You have to loop and call GetPhonemeBlendFromSpeechClip  for each frame;
the frame is the third parameter.

The script sample from the documentation doesn't print all 13 properties
from returned from GetPhonemesFromSpeechClip, it just prints the first
three.  I mean, it's not looping over the attributes or anything, it's
literally printing the table's index 0, 1, and 2.

Also, before going into this too deeply, I would suggest looking at the
export options for Face Robot.

you'll need to have crosswalk for maya though (i.e. dotXS import)

Hi Luc-Eric,

After reading a bit better the vbscript I figure out what was going on and
I experimented a bit with mixing the PhonemeFromSpeech and the
GetPhonemeBlend, and I got interesting results.
I also realized that I would need to get, store and apply the values for
each phoneme at each frame from the results of the script, then apply that
to ( for example ) the Y position of a Null which will go from 0 to 1
accordingly to the weight of the phoneme.
I have no idea how to do that, not knowing scripting unfortunately has
always been a problem :(

Anyway I'm quite familiar with the game export process, also exporting the
game head rig to Maya as well, so that is not a problem...
The main reason for me was to speed up the lip sync process in order to be
able to export animation data to Maya from FaceRobot...


At this point I'm thinking a workaround...which in theory should be like
this ( bear with me for a minute :D )
 Phonemes are set by the position of the FaceRobot controllers around the
mouth, jaw position and tongue
 The neutral pose of the face, once the FaceRobot rig is built, is the
zero pose for everyone, and so is a zero value for the phoneme as well.
 I store into an array the values of the controller SRT ( for example for
the phoneme ah ), same thing for all the other controllers when they're
at weight 1.
 At this point in ICE I'll compare the neutral pose controller SRT to
ALL the other controller SRT ( when the phoneme weight is 1 basically ), so
that I have a blend from 0 to 1 from the neutral pose to the phoneme.
Basically by comparing the array values ( neutral to phoneme ) I should be
able to get the blend between them...
I almost never worked with arrays in ICE, but theoretically it should work
( tell me guys if I'm totally wrong )

Alternatively, using the Game Export rig, then create a set of nulls which
are parented to the game export rig bones, but in which I can
dampen/increase the position/rotation of the bones, so that I can kinda
retargeting and adjuting manually the mouth movement once I parented the
set of nulls onto my character...not very professional, but at least is
something that I can do

Any other alternatives are welcome

Proof of concept - Dynamic normal maps using Facerobot + Unreal Engine 4

Hi guys,

Just want to share one of my last experiments.

It is a system which allows dynamic normal maps on a character ( using
Facerobot ) by enhancing the facial expressions using normal maps which are
triggered when a specific expression is applied ( or is close to that
expression ).

The system is completely dynamic, means that no manual keyframe are added.

The purpose is to enhance facial expression for both main characters and
npc in both game sequences and cinematics.

Soon a tech demo showing its full functions :)

Thanks Mirko,
I already tried to modify the envelopes afterwards but it didn't work,the
main problem is right at the first envelope stage,where the mouth operator
choose which vertex are assigned to upper and lower teeth
With the mouth controls showned in the videos they give you control on the
overall shape of the lips,but still the main problem of the vertex being
moved around is still there
I guess I have to make the meshes with the lips a bit.open in order to
avoid the mixing of lower and upper enveloped vertex

If anyone has an efficient solution to solve this problem.right at the
beginning please share :-)

I'm testing a couple of characters facial rig using Facerobot

So far everything looks good, but on some of the characters I have an
annoying issue, which is related to the mouth

Whenever I try to open the jaw the lower lips moves accordingly, but I
notice the weight on the lips are not correct, since the lower lips move
some of the vertex of the upper lips, so I end up having annoying upper
lips vertex moving around when the mouth is open

I solved this problem by opening a little bit the mouth before the
enveloping stage, or alternatively using the sculpt or a weightmap via a
smooth operator on that area

Question is: is there a way to modify the enveloping on the lips
controllers ( soft tissue? ) in order to do just an ordinary envelope
weighting correction?
I try using the Mouth tab to solve this, but so far any attempts failed

wrinkles and mouth works
I have no idea what happened but it works!

Gear_mc and FaceRobot Facerig components - some advices

Hi guys,
So I'm building both facial rigs using FaceRobot and Gear_mc and I would
like to ask you some things regarding some features on both of them

Gear_mc:

I've built the eyes, mouth and eyebrow controllers and they work pretty
good, now I need to build the eye directionality controller ( eyes look at
), the nose controllers and hopefully something that resemble the FaceRobot
wrinkle tool, something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bJnvUZ0U88 @2.40
or if the envelope weights could easily solve the mouth/forhead/aread
below the forhead wrinkles problem that allows the skin to compress and
stretch which works very good in FR

Since is the first time that I'm building a facial rig with Gear I would
like to know what is the best approach to build my missing controllers, if
there are guides within Gear itself suited for the nose and eye
directionality...could be a dumb question, but I would like to avoid
spending 2 days finding out the best solution for an eye directionality
controller when there is already something buit-in inside Gear ;)

Also since I have multiple humanoid characters I'll save the
eyes/mouth/eyebrow and eventually eye directionality and nose guides as a
model, in order to re-use the guides for another character without building
everything from scratch again, but I was wondering if is possible to let
Gear ( or just a python script ) build the entire guides all at once (
with all the parenting and setup )

Facerobot:
I suppose because of the soft tissue every time I try to export the FR rig
to a game engine the weights are completely f*cked up, and usually I can
see both the FR head mesh and the mesh that FR generates with the soft
tissue feature, which I'm not able to find where is it in the explorer
I already solve that issue using the game export function, it works very
nice and do not cause problems, but every time I have to re-merge the head
with the body, adjust the envelope weights again on the neck, and then
export the entire character, which is fine for a 30second animation, but if
you have 300 facial mocap ane everytime you have to do the same
re-merge/envelope adjustment it becomes really frustrating
Except the FR point cache option ( the video is on vimeo ) is there a way
to succesfully simplify the FR rig, be able to merge the FR head with the
body and do not screw the facerig created with FR?

I'm leaning towards Gear for my facial rigs, but I would like to know if
FaceRobot could be the quick and dirty solution to my needs

Hi having a strange issue with Facerobot

I'm rigging the same face with both Gear and Facerobot to see which one is
the best solution for my needs, I'm following the videotutorials on youtube
from SoftimageHowsTo and I would like to paint the wrinkle maps

As soon as I choose to do wrinkle paint or mouth paint basically the paint
tool doesn't work at all

On the Mouth paint option basically it doesn't affect the painted region (
nor delete or smooth, nor add )

On the wrinkle paint I cannot see at all the classic yellow lines that
defines the wrinkle themselfat first I tought that was a graphic
glitch, but even if I paint without seeing what I'm painting and I test the
rig the wrinkle paint is not there at all

I think I had the same issue once.
It may have been due to topo edits combined with a 'freeze/freezeM I may have 
done.
I realized the problem  and reverted to a previous scene.

the flag makes XSI connect to the FaceRobot workgroup, and all the code to
face robot is in that workgroup.  I don't have the time to test it, but in
theory if the workgroup is not present I think it could just do nothing and
fail gracefully.  If that doesn't work, actually enabling face robot on the
render farm could fix it, because I recall that it's pretty drastic when
face robot needs to be enabled during scene load: I think it cancels the
scene load, enable the workgroup, and load the scene again.  Perhaps some
software are parsing the log output of xsibatch and finding something they
don't like.  It's also possible that an error message box poped up, and
that aborts xsibatch.

given the insidious behaviour of FaceRobot, this should really be given some 
thought for the future.

In every studio I went since FaceRobot exists, it has been perceived as 
something akin to a virus, spontaneously messing around and infiltrating 
production scenes. Every single production, some time is spent to keep it out 
reliably and do some housekeeping after it reared its ugly head. I think many 
people don’t want anything to do with it because of this. It’s the obnoxious 
child that everyone dislikes.
Surely it could be taught more appropriate out of the box behaviour?

I mean, if ICE was acting like that, people would be on the barricades, raiding 
what’s left of Softimage headquarters.

Yeah we've had this before. Normally just disabling facerobot (whilst switched 
to softimage layout) and then saving (probably a new version is safer) tends to 
get rid of it. Also try unloading it in your workgroups and deleting the custom

Have to agree. For all the good that face robot can do. Especially with 
students who hit the incorrect buttons on occasions its a lifetime of grief 
trying to get rid of the damn thing. Face Robot should not have a default key 
binding. Plain and simple. Also when you deactivate face robot you should be 
given a prompt to remove the rest of its infection from the file.

Hi Stephen

That’s the theory. In practice not so much. We have spent hours trying to 
remove it from files, and in one case last year it prevented one of the 
students from using the render farm. No matter what we did it kept coming back.

you're using reference models, you'll need to save those too again because
the face robot flag is on models.

I think thats the main problem. To get rid of face robot now, one would
have to access every scene and model in the project and delete all the
appropriate property's, and models which in itself is a mammoth task. And
if by any chance you skipped one thing your back at square one, because all
it takes is one model somewhere to infect everything again...

It's situations like this where having an ASCII file format (or equivalent) 
would save a LOT of hassle and stress in production as you could easily write a 
parser to strip out the problematic data and run the batch quickly.  Having to 
go through XSIBatch is horribly slooowww and problematic.

if all there really is, is a custom property, 
then the problem lies rather with softimage’s behaviour when coming across it...

it could just ignore this property, unless one deliberately goes to the 
facerobot layout and selects a scene/model to be “faceroboted”.

sure, doing the cleanup on a scene is not so much work (when it works)
but the point is – the property spreads on scenes/models and disrupts work – 
when all that really happened is a distracted artist hitting the shortcut for 
the facerobot layout by mistake.
Doesn’t happen like that with simulation, doesn’t happen with hair. Doesn’t 
happen with using any plugins or renderers. 
Custom properties can get created all over the place, but they don’t generally 
cause trouble, except for the occasional error message.

It's not the custom property. There's a flag inside the .scn/.emdl file
that specifies whether or not Face Robot is required by the asset. The
Enable/Disable menu command is how you set that flag.

Had exactly the same issue as Alan. We were trialing Royal Render at the time. 
It also didnt work in xsi batch called from a dos batch file.(command line). 
Its the same if you happen to have one of the students use the free version and 
try and batch render in the EDU version.

We are having a awesome time as someone in the early phases of the project
had it open somewhere in their scene and now it has reared its ugly
tentacles into the whole project, literally every model, scene and project
have been infected, in all this chaos i am sure i even saw it initialize
once when someone opened up after effects...

Issue with referenced Facerobot rig
