I don't know how long it'll be til the school discovers that I finally graduated. I don't know if I'll keep updating the site, but I did this quick update upon request - the on-sale dates for the SDRE/No Knife tour are on my ancient SDRE page on Hubcap. http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~bpmccal/sdre.html The only thing I could conceivably put up there in the not-too-distant future is some new kinda photo gallery. I've got color pics that never made it to the web and some nice color shots from these two nice girls I met in Florida during the last tour. Wow, it would really rock if No Knife toured. "Fire in the City of Automatons" really rocks. Heck, all No Knife albums are awesome. I'm not so sure where this "rumor" got started but if it comes to light this would be one really rad tour. Hey guys - talked to Dan last night about site stuff and the new record. Terms between the band and I are very good, no bitterness or anything. After we got the site biz talk settled we talked about the upcoming album... They're at Dreamland Studios in NY until the 15th. No title or artwork yet, but they got 14 songs. The record won't have all 14, but that leaves B-sides and other goodies. Lou Giordano is producing the album. He's done extensive work with Bob Mould/Husker Du/Sugar and recorded Live's Throwing Copper and some other records Dan mentioned. I'd never heard of the guy before but he seems to have a background (duh! "husker du!"). No current tour plans, but it doesn't look good for Joe touring with the band on bass support. hey guys, I'm just about to go to bed so this is gonna be short. I got a call from Dan today. They're all in NYC in the studio recording the new record. Dan left all this on my answering machine and I'm gonna call him back sometime this week. This may be old news, I haven't read this list in a while (3151 messages in my box, yeah). The domain sunnydayrealestate.com is going to be taken over by ArtistDirect and they're gonna do all the site work from some point in time not too far from now. I don't know how long this deal has been in place but Dan made it sound like it's been in works for a while now. I guess it's all part of the label and management transfer. I know it's gonna be said, so I'm gonna take some wind from some sails right here: "hey ansi, maybe it's cause you never update and YOU SUCK!" heheh. Well, what can you do with such limited input? I hope ArtistDirect does a great job with the site and if it totally blows me out of the water, so be it. They have the resources so let `em run with it. Dan mentioned keeping my name in the hat and some future work so maybe this isn't the end of my involvement.. who knows? Okay, that was a lot longer than I thought it would be. well, I meant for this to be a long response but I'll keep it short and sweet: Lack of development on sdre.com is partially my fault, yes. However there have been NUMEROUS things that have kept me from being able to flesh that site out to it's fullest extent that were beyond my control. Someone accused me of being too proud to seek help, but this is not the case. I've tried to outsource videos from two individuals who haven't returned these videos to me since I shipped them in May. Live MP3s? Never recieved the HQ shows or the greenlight from Greg. What about the band's personal pages? Despite initial enthusiasm I cannot get anybody to give me material for these sites. They're set up so that all the guys have to do is go to a site and type what they want. At least Dan sent me some pictures at one time, we were halfway there Paper Dolls? Never got the drawings from Chris. The shit really hit the fan a few weeks ago with the new label and management issues. My hands are tied and the exciting news I was eager to post a few weeks ago has been witheld upon request. It's a big combination of things and I'm sorry if i've "done a disservice to the fans" as someone eloquently put it. Greetings listers. I just came up with a nice little analogy that I'd like to share with you all. See, when I step in and try to promote a little restraint and try to get things "back on track" here I often get nice little responses like these from some SDRE-l members: "Bite me. People like other music, not just Sunny Day Real Estate." and "Fuck you, i'll talk about whatever I damn well please..." and "Who are you to be infringing on my rights" etc etc Well, it's kinda like this (and here's the analogy): Let's say you're a Catholic in Ireland and you're at church and you're praying and minding your own business when a Protestant worshipper walks into your Catholic church and starts preaching about Protestant ways. I mean, the Protestant has every right to do so, but does that make it *right*? Is that considerate? Think about it in terms of this SDRE list: I'm not going to tell you what you are to listen to or what you are to speak about in the real world. I'm not infringing on any rights. But I am saying that there are appropriate venues for specific things. This just happens to be a venue dedicated to SDRE. If you want to talk to others about Far or Promise Ring, there are places to do just that. Please don't discuss non-SDRE things here, that's all I ask. ps. you can switch around Protestant/Catholic up there, I was just setting an example. Hell, you could put "progress/politics" up there for all I care. Hoo-boy. I leave on Tuesday for the Far East. Southeast asia is considered to be the "far east" right? Or is that Arabia? no matter... News. yay. SDRE are now fully extracted from Sub Pop. There are something like three labels in the running for the trophy that is Sunny Day Real Estate. They plan to get all this label jive done soon after the upcoming shows in Seattle, Oregon, and BC!!! New record soon. All the new stuff is supposed to be incredible and everybody is super stoked to be writing this stuff. Sub Pop will be filming for a LIVE ALBUM VIDEO at two of the four upcoming shows. I guess this will be a VHS release (I'd like to see DVD, oooh) with *maybe* a CD counterpart sold separately or as a promo. I sunno. Would be neat. No new material at these shows... but who knows what may happen at the other non-video shows??? Dan's part of the page may be up and running in the next few months. Hey all - this might be old news (lord knows I don't read much on here anymore) but anybody notice that Joe Skyward plays bass on the new Damien record? Saw Damien play last night in Athens GA. Go support him on the rest of the tour. They drove 13 hours to texas today from Athens. The show was an intimate house show. This fella David Fischoff played and I'm sure the majority of this list would dig the "emo" content of his solo work. And Damien did this great stripped down version of Tornado... Speaking of Dan's writings, his Monkey book(s) should be coming out soon. He's having them published pretty soon and Chris Thompson is doing the illustrating. "It's gonna have a kind of a Pooh theme about it." Well, Pooh in the looks, but not in the actual content, he later specified. I'm leaving for Asia in a few weeks. May 11, specifically. Before I leave I plan to have a massive update to sdre.com and while I'm overseas I plan to keep the page going. Heard something on the old horn about some potential shows with SONIC YOUTH while doing a little california run. Maybe some shows in the general hometown area in the northwest...Vancouver and such. Virgin is still in the race, but now there are other big-name labels that are gallopping hard for that prize. I'm sure SDRE will do nothing to be compromised by any of the "suits." Greetings. That was a very polite and eloquent rebuttal. Please allow me to explain my opinions of JTB: This list has been around for a long time. I've had my ups and downs with it just as I'm sure many people who've spent any amount of time with this list have. Several times (most notably almost a year ago on the old list) JTB has come up here and discussions have abounded. This is simply a Sunny Day list and when I recieved so many posts all gaga about a non-SDRE band I got a little fed up. JTB threads have come and gone. It's nothing new here. There might have been a time when I'd have liked to have heard their music, but all the talk of them by this list in the past makes me shudder at the sight of their name. It's sad, but it's a simple psychological response. Now, I don't want to hinder anybody's abilities to exercise freedom of speech, but this exercise should be done in it's proper medium. I assume JTB could be considered "emo" and they certainly aren't considered to be "Sunny Day Real Estate." Why not discuss that band on the emo list? Many people from this list subscribe to the Emo list (the original Emo list was actually created as offspring of this list to discuss non-SDRE issues). I point this out to circumvent any argument validating an attempt to reach a certain audience specific to this list. Also, this email list should not be viewed as a room of any sort. Think of it instead as a Bulletin Board. A place for relevant notices and news to be posted. This list is method of informing its subscribers of breaking news and other SDRE tidbits. It is open so that people from all over the place can post news that they may have heard of. Chat rooms are available via IRC. Anthony Schmidt runs an IRC channel at #SDRE and he welcomes non-SDRE discussion there. Many subscribers (myself included) do not desire constant activity here. I'm perfectly happy that I don't get 50 emails a day from this list. I've said all I believe that needs to be posted publicly. I'd be more than happy to discuss this further privately or even set up a time on the SDRE IRC channel. I think it would be a good thing for those of you who think of me as an evil dictator to get to know me a little better - this could be achieved on the #SDRE channel sometime. I've chatted with many people who I'd scolded brashly for bad posts and great things came out of the chat. These arguments are often caused by misunderstandings between the lister and myself, the administrator. Here's something nice I'd been told that I think everybody will be happy to hear: Whenever the executive being seen would mention "having some associates visit the studio" (ie. make suggestions during the recording) SDRE would immediately scoff and the talks would end. SDRE will not be bent by any studio suits. While talking to Virgin this measure was never mentioned. Somebody in the band asked "what about studio time? Any visits?" to which the executive laughed! "Hell no! You're Sunny Day Real Estate for chrissakes! You're great as it is, otherwise I wouldn't be talking to you." That was a very good mark for Virgin, and probably one of the reasons they are/were continued to be looked into. Have no fear if SDRE signs to Virgin. This is the most updated page on the site and every single time I do something new I make a comment about it on the News page. So, the page has been updated recently with new pictures from Dawson. These are spectacular B&W shots andall but I think two are head-shots for promotional kits or something. See `em first on sunnydayrealestate.com! Well, the list *has* been slow lately, but you gotta remember that it's Spring Break for a lot of college kids. I'm only on these keys at night or when I'm not partying. I'm not telling you what you can and can't do in the real world, I'm keeping the list on topic because there are things you can and can't do here on the sdre-l. Do you spit in the eye of the legal system of your country because it won't let you murder or steal? Do you yell at the ref in a game of soccer for carding you because you have "the freedom" to pick up the ball and run depite the fact that The Rules of soccer specifically discourage this behavior? If I'm not mistaken the author of the above quoted message is an AOL user. Doesn't AOL prevent its users from using curse words? Why not scream and howl at them for encroaching on your freedom of speech??? The subscribers of this list subscribed because they wanted info about SDRE emailed to them. Many people unsubscribe each day because the content of this list is often anything BUT SDRE. It is illogical to join a list about Subject A and insist on discussing Subject B. Nobody should have to put up with that injustice. There are rules that we live by everywhere. The very same Constitution that Edgejedi quotes for his dear freedoms also lays down rules that he cannot break. There are rules everywhere, and there are rules here. If you wan to pick up the ball and run, you're in the wrong game. Try Rugby or american football. This thing about FAR has gone too "far." Find a far list (far away from here). Find your PRIVATE email buttons. What is it about "sdre-l" that you don't get? I've had it up to here (which is "far" enough). If I see one more post, ONE more, after 8pm EST USA (that's 20:00 for you military types) I'll boot anybody who posts about Far, without warning further. Okay, ignore that review on Amazon.com that I leaked. Jeremy was baffled; "Of course it's bogus!" SDRE is going into the studio in Dec. if they can find a favorable producer and the record may be out in June. The name will NOT be "The shape of sound" as claimed on that amazon.com site.
