One of the strengths of RCSE was that we all used our real names, not

Hi guys!

Dave invited me over to his magnificent flying site today to do some
soaring. The conditions started out kind of hot but a light breeze kicked
in and things got really comfortable.

Dave and I put up about a dozen flights each, shooting for 10min flights and
of course with a landing tape too ...which led to a landing for quarters
challenge!

I should have known better, because Dave is an excellent stick and practices
a lot too. He hit 95+ landings most of the evening! I managed one perfect
100 dead on the second to finish off a 10min flightno skeg even!

I was flying the Sharon, and he was flying the Shadow...I have to tell you I
was very much impressed with how the Shadow launched! Dave has an
auto-launcher, with is a bit spooky to use at first but you quickly realize
that it doesn't make a mistake and the model is really moving from the
moment the mechanism decided to let the winch line take possession of the
model.

I got a chance to peek at his inner sanctum (shop where he builds all your
guys sailplanes). ...super tidy, I guess that's why his builds are so
perfect!

A fun day had by all.

Thanks Dave!

Gordy

Next stop the contest in Lansing this weekend...er I mean more beaches ;-)

RE: [RCSE] Foamies versus Glass Slippers

2005-11-11 Thread Cliff Lindgren

Hi Scott,

Yes I was there. Of
course that is old news and Im sure all parties involved have resolved
the issue.I think. Yes, I believe there was some chatter regarding
banning foam gliders from flying simultaneously with the expensive glass
gliders. Most folks will exercise respect and courtesy when the two are
in the same airspace by landing. Others with no regard or through pure
ignorance usually will not have a clue and continue flying on. I have heard
that some have found that a sharp little tap on the head with a tire iron
usually has the desired effect on these individuals. Butthere
is always the thick skulled where nothing seemingly works. They are
hopelessly beyond reasoning with and are just to dunce. There are other
methods I have heard used on these individuals with limited success, that I wont
elaborate on, via this forum.

Hope this helps you.

Congratulations to the gentleman from the south
for his first place finish (I didn't get his name)

best soaring movie to date) who got a hot 2nd and
Craig Toutolmin for his 3rd place finish. Dave
Craig are both No. Cal F3F flyers and all of their
practice at Los Banos proved to pay off today.
Today's rounds were flown in 30 plus winds out of
the Northwest. Yesterday was disappointing with
light winds out of the South which does not work
for Big Creek/Davenport. There was lots of
carnage and some were spectacular to say the
least. Dave flew a Diamond and Craig flew one of
his slick home-brews. There was a great turnout
and I'll let someone else fill you in on all the
details.

No!
Please buy directly from Dave Reese at [EMAIL PROTECTED].
He worked long and hard on this project, the best damn RC glider/slope/DS/PSS/Foamie
movie to date (Hands down). This ain't no "down stream video".
This is the only movie that will get you all jazzed up about flying in
the middle of winter when there is no flying to be had. You will
not doze off, you will be inspired, you will want to build new gliders
for the upcoming season, you will watch it time and time again and see
something new each time you do. The now infamous "Golden Gate Smoke
Run" by none other than sky burning Scott Hewett with his "Higgins F-20"
is worth the price of the video alone. The man worked hard and long
on this project and it shows. It is not like other videos that have
been "thrown together" and then placed on the market to see what the market
will bear. This is entertainment/education in its purest form and
should be rewarded. The Europeans are going nuts over this thing!
Obviously they know quality when they see it. Buy directly from Dave.
He has a couple of other projects in planning that I guarantee, will
be even better productions. I can hardly wait!

Re: [RCSE] RE: DS Ratings

2000-11-05 Thread Cliff Lindgren

There is no cure, its hopeless. The "Dark Side" has claimed just one more slave to
add to its ever growing stable.
Beware young man.once you have entered the forbidden "Sacred Circle" your voyage
to the "Dark Side" has only begun. There is no
return. Normal slope flying will seem mundane, boring. When we were at Blanco this
year and the DS didn't work it was because it
was blowing over 35 mph and more like 55(south wind). Then the slope rockets came out
and we were able to BS instead of DS. We
tired of this quickly and yearned for the winds to return back to a reasonable 25 or
for the wind to switch to the north side so the
south side could be DS'd. It works even in higher velocity wind and is not as violent
as the north side. You will blow up planes
though.

Nathan Marni Woods wrote:

Dieter, having an idea that seems popular is nothing to shirk away from.

I like the idea of just talking about the DS life and wallet changing
 aspects of soaring.

Personally, I'm terrible at DS. And as far as my level of addiction, I'm
 still a "grasshopper."

I think some of the more entertaining forms of addiction levels are evident
by commitment, as well as sacrifice.

 For instance:

Level 1: Experiment with the dark side using any foamy that's available
Level 2: Purpose build a special foamy just for DS'ing. Drive around your
region looking for ridges to DS from.
Level 3: Risk an old cheap plane (like my much abused 60" Fun-1)
Level 4: The cheap old plane is sacrificed.
Level 5: Buying a new plane for the sole purpose of perfecting the DS turn.
Level 6: Getting the groove! Blowing up the new plane
Level 7: Kit bashing a perfectly solid plane like the Opus or Blade in an
effort to sustain the rigors of DS'ing.
Level 8: Blowing up this highly modified plane in spectacular and rewarding
 fashion
Level 9: Designing an entire new airfoil and wing layup for the sole
purpose of DS'ing. Spending $1500 on a TX that you can rest your hands and
forearms on to provide a more stable control platform...
Level 10: Having eye surgery to be able to focus faster and track the
plane. Commit hours of time to certain video games to enhance brain to
thumb processing speed. Personally own a radar gun wired into a computer to
track average and peak velocities in realtime.
Level 11: Move your home to a secret perfect DS ridge. Years go by, only
people who remember you are the CST delivery drivers

Ah, well, something like that. Personally, I'm only at level 3 :-) But my
Renegade is looking for a new thrill..

[RCSE] Santa Maria! or Hold on!

2000-02-20 Thread Cliff Lindgren
 exactly what
happened and it went crazy, did a wakazoid
maneuver, spinning uncontrollably and hit the face
of the slope cartwheeled up the face with stuff
flying out of it and blew over the top! End of my
flying and now the Easter egg hunt starts.
While I’m hunting Scott gets a ripping flight in
with his F-20 (I look up once in a while during
the search) and manages to land successfully. He
comes up and we finally find every piece except
for one of my elevators. No big deal. My nose
got broke off but is repairable.
So now Hewett decides that he is going to DS the
upper ridge we are now on. I launch his F-20
again and he starts making the circles. The thing
is ripping/twitching/squirrelly and terrifying!
Over rotation is the big problem on this short
winged rocket. It is a handful for Hewett!
Finally on one low pass it gets down at the tree
line and because its blue and hard to see against
the dark green he loses it for a minute, don’t ask
me how but here it comes shooting up, out of
control and it augers in nose down. We make the
trek down and Scott pulls it out (it was buried to
the wing) and says,”Oh sheet! My canopy came
off!” I’M Thinking “Wow, bummer”.
So now he starts thinking about launching his
latest creation. It’s a 63” wing he calls the Go
Go Girl and is a 63” “Sloth”. Then he starts
backtracking because the little common sense
sloper who lives on one of his shoulder says “no
Scott, don’t do it you just built it and you don’t
want to chance destroying it this early in its
life. Then the little DS devil sitting on the
other shoulder starts telling them that he’ll
never live it down unless he does and the Devil
wins the argument.
OK, I get to launch again. Here we go! Hang
on! He gets altitude, dives for the backside,
stays low and the thing just tears up the hill at
us. I am diving for cover behind him, it’s
scary! The thing is making horrible screeching
sounds like it’s in agony! He is making these
huge circles going so deep I simply can’t believe
why this thing just keeps coming up the hill on
the wrong side? Is it magic? I ‘m a firm
believer that it is. Circle after circle and its
flying like it’s on rails. Now Scott has to land
the thing. So he makes some deep circles low on
the backside trying to bleed speed coming up the
hill but it just won’t slow down enough controlled
crash. He goes even deeper and deeper coming up
the hill and finally he stuffs it in doing maybe
about 10 mph! He smiles and says, “I’ll take
that”.
I didn’t bring my wind gauge with me but we figure
it to be blowing somewhere in the 75 – 85 mph
areas today there. Now if you are a bit skeptical
and I can understand if you are I can tell you
that we have flown some of the windiest spots the
West Coast of the US has to offer. Scott
undisputedly is one of the most experienced big
air flyers I have had the pleasure to watch fly in
these conditions. Today, he stated that this is
probably the heaviest air he has ever flown in
during his RC Glider flying career and definitely
had the most vertical punch, even better than Cape
Sebastian, Oregon or Eagle Butte Washington.. I
personally watched him and Dave Reese fly in 70
mph plus at Cape Blanco, Oregon (my Kestrel wind
indicator blew up at 74 that time). This opinion
is based on today’s conditions, which are not an
everyday occurrence at Fremont Peak.
When we got back down the hill I glanced up at the
flagpole…..the flag was gone! We drove down the
hill to another one of our recently discovered DS
spots which I named the "Mother Lode" and only
flew in an average (according to my Kestrel wind
meter) 41 mph with a top gust of 55 mph. Both
Fremont Peak The Mother Lode are in the Hill
around San Juan Bautista, CA area. I must admit I
would not care to fly in these extreme conditions
on a regular basis but once in awhile really gets
the juices flowing. The only way I can sit and
write this is because of the overdose of
adrenaline today.
Thanks, I hope I didn’t bore anyone.

I would like to know of the techniques used to realign a v-tail with
symetric foils after a fuse break This would be a quality break with pieces
missing so that the fuse does'nt index completely. My current method takes
several shop hours and flying hours to get the decalage reset.

So, it seems at least one individual can appreciate my twisted sense of humor.
Thanks Scott. This whole Sal bashing thing is just
one aspect of what I was trying to convey to the exchange via the light bulb post. It
is useless and counter-productive as about
75% of all posts are. Thank God for the delete key. Unfortunately I almost wore out
my second delete key...that was until I
figured out how to filter certain folks who seem to just love to see their names and
constant ramblings about absolutely nothing
contributory, in print. I feel some folks seem to think quantity is much better than
quality. And then there are those who think
if they start rambling about some scientific equation/therory on flight that we will
all hold them in high esteem and they will be
certainly be elevated by all of us as "experts". I must admit though that I am a
guilty party also. (not as being a expert for
sure, just ramblings)But its great...no? This is America and we should all have
the same opportunity to make big fools of
ourselves just as much as the next guy!
So.who wants to take bets on what the next seemingly endless thread will be about?

Re: [RCSE] Sailboat Wings

2000-01-05 Thread Cliff Lindgren

OK, here we go. There is true wind and there is apparent wind. Apparent wind is the
wind you feel if there is no wind and you're
on a bike and you start moving forward. It feels like there is wind, right?
Sailboats use wind and forward motion to work. Proper
sail trim is extremely important to achieve maximum efficiency from any given boat.
You are manipulating your "wing/sail" with many
different lines. OK. A close hauled (point of sail into the wind) mono hull sail
boat can pretty much only go what is called hull
speed. Now, you crack off the sails a little, head off the wind a bit and you start
generating more of your own wind by gaining
more speed. This is the true wind and your forward motion combined, hence more
apparent wind and hence more speed. Anytime you
sail past where the apparent wind is on your beam you throw up your spinnaker (big
pretty sail) and you go even faster. Your sails
are still working as a wing and you are being "lifted". That is until you are running
down wind and then you only go as fast as the
true wind is blowing. You cease getting lifted by your sails anymore. Your are
"running before the wind". It doesn't matter
what kind of a boat you are on either unless you are in a situation where you have a
planing hull or there are waves and you
break-loose and start surfing. ULDB's (ultralight displacement boats) which became
extremely popular in the 70's can surf the ocean
bay waves very well. Once down wind its only as fast as the wind is blowing for
most boats. Its a pretty scary point of sail in
a blow too. In sailboat racing, un-wanted jibes while running down wind result in
what is commonly know as the "death roll" and you
can be pinned on your side if you "round down".
OK, in the medium of the ocean there is a lot of drag from the water. On land with
only three wheels on the ground there's a lot
less friction. On ice its even less. That is why extreme speeds can be achieved in a
realitivly light wind. Its can pretty much
be summed up by saying " the faster you go, the faster you go ".
OK, so now if you want to sell all of your gliders and buy a sailboat and want to live
on the wild side, buy a mutli-hulled sailboat
and go real fast. Be prepared to get wet though.
I am sure there is a much more scientific explanation and I'm looking forward to the
many theories forthcoming on this glider
exchange.

Re: [RCSE] stork glider

1999-08-11 Thread Cliff Lindgren

Gordy, I have a few questions for you. When you are preparing to do a review/write-up
on any given glider/sailplane or model
accessories, how do you go about it? Does the manufacture have a clue that you will
be reviewing his model/hardware? Does he
supply the model/hardware? Do you order the model/hardware from a distributor or go
to a hobby store and pick it up off of the
shelf? (This seems like the only fair way to give a real conclusive and totally
unbiased report, to me)
Does a manufacture ever request that you give a model or hardware a review and supply
it to you? Have you ever had to give a honest
review in writing, in a publication and tell the public the model/hardware were a
piece of junk or poorly manufactured? (In kinder
words of course) Or all reports/reviews on poorly kited, inferior workmanship or just
downright lousy products abandoned before
press.
I'm just curious. You can respond on the exchange, I think there are inquiring minds
that would like to know.
Thank you for any info.

I don't know which Stork you got but it doesn't sound anything like the one
we are seeing here in the USA. I just finished a review of the Stork for RC
Soaring Digest Magazine and communicated with editors of QFI and Aufwind as
well as a half dozen of owner/competitors who all found none of what you are
 experiencing.

Our Stork have white fuselages and no hinge tearing. Our Storks are
sailplanes, maybe the glider version isn't the same :-)

They cost us under $800 for a complete with wiring harness version. An
amazing thermal airplane! Huge lauches and hungrily consumes thermals.

There have been a few iterations of the model maybe yours is an older
version. I think I would have to 'export' it back to its nest .
