Thanks. I found the extensions.prefs also.
For some reason, last time I tried a reinstall without the
InstalledPlugins in the Cache I had to reset my 3rd party plugin
selections, which is why I copied over from a backup of the Cache.

Anyway, I see your point in not copying over to the Cache from a backup
(and no longer am I backing up the Cache)
If I need to reselect 3rd party plug-ins on a re-install, no problem
with that, not like I reinstall all that often

Thanks

Is it possible to store the prefs folder in a specified location?

That's the --prefsdir startup parameter.

If I could move the prefs folder to C;\Google Drive\Prefs, I could sync
the settings across both LMS as well, so adding a favourite at one
location would appear in the other etc.

Is that possible?

I wouldn't do that, as at least the server_uuid must be unique, or
you'll sooner or later face trouble.

There's a plugin/state.prefs file which defines which plugins are installed.

Michael, Tony, Paul;

Thanks for the info and the clarifications. I have enough info to
experiment with. I have an extra Pi that I use to play around with, I'll
try some backup scenarios and install on a fresh LMS on the extra Pi,
comepare it to a server LMS and see what works best for me.

Cheers;

Is it possible to store the prefs folder in a specified location?

My reason for asking is that I run two LMS at different locations, they
each have a local copy of my music which are sync'd via google drive.

So, my music is stored in C:\Google Drive\Music on each LMS and Google
back-up & sync sorts out the sync, so if I add an album to either LMS,
it ripples across the cloud to the other server, keeping them alligned.
It works well and gives the added bonus of having x3 copies of my music
(LMS1, LMS2 and Google Drive in the cloud).

If I could move the prefs folder to C;\Google Drive\Prefs, I could sync
the settings across both LMS as well, so adding a favourite at one
location would appear in the other etc.

Is that possible?

plugins would be re-download. Ads you saying the only proper way is to
re-select the 3rd party plugins after a re-install?

Where are the 3rd party plugins? I've only been able to locate them
(pCP) in slimserver/cache/InstalledPlugins

That's correct. But that folder is managed by the plugin installer. If
you copy stuff there manually, it might get removed again, or
installation of updates may fail or whatever. Just leave the plugin
installation to the plugin manager. Don't mess with that folder.

Michael, I am having trouble understanding your response, in particular
the first sentence

My "absolutely not" was in response to your "I realize much of the
"prefs" folder is going to be unique to each version of LMS (right?)".
What I wanted to say is that you can very well copy prefs from one
computer to another - with my aforementioned exceptions.

I guess my question is this: I save favorites.opml. In addition I would
like to save saved podcasts, and plugins/repositories if possible,
settings, if possible, etc.

Yep, that's mostly possible. A fav pointing to a track which does not
exist in a different place would obviously not work, though.

Of this:
31463
is there anything that can be safely saved and moved to another system,
for either:
* two running same LMS

See my previous comment: you can copy the prefs folder, but would have
to remove any path, and the server_uuid from server.prefs.

But don't copy the Cache folder.

* to rebuild a LMS (say SD card failure)

Prefs again. The cache should be re-built automatically.

In your case with two isolated systems (they cannot reach each other -
and the players cannot reach the other LMS) then you really could copy
over the files without going through the subsequent edit process that
Michael described.

The LMS systems would have the same name - but rather than Home and
Cabin simply call it/them MusicServer or similar.

If the answer is "nothing really" thats fine, just wondering. Is there a
wiki page or another post that describes what is in each folder? Maybe
that would help.

Do not mess with the cache folder. Not only can it be pretty large, but
it's ephemeral data only.

In particular don't try to replicate the InstalledPlugins folder from in
there. It's asking for trouble in future updates or installation of plugins.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What preferences can be backed up/restored, are portable?

2020-09-04 Thread Redrum

I have wondered this for a while

I am running LMS two seperate pcp systems, with the pcp configured as a
server only, USB HDD's contain the library. Players are the usual touch,
boom, radio, receivers...The two systems are located 250 miles apart,
one at home, one in a cabin. I want to make them identical so I mirror
the library, and backup and mirror favorites.opml using a seperate HDD I
take back and forth. I don't do it over the web as most of the power is
shut down at one location while we are at the other.

I also had trouble upgrading from LMS 7.2 to 7.3, so I just did a new SD
with LMS 8.0, and copied over favorites, but of course I had to rebuild
plugins, repositories, setting, etc. I also found I had lost my podcasts
(but there weren't many).

I realize much of the "prefs" folder is going to be unique to each
version of LMS (right?), but I am wondering, are their subfolders or
other files that will port, and are version independent (similar to
favorites)? It would be great if I could preserve any of:

Podcasts
Plugins
Repositories
Other settings, for example, the display format of my boom - e.g. Song
(Artist), small VU, etc.

Even if there is a way to export to a text file, that I could reference
if I have to rebuild, that's a start.

Thanks;

Jim
