[scifinoir2] Re: Study Dispels Some Sexual Behavior Myths

2006-11-01 Thread Amanda
I saw a special on teens and the whole friends with Benifits etc.
Anyways even that special said that the new generation are having
less physical sex etc.lol more of them have taken up abstentence,
but are practicing oral because they think it's not sex because of
what numbskull?

sometimes listening to the "experts" and "facts". For example, one
person says the realization that Africans aren't promiscuous was a
surprise. I've never thought of Africans as promiscuous--at least,
not nearly on the level of Westerners. I'd always thought of the
AIDS/HIV and other STD issues as being related more to education,
health care, etc. One wonders how many well-meaning organizations
are thus taking the wrong paths to helping other populations, given
that their premises may be wrong.

> LONDON - In the first comprehensive global study of sexual
behavior, British researchers found that people aren't losing their
virginity at ever younger ages, married people have the most sex,
and there is no firm link between promiscuity and sexually
transmitted diseases.
> The study was published Wednesday as part of a series on sexual
and reproductive health by the British medical journal The Lancet.
Professor Kaye Wellings of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicines and her colleagues analyzed data from 59 countries.
> Experts say the study will be useful not only in dispelling
popular myths about sexual behavior, but in shaping policies that
will help improve sexual health across the world.
> Researchers looked at published studies on sexual behavior in the
last decade. They also used data from national governments
worldwide. Wellings noted that since the survey results were based
on self-reporting, they could be susceptible to error.
> Wellings said she was surprised by some of the survey's results.
> "We did have some of our preconceptions dashed," she said,
explaining they had expected to find the most promiscuous behavior
in regions like Africa with the highest rates of sexually
transmitted diseases. That was not the case, as multiple partners
were more commonly reported in industrialized countries where the
incidence of such diseases was relatively low.
> "There's a misperception that there's a great deal of promiscuity
in Africa, which is one of the potential reasons for HIV/AIDS
spreading so rapidly," said Dr. Paul van Look, director of
Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization,
who was not connected to the study. "But that view is not supported
by the evidence."
> Wellings says that implies promiscuity may be less important than
factors such as poverty and education _ especially in the
encouragement of condom use _ in the transmission of sexually
transmitted diseases.
> The survey found that single men and women in Africa were fairly
sexually inactive: only two-thirds of them reported recent sexual
activity, compared with three-quarters of their counterparts in
developed countries.
> The study also found that contrary to popular belief, sexual
activity is not starting earlier. Nearly everywhere, men and women
have their first sexual experiences in their late teens _ from 15 to
19 years old _ with generally younger ages for women than for men,
especially in developing countries. That is no younger than 10 years
ago.
> Still, there are considerable variations across countries. In the
United Kingdom, for example, men and women tend to lose their
virginity at ages 16 1/2 and 17 1/2 respectively. In comparison, men
and women in Indonesia waited until they were 24 1/2 and 18 1/2
respectively.
> Researchers also found that married people have the most sex,
reporting engaging in sexual activity in the previous four weeks
more frequently than single people. There has also been a gradual
shift to delay marriage, even in developing countries.
> While that has meant a predictable rise in the rates of premarital
sex, experts say this doesn't necessarily translate into more
dangerous behavior.
> In some instances, married women may be at more risk than single
women.
> "A single woman is more able to negotiate safe sex in certain
circumstances than a married woman," says van Look, who points out
that married women in Africa and Asia are often threatened by
unfaithful husbands who frequent prostitutes.
> There is much greater equality between women and men with regard
to the number of sexual partners in rich countries than in poor
countries, the study found.

[scifinoir2] Re: Studios Unveil 2006 Slates

2006-01-09 Thread Amanda
I am so glad that this isn't based on the series. I remember that
remake Fox was supposed to do. When I saw the cast I was like
what. None of the characters had the appeal of the originals it was
like they were trying to have models inc. or something. The only
cast member that was cool was Idris, but then again they probably
would have jacked his character up.

or you can go to http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/ I think they post
the ratings every Monday or something

Those ratings don't have to be major network high in order to last.
I remember at TV Writer.com Larry Brody said audiences can be around
500,000 (maybe higher now) to last on the cable networks and around
4,000,000 to 5 to last on the Majors.

The Network Shows (these are old, and the ones I could find. that
could be found on scifi wire as well)

1. Desperate Housewives 14.4
2. Lost 12.6
3. Medium 10.4

[scifinoir2] Re: WTF?--"Passions" coming to Sci Fi Channel

2006-02-13 Thread Amanda
Passions the dumbest as show on daytime television. Why does the
Scifi channel keep buying crap over good programing? It amazes me
that they keep doing this despite the fact that most of these crap
shows don't seem to last. Remember Tremors, the Black Scorpian
anyone? I mean you'd think they would have figured out if you buy
something watchable people will keep watching. And now they go and
pick up Passions for goodness sake. If you want to get a
supernatural soap then bring back DS not Passions e.

Black Cable Viewers Cast Eyes Beyond BET

AWARDS SHOW TOPS LIST

It probably comes as no surprise that Black Entertainment Television
was the No.1 rated network in primetime among African-American
viewers in 2005. But what may open a few eyes is that African-
Americans are also sampling more broad-based networks like Turner
Network Television, Disney Channel and even Lifetime Network at
nearly the same levels.

Network executives say efforts to provide more diverse images both
from their original and acquired programming are beginning to pay
dividends as African-American viewers tune into general
entertainment networks, as well as BET, to see images of themselves.

Despite the industry's emphasis on reaching Hispanic viewers,
network executives say they're not turning their backs on the
African-American audience. With African-American viewers
representing 23% of all cable subscribers — despite only making up
12% of all cable homes — network executives are conscious of
providing fare that will appeal to the group.

"Research tells us, and I think we all know in our guts, that when
there are characters on the air that you can relate to, whether in
personality, ethnicity or sexuality, you're going to tune in," said
USA Network president Bonnie Hammer.

Certainly no nationally rated network features more African-American
images on cable than BET. As a result, it was the highest-rated
network among African-Americans, with a 3.8 household rating and
delivering an average of 396,000 households.

AWARDS SHOW TOPS LIST
The network, one of three African-American targeted cable services —
the other two, Black Family Channel and TV One, aren't nationally
rated — also posted the most-watched cable show among the group with
its June BET Awards Show — one of four BET specials that finished
among the top 10 shows of the year. The music-themed awards show
extravaganza garnered a 31.7 household rating in black households.

"[Last year] was our most-watched year ever for ratings, viewers and
households," said BET chairman Debra Lee. "We further solidified BET
as the No. 1 cable network in primetime for African-Americans and
the No. 1 cable network overall for our target demographic of
African-Americans ages 18-34."

While BET posted a 9% increase in its African-American household
rating, other networks were also increasing black viewers while
nipping at its the heels. TNT, on the strength of its package of
National Basketball Association regular season and playoff
telecasts, finished second with a 3.7 household rating (386,000
households).

"Because drama is so universal, drama lovers come from a wide
variety of racial, ethnic or social backgrounds, and they look to
TNT as a key viewing destination," said TNT senior vice president of
programming Ken Schwab.

The tween-targeted Disney Channel rode the popularity of its
multicultural comedy That's So Raven and its animated comedy The
Proud Family to third place with a 3.6 rating, while distaff network
Lifetime (369,000) and kids-targeted network Nickelodeon (368,000)
finished tied for fourth with a 3.5 rating among African-American
households. USA Network (325,000) and Nick At Nite (319,000) next
with a 3.1 rating.

Each of the top five networks posted increases with the exception of
Nickelodeon, which was flat. Networks such as USA Network (24%),
Lifetime (17%) and Nick At Nite (11%) turned in very strong
performances on the strength of original and acquired fare targeting
African-Americans.

[scifinoir2] NABOB calls merger of WB and UPN 'inequitable' to black TV station owners

"The black-owned stations that were affiliates of the WB and UPN are
facing the prospect of having no programming source and may be have to
become independent stations buying all of their programs on the open
market."

Why not take this as an opportunity to work together and create black
programing. They could have dramas/sitcoms etc. It probably isn't
that easy I get that, but instead of getting upset why aren't they
forming a plan. I mean this is going to happen they need to be doing
some strategies.

doesn't even have to be all black programing. Hell there are good
show that they could be picking up that have been canned even if they
can only play it in syndication. Then there is the syndication series
like Cleo 2525 etc. they could be doing things like that.

[scifinoir2] Re: Scifi Neilsen Ratings

2006-02-15 Thread Amanda
True, but they probably aren't going to change or get rid of it
anytime soon. They have found more accurate rating systems, but
they tended not to be good on advertising and since that's where the
money comes from the channels haven't adopted new systems.

The point is though that with those low ratings on the smaller
networks like The WB and UPN being good at 1-2.9 or whatever, then
they could have had a black drama. They could have produced the
drama on a lower budget if they had to like they do the sitcoms. I
wouldn't care as long as the show was good. Now since a lot of
people still don't get the WB or UPN that does still make it
difficult and the bigger they get I think the more we will see less
and less black sitcoms or possibilities for dramas. Dejavu anyone?
Reminds anyone of FOX? It's cool that the channels are getting more
of an audience and they are also merging, but where will we be?

It's sad because I do remember when black Americans were talking
about creating other channels catered to African American Audiences,
people kept bring up that blacks owned UPN, because we had a lot of
sitcoms. Now we new a black person didn't own it, but we thought
because UPN catered to us, because we were the majority audience.
Now thats starting to change.

Off well sort of off my rant

Another thing to think about is the ratings of City of Angels. I
the series was about 2mill black Americans watching the series. Now
think if that had been on UPN or WB. I do think it would have done
well. Maybe not great like the majors, but well.

It's also sad because we have black Americans who own independent
stations. Now I know they have to make money etc., but couldn't
they come up with a way to work with each other if they are afraid
about what will happen with The WB and UPN merge into CW?

[scifinoir2] Re: A quick Battlestar Gallactica note...

2006-02-24 Thread Amanda
That's what I've been wondering. I mean won't it be boring with
only a few faces? Or maybe they have been planning for a new
generation of cylons that are half human half cylon like the baby.
Maybe they originally planned on getting humans dna or maybe
infiltrate the fleet and have them marrying having children with
humans. I just thought about this, what if there are already half
cylon children? I mean if six was using Baltar by having a
relationship with him how do we know others weren't doing the same
with other individuals of power, or just plain having relationships
with humans? The new generation may have already started. Another
thing is what's up with Baltar being in six's head like she's in
his? Is it psychological or something even deeper than that?

by the way Dr. Who is coming. I'm happy. I just wish they would
start being more picky about what they pick up.lol

[scifinoir2] Re: Tyler Perry's 'Reunion' Tops Box Office

2006-02-27 Thread Amanda
Just hope that when they do figure this out they don't pull a
blaxploitation on us. By that I mean start making movies with black
faces and white crew. Now don't get me wrong nothing wrong with
white people working on the crew, but when it's nothing but white
people then something is wrong.

I loved Tom Baker as Dr. Who. Dude was insane. I don't know if
it's just Dr. Who, but I've noticed that a lot of the characters he
playes has a bit of the insane off your hat feel abou them.

And Finally Scifi has gotten Who. Thanks. I love Stargate and BS,
but damn I need something more than three shows.

I've seen the Canadian science fiction channel and they have so many
of our shows, so does the BBC etc., but when they come out with
something scifi takes damn near years to get it.

[scifinoir2] American Music and It's Influence

2006-02-28 Thread Amanda
http://www.tindlemusic.com/MDCDhoy.htm Traditional Hymns played on the
Native American Flute. Hearing this makes me wonder how much our
music is different. By that I mean you might hear bluegrass etc. and
don't realize it might sound similar, but has different influences
from that of the U. K. etc. Okay yes I listen to some bluegrass,
Mandolin music etc. odd made up instruments, but then again I'm just
weird. I'm starting to notice that a lot of the sounds found in
American music aren't in Scottish, Irish etc even though that's were
some of the music originated. Also the blues is different from that
of African.

Have to check this out it's about a black detective, and a fine one at
that. It's on Mystery Mondays. I kept thinking the guys boss in the
show looked familar than I remembered he was Uther in Mists of
Avalon. Oh also check out Conviction all though it's ending soon.
Another thing is I thought Footballer's Wives would suck, but actually
it's pretty damn good.

I remember My Life and Times. That was a pretty cool concept. Guy
in future reflects on early 21th century. Another show Space
Rangers was hokey yes. I mean the sets were like WTF, but when I
see it again it wasn't that bad, they just really needed to work on
the show. With series like Babylon 5 and DS9 coming out at the same
time you knew that show was going down.

2006-03-04 Thread Amanda
Well it came out in 85 and I was 5, so I don't know. But the Scifi
channel showed it way back when they had the short lived series
thing going on. From the look of the series it wasn't a cheapie
saturday moring/aftertoon kind of show, but then again some of those
shows weren't so cheap. Hence the reasons why Space Academy and
Jason of the Star Command went off.

clothes that look like they come from Gap or the Limited. Another
thing is I like the new BS and all, but what I liked about the old
one was that the culture was totally different from ours. The new
BS is way too Earth for me. It was more fun when Apollo was still
Apollo, and Starbuck was still Starbuck. I liked the idea of
ancient greek culture, but in a ship.

will say, the aerial battle between Buck and Hawk was awesome for
the time...

[scifinoir2] Re: Create a Superhero for new Reality Show

They make money. Plus even if they loose in ratings they can still
do well since they don't cost that much to make. Reason the Brits

don't involve leaping over tall buildings, stopping runaway trains
or robberies, or firing laser beams from your eyes? What, will you

It's funny they don't mind to talk about inventions that white
people this decade have done that were actually invented hundred or
so years before. Can anyone say a French man inventing an
automobile in the 1700's. Also everyone talks of Ford, but I also
hear of cars before he came up with the factories.

Nigeria now has the world's third largest film industry after
Hollywood and Bollywood. Most of the movies are dirt cheap, straight-

Their not lying about Siegfried except in the opera the dwarf raised
him to kill the dragon so he could get the gold.

I have been looking for this story for a while. I couldn't remember
the name until his mother was yelling to him in the first part of
the movie.

[scifinoir2] Re: My Online Reading Group Is Pretentious and Boring

2006-03-31 Thread Amanda
And this is the biggest of all. Just mention the idea of race and
Dune or LTR and all hell breaks loose. One thing I've learned from
many groups like this is that they don't want to talk about things
that are uncomfortable, hard issues etc. Not just race, but
anything that is serious.

Japanese, HK, Bollywood etc. (and yes I know these are different
countries, economics etc.)I think we should focus on making great
movies for the low buck etc.

[scifinoir2] Re: Trailer: Hannibal vs Rome movie (Alexander Siddiq of Deep Space 9)

2006-04-09 Thread Amanda
But you know I've always wondered about Dougray Scott especially
after watching Arabian Nights. He might be white, but he ain't that
light.lol

Same goes for Troy if the Trojans are supposed to the be Turkish
then the turks I saw in those docus they were showing when Troy was
being released and the Greeks as well should be who we saw in the
movies not Brad Pit.

A co-worker and I were talking about this very thing when we were
talking about how all the Romans, Greeks, even the French in movies
are always some British guy or chick. We were like yes they
mysteriously have british accents in Rome.lol Oh and let's not
forget Vikings. How the hell is a Viking going to have a british
accent pre them going to Britian. I can see a movie made with
people with british accents portraying native Americans. I wouldn't
put it past them. Another note. What did mess me up on Arabian
Nights was all the british accents going on as well, but you know
some of the actors after I saw that mini series I have sense
wondered about their ethnicity.

Well Aladin being Chinese wasn't a big thing for me, because I read
the tale of Aladin in a book of the Arabin Nights and he was a young
Chinese prince.

Big case in Point the Thief of Baghdad. I can barely watch this
movie. Yes it's beautiful, but when you grow up and learn about
actual Indians and what they really look like it's hard to watch
this movie and take it seriously that these people are
arabian/indian etc. When you watch Bollywood movies and other
movies of Indian cinema and then watch Thief of Baghdad you are like
what the hell is this.lol

I am now watching the Japanese version of SPD and Mystic Force and it's

That's one of the problems that's being talked about teachers in pre
to elementary schools. Teacher's who just studied to get a degree in
education, but didn't for a subject etc.

I think he used books etc. I've read stories written during the 18th
and 19th even the 20th century where you had people being taught a
language from books. Now imagine what those people would have
sounded liked speaking French or Spanish they learned form a book

[scifinoir2] Atlantis and Rama (what do you think)

2005-06-14 Thread Amanda
I'm a sucker for these types of stories. Did Humans have technology
that we had before? Could a war have happened that destroyed peoples
way of life making them have to start over? Or was it natural
disasters. Natural nuclear reactors have been found. Or could it
have been a massive heat ray? Or other devices that were just things
that have regular uses that and made into weapons. Anyway just fun
theories.

http://forums.atlantisrising.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000945.html
http://television.press-world.com/v/2045/nuclear-warfare-in-the-
ancient-times-concepts-for-a-film-script.html ( would make a cool
movie if it was made. Maybe not made by Hollywood though, they would
turn it into some mindless summer eye candy blockbuster.)
http://forums.atlantisrising.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000940.html (now
some as in the other are a little off, but the last one about the
heat ray theory is pretty cool.)

[scifinoir2] Re: I cried...

2005-06-23 Thread Amanda
The problem is Hollywood is making these films. And not just that,
they are making films to target a mass audience. Not always a good
way to make a film good. No offense to audiences, but when you make
films like that you end up making a bland movie. You try not to
offend people, have people feeling left out etc.

I'm trying to find fantasy books that black youth could read. They
don't have to be by or about African Americans, but I would like to
find those as well. Also what about African etc?

[scifinoir2] Re: What are Good Fantasy Books for Black Youth to Read

2005-06-28 Thread Amanda
First group around under 10 secton 10-14 and other group 15-up. I'm
looking for something to get them interested in fantasy as well as
scifi. I'm also looking for some good African epics. I know of
Sundiata, Askia Muhammed, Mwindo, Gassire's Lute etc., but I found
this book one day that had others I'd never heard of, I didn't buy
the book and later went back to buy it and it was gone. For the life
of me I can't remember the name. As well as myths and folktales etc.

[scifinoir2] Africast Launches America's First Pan-African Movie Channel

2005-08-31 Thread Amanda
http://sev.prnewswire.com/entertainment/20050809/NYTU00809082005-
1.html

NEW YORK, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Africast Television Network has
launched America's first Pan-African movie channel offering popular
African movies, dramas and documentaries as subscription video on
demand at its Website, http://www.africast.tv/. Internet Marketing
Consortium, an international marketing company, is investing $1.5
million in Africast on marketing and promotions aimed at U.S. and
worldwide audiences. Several award-winning films featured on
Africast's online movie channel, include:

-- The Campus Queen, premiering on Africast, exclusively in the
U.S., is celebrated Nigerian filmmaker Tunde Kelani's campus caper
of music and rival student organizations, explored earlier in Spike
Lee's School Daze. "The African film industry has come a long way,"
says Kelani. "I'm inspired by the growing market for African films
and distribution channels like Africast TV, a leading outlet for
quality movies depicting authentic African life. I look forward to
the premiere of The Campus Queen and presenting future works on
Africast."

-- La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil (The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun),
rated one of the year's 10 Best Films in 2000 by the Village Voice,
is about a determined crippled girl reinventing herself as Senegal's
first female newspaper vendor.

-- Dole (Money) offers a perspective on the crisis facing today's
youth. With family and social structures crumbling, they
increasingly rely on each other and pop culture, revealing that,
whether in Gabon or elsewhere, youthful disaffection is remarkably
similar.

-- Sango Malo (The Village Teacher), Brazilian educator Paolo
Freire's intimate portrait of social and economic changes in an
African village in Cameroon that contrasts two views of education:
traditional, "Eurocentric" curriculum that produces docile colonial
administrators, versus the practical skills needed to build self-
reliant rural communities.

Previews, programming and subscription details are at
http://www.africast.tv/. For $9.95 per month, subscribers can access
50 hours of film and drama programming which is refreshed by 10
additional hours of new programming each month. Africast is
negotiating with Comcast and other cable companies to expand its
service to selected cities.

"Culturally and politically, Africa is poised to undergo more
changes and wield more influence in the world than ever before,"
says John Sarpong, Africast Chairman and CEO. "However, much of what
is shown about Africa is a view from outside, seen through eyes that
are not African and, in some cases, not Africa friendly. Only if
Africans can present their stories to the world will Africa gain
renewed respect and realize her promising future. Our mission is to
provide a global voice for Africans to tell their own stories."

Africast TV provides general audiences with an entertaining and
informative window into the richness and promise of Africa and fills
a void in the global African market by providing intelligent and
appealing entertainment to a community that is aware of its heritage
and hungry for quality programming.

[scifinoir2] Re: Whats up with the term Refugee????

2005-09-07 Thread Amanda
Really I'm starting to wonder if Alex Jones isn't too far off in
what he's been saying that America is becoming. Really I hope he
is, but from what I am seeing it doesn't really look like it.

[scifinoir2] The New Tomorrow Another Kid's Scifi Series

2005-09-27 Thread Amanda
http://www.entercloud9.com/news/newsindex.asp?main=news05_09_01

Cloud 9's latest series "The New Tomorrow" has wrapped. Final
filming took place in the second week of September.

The first episode of The New Tomorrow will be screening on Seven in
Australia on 17th September from 11.00am – 12.00pm. It will also be
screening on Shake on FIVE on Sunday's from 2nd Oct at 11.05am!

The new website will be up soon http://www.thenewtomorrow.net

The New Tomorrow (26 x 30'), is a children's sci-fi adventure
series. The new series starts from the same premise as The Tribe - a
world with no adults, in which children have to re-create their own
society. This new version will be aimed at a younger audience of 8-
12 year olds.

The new version of the series sees three main tribes of children:
The Barbs, a primitive bunch of kids; The Ants, a disparate bunch of
children hanging on to the past; and The Priviledged, described as
a "slightly decadent, hedonistic gang".

In contrast to The Tribe's disused shopping mall setting, The New
Tomorrow's backdrop is snow-capped mountains, streams and rolling
landscape.

Many of the crew that worked on The Tribe were back for this series -
some of them having recently completed their work on Peter
Jackson's King Kong.

The New Tomorrow is distributed worldwide by Southern Star
International. For more information or enquiries on broadcasting The
New Tomorrow, please contact Southern Star International

Wonder what Star Wars would have looked like if it was made in the
30's 40's. Who would have played the characters we all know and
love. Well here's your chance.
