Re: Internet Backup

2000-04-18 Thread Greg Jewett

Another method that we found works at Motorola, is to keep DHCP, and
using the following in a batch script, on Windows OS machines. We do
not have a problem with our Macintosh systems and DHCP and the
Retrospect Client.

net stop Retrospect (Whatever it is called in your Services Control Panel)
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net start Retrospect

This causes the DHCP renewal to take place, when the client has been
stopped and then starts it again, once the new IP address has been
obtained. We put a shortcut of this batch file on their desktops,
and when they come in and dock, the double-click this icon, and it
take 10 seconds.

It also resolves any network problems they maybe having with expired
DHCP leases, that are not automatically renewed.

machines were going for some time without being backed up. We isolated this
problem to changing IP addresses and noticed that whenever we "forgot" a
client and readded them, they worked fine until the user's IP address
changed again. To solve this issue, we reserve all of our IP addresses - we
also do this for DNS purposes.

Now, your problem is different in that we haven't been backing up mobile
users that dial-in. Here at RD, we have people that travel but no sales
force or anyone that works from home on a continual basis. I would suspect
that your best avenue would be to back up those systems via AppleTalk since
it doesn't seem to matter where the machines are on the AppleTalk network
or what the node address is.

Subject: Internet Backup

Hi there,

I was wondering how to manage a backup when they have a fixed ip or
dhcp at work then go home and use dialup on macs and pc's and travel.

How does retrospect recognise a changing ip. Do I have to add the
subnet for all the isp's that are being used??

Thanks

[Mac OS X] Exporting/Importing NFS Shares...

2000-04-07 Thread Greg Jewett

At 11:49 AM -0700 9/16/99, Juergen wrote:
Hello,

I asked a coupla days ago mixed in with another topic, so I'm trying
again:

How can I share directories via NFS?
In NetworkManager I can go to FileSharing and successfully mount NFS
filesystems. But in the 'Shared Directories' tab, the button for
creating a new 'export' is grayed out. What's going on? Obviously
there must be something not set up right a bit higher in the config
chain?

All..

I am having some difficulties when attempting export and import NFS
directories on Mac OS X. We figured this is the best work-around for
backups of our Mac OS X server until we can get a UNIX Client for
Retrospect. We are planning on exporting the data volumes, and
importing them on a HP/UX system that has HP Omniback on it. The
Omniback software will backup those imported NFS directories.

We are also investigating the possibilities of Samba for creating SMB
based shares from Mac OS X, and then mounting those on the Windows
Retrospect Server so we can back it up there.

PROBLEM:

Mac OS X seems to be happy with the fact that we have exported our
/data directory. No errors. Verified that it is exported in the
NetworkManager as well as the NetInfoManager.

When using the HP/UX "SAM" tool (we have telnet session into the
HP/UX box at this time), we attempt to mount the NFS Share, and it
fails with the error message of "Permission Denied".

When we Import a NFS share using the Mac OS X mount_nfs command, it
works without errors, and we mount the NFS Share to a directory in
our /tmp directory. We can browse and copy files without any
problems.

Mac OS X (Export) -- HP/UX (Import) DOES NOT WORK.
Mac OS X (Import) -- HP/UX (Export) WORKS GREAT.

It might have something to do with NetInfo, but I am not sure how to
get around or configure NetInfo to get this to work. Any ideas?

** On a side note, if we use NetworkManager to import the said NFS
share above, it will tell us that we must reboot our system before it
will mount the directory. However, if we do it manually from the
command-line, it works without such a prompt. What is going on here?

KVM Switchboxes and Backup Server

2000-03-09 Thread Greg Jewett

All..

Is anyone else out there using Belkin OmniView Pro KVM
(Keyboard-Video-Mouse) switch-boxes with their Mac and PC Backup
Servers, as well as other servers?

Some background --

At Motorola, we have a large investment in these switch-boxes, to
control all of our servers in the racks that we have, mainly because
the 8-port boxes can be daisy-chained to allow for 127 devices. Now,
we have not actually gotten that far, but we do have at least 2-3
boxes daisy-chained.

We have multiple 3-shelf, 150-200 foot racks, allowing us to place
roughly 50-60 servers neatly on the shelves, and control them from a
central KVM station.

Here is the Retrospect related question --

The switch-box requires that you press "SCROLL LOCK" twice, to get
it's attention, and doing so it "beeps". You then have the option of
pressing an assortment of keys that only the switch-box "sees" and
interprets (switch between different inputs) and then it gives
control back to the server that is currently selected.

Unfortunately, when you press SCROLL LOCK, the switch box does not
always hear your key press right away, sometime you must press the
SCROLL LOCK 3-6 times, before you get the "Ok, I am listening" beep.

I am afraid that Retrospect (Windows OS or Mac OS) is interpreting
the SCROLL LOCK as a pause, and causes the backup server to just sit
there. I am thinking that the PC does not get a "key up" event from
the keyboard driver (probably the switch-box interfering here), and
just waits until you "click the mouse" or "press a key" to get a "key
up" before it continues.

Here is an example. Notice that the last event was 5:30:39 PM, and
the next time something happened was 8:26:53 AM. The entire night
was passed up, nobody was backed up. Keep in mind I have checked the
obvious, and all scripts are as they have been for years, and the
time frames indicate that Retrospect will backup at least 40-50
clients each evening. The log shows this from previous evenings.

If I happen to use the KVM during the afternoon, but go to my desk
and check the backup server with Timbuktu, the system will backup
all-night-long. This is what I have noticed.

Can anyone offer any assistance here? Suggestion to what might be
wrong if I do not have the right conclusion?

Thanks! :)

RE: nt permissions

2000-02-21 Thread Greg Jewett

To make sure that you are going to get those settings and permissions
backed-up, make sure that you immediate/or scheduled script has the
option to backup the NTFS permissions (a setting under the Windows
Client options).

Also you definitely want to make sure that the registry and other
portions of Windows 2000 (if you are using W2K), are backed up as
well. (also a setting under the Windows Client options)

If I do a full backup of any ntfs parition with retro server 5 will the

I'm fairly confident it will, I guess I just need confirmation and
assurance of the process from someone with experience of the process.
  maz

Absolutely!

However, I highly recommend you test your backups. It's always a good idea to
restore occasionally just to make sure everything's working the way you expect
it to.

Re: Mac Client problem with Win2K

I am having a very unusuall problem. The windows machine is running Win2k RC2 and Retrospect Server 5. The client is a PowerBook G3 running OS9. When configuring the server it sees the IP address of the Macintosh Client. In the add function the server requests the password of the client but refuses to take the one that I entered when installing the Mac client. Tried this five times including reinstalling the Mac Client. No luck. Is there some compatibility issue between Windows 2000 running Retrospect 5 and OS9?

I have no problems in the exact scenario. I have a Mac with Mac OS 9, and Retrospect 4.2 client. A Windows 2000 Server (GM), using Retrospect 5, and have had no problems. Make sure to forget the client from the database, reinstall it.

Reinstalling the client can be tricky. It will remember the client password unless you first, delete the control panel, reboot, reinstall the control panel and reboot again. Then all should be well. It should be asking you for a password at installation. Make sure the notorious CAPSLOCK is not down when entering the password on install, nor when entering the password when attempting to connect at the server.

Retrospect list folks,
Right now we are operating multiple Mac Retrospect 4.2 servers. We need to expand and would like to purchase the NT 5.0 version. Anyone working with a mixed enviorment? Eventually the Macs will be retired but for now I plan for one mac to handle all the licences and split up the load between remaining mixed platforms. If you've done this - any gotchas I should be looking for?

Regardless of the platform that you choose for your Server, it will backup Macintosh and Windows machines alike, including all files, and security. We are keeping our Macintosh systems for as long as we can, upgrading when necessary.

We are using the Windows 2000 operating system as early adopters. We have successfully tested and put into production the backup of many Windows 2000 machines using both the Retrospect Server 5.0 for Windows and Retrospect Server 4.2 for Macintosh. The latest Windows and Macintosh clients work flawlessly as well.

Just shows how well Macintosh and Windows applications and services shared between them can be co-developed and produce magnificent results.
