales
literature on the cyclofiend site and the geometry of this frame matches those
specs. My PBH is 95, saddle height is 84cm.

[RBW] Friction Shifting 9-10s Question

2020-04-28 Thread scott minor
I’m running 1 x 10 friction on my Clem H with a clutch derailleur and wolftooth
chainring (38t) and feel like it’s the quietest, smoothest shifting I’ve ever
had. I paid close attention to centering the chain line, and had to experiment
w a couple BB’s before finding it. Maybe that effort is what makes the
difference, maybe it’s the clutch. Either way, even w the longer Clem chain, I
find it quieter and smoother than the 2x9 drivetrains on my other bikes.

Very helpful! Thank you, Mike, and James. After seeing these photos, I'm

way, these shots certainly satisfy my curiosity.. and that is to say, the
62 looks good! -Scott

[RBW] 62cm MIT Atlantis photos anywhere?

2020-04-15 Thread scott minor
Does anyone have a photo they can post? I can't detect one on the Riv site
or google images and curious what a 62 actually looks like. Seems like all
the arch tube examples on the net are 59's. There are 2 different arch
tube side profile shots on the current Riv Atlantis page but they appear to
be 2 different pictures of the same sized frame. A full build picture
would be ideal but frameset pic is better than nothing.

thanks!

[RBW] Homer x Rene Herse

2020-03-22 Thread scott minor
I ran Snoqualmie 44’s on my Homer (pre MIT) and noticed that as the tires
expanded with mileage, the rear got very tight but never rubbed. I’m back on
Barlow pass 38’s now, mainly because it has been so wet in the southeast that I
had to put fenders back on. But when this wet season lets up I’ll go back to
the Snoqualmies. I did notice the rear tire expanded more quickly than the
front, probably due to carrying more weight, so I marked which was which and
will reverse them when they go back on. Plenty of room in the front, btw.

I’m running a similar setup on a 59 Clem with large fluted VO fenders and
tubeless Cazadero 50mm tires. The tires pick up small pebbles sometimes which
makes a small tinking sound (I prefer silence) but other than that I’m very
happy w the setup. Super solid feel and a joy to ride.

[RBW] Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-06 Thread scott minor
Great topic! As a tall guy with a 95cm PBH, I LOVE the new found comfort of
riding a longer bike. Finally, there are a few bikes that are tall enough for
me, and proportionally not too steep or too short feeling. My first
experience with longer chainstays was with a 60cm Cheviot that I originally
purchased for my wife but in the end became my everyday commuter for a few
years. It felt like a breakthrough in comfort, even coming from a 62 Hunq but
over time the Chev felt a tad small (low) for me and sure enough my PBH is 1cm
past the recommended fit range. Last year I got a wide-Bosco'd 59cm Clem H
with full racks and fenders for everyday use. It has a longer top tube, longer
chainstays and is a bit taller compared to the Cheviot and is easily the most
well-balanced and comfortable bike I have ever ridden, which is saying a lot
coming from a Hunq and Chev. My Clem riding has led me to have much more
interest in other LWB models, especially the newer Homer and Gus, despite the
'odd' (by traditional standards) appearance of these stretched out frames.

2019-10-24 Thread scott minor
Joe, the cranks are old 7410 Dura Ace that I had in the bin. I got a
wolftooth 40T chainring for it, and already loving the combo of that chainring
w a clutch derailleur, especially with that much chain length! The chain runs
smooth and sticks like glue. The stiff spring of the clutch makes taking the
wheel on/off a bit of a struggle, need a strong third arm to hold the rear mech
out of the way.. but hopefully will find a trick for that. Also getting a
very useable chainline w a 107mm BB spindle I already had.
cheers, -scott

[RBW] 60 Cheviot complete

2019-05-01 Thread scott minor
It pains me to part with this bike but I must as I am moving countries in a
couple months and only have room to keep one bike.

I bought the Chev frame/fork new from Riv in ‘17, Rich built the wheelset w a
Shutter Precision generator hub in front, Deore rear. The rest of the bits I
either had already or added as the setup evolved. It has Billie bars with a
Simworks stem that’s nice and sturdy. IRD Stem-mounted Silver shifters
(friction) and Diacompe brakes. Tires are Soma Supple Vitesse 700x48, super
plush and fast! The Tektro sidepulls that were originally on the bike didn’t
leave much room for clearance with these tires so I put on some long reach
Diacompe center pulls from Riv, used the plastic inserts that let you run
nutted brakes on a recessed frame, and they have worked out great! They stop
well, don’t squeal, and have lots of clearance. Drivetrain is standard Sugino
triple crankset from Riv, IRD Alpina front derailleur, and Sun XCD rear. 11-32
9 speed.

Items pictured but NOT included in sale are the following: B17 saddle, saddle
bag, water bottle cage.

Aside from those things the bike comes complete as pictured here

2018-09-20 Thread scott minor
I’ve been running marathon 700 x 38 on my cheviot for some time, ultra smooth
riding. But my wife’s enthusiasm w her 650b x 48 panaracers got me curious
about extra cush so I’m trying out some Soma Vitesee 700 x 48 which are lighter
and more pliable than the marathons. I’m really enjoying the speed and feel of
the Somas in general. The one thing I immediately miss about the Marathons
though, and being a sound sensitive person (I’m a recording engineer), is the
s i l e n c e of the Marathons. The 48’s are louder but somehow feel faster.
I’ll give it some time but I’m now trying to get a feel for how important it is
to me to have a quiet tire. lightness and ease vs silence, to me that’s a
tough one.

[RBW] Re: Billie Bars?

2018-08-05 Thread scott minor
I went from albatross to billies on my 60cm chev and now that I’ve ridden it
for a couple months (road/path) have to say I prefer the roominess of the
billies, and also the more angled hand position when back on the grips. The
billies put your hand/wrist less thumb-forward than the albas which works well
for my and my fussy AC joints. I also changed the stem from 11cm w albatross
to 12cm w billies. I do love albatross bars though, been riding them for more
than a decade and will keep that cockpit for another bike someday. I also went
from bar-ends on the albas to stem shifters w the billies. A local hunq rider
friend likened the stem shifter setup to pre-ripped jeans, haha! too funny. i
get it but the cleaner bars and ‘easy enough’ stem-shifting is working for me
on this bike. But mostly, being 6’4” (95 pbh) on a 60 chev, I’m enjoying the
extra room of the billies!

[RBW] FS: 62cm Hunqapillar complete

2018-03-13 Thread scott minor
Hello everyone,

I've decided to part with my Hunqapillar after owning it for a couple years
now. It simply doesn't get ridden enough since I got a Cheviot, which
between that and an Ocean Air Rambler cover my bases well enough. I should
be so lucky. Seems a bit decadent to have this beautiful bike leaning in
the corner. I bought it used from Ant Ritchey a couple winters ago and
it's pretty much in the same nick it was in when I got it. It's a lovely
ride.

As for details, drive train is standard Sugino triple with 12-32 9 speed
cassette, Paul canti brakes w kool-stop salmon pads, Paul levers, Paul
funky monkey brake stop, IRD thumb shifters, MAP Ahearne bar (the wider
one), 110mm tallux stem, nitto front rack. Wheels are Velocity rear /
Shutter Precision gen hub front w Atlas rims and 2.1 Thunder Burts. Tires
have less than 250 mi on them and roll beautifully.

asking 2250 complete + bikeflight shipping or local pickup

[RBW] Re: Will the Ocean Air Cycles Erlen Bag Support work w/ my Nitto seat post?

2017-04-09 Thread scott minor
Hi John,

I really like the Erlen, the design couldn't be more boiled down, and it's
super solid. I have an Ocean Air Rambler as well (that I love) so perhaps
I'm predisposed to find favor in the stuff Rob is putting out there.

I have an Erlen here I'd be happy to measure. What's the length of the
seat rail clamp on your seat post?

[RBW] FS: Sam Hillborne 62cm Black and Cream

2017-01-07 Thread scott minor
I purchased this sam from Rivendell in Jan '16 and have recently moved most
of its parts over to a hunqapillar. Alas, after much deliberation I have
now decided to part with it. It's pictured with Tektro long reach brakes
which I'm happy to include. Also includes headset originally installed by
Riv. Overall the frame is in excellent shape and looks almost new. Asking
$975
