Floppy
Ok, I've got another strange problem. We are in the process of moving our backups from an older PC to a newer PC. We installed Windows 98v2 (not my choice, but we had to) and did all the Windows updates. Installed Retrospect 5.0 and now when Retrospect is running, the floppy drive just rattles. Updated to 5.15, no change. The "new" System is a Pentium III - 550, CD-ROM and CD-WR. SCSI card with a DLT drive connected to it. (well, the DLT is not connected yet, but it will be) The old system is a Pentium Pro 200. Any ideas on this? I looked for a little while on the web sites and could not find anything related to this problem. I was wondering if the ASPI driver has something to do with it as we just clicked NEXT-NEXT-FINISHED all through the installation, accepting all defaults and I noticed that it said that it was installing the ASPI drivers as well. Re: Backing up a Butler SQL Server
Phil, Butler SQL 2.5.2 (the version I'm using) is Apple-scriptable. The User manual contains a sample script for it (if you don't have access to the manual, let me know, and I'll send it to you). The User manual has a whole chapter dedicated to backup strategies (and the Reference Guide goes into greater detail) and also states the following: Butler SQL includes support for online backups using its Backup command. The Backup command is necessary because it is not possible to make reliable copies of files that are in use. For example, you do not want to backup a database that includes partially completed transactions. Butler SQL's Backup command: * waits until all current transactions are completed, * makes a copy of the one or all of the databases installed on the server, and * detaches the database journal and activity logs. While the backup is in progress no users will be allowed to update the affected databases or begin a database transaction. Users will, however, be allowed to view data in the databases. Once the Backup command has completed normal access to the server will be restored. At this point you can then use your backup software to copy the files to archival media. Refer to the SQL Reference Guide for a detailed description of the Backup command. The backup command can be issued from any application that allows you to send SQL to a Butler server. For example, you could use AppleScript to write an applet that connects to your server, issues the backup command, then disconnects. Here is a simple AppleScript script that will backup a database on a server... ** Good luck, Jim Coefield [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Backing up a Butler SQL Server From: "Phil Geller" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 07:40:40 -0800 A client is using a Butler SQL Server to support a Panorama database. This database stores data in RAM. I would like to Retrospect server, running on the same system to shut it down, so that the data is flushed to a file, before the backup starts. Butler SQL is not Apple Scriptable (at least without an optional add-on, which may not be available for this version... I haven't researched that yet.) Does anyone have thoughts on the best way to deal with this? What I've done for now is shutdown and restarted the server just before the backup begins. If it works that should update the database file. Re: Floppy
Hi Matt, Retrospect can poll the floppy drive constantly on systems with SuperDisk drivers and no SuperDisk. The problem is that the pre-installed system had SuperDisk drivers installed, even though there is no SuperDisk on the computer. The fix for this is a simple edit of the registry. 1. Launch Regedit and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 2. Find the key (or similar): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Enum \SCSI \COMPAQ__LS-120_COM___ \MFCHILD0001PCIVEN_8086DEV_7111%SUBSYS_FUNC_0110 4. Within this key look for a value named "CurrentDriveLetter". Change this from "A" to "B" (or any unused drive letter on your system). 5. Quit Regedit, saving changes, and restart. Hope that helps! Re: CDRW drives useable on a Mac in the UK
I've just wasted a couple of hours looking for a CDRW drive sold in the UK that supports packet-writing. None of the distributors I have spoken to even know what packet-writing is! If anyone knows of such a drive please can they let us all know? Specifically, we need an external USB CDRW drive that supports packet-writing (and so Retrospect) and that is sold in the UK Please put any ideas on the retro email as we are looking into the same thing. thanks -- -- To subscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives:http://list.working-dogs.com/lists/retro-talk/ For urgent issues, please contact Dantz technical support directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or 925.253.3050.
Hard drive partitions in Config/Devices
I have a client who is running Retrospect 4.1i and they recently installed a new firewire drive that they partitioned into about 6 separate partitions to organize their data. The strange thing is, that when you open up Retrospect and go to Configure/Devices, all of those partitions are listed along with the single backup drive. I have never seen a hard drive show up in the Configure/Devices tab before. What is even scarier is that if you accidentally select erase from the menu, it does erase the partition! (Which actually happened to them by the way!). Is this something that is indicative to firewire drives? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I used to use Hammer Tools to format drives and it would do this - erroneously set the drive as if it was a renoveable disc. This makes it a "target" drive in Retrospect, and you can imagine the consequences on a fileserver that also ran Retrospect. I'd stick to Drive Setup or make sure the volumes are not flagged as "removeable media".
