Re: SD L body window parts needed

IIRC, doors, hoods, grilles, and fenders from early L-bodies are different
from later models. I think the switch actually happened in 1983, and not
1980. Doors and fenders are not interchangeable (easily) between the two
model year sets, except in complete sets, which is probably not worth it.

I've had an ongoing issue with the same thing but mine is
a little harder to fix. There's a metal plate that grabs
a hold of a runner keeping this mechanism on track. If it
loses grip it'll go up or down but nothing keeps it from
 falling forward.

I bought a used one recently to fix my window issue but
discovered something unusual. On the very early model
that I have (a 1979 Omni) the inner door assembly is
completely different than the ones used in the more more
common mid 1980's models (and it's too different to be
 adapted properly).

Now I need to ask the collective if anyone has access to
a driver side 1978 or 1979 Omni door that has a properly
functioning window mechanism. I could really use these
inner parts, unfortunately the later years from 1980 to
 1990 won't work.

I believe doors are the same, fenders and cowl panel changed early 83 model
year. Probably when the 83½ Shelby Chargers came out. Under hood, the
location of the washer bottle and fresh air intake for the a/c changed also.

For my situation, being a four door instead of a two door that doesn't apply.
From what I did learn the inner door mechanism did change on the 1980 and up
models.

The 1978-79 Omni Horizons were pretty odd anyway and had alot of 1970's style
parts that weren't used on the 1980's models like a hard plastic steering
wheel, a different grille tail lights, instrument cluster, upper door panels,
dashboard, fender mounted turn signal indicators, etc.

Another possible fix might be to switch doors from a later
model. While it may be tough to find a set of clean donor
doors, at least in the future the replacement parts could
 come from a larger base.

That was a consideration, but overall the white paint still looks amazingly
good and the door is rust free (unlike most of the salvage yard ones). I figure
sooner or later someone will see a 1978-79 in a yard that I can use the parts
from. Plus the Omni doors are kind of a pain to change anyway since the hinges
are welded on and who knows if they didn't change where those pieces lines up.

Those kits will bypass cetain portions of the assembly (like the part that
rolls the window up and down) but the problem with mine is the portion that
holds the window in position. A power window kit (or retro fitting a factory
one) wouldn't fix my particular issue.

Has anyone tried this on an Omni/Horizon?

I know in the 80's Carroll Shelby had one installed on one of his prototype
Shelby Chargers.

It's more complicated than that. I had a pretty good mechanic work on it for a
few weeks without lasting results.
