Done, but no luck. I found a 7360x3682 png file, 147 MB, which should
qualify as insanely large. LMS loaded it, slowly, and displayed it
without any obvious distress. Nothing in the log. If any logging changes
would help, I'll be happy to try again.

Whatever caused large images to crash LMS in the past, as I have
experienced, it must have been filed. I'm running today's build of 8.3.

These are images in a music folder, displayed through the Local artwork
link in Song Info. Bob is talking about images embedded in music files,
so there are differences.

Why runs every 5 seconds ?
No audio track will change every 5 secs !!

IIRC There were other suggestion made to to make it a proper script and
deal with real states (e.g. what to display if player is stopped, when

Thanks. But to single out the problem I started running only one client
to find the one that's causing the problem. Your question about what
clients i'm using made me realize I forgot to turn off one
client/script.
It's a LUA that i got from @bpa in this thread

Or do you have an explanation?
When the error happens I also get failed to retrieve in the web

The lua script is maybe locking the MAI interface?

I only added the second tip and it was running fine. But because i'm
using darkice at the moment I have no use for it, because my ices2
client is very unstable. It even locks my terminal until I kill it
(running in the background.

To come back to your question about the clients; I'm using
squeezelite-x on windows, chrome on the mac/android and a squeezebox
radio. And the precompiled squeezelite connecting to the default output
being catched with darkice going to icecast.

I've uploaded the script to your dropbox together with the zipped
logfile.

Thanks in advance.

The OP was given another Linux based solution for metadata - I thought
they had gone with that.

I think "ncat" has closing connection down issues and sometimes Windows
is not good at frequent TCP setups.
"ncat" provided a simple scripting facility without having to installing
Python or write a Powershell script.
I think the ncat Lua scripts are intended to be linear - do one action -
couldn't see how to do loops safely in the script as I didn't any "read
with timeout" facility.

The script was just a PoC for a request for a oneline request to get
playing data and it must runon WINDOWS.

There are plenty of things to be done to make it better (e..g. validate
check the MAC address)

As the file is now being used for metadata of a playing stream, I'm
guessing there is an "outer loop" somewhere repeatedly calling this
"ncat command. The problem could be in the repeatedly calling. Could it
be calling too often - not shutting down TCP connections properly (it is
an issue with ncat scripts). Windows may also be a factor.

Correction to the above, I overlooked the following two lines in the

I also tried to display a 20 MB jpg file with the absurd dimensions
18150x3630. It was slow to display and while processing it LMS stopped
responding to input. Material skin reported that it had lost contact
with the server. But there were no errors in the log. When LMS finally
responded to input again, The "now playing" marker had moved to the end

Have you never faced failure to restart LMS once you've stopped it? I'm
seeing it complain about "another version running", though there's no
process using LMS' ports. I've seen this happen with the custum built

theory it should run anywhere, no matter where it's stored :-(.

I wouldn't be so sure. I've known Windows to leave TCP connections
hanging, so script may close but for a while after closing the
connection is half in place and maybe causing the error.

AFAIK there is no fixed limit, but as coverart is resized to match the
player's capabilities and I run LMS on a small CPU I make a habit of
reviewing the music files and resize the art to match the maximum
display size which is 300x300 for the image included in the music file
(used by the player) and 800x800 for the folder (used by the web GUI).

You don't want it change the artist album and track 20 seconds into the

By the way read my remark to Michael I forgot to add that the errors

I'm running everything on the RPI now. There is also an ncat for the PI.
That was my aim. The windows VM is no longer in play.
The other metadata script was not working well for me. I don't know why.
Different platform? It was presented in combination with ices2. which
also did not work for me.
Just to be clear i'm not blaming anyone. I'm very thankful for all the
help i already received.

My script to loop looked liked this;

Code:

#!/bin/bash
  while [ 1 ]; do ncat 192.168.1.29 9090 --lua-exec cli_status.lua >/dev/null

I probably first need to figure out how to reproduce it with the current
build. It may have occurred when LMS was still configured to scan all
my media files, and this includes some very large image and video files.
I don't think so, because the timestamps seems to be after I'd updated
the media paths. But I'm investigating...

Ok, it occurs on the nightly builds as well. I enabled logging, and
tracked down the file.

It was an ogg file, and although the embedded artwork displayed without
issue in my other media player, I just updated the art and rescanned.
Error gone. It would be good if that error message included the file
name, so that debug logging didn't need to change to identify the
culprit.

So, I'm back to the experimental build, and the full wipe/re-scan had no
complaint.

OK sure, I will try.
I have one more observation. I have all my URL's behind NGINX proxy
manager with https
If I look into my browser console (f12) i see on the jason request

Code:

VM12:1 POST https://lms.rpi-lite.lan/jsonrpc.js 502

If i go straight to http:/192.198.1,29:9000 see

Code:

POST http://192.168.1.29:9000/jsonrpc.js net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

As the time passes I now only get errors with every request on the bio.

Thanks for that reality check. That makes a lot of sense, and a lot more
sense than keeping old graphics files from the days before I used LMS
and wasn't concerned about viewing them anywhere but on the desktop
where my music library was stored in those days. The problem here is
entirely user-generated, like problems with outdated and incompatible
metadata tags. In recent years, I have gone through my collection,
attempting to get all the tags in order, and on another occasion, trying
to correct problems with displayed cover art.

Now it's time to deal with the other graphics files in the folders. Not
the cover art, but images that can be displayed through the "Local
artwork" link in "Song Info." (Is this link only available if you have
the Music and Artists Information plugin installed? I've been using MAI
so long, I don't remember.) These images can be much larger than
800x800, and sometimes greater detail is appropriate. But there is no
point in having files as large as the ones I mentioned earlier.

LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players,
occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic.

Only the issue mentioned above, when I tried to abort the scan, I could
not, and at that point, I could not stop LMS via the control panel, so I
whacked it with kill -9.

Ok, that makes the difference: with the firewall up I'd be able to run
LMS once from my dev folder, then would have to reboot the machine. With
firewall off, no such issue.

Now even more interesting: if I first add the shipped version to the
firewall allow list, then start, I'm fine. If I do the same with a copy
in my dev or downloads folder, then even the allow list wouldn't help.
If that was reproducible, then we could live with that. But I better
figure out how to automate the firewall configuration bit.
