Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.

2022-04-17 Thread P Nelson

I know nothing about Unix or Linux, and I was able to set up
Picoreplayer running LMS on a Pi 3B+ in an hour or two. I had one
problem getting Samba to work, but it was due to me not making sure the
syntax on two fields was not exactly the name; one field had an
upper-case letter while the other field did not.

However, in my case I do not use a NAS, but an attached hard drive
(containing my music) to the Pi. I use Samba to transfer new music from
my Windows machine to the hard drive on the Pi.

Don't be scared, it is doable even for the newbie. The people on this
forum on wonderful and will help if you run into problems.

I guess the issue right now is finding a Pi at a reasonable cost.

As others have said, any old pi in Awstralia will do :)

This link may help a little ?

I have a self contained rpi b revision 000e (aka The Turtle) running LMS
v8.3.0 and squeezelite as a headphone system.

Mostly internet streaming, but close enough for jazz :p

Doh!! I apologize for any confusion (and for my own - of course, all of the
outputs on the Touch are for connections to external sources like a stereo
system just like on my old, lamented, Squeezebox Classic).

The touch has RCA outputs. "Inputs" was what was being questioned. Your
quote: -"You can use a 1/8" jack
to RCA audio cable to get from the RPi to the Touch's RCA inputs." -

I think what the OP wants is to use ethernet/wifi to go from the pi
(running LMS) to the touch, then the touch digital or RCA outputs to his
kit.

Not trying to be critical, mind you...:)

I think the shortage is everywhere. But, you don't necessarily need the
latest and greatest. I run one system on a 4, the other on a 3b+ and I
only really notice any difference during library scan and for me it's
insignificant.

Others can chime in, but I think you can actually run it on just about
any model (correction requested), so you could get a "less desirable" on
the 2nd hand market and switch over to something better later.

I think you might be overestimating what's involved to setup
PiCorePlayer on an rpi running LMS, with your NAS mounted. pCP is GUI
based and if all goes well, if setting up just a LMS server, you should
be up quite quickly. For those experienced in building them, < 1 hour.
It seems that mounting the drives can get tricky for some. I use a USB
HDD no problem.

Check out the "getting started" page:
https://docs.picoreplayer.org/getting-started/ there are also a few
videos on youtube you can take a peek at to see what's involved.

There is also the power consumption advantage to consider I went from
having my win 7 machine have to be on in order to listen to music to pcP
running 24/7. I measured the power difference once, but forgot where I
put those notes

What do you mean by long term solution ?

Windows 10 support ends in Oct 2025
Will you get a free upgrade to Win11 with refurbished PC ?
If PC is only a LMS server - Windows adds a lot of overhead which will
not be used.

2022-04-16 Thread Guy Stalnaker
David ... that's where piCorePlayer really shines. You can use a 1/8" jack
to RCA audio cable to get from the RPi to the Touch's RCA inputs. That gets
you going (you're initial cost is I'd think less than a Win10 system with
RPi & case). Later if you want you buy an add-on audio hardware card (like
my HiFiBerry) for digital or optical outputs. It is certainly not required
(that was the setup I used for my 2nd RPi in my bedroom using a set of
computer speakers)

If you've a desktop already you may need an SD card adapter (to burn pCP to
a microSD card that goes into the RPi) if one isn't supplied with the
desktop computer. If you've a laptop it may have the SD card reader already.

piCorePlayer rides atop the underlying OS so you don't need to futz with
it. You'll have to create the NAS share that LMS will use, then configure
it in the LMS settings in pCP.

If you add additional audio hardware later you have to configure
SqueezeLite for it, but pCP makes that easy with builtin config options for
many such add-ons (I selected my HiFiBerry DAC from that dropdown in pCP,
restarted, and it worked).

If for whatever reason you don't want the RPi solution, your
Windows-based proposal will also work. As said above, you can still use
your NAS for storage.

Plenty of Windows mini-PCs on Amazon. Get one pre-installed with Win 10
Pro so you can access it via Remote Desktop. (Win 10 Home does not
support remote access unless you run a third-party app like VNC,)

Came here to say this.

I've been a RPi/piCorePlayer user for years. The RPi connects directly to
my ZyXel NAS for music files and the HiFiBerry DAC optical out to my stereo
receiver (they sit side by side next to my living room stereo & also next
to my DSL router).

PiCorePlayer is excellent & set up for both SqueezeLite (software
SqueezeBox emulater) & LMS. I've a 2nd RPi in my bedroom connected via
WiFi.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Is this a good or bad idea? LMS and Windows 10 question.

2022-04-16 Thread DavidBullock62

I have been a Squeezebox touch user for well over a decade, and find
myself completely thwarted by my problems with the LMS on my Synology
DS418j.

So, I either sell my Touch and start from scratch again with something
like a PecanPi, or I find another solution for LMS.

So, this is my latest iteration in a possible solution.

I shall give you a brief topology. My home has a full cat6 network that
runs to a central cabinet downstairs. I have my Touch connected to my
stereo, and it is connected via a cat 6 cable.

Solution:

1) Buy a cheap refurbished Dell OptiFlex 9020 i7 small form factor for
under $200 with Windows 10 already installed.
2) Throw in two 1 TB HDD (I believe SSD are not necessary for this
purpose) probably around $150
3) Install LMS and copy my music library from my NAS to the Dell.
4) put it in the server cabinet.
5) Live happily ever after.

Does this sound like a viable, long term solution, or is there a simpler
turnkey solution that will ensure longevity, or am I fighting a loosing
battle?

Thank you in advance for your help on this.
