I think the lack of a reliable messaging system is really going to impact interest in Freenet. Unfortunately, FMS is not easily usable by ordinary end users, and it is not packaged with the core software. I don't know what to do about this problem, other than figure out some way to get Frost working again. This is really too bad, because the core functionality of Freenet seems to be improving. I am trying to set up my node so a client on a separate machine on my LAN can browse Freenet through FProxy. I was able to do this with FCP by changing the 'IP address to bind to' from: 127.0.0.1,0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 to 192.168.1.103,127.0.0.1,0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 However, when I make the same change to FProxy, I get an error message: "Your configuration changes were applied with the following exceptions: bindTo Could not change FProxy bind address: Protocol family not supported." But when I enter 'netstat -an' in a command window, I see: TCP127.0.0.1: 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING TCP127.0.0.1: 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING TCP127.0.0.1: 127.0.0.1:3158 ESTABLISHED TCP127.0.0.1: 127.0.0.1:3159 ESTABLISHED TCP192.168.1.103: 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING However, I cannot in fact connect to FProxy either through the 127.0.0.1 loopback or the 192.168.1.103 LAN address. When you use Freenet .7, you are testing an alpha, and an early alpha at that. They have not yet coded the promised opennet and onion premix routing, but are concentrating on getting the Darknet to work. If you want something that is usable and stable, and would prefer not to be part of a software development team, Freenet .5 still works. I am trying to find a way to get .5 to work properly before trying .7. My home network has 4 machines, using Suse Linux 10 and Windows 2K. I have installed Freenet .5 on a Win2K machine. I am able to access the internet from the other machines at the time I start Freenet. However, after Freenet runs for a few hours, the other machines lose connectivity. On the Freenet machine, I have about 50-100 connections. When I stop Freenet, the other machines usually don't work at all, or only work with a few IPs. When I turn off the Freenet machine and reboot the others, they don't DHCP properly and don't get a valid subnet address. My connection is a cable modem into an old Linksys router, a 4-port befsr41 from the year 2000. The only solution is to unplug the cable modem from the router, turn the router off, wait for the cable modem to reset itself, and then restart everything. I seem to recall something about this from previous discussions - some routers can't handle that many connections - so I think the router is at fault. I couldn't find anything searching through archived posts; is anyone familiar with this problem? Would a more modern router be the cure? Some guy at work gave me this one three years ago because it was obsolete, but it had performed OK until it encountered Freenet.

You might want to try looking for an alternative open-source firmware for it that fixes the problem. Well, that certainly doesn't sound good. But while I'm a fan of open-source, I think mixing it with old hardware might lead to even more difficulties. I'd rather look into D-Link, Netgear and Belkin. What is everyone using? [freenet-support] Running a node again
For a long time, I didn't run a node for lack of a suitable machine and bandwidth. I recently picked up an old P4 1.8 Optiplex with 256M, which is had intended to use for something else, but when that fell through I decided to play around with Freenet on it. I wanted to redo what I had done before to see if it still worked and review Freenet basicst, so I installed a small partition of Win2K, downloaded Freenet 5106 and the latest Frost, and installed. The help files are still hit or miss, and the Wiki is only for .7, so I just did a hack install and got the thing going. Messages are appearing in Frost, so I'm going to give it the 24-hour breakin run and make sure it works properly before going on. It does take all 256 meg of memory and uses 100% of the CPU, but since I spent $117 to purchase a dedicated Freenet server, I don't care. Here are my questions: 1. The default datastore is on the C; partition and is only 512 meg. How do I move it to another partition and give it more room? Can I change that only, or do I have to move everything? 2. If I can't retrieve a lot of content after 24 hours of Frost board refreshing, is that me or is that because Freenet users are shutting down the .5 nodes in favor of .7? 3. The new version of Frost works with .5 and .7, and you can move your board files from .5 to .7. Does this mean the boards on .7 will have the same names and work with the same keys? I'm sure I'll have more questoins when I put up a partition of Linux and attempt to get .7 running. That ought to be funI won't know if it's my pitiful skillset as a Linux SA or the new software acting up. -vinyl1

I think they got rid of transient nodes quite a while back, maybe about a year ago. I have a similar machine with Win2K and dialup, and can't get anywhere. I'm not surprised that I can't retrieve much freesite content, although surprisingly I can get a fair number of Frost messages. What baffled me is that I was unable to insert a small (1.9 meg) file with FUQID. After configuring so that FUQID connects to my client port correctly, it goes ahead and opens ten threads, but all the insert attempts with them fail and they keep retrying and failing again. I used to be able to insert easily, and I have retrieved 30 meg files running overnight. I'll try with some new seed nodes. So it seems like FUQID is not connecting to my (transient) Freenet node at all. In my case, this could be firewall-related; ZoneAlarm is probably protecting my TCP/IP stack a bit too aggressively. Either that, or FUQID trying to connect to the wrong port. I'll check the client port in my Freenet node and make sure it's accessible. How does FUQID know which port to use? Is there some way to learn Freenet installation/configuration/general architecture other than reading the code? I haven't really been able to find documentation at the relevant level of detail. I would imagine that the problem is a lot of users running nodes with older, incompatible releases. If part of the content is only stored on such nodes, the chance of a user with the new release being able to retrieve is very slim. If everyone was up to date, I don't think there would be a problem. A good test would be to insert new content through an up-to-date node. Other users using up-to-date nodes should be able to retrieve it quickly. I agree, there should be a way to notify users of older releases that they should update their nodes. Perhaps a broadcast feature? OK, I have the latest build (5074), the latest seed nodes, the latest everything I could find as of today, 3/8/2004 On the Web interface, I can't load The Freedom Engine, Dolphin's Free Index, and Content of Evil. I can load the Freenet Help Index and YoYo. This is possibly due to unreachable, out-of-date nodes. The stuff that does load seems to work better than before. However, since I have plenty of connections, I am a little surprised I can't insert with FUQID. It used to work OK, although slowly, for viewing content and using FUQID and Frost. I can see why FUQID might not be able to retrieve old content, but I cannot see why FUQID won't insert, unless it has hard-coded node IP addresses compiled into it. If that is the case then I agree that there should be some way to either auto update or to message people that their node is obsolete.
