Re: auto erase tapes

2001-02-22 Thread mark . maytum

Michael,

Try making a storage set for each tape you want to use in your backup
script. If your backup script is set to "full" or "recycle" (depending on
your version of retro) the backup script will overwrite the tape when it's
re-inserted.

I can't seem to find any documentation on how to have tapes automatically
erased when a script starts. Right now the backup script requests new
media
names "xxx" or erased. How can I set up my backup script to automatically
erase a tape? I do full backups to a different tape every day and want to
get
away from having to erase those tapes manually.

error 5 (unknown) on Windows client

2001-02-22 Thread NetHead

Greetings all.

Just in the last couple of days, one of my Windows clients has started
returning the following error message:

"Can't access volume DISK (C:) on WIN_CLIENT, error 5 (unknown)"

The client computer is running Windows 98 with Retro client 5.1 for
windows.

The backup station is a Mac Workgroup Server 8150 running MacOS 8.5.1 and
Retro 4.3. (The ASIP software is no longer running on this machine)

I have searched Dantz's site for info on this error message, but to no
avail. Hopefully someone here will have some insight.

TIA,

Re: G4s and error 519 - AN UPDATE

2001-02-22 Thread matt barkdull

Here's an oddity. I used to get a lot of 519 errors when I had DAT
tape changers, but since switching to DLT I hardly have any problems
and the problems I do have are directly related to the end users
machine.

I ran DLT on a mixed 10BaseT with Hubs and switches for about 6
months before I moved to a new building and have 10/100 switched
(Cisco 5500's) network. All of the machines I back up now are
100BaseT full Duplex. The Mac I was doing the backups on is a
9600/G4-450. The machine I am currently doing the backups on is a
7600/G3-250. I built a cable to connect the external DLT drive to
the internal SCSI bus. because the internal bus is SCSI-2 Fast
(10MB/sec) while the external connector is only SCSI-2 (5MB/Sec).

The speed difference between the two machines only dropped 2-3MB/min
on average (averaging about 100MB/min). The 7600 is a good
combination. Low volume Filemaker Server during the day, Retrospect
backups at night.

One of the previous messages indicated the problem occuring on a 10T
network, otherwise I'd suspect the (presumably OT) problem might be getting
exposed by the higher throughput now that the G3 backup machine is on 100T,
as the G4 has always been. Can anyone else confirm seeing the problem on a
10T only network?

Absolutley - we see it on a 10T unswitched network that can be as
slow as...insert your favourite cliche here... that said it does
seem to fail more often when there is less overall network traffic
(ie the middle of the night) and the throughput is higher. No 519s
using AppleTalk (and I have checked and all the G4s have different
node numbers so that is not the problem in our case)

Our backup machine is 7300/180 with an AdvanSys UltraWide SCSI card
to a Sony DDS-4 drive.

I personally would get a buslink USB hard drive (or two or howevermany
you need.)
I might get some flack for suggesting this but It works great and its
cheaper than tape.
You also never have to change a tape. The only thing to be leary
about is its extention.
being yet another 3rd party extention it might not play well with some.
I have tested this
in two different situations and it works great. We backup maybe
60 gigs just about
every day. This translates to 48 or so gigs (after 2 months)
with Retros compression on.
My next step is to impliment another one of these drives and start a
rotating backup
scheme so I can keep a copy off site. ( if anyone has a
step by step for this I'd
appreciate it. ) This single Hard Drive has been backing up for
about two months
and can probably go for about another month before I will have to either
re-write it
or switch to another HD.

Now that I have the option, my dilemma is: Should I go with a tape

last
before it gets stretched, or worn beyond useability?
I'm using a G4/400/9.0.4 ... a single user, not on any network.

519 Error disconnects ASIP server

2001-02-22 Thread Bob Durst

Just encountered a bad situation. I had turned off file and mail
servers on my ASIP server to run a RS backup. During the backup
something happened and RS shows a 519 error and of course quit
backing up. Upon checking on the server, I discovered that it was
running just fine, but no longer thought that it was connected to
ethernet. Trying to reconnect it from the CP was futile, as it would
never make the connection. I was forced to restart the server to
reestablish a network connection.

Backups of Share points have been occurring flawlessly for some time.

Anyone have a clue what might have happened and how to prevent this
in the future? We had been having trouble with backups failing and
thought that we had solved the problem (bad VXA drive), but some of
the symptoms earlier are frighteningly similar to what just occurred.

Configuration: ASIP 6.3.3 on G4 with 9.0.4 with the latest upgrades.
RS 4.3 running on a separate Mac (ASIP is a client). Server had been
up for 10 days when this occurred.

Anytime I have retro not finding a disk I do the following. It almost
always fixes the problem.

I have all my clients volumes set up via the Selected volumes option in
the client configuration window.

Hilite all the volumes. Hit Delete and answer yes. What will be left are
the one that the client can see at this time. Hilite all of these and go
fix your backup scripts and groups as needed.

Not really an easy question to answer because selecting appropriate media
depends a lot on how much data needs to be backed up.

Personally I like to use both. My general strategy is to have a 2nd disk
with sufficient capacity to hold a full backup and a week of nightly
incrementals. At the end of the week I do a backup to tape then recycle the
disk based storage sets. I cycle the tapes off site. Depending on the
capacity of the tape, the end of week tape may be a full backup or it may be
a backup of the backup disk.

In developing a backup strategy its always a compromise between cost and
potential to lose data.

Cheers, Malcolm

Re: tape or hard drive?

2001-02-22 Thread Donovan Brooke

Hey Erik, your point about the "...6months ago..." is true!.
This is why we have elected to get yet another USB drive when it comes
to it.
The 3rd drive will always be an old back-up. 3 drives will cost
us $1200.00. We think this will provide the security we need
and still for
less cost than tape. However, its a pretty ambiguous decision.
ie...Firetape is $800 and each tape is $250 (from pre-release article)
Tapes are 50 gigs as apposed to the HD's being 60. I think you get
one free tape with the Firetape. So, it would cost a total of almost
$1600 (4 tapes) which would give you a bit more space. A little cheaper
to go with HD's... but not much.

Multiple HD's rotated off-site will take care of this but in the long run,
tape becomes cheaper when you start keeping redundant copies - and they've
saved my bacon a few times! Combining
them makes for the best of both worlds in terms of data security with a
local HD mirror for the quick accidental delete/system crash restores,
and tape to handle the long term issues - "umm that project I worked on
6 months ago is gone". Plus having tapes around gives you a nice
archival option to free up disk space.. Cheers,

thanks very much for taking the time to share yr backup strategy with
me, Malcom -- excellent ideas, since I basically have had no overall
efficient strategy myself! i like yr idea of using a disc for
increments, then weekly backing to tape. I'll also do off-site storage
for one backup set this time, too.

many thanks,

PS: I know there are many hi-end tape drives out there, but d'you know
of a reliable one in the $300-range?

RE: user deferred?

2001-02-22 Thread Craig Isaacs

I was just looking through my log file and I notice that there are a lot
of entries for a user that say that the user was deferred every
4 minutes yesterday from 9:48am to 4:48 pm.

I have seen this before with different users.

Does anyone know why this happens? What is going on?

Sounds like the user clicked "Defer" and then didn't enter a time.

I've seen this happen with MacOS 9 and Multiple users installed and running.

I removed Multiple users from all the Macs I use and it now works fine.

Perhaps Dantz has a better solution though?

The only problem with this theory is that the users are not at their
desk when it happens. Believe me, that's one troubleshooting step I
took. I walked up to their machine a few minutes before it was
suppose to backup and watched. Nobody but me even close to the Mac,
and the Mac doesn't even come up and give the dialog box asking if
they want to defer or not. Went back to the server after about 10
minutes and the log said "User Deferred".

I'm guessing that, like me, Gary probably starts his backups late at
night when nobody is around. My users are 8-5'ers and if they are
here at 5:05, it's because they are warming up their cars. ;)
