This writeup might be helpful as it gives info on patching the RSS
and interfacing an external controller.

You can get the functionality of a PL R100 by taking your DPL R100
and programming it as a carrier squelch unit then add an external
tone decoder (such as a TS32) to it. An external controller such as
a low-end NHRC, ICS, Scom 5K etc could combine the COR and
tone decode signals in whatever mode you want.

If you need someone to set yours up let me know.

I just bought an R100 and want to play with it on the Ham band - It is supposed
to come with the programming software but no cable (I can build one - found the
schematic already). This repeater is DPL - does anyone have a junk R100 PL
that a guy might be able to the RX controller (IC or board) out of fairly
cheap? From the manual it looks like the IC and a couple cap changes are all
that would be needed. I'm not sure what needs to be done to get this to program
out of band, either - has anyone done this that might be willing to explain the
process to me? Didn't see too many posts about these when I searched.

I'm told there is one for specific to the receiver programming.

Does anyone know the generic part number for that eeprom? Do

replacement eeproms from Motorhead (Motorola) come with some

Would you know a source for that eeprom..?

You will have to retune the steering line voltage at the test point
marked with a SL on the circuit board.

Contact me off-line and I'll try and find my manual detailing the
voltages and tuning procedure.

After this adjustment is made, the repeater will perform very well down
to at least 440 MHz.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola R100

2008-02-25 Thread n2pdq
Yes you will need to retune the TX vco voltage to lock it on frequency, and
retune the front end filter, and vco, anfd you'll be good to go. The only thing
I would recommend would be to wire in an external controller, and program the
repeater to carrier squelch. So if the external controller fails, you can
swtich to a carrier squelch repeater. As far as performance goes, I have 5 of
them in service as portable emergency ham repeaters for our ARES/RACES group.
They work great. We built them into a 6 space SKG rack case, and all we do is
grab and go. If you have any more questions, shoot me an email. I also have
pictures of the wiring I used for the external controller. We use the Zetron
model 37 max controllers, and work great.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola R100 question

2006-08-13 Thread Kevin Berlen, K9HX

I have done several of these without too much trouble. On the batlabs
site there
is a hack for the R-100 RSS to allow out of band freq's to be entered.
The units I
have done have not required any tuning to operate in the ham band, but
others
report that they have had to.
The TX and RX chassis inside the repeater each use a DB-15 connector to

connect to the outside world. All the signals you will need to interface
an external
controller are available on these connectors. Just disconnect the
existing connectors
and supply and wire your own. Also make returning to the
"stock" configuration
possible at some time in the future. However, the RX audio out of the
receiver
module is not muted by the squelch circuit on this connector. You will
need to
count on your controller to provide this function.
Keep the PA on this machine cool. Probably a good idea to keep a muffin
fan blowing
across it. Good luck with your project and 73,

Tom,
That should all be done with the Motorola rss software for the R100.

Tom,

I have the R100 manual in PDF format on my FTP server at
ftp://n9wys.homeftp.net

You'll be able to download the manual from there. Without knowing what
components were added, it's a bit difficult to troubleshoot via e-mail. :-)

Contact me off list for access - I don't allow anonymous connections into my
ftp server.

I got two questions on the R100. On the board that is attached to the lid,
when you
unlock it and rotate it up, at the top edge, are spots for 3 switches. When
Repeater
Disable is on, the LED on the corner lights up. I presume that that inhibits
the entire
repeater. But there's a spot for PL disable (the switch is missing but there's
evidence
that something was there). If a switch is installed and flipped on, will it
disable the
PL / DPL ?

And, I presume the big connector in the center of that same board is the
connection
for "accessories" like a controller? I'd like to find how to connect something
like an
ID-8 or maybe a NHRC-2 into it, mostly for Part 90 ID. :-)

  Thanks!

Coy,

This is correct - PL >OR< DPL, but not both. The best way to find out what
you have is to read the radio FIRST and go from there... And Shanon is
correct - programming with the RSS is "fun" (his/her description, not mine),
my experience was even WITH the manual. Software is very "kludgy" (my
description).

I have one I tuned down into the ham 70cm band, and it worked just great as
a back-up to my main repeater. I also have another one sitting on the bench
here in the shack - not sure just what I'm going to do with that one just
yet. ;-)

Best luck with yours!

Coy,

The R100 will NOT do both PL and DPL. It comes one or the other. To change
it requires the proprietary processors in the TX and RX to be changed. Also
there are a few components on each that will have to be changed. If it is
the wrong one I suggest you disable the internal PL and use an external
unit. Unless you can find the processors, you have no choice. I have two
R100's. Programming is "fun" without the programming manual. Go to
http://www.batlabs.com and http://www.batlabs.com/r100.html for some info.
Once set up it is a very nice dependable repeater. Search the archive of

Just about any Motorola radio will do PL, and anything
made in the last 10 years or so, if it's
computer-programmed, will do DPL as well. The only
thing that would corrupt the code plug is using the
wrong program on the radio or forcing it to be a
different model radio. Get the right RSS and a good
RIB, and I'm sure it will do DPL and PL just fine.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola R100 project

2004-08-02 Thread Dave Baughn

It will usually program in the Ham band but you will need to realign the
receiver front end and the transmitter PLL. You will need the help of someone
with a programming interface and software to program and with a service monitor
and the book to align. The programming code has to be changed to work
in the ham bands. The code is available on the internet as is the interface
cable.

You may want to add an IDer since the R100 doesn't have one. Also, they
came in several versions with differing output power, squelch (carrier, PL, or
DPL), and control functions.

Good luck with your project.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola R100 - changing PL

2004-05-25 Thread bbedoe

Hi there!

OK, the R100 is either PL or DPL from the factory, not both, and to field change from DPL to PL it is a very hard event ... you need to change some prom that is nearly impossible to get.  I've seen a few of these proms pop up on eBay and sell for $50-$100 each.

If you are lucky and have a PL R100, the tone is changed under the software just after you program in the freq.

The R100 was one of the 1st software programmable radios and the software is simple but a pain to work with.  Like early DOS software you have to learn to understand it's simple command structure because the documentation is sparse to say the least.

One last thing, when you get the software and are using it, make sure you are using a slow, slow, slow computer.  The software is 1980s vintage and you must use a slow DOS machine with it. I just get by with a 233 Pent1 ... you really should use a 486 machine!

If you have a DPL R100 the best you can do for PL is to run the R100 in carrier and rig an outboard TS32 or TS64 with it.

Hope this helps!
Brian, WD9HSY

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Motorola R100 for Ham Bands?

2004-01-18 Thread Brian Poellnitz
Hi Bob,

The R100 can be easily retuned to 70cm. Trick is, you must modify the RSS
program in a hex editor to allow programming of frequencies below 450 MHz. The
how-to for that is found at http://www.batlabs.com/r100.html. After modifying
the RSS, program your frequencies and re-align per the manual and you should be
ready to go.

Good luck es 73's
