Johnny, it is working great. At first I was a bit concerned because the steerer
tube was cut shorter than my other bikes but no problem, bars are high enough
for sure. You did me right, thank you.

I'd be interested to hear opinions from anyone who has ridden Compass EL
models both tubed and un-tubed; is there a big difference? I expect that
there will be less difference between tubed and tubeless with very supple
tires, assuming of course the use of good tubes. But I may be wrong. I know
that 559 X 1.35 Kojaks rode noticeably smoother and, to my senses, faster,
without tubes than with, tho' I abandoned the tubeless setup for fear of
blowouts as the tires are not designed to be used sans tubes (it was only
air pressure that kept the beads in place).

>From my experience with the extremely light Compass Elk Pass, as well as
with tubeless on the Matthews, I don't find that I get more flats with
tubes than without, using Orange Seal in both. Of course, I don't ride the
EPs at pressures lower than, say, 50 psi, compared to half that for the F
Freds on the Matthews.

I've got over 3,600 miles on my first set of Elk Passes (559 X 27-29 or so
actual on 19 and 21 mm rims ); these are 178 gram tires, friends, and I
regularly ride them in our gravely and thorn ridden dirt. 3600 miles on the
rear, and there is still plenty of tread; the front looks almost new --
that is truly amazing. I spent $1K on a dozen tires when they first came
out, thinking I'd have to install new ones after not much more than 1K
miles, but nope ...

[RBW] Saluki Re-Tired

2017-10-03 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Perhaps the better word choice would be 'renewed'... if you are tired of
gushing about Compass tires just skip this post. My Saluki hasn't gotten
all that much love since my acquisition of the Jones Plus in February and
particularly while I was experimenting with the 29x2.35 Schwable 'Big One'
slicks on that frame (also an awesome experience). That coupled with a
rash of flats on two different sets of Parimoto 38mm tires on the Saluki
over the summer and the long days making dyno lighting less of a must have
kept the bike in the garage quite a bit. The parimoto flats are not really
an indictment of those tires but rather a reflection that the Mount Vernon
Trail in vicinity of Reagan Nat'l Airport has had a ton of broken glass on
the trails this year and it's just very hard on any tire. I'm at risk with
the Compass tires as well there but as I'll get into, at least I'm not
going to be slapping $7-10 tube replacements in on a weekly basis.

While I wasn't in any hurry to get rid of the Saluki I wasn't finding a lot
of excuses to ride it and mostly when I would I was nervous about my next
flat and the delay that would incur. Any mechanical doubts about a bike or
car really detract from the use to me. As luck would have it
Chirs(Pondero) and I had been going back and forth about his acquiring my
Bstone MB-5 as a DC town bike for when he is visiting his family here at
the same time that Compass announced that their Babyshoe Pass EL's were now
available in tubeless. It just so happened that the MB-5 sale would
completely cover a new set of compass tires, a set of tire wipers and
another years BQ subscription... or at least close enough! :)

The new BSP EL's locked up pretty easily on my Velocity A23 rims and upon
initial inflation to about 60psi to seat the beads measured a little over
40mm. I'm trying to run them around 25-30psi front and 40-50psi back right
now... I give the ranges because I've been plagued with different readings
from pretty much every gauge I own, a digital one, my floor pump and the
gauge on my compressor all read sometimes wildly different. I have the most
run time with the floor pump so I'm trying to trust that one. the tires
have grown a bit in the 2 weeks they've been on the bike just from my
looking at the fender clearance but I haven't measured them. Ride quality
is superb, not hugely different than how I remember the Hetre's or SBH's
actually and I'm not sure how much the tubeless really matters to the
feel. My main motivation on the tubeless is that I'll have fewer flats and
at least not have to mess with tubes so often. The biggest thing that has
struck me in my rides over the weekend and this week is how quiet they are
on the pavement. Monday morning in the pre-dawn darkness all I could hear
on the bike was the cassette lightly clicking as I flew around Gravelly
Point... a really great feeling.

Time will tell on the durability, obviously any of these light supple tires
compromise on protection from road debris but at least for now I'll
continue to risk it. The result so far is I have ridden the Saluki at
every opportunity since the BSP's were mounted. Couple pictures from
yesterday morning's solo coffee outside including a shot of my B Cyo
Premium headlight in case anyone was curious about that. Short thoughts on
the B are it's a great wide light field, not the absolute brightest but
very good when it's really dark and definitely more than adequate for being
seen.

Oh no, they're long gone, John. Each sale of a bike has its specific story, but
the reality is I go through a lot of bikes (I don't recommend this expensive
habit). I like bicycles as mechanical and artistic objects, and there's a
little voice in my head that often whispers "you only get so many bikes in your

As a youngster, I rode my bike in the courtyard of my apartment building

Thanks for the 2 links. I found the 1st, but not the 2nd. I was hoping
for a RBW write up focusing on the Saluki, but it seems there is none. The
2 links are like A vs B and B vs C, B + Saluki. I remember the write ups
on the AHH (country bike, Honus Wagner) and the Blerliot (known name, nice
link to aviation), but can not recall a Saluki hype. It seems like RBW
was going through a major re-thinking of their direction at the time of the
Saluki

Subtle Differences, really just wanted to know if any exists. I totally
agree with your BLINDFOLD reasoning.

Wild Bill, that made my day. :-) The Bleriot was purported to be the poor

Bill made me spit coffee out my nose. Thanks alot.

The Saluki in question appears to be from early in the run, before tektro made
the rivendell-requested 559 sidepull brake, so it has cantilever brakes.
That, and possibly some different lugs, is a difference.

Normally i like cantis but, in this case, I'm not sure you gain any tire or
fender clearance over the later frames and/or hilsens, and would suspect that
bridges or chainstay width or crown height are the determiners. Perhaps
someone else knows.

Does any one have any links to the RBW literature on the early Saluki's???
looking at the 54cm on Seattle CL, since it is my size.

I know the Saluki's transformed into the 650B AHHs, but there seems to be
subtle differences.

I thought there were links on Cyclofiend's site, but have not located them

trail or bollards on a path) could be problematic if the wheel strikes it.

Kids and dogs moving in a trailer can influence the handling of the bike. It
depends on the weight and how much they're moving around.

 good luck,
 Shoji

[RBW] Saluki - Dog Trailers?

2015-06-03 Thread Kainalu
I have a Surly trailer that could carry a mastiff or two. The pivot point is
set well below the axle, so the trailer's effect handling is minimal. And the
pivot support distributes any stresses to both sides of the rear axle, which
rules. The only tradeoff is weight, it's heavy as sin, but a light bike can
pull it without a problem so long as the rear wheel's sturdy.

[RBW] Saluki With Dog Trailer?

We have a new puppy and taking care of her has impacted my regular bike

I’m exploring the idea of getting a Doggyride trailer to hook to the Saluki to

Has anyone here had experience with this or any other trailer on their bike?

I have used trailers for the last twenty years in some form or another. My
current rig is my Sam pulling a Burley Travoy. This trailer is light and
even when loaded isn't a problem. I love trailers and if I had a dog I
would do the same thing as you. Have fun.

Component glamour shots as I anxiously await my frame. After almost 9

on the trails here is the first of what should be several rapid fire
posts on the build. Everything is ready and waiting so I expect to have
her rolling w/in 24hrs of receipt from the powdercoater.

Today's ride to Port City Brewery in Alexandria on the Bombadil was the
perfect thing to keep my mind occupied though. Great weather all around
here in DC lately and I'm looking forward to getting in several solid
commuting days this week. More soon!

[RBW] Saluki or Bleriot PBH?

2014-02-23 Thread David Stein
Does anyone have any guidelines on sizing Bleriot or Saluki's by PBH? I see
a few pop up for sale and curious what Rivendell's official recommendations
were on PBH sizing when they were available? For reference, I have an 80
PBH, 5'7, average build, 165 lbs (in case anyone is close to that size and
rides one and can speak from experience). Lastly, if anyone is looking at
parting ways with their Saluki/Bleriot/AHH, I may be buying. Thanks!

David,

I am roughly your size and have a matching PBH. I owned a saluki for a while,
and have owned other RIvendell bicycles. I fit best on the 54 saluki / 55

I am happy to give further details about fit and sizing as I experienced it if

[RBW] Saluki Touch Up Paint ??

2013-08-25 Thread Michael Hechmer
At least judging from the pictures on the cyclofiend collection there seem
to have been a variety of Saluki colors over time, and brake styles too.
Mine is gray and I suspect a very early edition, # SA 0011. It has canti
brakes. It could use a little touch up on the BB shell and around the drop
outs. Does anyone know the exact brand color to use.

Here are some pictures but the color seems to vary with the lighting.

[RBW] Saluki at 2200 feet

One of my long time rides takes me up to Smugglers Notch. I've done this 45
mile ride from my home pretty much once a year for the past thirty years
and one of my life goals is to do it for my 70th birthday, 15 months from
now. The climb has 1800 feet of climbing in a 9 mile stretch, but 1000
feet of that comes in the last 3 miles of steady 7-10%, and most of the
rest in the first mile. I'm about 25% slower now than I was at the turn of
the millennium and this time I had to walk up the 75-100 meters of 20%+
grade, but I made it, and am feeling pretty good about that, even though it
seems clear I will need to loose 20 lbs if I want to ride up non stop a
year from now.. Ms Saluki is quite comfortable going back down at 45 mph.

No CD on this bike, but I do ride a 44/30 11-28 on the Rambouillet. This
one is 48/34/26 with a 12/27 cassette. On the Ram the 30/28 allows me to
hold a decent cadence in 7/9 % grades for 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. I'm OK on
short ramps of 15-16 % which are common here, but after that I start to
suffer more than I want to. That one extra gear really helps on these
longer climbs.

[RBW] Saluki stuff

2013-04-09 Thread Bruce Herbitter
The question earlier about Pea Sage Green got me hunting down the actual
color name for the early Saluki (Yellow Olive) but a crawl through old
pages showed up something I missed until now. This little tidbit:
Yes, you can use 700c or (on the centerpull version) mountain bike 26-inch
wheels, but the frame is designed for 650Bs, and the others should be
regarded as life-or-death options for escaping mean cowboys in
middle-of-the-desert saloons, after you flatten their tires and scatter
their horses.

If mine were a center pull model, you can be sure I'd beat a path to the
garage to play musical wheel sets and see how the rides compare. I've
always liked it as a 650B though. Loved it as I toodled on down to City
Hall yesterday to meet the mayor (and talk bike stuff for our little town)
and chained it up to the fence there. In fact, I don't have a 700 wheel
bike at all anymore.

I'm more interested in the 26 honestly.

I'm guessing you'd use short-reach sidepulls with the 700c wheels. It's like
the opposite of a 650B conversion of a late 80's road bike.

[RBW] Saluki Shake Down Ride!

2013-03-26 Thread Michael Hechmer
Today was a major transition day. I trimmed and mounted the bedroom doors,
thus bringing an end to a renovation project that has occupied me since new
years; cleaned my shop; put in an order for vegetable seeds; and took the
new to me Saluki for an hour and half shake down cruise. Given temps in
the hi 30s, I skipped the screaming down hill test.

It is with very mixed emotions that I have to report that this bike is in
much better condition than I am!

The bike came to me with the 600 HS, PW bottom bracket, Riv wheels Pari
Moto tires, Mafac levers, as well as a beautiful, classic Specialized
crank, VO AL. fenders and racks Unfortunately, I needed to replace the
Nitto Pearl stem with something shorter and decided to try a Mark's Bar. (
the jury is still out on the latter) I swapped out a nice pair of classic
pedals for my White Ind Bruce Gordon clips, replaced a hi polish tektro
brakes with my neo-retros, and Deore detailers for older campy Centaur
Mirage. Early, Selle Anatomica saddle.

As I was headed out, it occurred to me I should take some pics before this
dog rolled in mud. My quick photography doesn't do it justice but the
slide show comes closest to capturing the nice paint job. I think I will
rewrap the bars with something more mellow, in cloth.

https://plus.google.com/photos/110692344592863063357/albums/5859744561306659185?gpinv=AMIXal9g7EErBUEyUYKaPP0wgSM6C9TiKHn9Ni94wEiDyjh8RMWDjfgGWcn720PAA0GPAYPthzVhg3mwJy6o8itISEf6eD3NAZcYRv_LMkVKt8hCyyXWRU0cfem=1authkey=CM-RtYmyvOKvxAE

Next I'm off on a road trip, alas without a bike. Hope to be in St Paul
for a conference by the 11th. Jim, if time permits, I'll come by your shop
and drool on something!

Michael

[RBW] Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question

2013-03-17 Thread Michael Hechmer
I recently bought an almost new Saluki, advertised on this site. There
should have been a bidding war for this bike, but that's another question.
This bike is drop dead gorgeous and I am looking forward to the end of
Mud Season here in Vermont to take it out on the road. Meanwhile I have
been working on a few, unfortunately, necessary changes. The stem / TT
combination is too long for me and unfortunately had to be changed out from
a beautiful Nitto Pearl. That went straight forward.

But the brake rack combination has created some perplexity. The bike
came with a pair of Tektro brakes, identical to the ones RIV sells, except
a high polish finish; and a VO rack
(
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/racks/pass-hunter-front-rack-with-integrated-decaleur.html

) which mounts through the canti brakes. It also has a set of VO AL
fenders which are bolted to the fenders.

I wanted to swap the brakes for my Neo Retros, which first required a new
mounting bolt, which I obtained from Pauls. But when I mounted them on the
bile I found that the rack no longer mated with the fender. Apparently the
Paul bolt is beefier and longer than the VO version. As a result the rack
sits about an inch or more above the fenders.

This presents me with some options

A: Can I bend the rack to fit? This doesn't look easy.
B: Ignore the problem and the connection between the rack and front
fender.
C: Sell the rack and use an M12 mounted to the fork braise ons, which
will probably create a different contact point on the fender.
  D: Abandon the Pauls brakes.

Help wanted.

Michael

[RBW] Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question

2013-03-17 Thread William
I would advise ditching the Paul brakes. The Tektros are fine and will play
nice with the rack. If you have mid fork braze ons so that a Nitto Mini Front
would fit, then that could present an option, but an M12 won't be any better on
Paul brakes than that VO is. Paul has way too much stack up.

Pea Sage Green 58cm 650b sidepull/centerpull Saluki 3 water bottle making
it a Waterford built frameset, correct me if I'm wrong on that one. I'm the
original owner and purchased it from The CountryBbike Shop in Ohio.
Wonderful riding bike! It does have a number of paint chips, scratches from
usage. It also has a ding/dent around 4-5mm long on the top tube. I rode
it like this for around a year. It has been framed saved from the getgo a
few times and the chips covered w. clear nail polish. Alot of the
scratches/chips will be hidden once the bike is a assembled. Frame and
fork. Email me off list for pictures. Asking $775.00 plus actual shipping.

[RBW] Saluki

2012-12-05 Thread SeanMac
I have noticed several Salukis for sale recently on ebay. I know that this
bike was produced before the Bleriot, but I have had a somewhat difficult
time finding information about it on the web. I am hoping that a list
member or three might be able to shed some light on this bike for me.

I'm in the market for a bike for longer rides and perhaps some short
touring - Erie Canal, C O Trail, etc. I've had my eyes on a Sam for some
time, but have not yet pulled the trigger (might on the all-blue Sam - what
a deal). Would a Saluki be well-suited for this kind of riding or is it
really designed as a country bike / credit card tourer / rambler / century
ride bike?

How would the Saluki compare to a Homer?

I can't seem to find a chart that matches PBH to Saluki sizing. Should I
simply use the general chart on the Riv site, matching the 650b section to
my height to choose the correct Saluki?

Thanks,

Sean

[RBW] Saluki on a brevet

2011-11-07 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Rode a Riv Saluki on Saturday. Despite being too windy out at times, it was
a great day to ride. Mix of flats and hills and my bike and Hillborne that
showed up, but due a phone call from the maternity ward, did not ride were
the only 650B reps out there. I've had Grand Bois Oursons on the bike since
I bought them for a 3 day solo tour in '09. Despite Jan moving to what he
feels is a smoother tire, I've been very happy with these and when they
finally wear out, I have a back up set to put on. The bike was always
comfy, regardless of road surface and stable enough to ride no hands (no
stunt riding. Sitting all the way upright to stretch my back at intervals)
with a STUFFED front rack bag too.

Some take-aways for me from the ride:

The Xpack lithium cell recharger will power up your Garmin and your cell
phone and your whatever and still have plenty to spare before it needs
recharging. They are on sale (Reg price is $44.99) at Office Depot for
about $15. Comes with an assortment of plug ends to suit Apple, Blackberry,
etc. You can order others as needed. The size of a pocket calculator.

Keen Kelonas are outstanding riding shoes on Grip King pedals. I tried them
because I love the keen sandals in the summer. Mine are roomy enough for
thicker wool socks and with a big toe box there is room for air to
circulate, so sweat evaporates away. They are light, but the leather
provides defense against cold wind. Of course, people like Kieen because
they are comfy to wear as well.

A $6 highway worker DOT vest is a great low cost option for your visibility
needs. Very bright, and less $ than a cycling webstore. Check your local
industrial supply place. I also picked up a pair of over my glasses UV
treated tinted safety glasses. They provide excellent eye protection from
debris and stay put on your head just fine. Very light and again, about $6.
Lastly, I bought 2' of DOT spec reflective tape and put pieces of it here
and there.

Couple of pictures here:

2010-10-03 Thread nathan spindel
Yesterday at the RBW garage sale I picked up a 50cm 650B Saluki frame.
I'm going to build it up as a road bike / occasional light S24O
hauler. The rider will be a lightweight 5'5 lady, so it'll be able to
carry a 10-20 lb load just fine.

I have much of the build planned out (Noodles w/ bar-ends, XD2, B-17,
rear rack) but haven't decided on:

 1. brakes (Silvers or Dia-Compe's or Paul center-pulls?)
 2. wheels (Rich-built Synergy 32h 105?)
 3. tires (Soma Xpress 38? Pari-Moto? CdlV?)

What would you suggest for those components, given the uses above?
Thanks for your advice!

2010-10-03 Thread cyclotourist
1 - Brakes: Love the silvers. Some complain of too much flex, but I found
them to be perfect.
2 - Wheels: find a used set of the Synergy/Deore wheels that QBP sold.
3 -Tires: I'd get some Hetres.

Paul center pulls are phenomenal brakes. They're also expensive, but in
my opinion worth it.

  3. tires (Soma Xpress 38? Pari-Moto? CdlV?)

Much depends here on your goals, and how you intend to use the bike.
CdlVs last a very long time, are quite sturdy and hold up well on gravel
and in commuting service, and they're quite inexpensive. They do make
noise, and some people feel they squirm in hard cornering, and they
aren't the fastest rolling 650B tires.

Pari Motos are light, fast, and corner extremely well. They're also
fairly expensive and they wear much faster than either Hetres or CdlVs
(I just replaced my back tire at 1650 miles). I've found them quite
robust. Peter Weigle used them on the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonnee and
on other dirt road rides near his shop, and finds they hold up well on
gravel.

Hetres will fit - at least, they fit my 60cm Saluki, but in order to fit
the 58mm fender between the chainstays I had to cut it down. Hetres are
absolutely phenomenal on gravel. There's so much cushion and so much
floatation. It gives you a tremendous sense of comfort and control.
Hetres are also long-wearing. They do have thin sidewalls, and some
people have found the sidewalls to be fragile and easily cut; this seems
to depend on what the geology's like where you ride. Here in Northern
Virginia, the sidewalls hold up very well. They're not cheap, but they
will last a long time, and for a tire that long wearing they're very
fast-rolling, too.

Re: [RBW] Saluki build decisions

2010-10-03 Thread Rob Harrison

 1. brakes (Silvers or Dia-Compe's or Paul center-pulls?)

I have Paul centerpulls on my Saluki. I'm *very* happy with them, though I
can't compare them, not having ridden the others.

 2. wheels (Rich-built Synergy 32h 105?)

The 36H Synergy Peter White-built wheels I have are tight and strong. I'm the
third owner of the bike, so they must be seven or eight years old. Also very
happy with the SON20 generator hub and White M1.5 cassette rear hub, though I
doubt I could afford those starting from scratch.

 3. tires (Soma Xpress 38? Pari-Moto? CdlV?)

In the short time (six months) I've had my Saluki I've tried Pari-Motos, white
Hetres and Marathons. (Slightly used tires often come up on the list for
cheap!) Pari-Motos ride the nicest by far. Hetres were fine, but I switched to
Marathons when I put fenders on for the winter, and haven't put the Hetres back
on to see if they'll fit under my Berthoud composite fenders. The Marathons
seem hardier than the others (though I have had one flat already), but feel
wooden compared to the Pari-Motos, and I have less confidence carrying speed
through corners. Maybe it's the squeaky sound they make when pushed. When the
Marathons wear out (in several years...) I'll probably get some Marathon
Supremes (extra-super-flat-proof) for the rainy season commute and off-pavement
excursions, and stick with Pari-Motos for summer long rides.

Jason -

Current road conditions would be useless right now given that it's
May, and you're going in July. :-)

Use Krebs maps, and AC maps. They're both good for different reasons.
Krebs are the best, though. The Pacific Coast book is ok.

Here are pics of my tour on that route, on my Saluki:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/collections/72157606892342672/

North of Arcata, use the Hammond Trail. Ask if you can't find it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2735946381/in/set-72157606560978936/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2735929537/in/set-72157606560978936/

Regarding Anne's advice, the Lost Coast detour is amazingly beautiful,
and it's also some of the hardest/hilliest riding you'll ever do. It
is epic. It adds an entire day to the route; it's that hilly. And with
loaded bikes, it goes by beautifully, painfully, and slowly.

When you're near Benbow, camp there. In July it'll be hot, and the Eel
River will provide heaven at the end of that day.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2744653044/in/set-72157606613356425/

Eat as many berries as you can. They're amazing, and everywhere! There
are tons of breweries along the route. For what that's worth. Our tour
was actually a tour of the coastal breweries...

Good luck, and have fun on that tour. It's some of the prettiest
riding anywhere on the planet!

Franklyn - don't ride south to north. You'll be miserable from the
howling wind, and you'll be on the wrong side of the road for the good
views. :-)

It's so worth it, and SO STEEP. When you start the first climb out of
Ferndale, you think, wow, this is steep. But then when you reach the
top, and look far far down to the base of the second long climb, you
can't believe someone put a road there. It looks like it goes straight
up. It looks like someone glued asphalt on a cliff. Highway 1 was
routed inland in that section for good reason.

Then, all too quickly because the descent is scarily steep too, so
steep you can't see the road beneath you and it looks like you're
about to ride off a cliff into the Pacific 2000 feet below, you reach
the base of that climb. You hope your initial impressions were wrong.

Oh no. They weren't. The road looks like a cliff because it is a
cliff. Take a deep breath. Get in your lowest gear. Wish you had a
gear twice as low. Begin climbing. Hope you don't tip over.

Re: [RBW] Saluki/Atlantis summer tour advice

2010-05-07 Thread Anne Paulson
It's not *that* short.

You have the bikes for it, so take the wonderful Unknown Coast
alternate route from Ferndale.
(Google Maps shows that part of that route, Mattole Road on the coast,
is fifty feet out at sea. It isn't.) Another superior (but tough)
alternate route is King Ridge Road just north of the Russian River-
you head up (and I do mean up) from Stewarts Point to Tin Barn Road,
then head south along the ridge. Bring plenty of water.

Most people who do that ride use The Book, Bicycling the Pacific
Coast, by Kirkendall. It's good, but the Adventure Cycling route is
better. For example, north of Arcata, Kirkendall routes you on the
freeway while Adventure Cycling puts you on local streets. South of
Arcata, both of those routes put the cyclist on busy Highway 101 to
Eureka. Local cyclists told me they preferred to go counterclockwise
around the bay on highway 255.

One of the best parts of riding the Pacific is the other cyclists you
meet along the way and in the campgrounds. Have fun!

Still wondering how many Salukis were produced

The check is in the mail to the seller, so I expect I will be

[RBW] Saluki History + Provenance

2010-05-03 Thread Rob Harrison
If all goes well it appears I may soon become an official member of
the RBW Owners Bunch. (!!!) I'm curious about the origins and history
of the Saluki. Can anyone fill me in?

For example...

• When did the model debut? Was it the first Riv bike designed for 650b?
• Where were they made? By whom?
• How many were made?
• Did colors vary by model year, or was there a stock range? What were
the colors? (I've seen mainly orange and butterscotch in the larger
sizes, but there is quite a range of colors of smaller sizes still on
the riv site.)
• It's not currently in the catalog. When did production stop? Will
they be back? (I heard a rumor of a possible rotation with the A.H.H.?)

• Anyone have a pdf of the original brochure or design brief?

Thank you!

Hey there Rob -

Welcome to the bunch.

I never put together a Saluki-specific page yet -

http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw

But, there wasn't too much in terms of separate printed material that I came
across. There were definitely announcements in the Reader. It was the first
650B/584 bicycle that they produced. The production was not so much
stopped as rolled into the Hilsen - the 650B/584 version is pretty similar
if not identical. Except for the name and headbadge, of course.

I'm kind of under the gun on a project early this week, but will dig through

RE: [RBW] Saluki History + Provenance

2010-05-03 Thread Frederick, Steve
The Saluki was introduced in late 2003 or early 2004. They were produced by
Toyo in Japan, same as the Rambouillet, and the first batch was offered in
either green or silver. Custom paint options were offered through a painter
local to Rivendell for an upcharge, which accounts for most of the other colors
you see. the Caramel was a custom color I asked for and Grant created for my
Saluki from the first batch, and which he liked well enough to make it the
stock option for future frame runs. (I asked for a Harvest Gold, like some
Riv customs but a richer tone with more brown)

As far as I know, the Saluki was the first production 650b-wheeled frame
offered in the U.S. since a few mountain bikes from Raleigh and Schwinn in the
80's.

They were initially offered with either NOS (reintroduced?) DiaCompe centerpull
brakes or cantis, and when the Tektro super-long reach sidepulls were
introduced, Grant designed a frame to go with them and fitted the smaller
frames with 650b, the larger with 700c. Saluki production was rolled into this
new frame.

Re: [RBW] Saluki History + Provenance

2010-05-03 Thread Gino Zahnd
What Jim said. And http://is.gd/bSxAZ

There was also the pewter color in addition to what Steve listed.

They aren't coming back as a Saluki. Production never stopped though -
they're now the AHH in smaller sizes.

I don't think there was ever a brochure, and yep, late 2004 or early
2005 is when the Saluki dropped.

 For example...

 • When did the model debut? Was it the first Riv bike designed for 650b?
 • Where were they made? By whom?
 • How many were made?
 • Did colors vary by model year, or was there a stock range? What were the
colors? (I've seen mainly orange and butterscotch in the larger sizes, but
there is quite a range of colors of smaller sizes still on the riv site.)

I misspoke(typed) the dates--late '04-early -05 is correct. (I got mine in

Saluki production was rolled into this
new frame.

Just to add to all the good info so far, you can use the time travel portal
(waybackmachine archive) and look it up on the early 2005 RBW website.

http://web.archive.org/web/20050207221216/www.rivbike.com/html/bikes_saluki.html

Original green was yellow olive You could also get a pewter headbadge for an
addition $25.

Tailwinds!

That's the color I referred to as what's in the baby's diaper.

[RBW] Saluki for sale

2009-09-07 Thread John Ferguson

Hi all,

Having experienced the joys of Toei (and Weigle) it is with some
regret that I must part with my Saluki. It's a wonderful bike (and the
components are amazing) but it's not as well suited to the type of
riding I do as the Toei. Plus I have *too many bikes.*

Before I'm excommunicated, I'd like to say thank you to all of you who
helped me build the bike!

All the details are here:

[RBW] Saluki and Big Wood Hetre

2009-03-10 Thread Gino Zahnd

Tonight I put a pair of 650 x 42B Grand Bois Hetres on my
canti-Saluki. I've heard great things about them, the most important
of which is that they don't get flats like the ballet-slipper-like
Grand Bois Cypres. I've also read and heard first hand accounts that
the Hetre is quite long-lived. I'm skeptical right now, still. I
haven't ridden them, except up the road in front of my house and back.

A few things to note:
- The canti-luki easily, with no fiddling or rigging whatsoever,
swallows the Hetre tire with Honjo fenders.
- These tires, for a road-ish bike, look huge. They're pluffy, silent,
and seem like they'll be very comfortable.
- My current Honjos are 45mm, which I've used with CDLV tires until
this point. If I end up liking this tire size and durability, I'll
move up to the 50mm, which will still easily fit.

The biggest thing I've noticed in the one-whole-minute riding the
Hetre is how quiet this tire is compared to the squibbly CDLV. I like
that tire. I've toured on it, camped on it, I commute/run errands on
it almost every day, and it's a good, durable tire. It isn't fast, and
boy, is it loud! But for the price, you really can't beat it, and
it's still the go-to tire on my daily driver.

I'll report back after a few hundred miles on the Large Beech Wood.
