Over the last weekend I had the chance to visit one of these Indo-Mexican
fusion restaurant: Indimex in Greenslopes near Brisbane. It was not bad at
all. The owner apparently used to chef at a Japanese restaurant in Japan.

I also managed to convince two dinner companions who were initially
doubtful about the possibilities of Indo-Mex cuisine.

Hello Thaths,
Avatars is my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area. I'll make a trip to
Sausalito especially to eat there. The food is wonderful, they call it
Marindian :-)
The enchiladas are my favorite, covered in a tamarind and yoghurt sauce. A
wonderful blend of Mexican/Indian food.
You can sit close to the kitchen and watch them cook.
And the owner, Ashok is a great host. He will remember your name the next
time you visit and what you ate and recommend something off menu if
needed to cater for dietary needs.
I'll be back in the Bay Area in January, we'll have to go then, if you're
around.

+1 to both points. Also, while I thought the fare in Chinita's was tasty,
it didn't really resemble the flavours of the American-Mexican food I've
had in the U.S. (having never travelled to Mexico myself) in San Francisco
or New Haven (which has a great, albeit grotty-looking, joint called La
Carreta on State Street).

In California Burritos, they have this unpleasant habit of passing off
something not made of corn as tortilla chips unless you ask for the "corn
chips" instead (in which case they charge you extra).

So much potential for experimentation! :)
I would love to try my hand at some of these and come up with some good
recipes.

Perhaps a dinner soon around this theme?

I have been to both Habanero and Chinita and both are far from being
authentic.

Heh! I've given up on the restaurant idea. Though I do get the urge from
time to time. I gave up on being a restauranteur when I realized that
starting one means that I am signing up for 2-3 years of working 6 days a
week for almost no pay with no possibility of a vacation and having to
solve staff problems daily. And at the end of it there is a 15-20% chance
of being successful.

These days my culinary skills are put to simple pursuits of feeding friends

[silk] Indo-Mexican fusion restaurants and recipes

2015-10-20 Thread Thaths
Inspired by the biography of M.N.Roy for the last couple of years I've been
thinking of Indo-Mexican cuisine's possibilities. There are a handful
 of restaurants
around the world that serve this food, but
I've haven't been to any of them yet (came close to going to Avataar's in
Sausalito, but they were closed the day I walked to Sausalito from San
Francisco). Their menus seem to full of "curry" in mexican clothing
(Chicken Tikka Burrito, Prawn vindaloo enchiladas..., you get the idea). I
was thinking of food that was fused the other direction.

Some of the potential dishes I've been dreaming of:

Bhel puri with chorizo (or soyrizo), pico de gallo, sour cream

Pani puri with tomatillo rasam

Uppuma made with masa harina

...

What are some dishes that you think would make great Indo-Mexican dishes?

Bonus points if you can actually whip up and share a recipe.

Re: [silk] Indo-Mexican fusion restaurants and recipes

Habanero bills itself as "Tex-Mex" which, while potentially delicious, is
not "Mexican." (It does, however look relatively authentically Tex-Mex. The
proof is in the eating, anyone can write a menu.)

Chinita does not look especially Mexican either. The menu looks pretty
generic. "Mexican" food is pretty regional - Oaxacan food is quite
different from Yucatecan food for example. "Mexican" food makes about as
much sense as "Indian" food.

Yucatecan food.)

I've eaten at Chinita several times. The lady who designed the restaurant,
and runs it along with her husband and brother in law, is of Chinese
ethnicity but lived in the US mostly. So, I guess it's reasonable to expect
a certain degree of 'fusion-y-ness' in the food.

Having said that, at Chinita, the flan (the Mexican take on the Caramel
Custard), their braised pork tacos, and their pico di Gallo, all tasted
authentic, in an all-the-ingredients-told-a-credible-story-together way.
