EarthLink's online Web chat problems?

2009-11-17 Thread Ant

Hello

Is anyone else having problems using EarthLink's online Web chat on
http://kb.earthlink.net/mi/mi.asp?route=chat with Mozilla's old Web
browsers (SeaMonkey v1.1.18 and Firefox v2.0.0.20)? It doesn't seem to
load all the way and I never get anyone nor does it finish. It worked
fine in Internet Explorer v6.0 SP3 though.

Thank you in advance. :)

Bookmark flyouts

2009-11-17 Thread Glenn (formerly speak...@off--the--record.org)
I hadn't been following along with SeaMonkey for a while, just using an
old version, and now I see 2.0 is out, so I decided to upgrade!

It didn't import my profile (which is in a non-standard place), but just
creating a new profile using that directory seems to mostly work

But when I click on the bookmark toolbar, which consists of several
folder icon groups, and also several individual bookmarks, the ones that
are folders drop-down a list of their contents... some of them, maybe
even most, produce a flyout menu for each of their subgroups... but some
that used to in SeaMonkey 1.1.6, do not in SeaMonkey 2.0.

Is this a known bug? A result of my profile reuse? Or?

Here's some additional info, when these panes go blank I see that SM
2.0 is compacting or just finished compacting folders. I don't
remember 1.1.18 doing this while compacting folders and when 2.0 does
this if I have a message open in the message pane and both panes go
blank, if and when the list pane does fill back in the message pane is
blank as if I had just clicked on the folder.

SM 2.0 -- truncated Inbox problem on getting pop3 mail

2009-11-17 Thread Bob Fleischer
Several times with SM 2.0 I have received the message Alert: There was an
error truncating the Inbox after filtering a message to the folder 'k4p'.
You may need to shutdown SeaMonkey and delete INBOX.msf.

Aside from the fact that it should no longer be necessary to shutdown
SeaMonkey and delete INBOX.msf (since one can rebuild the index from within
SeaMonkey), why does this happen? I have a high volume of email and a lot
of filter rules (about 20) with mail being sorted to a lot of folders.

I used to get this message only on my laptop when fetching mail over dialup
(with SM 1.1.18). Now I can get it (occasionally -- about once a day) on my
desktop on cable internet.

I get this message also. I didn't use to make a difference if it was in
Drafts folder in your email you could save a Draft and send it from that
folder. there is no Drafts folder news groups and you can't make a sub
folder in newsgroups which is what the Drafts folder is. And what if
defaults to when setting up. I too, use a Mac. Would using Local Folder
allow saving a Draft that could be sent to news??

I find it very useful as I have Lightning's calendar loaded and if I
choose to invoke it I can toggle between my mail or my calendar and in
my browser I never open a new window just a new tab, much handier in MY
opinion. We all have our preferences, there is a lot of things I use and
many I do not but I do not insist that those I do not use be taken out
just because I do not use them.
JAS

If I want to look at a Calendar I can through Yahoo widgets. I have two
one is a Yahoo Calendar, the other is a Google Calendar I do that so if
one crash at main site I can use the other to rebuild a new one.

Its one thing if you add on an extension such as lightning have it add
the tab. But those of use not interested in keeping track of every
second we take a Breath just don't bother us with fluff not needed or
wanted. Thank goodness we can still turn off tabs.

and for What Reason.

Yes there is a tab bar, but only one tab is open. From here, if I
choose to hide the tab bar when only one tab is open, Mail/News honors
that, so if tabs are not being used, it should not display.

See other messages for possible uses of tabs in Mail/News. Actually,
this has been a much asked for feature, and has great possibilities.

Here have all these request come from?? Of Course I've not posted her
for nearly two years with a few minor exception until SM2 Final came
out. I see no valid reason of tabs in email and news. I've pondered the
idea and it just seem useless, I read and respond to one email /News
post at a time. I just don't see the value. I find if I try to do too
many things at one time, I tend to make more mistakes than usual.

Yes it does, it is the Default after all. ;) It seems to be the default
on Windows and Linux, as well as OS X. The default theme is geared to
the OS, and looks rather different depending on the OS, but it is the
default.

Modern Theme is available. You might check Sailfish's site for some others:

http://www.projectit.com/

From communicating with Pat, Simple Green and Cold Fusion are not going
to be ported to SeaMonkey. They are based on browser only versions of
Netscape, and cannot be ported easily to the suite. However, there are
several other options, Sky Pilot, and Modern Mozillium as a couple of
examples.

I have become very fond of the Venerable Modern theme. I also hove a
fondness for KaiRo's Star Trek theme, though I admit it is a bit of an
acquired taste.

Just wondering since Mozilla doesn't update and support Firefox

When KaiRo gets back from his holiday, we will re-look at the situation.
Basically Mozilla itself had abandoned the Gecko 1.8.1 platform some
time ago but we were still getting some security fixes from Linux
vendors who continued to upstream their fixes for a while. This seems to
have dried up. We are trying to get a reply from the contact
representing the consortium of Linux vendors that have long lived stable
branches to see how much longer they will maintain this Gecko branch or
if it has been abandoned completely. Unfortunately I fear that the
latter is the case.

Phil

So were stuck with this ver 2, reminds me of a problem we had with a
Netscape version way back, also a ver 2 I think or was it ver 3?
Netscape lost a great deal of support and ground to ie after that
particular disastrous version.

Does anyone know of another Browser suite that allows multiple profiles?
Sorry for pointing to the obvious, but do you have any serious reason to
drop SM 1.1.18? I cannot imagine why you consider yourself stuck with
version 2. Going back to SM 1.1.18 should not be difficult, even if you
did not save your profile before going to SM 2.0.

It will be a long while before SM 1.x is so outdated that it cannot be
used reliably on the vast majority of sites. Safety is not either a
serious issue with the normal array of protections serious surfers use.
So the time you will spend restoring SM 1xx will not be wasted time.

I go back to Netscape 3.2 and do not remember a disastrous version ...
but I cannot say I tried them all. I believe you might be referring to
6.x when AOL interfered with Netscape.

I never move to a newer version without making sure I can return to the
previous one and I am sure I am glad I did so for Vista!

Ya you're correct, it was version six, I have used Netscape since the
beginning, I could not remember, only that there was a very disastrous
version, believe it or not I was so anti ms then (for killing my
browser) I stuck with it until last ver 7 upgrade, ver 8 was not used by
me, then went to Mozilla, I need/want the multiple profiles. If I recall
Netscape skipped version 5? I have returned to SM 1.1 until someone
wakes up and includes migration of all profiles. I have always kept my
profiles separately as soon as I knew how to.

1.x's large buttons and, more critically, the ability to easily copy the
local path of a download (bug 474640) so I can paste it to another
application or to a command line. I still can't figure out a way to do the
latter in 2.0, even from the Download Manager.

Until something is done about this, I'm going to continue using 1.1.18 as

You can copy the path of the download from the download progress dialog
*and* the download manager - just right-click the link being downloaded

Forgot to add: from the Download Manger - Edit|Copy Download Link.

When KaiRo gets back from his holiday, we will re-look at the
situation.

Basically Mozilla itself had abandoned the Gecko 1.8.1 platform some
time ago but we were still getting some security fixes from Linux
vendors who continued to upstream their fixes for a while. This
seems to

have dried up. We are trying to get a reply from the contact

Sorry for pointing to the obvious, but do you have any serious reason
to drop SM 1.1.18? I cannot imagine why you consider yourself stuck
with version 2. Going back to SM 1.1.18 should not be difficult, even
if you did not save your profile before going to SM 2.0.

It will be a long while before SM 1.x is so outdated that it cannot be
used reliably on the vast majority of sites. Safety is not either a
serious issue with the normal array of protections serious surfers
use. So the time you will spend restoring SM 1xx will not be wasted time.

I go back to Netscape 3.2 and do not remember a disastrous version ...
but I cannot say I tried them all. I believe you might be referring to
6.x when AOL interfered with Netscape.

I never move to a newer version without making sure I can return to
the previous one and I am sure I am glad I did so for Vista!

I believe you are right about version 5. I went the exact same way you
did, and left 7.2 behind not so long ago to move to Mozilla suite, then
to SM.
I use only one profile, now that I am no longer married and my daughter
still is too young to grasp the concept. A matter of some more months, I

Re: old mail dissappeared

2009-11-17 Thread MCBastos
Interviewed by CNN on 16/11/2009 13:56, Brian Fairey told the world:

I found them but now the files have no extension ie saved.file???
or a msf extension ie saved.msf
How do I open them or transfer them to SM 2.0

Netscape/Mozilla/Seamonkey/Thunderbird mail store files have no
extension, this is normal. MSF files are just index files to improve
performance; if they don't exist, Seamonkey will recreate them when you
open the message folder.

A quick-and-dirty way to move those old messages to the new profile
is... just moving them to the new mail store folder. If you don't want
to delete the corresponding folder in the new profile, just rename the
old file -- for instance, rename inbox to inbox2 and move it to the same
folder where the new inbox file is.

The next time you open Seamonkey, it will recognize that file as a mail
folder, recreate the MSF index and you will have all your messages back,
no special configuration necessary. That's one of the things I like best
about Netscape-descended mail programs...

The other main thing I like is that the mail stores are mbox-based --
which means, they are plaintext files. Once or twice over the last
fifteen years I had a mail file become corrupted -- I just loaded it
into a text editor and fixed it by excising the damaged message. Fixing
a corrupted mail store in Outlook or Outlook Express, OTOH, is a black
art usually involving special software...

Although I wouldn't mind seeing an option for using maildir storage
instead of mbox. There's a couple bugs open for it as a request for
enhancement, they already have my votes...

I have seen two explanations regarding the skipping of version 5: one
coming from marketing and the other from the development process.

The marketing explanation was that they just jumped one version in order
to seem more advanced.

The development process is a bit more involved. Apparently, the idea at
first was to develop two new versions of Netscape in parallel: V5 would
be based on the old Netscape code, while V6 would be based on the new
Mozilla Project code. V5 was eventually dropped entirely.

Which is true? Probably a bit of both; people would talk about Netscape
5 and Netscape 6 internally, and when NS5 was cancelled, Marketing
saw no reason to lower the version number of the new Netscape.

If while composing a message you realize that one or more recipients
may not be able to receive HTML-formatted mail, you can easily convert
the message to a different format when you click Send:

1. In the Compose window, open the Options menu and choose Format.
2. Select the format you want to use for sending the message from the
submenu:

===snipped

That procedure no longer applies to 2.0 as there is no Format in the
Options menu in 2.0.

Wrong. The part you quoted from Help refers to the case where you are
composing an HTML mail. In that case there *is* a Format option under
Options and it allows you to change the format of the outgoing mail. It
has been like that in SM 1.0, SM 1.1 and it is still like that in SM
2.0.

Yes, that misfeature is still with us. People who start in HTML are
allowed to
change, people who get started in text get to start all over, the
option to
correct the format is not offered in text mode, and sending in text
mode to
someone marked as wants HTML doesn't get a useful box to pop up and
let you

decide.

To compose in HTML for a single message, click on
the down arrow to the right of the Compose icon. There you will be
given

the option of composing the current message in plain text or HTML

Correct, this option is new. However, it does not replace the other
option, it is just a new alternative.

Greetings,

Jens

The way its setup now in SM2 if you have set to Plain Text in a
newsgroup you can only post in Plain Text.

If you set for HTML you can post either in HTML or Plaintext you'd
switch just by holding Shift key down (Mac) to swap to other format.

In Email you swap one to the other regardless of which format you in.

I suspect because most people here hate worth a passion HTML it was
built in not to be able to toggle to HTM if set to Plain text.

Since I don't see a setting for that at the newsgroup level, I assume that I
still need to have two profiles, and have two entries for the server, one for
groups which allow, even encourage it, and a totally separate one for the text
groups. Does that sound like a convenient user interface or what?

Or you can set the whole server to HTML posting, forget half the time, and piss
off most of your readers.

Well, at least it is a deliberately chosen limitation not a bug.

I've got AVG 8.5 Eree Edition, which I just now updated to 8.5.425.
Some time ago, when I had AVG 8.0, an incremental update put me at 8.5.
While the AVG Web site does promote AVG 9.0, it does not indicate any
termination of support for AVG 8.5. Indeed, updates to the paid edition
of AVG 8.5 are still available. When support of 8.5 does end, I would
expect an update to put me at 9.0.

Your comment about E-mail is strange. I'm using Eudora Lite 3.0.6,
which is about 12 years old. AVG 8.5 scans incoming E-mail just fine
and even adds headers to the messages to indicate that they have been
scanned.

coming from marketing and the other from the development process.

Okay, my understanding was that Netscape released the Communicator code
to Open Source, hoping to develop a new version with help from the
community. However, the old code had become so convoluted that only
Netscape engineers could make much sense of it, leading to the founding
of the Mozilla project and Gecko, on which Netscape 6 and later version
was sourced.

If while composing a message you realize that one or more recipients
may not be able to receive HTML-formatted mail, you can easily convert
the message to a different format when you click Send:

1. In the Compose window, open the Options menu and choose Format.
2. Select the format you want to use for sending the message from the
submenu:

===snipped

People who start in HTML are
allowed to
change, people who get started in text get to start all over, the
option to
correct the format is not offered in text mode, and sending in text
mode to
someone marked as wants HTML doesn't get a useful box to pop up and
let you

TAFs, satellite loops, and weathercams. Then I open another window with
the NY Times and the local paper - pretty soon, it's has 5-10 tabs of
headlines, editorials, columns, and letters to the editor. Then I open
another window to do some product searches, receive some links from
emails, get a dictionary definition, and check out a location on a
Google map.

I would drown in windows without Tabs!

I'm looking forward to tabs in email, but I'm going wait till December
for the tide of problems to subside before switching to SM 2. I probably
wouldn't have any problems - haven't in the past, but SM 1.1.18 is
pretty darn good, so I can wait.

Maybe, if you learned how to use tabs, you'd find you could do more
things at once AND with fewer mistakes. That's what I found. Tabs aren't
fluff - I ditched IE 6 for tabs in SM and never looked back.

Re: File icon in mail viewing windows

2009-11-17 Thread Glenn (formerly speak...@off--the--record.org)
On approximately 11/17/2009 2:44 PM, came the following characters from
the keyboard of Jens Hatlak:

Glenn wrote:

But when I double-click a message to open it in a new window, everything
looks fine on the surface, but underneath the File icon (which I had to
customize to get it back), only Recent appears.

In the mail list window, the similarly customized File icon has
Recent, but also lists all the accounts, with flyout menus for their
folders.

Is this a known bug?

Yes, bug 526339 is about to be checked in, i.e. it will be fixed in one
of the next nightlies and in time for SM 2.0.1 which is expected some
time next month.

HTH

Jens

Thanks for the bug number Jens, as well as the information. My keywords
for searching must have been too generic (or the wrong ones) to find the
bug in a reasonable amount of time.

Re: AVG 9.0 SeaMonkey

2009-11-17 Thread Arne

Hello, Everybody!

I downloaded an AVG right after I received the serious notice of the
deadline for AVG 8.5 is Dec. 1. I installed AVG 9.0 in replacement of
AVG 8.5, which worked much better than the 9.0. I've noticed that AVG
9.0 only works on e-mail scanning is Microsoft Outlook 2003, but not
SeaMonkey. I got completely puzzled. I do not see No Vvirus found in
this message. but in Outlook 2003, yes. I wonder did you have any
problems like me?

I wonder if it was the glitch in SeaMonkey 2.0 that didn't recognize AVG
9.0's new update? Or what? Just curious.

A bit off-topic here. But I desperately need your help. I've keep
getting my window becoming inactive not only in SeaMonkey, but any
applications, like SeaMonkey and MS Word 2003 for example. That really
frusstrates me especially when I am typing a response or report. I have
to click an inactive window to make it active again.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Let me know. Thanks.

Johnny :)

When installing AVG 9.0, did you choose the Personal E-mail Scanner
when AVG requested you to choose the plugin? There is only 2 options,
one for Outlook and one for all other email app's.

Check in Components E-mail scanner if the Installed e-mail
protections is indeed Personal E-mail Scanner and not anything else.
If it's not, then reinstall with the option to only make changes to
the current install.

AVG Free has always worked great on my PC's, now AVG 9.0 on Vista, and
in my opinion it's the best AV software. ;)
